He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not

Title: He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not

Author: Jigoku no Miko

Author’s Quote: Never let go the reigns of the wild colt of the heart

After a while she heard an explosion from out front before everyone began yelling Miaka’s name.

“Probably fainted again, huh, they actually worry about her. I wonder what that’s like. To have someone worrying about you.” She pondered to herself before Tasuki came out a little later and leaned on the railing next to her.

“You feeling better?” He questioned keeping his eyes to the porch.

“As apposed to what? Feeling unwanted and neglected like you don’t know why you’re here and every move I make to try and get him notice me seems to backfire and I end up hurting myself and breaking my heart further than he has? As apposed to that yeah I guess I’m feeling better, I’ve accepted he doesn’t need me.” She sighed keeping her eyes to the stars as Tasuki glared at her with unbelieving eyes.

“What do you mean he doesn’t need you? Of course Chichiri needs you! He loves you!”

“Does he?” She mocked rolling her eyes and withholding tears.

“Of course! you can tell…”

“Well he sure as hell can’t.” She snapped cutting him off. “Have you ever heard him say that he loves me?” Tasuki looked at her and shook his head solemnly. “Neither have I, I guess he cares but it’s hard to tell anymore. Back there, Tasuk you heard him he yelled that he loved Hiko but he can’t even write it when it comes to me.” She slid off of the railing and began to walk down the verranda but Tasuki quickly caught up with her and sat a hand on her shoulder to stop her.

“Kana you can’t honestly believe that he doesn’t care.” He whispered amazed that he was being so gentle.

“I don’t have to believe it’s true, please don’t tell him, Tasuki please.” This was the first time she had used his full name so he knew she was serious and upset continuing walking he watched after her before shaking his head.

“No dammit!” He yelled before running and spinning her around by the shoulder to face him.

“How can you do this to yourself? I always saw you two the same as I see Taka and Miaka, so in love, so involved with one another and now you’re just throwing it all away? Why? Why?!” He yelled giving her shoulders a shake.

“You know why, he doesn’t love me so just leave me alone Tasuki.” She turned and ran off into the woods before Tasuki stormed back inside and glared at Chichiri who was sitting in a chair in the living room while Taka, Tamahome, and Miaka sat in the bedroom next to it.

“What the hell is wrong with you?!?!” He yelled straight at Chichiri as Chichiri looked at him confused.

“What’s wrong Tasuki no da?” He questioned before Tasuki began pacing. Mitsukake stood and ushered the others out of the room but Nuriko and Hotohori eavesdropped.

“What’s wrong? What’s wrong? You’re asking the wrong person bucko! Why the hell…” he remembered what Kana had said on the verranda. “I don’t have to believe it’s true, please don’t tell him, Tasuki please.” Tasuki sighed and hung his head while he leaned against the doorframe and hung his head. “I can’t even tell you.”

“Tell me what?” Chichiri whispered setting a hand on Tasuki’s shoulder. Tasuki looked up at him before shaking his head.

“If you don’t know than you are so not the man I thought you were Chichiri.” Tasuki walked out before the others all heard the back door shut and followed Taka into the woods.

*****

Taka stood in a clearing looking at the stars before he heard a rustle from the bushes behind him and Tasuki emerged.

“Tama, where the hell do you think your going at a critical time like this?” Tasuki questioned eyeing the man. Taka just smiled.

“Where do you think? I’m going home.”

“even though we haven’t confronted Tanko and destroyed him yet.” Chiriko questioned from opposite of Tasuki. Behind Tasuki stood Hotohori, and Mitsukake and next to Chiriko stoon Chichiri.

“Well you’ve got the real celestial warrior now.” Taka whispered.

“Huh, so that’s it…” Nuriko started floating down from above by Chiriko and Chichiri but closer to Taka. “You can’t compete with the original so you’re giving up on Miaka and going home is that it? I never thought you were that kind of guy Taka.” Nuriko crossed his arms over his chest and gave Taka a dishonering glare.

“Nuriko?” Taka whispered getting the mans attention.

“Yeah, what?” He huffed.

“I appreciate it, but this is hurting Miaka, if I stay she’ll be torn between the two of us. You saw it Tasuki I don’t cast a reflection in the mirror, I’m a phantom, his shadow. It’s for the best, Miaka and Tamahome are together again, and now Suzaku’s holy power can be reawakened.” Taka summed before Chiriko shook his head.

“So that’s it? That’s why your leaving now? What if your wrong? I was so sure and I still am that you’re the real Tamahome.” Chiriko yelled.

“Thanks Chiriko but I can’t be the real Tamahome I don’t have his character mark or his kind of power, so I can’t protect Miaka.” A red glow surrounded Taka as the last word rolled off of his tongue. “Look, even Suzaku’s telling me it’s time to go.” Taka whispered lifting a hand and observing the red glow that it emitted.

“It was you, who allowed me to embrace my son Boushin, surely you remember that.” Hotohori stated with perfect posture and a stiff face.

“And wasn’t it you who endured excrusciating pain and resisted even with my strength holding you down?” Nuriko added trying to pursue Taka to stay.

“It was you, the one who risked his life to save me and Hiko.” Chichiri added also trying to pursuade his friend. Kana, who had been sitting on a tree branch above Chiriko slid down and landed on the ground with the ease of a cat behind him.

“We know you, we don’t need a mirror to see who you really are so don’t do this!!” Chiriko yelled.

“Chiriko, forgive me you think you know me but I still don’t remember how you died in battle I don’t know you.” Taka whispered. Chiriko choked with tears in his eyes, thirteen when he died, still thirteen two years later and as emotional as ever. Kana sat acomforting hand on the small boys shoulder as Chichiri looked at her with a smile, she ahd always been so gentle with the boy, when they met she automatically took him under her wing and became a motherly figure to him and Chiriko depended on her.

“Tamahome.” Mitsukake whispered with that stone face he was so famous for.

“Taka.” Kana whispered before he looked at her surprised, she kept her eyes on the young boy who was now hugging her hip and weeping softly as she ran a hand up and down his spine. “No matter how many times you were knocked down, for so long you always came back and I know you’ll come back, when two people love eachother, no matter what, no matter what happens they can never say goodbye maybe periodically but never forever. That’s why I know in my heart, because it’s right for you two to be together, whether she be there or you be here you’ll be together again, no one can ever say goodbye to love. To their hearts.” She whispered before looking up to him with teary eyes, Taka, along with the others looked at her shocked, she had never spoken like that before, with such understanding passion, never.

“Till the very end you kept believing in me don’t tell me you forgot that already! You swore to me your love for Miaka would never change! Do you really just want to disappear? Don’t go! Don’t go! Tama!” Tasuki ran to grab the man as he disappeared but only landed on the ground on all fours.

“Thank you, take care, goodbye.” Taka’s voice echoed through the air and then his life force was completely gone, as was he.

“Taka! NO!!” Tasuki yelled into the midnight sky as the others looked at him with saddened and angered expressions towards the loss of their friend. Chichiri stepped forward to go and comfort Tasuki but Kana stuck her hand out and stopped him, looking to Kana confused he saw the look in her eyes as she shook her head before nodding and taking a step back.

“Come on let’s go check on Miaka.” Nuriko whispered before everyone left except Kana, Chichiri, Chiriko and Tasuki. Kana looked down at the boy before kneeling down to his heighth.

“Come on kiddo, you look tired lets go.” She turned around and he hopped her back piggyback style. Taking another look at Tasuki she walked behind Chichiri back towards the house.

“Kana?” Chiriko whispered before yawning.

“Hmm?” She kept her eyes to the ground careful not to trip, the boy wasn’t exactly light but she was used to carrying extra weight on her shoulders.

“What you said back there, where did you hear it from?” He questioned and she let out a small giggle.

“My heart Chiriko, my heart.” She whispered before continuing the rest of the way to the house and helping Chiriko into a small bed set up in the livingroom for him in the corner.

“Goodnight Kana.” He smiled before rolling over and falling asleep, Kana brushed some of his bangs back before standing and walking out onto the verranda and assuming her position star gazing.

“Your so gentel with him.” Chichiri’s voice came from the doorway but she couldn’t look at him, she was still crying, but calming quickly. “As if he were your own.” He leaned agaisnt the railing propping himself up with his elbows.

“He’s like a little brother to me, he’s always counted on me and I like having atleast one person respect me for being there and supprotive not in the way.” She summed with a kind smile.

“Why didn’t you want me to go see Tasuki?” He questioned.

“Simple, I know what it’s like to be in his situation, well not completely, losing one of your best friends. You know what I’m talking about, you just want to be left alone, even the ones you care about… you want to keep at a distance.” She whispered the last part as Chichiri stared at the ground.

“Is that what went wrong?” Kana looked at him confused forgetting her tears but he didn’t look up. “Is that why your distancing yourself from me?” He let out a heavy sigh and removed his mask before looking up at her, shock passed over his face when he saw her tears.

“I… I…” She shut her eyes before sliding off the railing and shaking her head. “No, that’s not it at all.” She sighed and stared intently at the floor.

“Than what did I do?” He reached a hand under her chin and brought her gaze to his. “Kana?” She looked at him before shaking her head.

“It’s not what you’ve done, it’s what you have never done.” She walked into the house and opened the door to the room they were sharing before Chichiri followed her.

“What have I never done?” He questioned sitting on one of the beds.

“If you don’t know I can’t help you.” She shook her head.

“Dammit Kana there you go again.” He yelled catching her off guard, she looked at him with big eyes as he stood and walked over to her. “Everytime there’s something wrong you lock me out. Kana you have to stop doing this if you want me to care about you.” He lowered his voice to a whisper. Outside the door frame Mitsukake, Nuriko, and Tasuki were all listening.

“If you cared we wouldn’t have problems like this.” She spat not being able to control the bitter tone to her voice.

“What is that supposed to mean?” He raised his voice again this time getting enraged.

“You should know exactly what it means!”

“Do you think I have ESP or something?”

“No, if you did you’d know what I was really thinking right now.” She glared at him through teary eyes as more threatened to spill.

“And what are you thinking right now? Or do you not want to tell me that either.” There was a mocking tone to his voice and she couldn’t help but counter it, at this moment Hotohori spotted the others and walked over to see what was going on.

“What are you doin…mph.” Nuriko cupped a hand over his mouth and held him still.

“SHHH! Chichiri, and Kana are having a horrible fight, I think she has a secret from him or something.” Nuriko hissed before Hotohori joined the eavesdropping. Meanwhile back in the room…

“I think you are nothing but a bitter man who can’t get over a love that died long ago and move on! You hold onto a past that’s not there anymore the past is the past but you can’t accept that and you want to die just so you can relive it! You don’t care about the people here who care about you and need you here. You only care about yourself.” Her voice got softer as tears shook her body.

“As apposed to a girl who ran away from it all and now has no past? Don’t talk to me about moving on. The person who did love you you ran away from afraid that you might get hurt so here all you did is build up walls to try and hold people out and keep an icy coat on your heart!!” He yelled keeping his voice embedded with anger, Kana looked at him with unbelieving eyes.

“So what if I push people away? I’m afraid of getting hurt there’s nothing wrong with that!!” She held her fists up next to her cheeks as she wept, tears ecaped Chichiri’s eyes as well.

“Yes there is Kana, there’s so much wrong with that it hurts me.” He whispered before placing her hands back at her sides and riasing her gaze to his before kissing her passionately, pulling away he looked at her with a solemn gaze. “If you pushed me away anymore I wouldn’t beable to do that.” He smiled and she just looked at him before scrunching her eyebrows.

“So all I’m good for is kisses and cuddles? So it’ll make you feel better if I melt than you can sleep with me and I’ll be completely useful right?”

“Kana that’s not what I meant…” He stuttered before she cut him off.

“I know what you mean and what you don’t mean, what you say and what you would never say, and one of those things is what hurts me the most.” She shook her head before trying to walk past him but he pulled her back and kissed her again, with more passion. Pulling away she shook her head before running out the door stumbling on the floor she landed on her knees before standing and running into the woods.

“Kana!” Tasuki yelled after her but she kept running into the darkness and disappeared behind some trees. Looking back in the room the others watched Chichiri, he sat on his knees for a momet before a whimper escaped his lips and he began to cry, small tears at first but they developed into hard, gut wrenching sobs. Turning Tasuki stormed towards the door.

“Tasuki where are you going?” Nuriko yelled after him.

“I don’t care if those two can’t be around eachother or if they don’t want to talk were entering a battle and the last thing we need is our team split up over a stupid love-puppy fight!” He yelled back before slaming the door shut behind him and yelling for Kana as he stormed through the woods.

*****

Kana sat on a large boulder by a small stream a mere 50 yards east of the house, hearing Tasuki yelling in the background she knew he was gonna yell at her and she was ready to deal with it.

“Kana!” Tasuki yelled before emerging into a small clearing and seeing Kana sitting near the stream. “What are you doing?!” He yelled storming over to her and staring at her profile. She sat with her knees to her chest as tears ran lightly down her cheeks as she stared at the stream. “Are you nuts coming out here by yourself? Even if you and Chichiri had a fight. We are a team and we can’t afford to lose anyone.” He spat as she sat emotionless. “Say something, anything don’t just sit there and zone!” He huffed before she blinked and sighed.

“Why would you need me? I’m not a celestial warrior, I’m just some psycho witch with a bad attitude, everything he said back there was true all I do is shut people out so why are you so persistent with me? Why haven’t you given up already?” She questioned quietly.

“Because I know your hurting, it hurts when people push you away when all you want is them to open up. And I know you need someone you can depend on who will keep their mouth shut, I know everyone thinks I’m just a loud mouth who wouldn’t know love if it bit him in the ass but I know, I know this isn’t right the way things are aren’t right and I don’t know what to do but be patient for once and listen to people. I should have done this long ago and maybe, just maybe I’d be as lucky as Miaka and Taka, or you and Chichiri. People have their rough times but you and I know there are always goodtimes that follow.” He kept his gaze to the ground as he explained how he felt, Kana looked at him shocked but smiled and climbed down from where she had been sitting.

“You know what Tasuk?”

“What?” He looked up at the girl who was now standing in front of him.

“You’re actually right about something for once there is something good that will come after this.”

“And what is that?” He cocked an eyebrow in question.

“The end of Tenkou.” She whispered before he nodded.

“There’s no way he will win after everything he’s done. No way.” Tasuki shook his head before Kana smiled.

“You have to be the most stubborn and selfassured man alive you know that?” She cocked her head and he looked at her wide-eyed. “I guess that’s why your one of my best friends, thanks Tasuk.” She punched him in the arm playfully before the two headed back to the house.

“Tama where’s Miaka?” Tasuki questioned Tamahome who stood facing the bed with his back to everyone else. Everyone had entered the room where Miaka had been resting including Chichiri and Chiriko.

“She what?” Chichiri questioned.

“Apparently she decided to go back to him.” Tenkou appeared in shadows in the background.

“The jewels you scattered so he could be reborn, the trembling of your hearts as you searched for them, how enjoyable.” Tankou mocked from the shadows he hid behind. Kana stood in the back leaning against the wall and hoping she wouldn’t collapse as the pain surrounded her.

“You double crosser!!” Tasuki yelled pulling out his tessen.

“Tasuki don’t!” Chichiri yelled putting a hand out to stop him.

“You could never kill Tamahome even now that you know he is really Yosui, all the jewels of memory are inside of him. Chiriko and Mitsukake’s as well.” A mocking smile crossed his face. “I sense your need for revenge.” He cackled lightly.

“All of you… will die” Yosui growled.

“If his memories mean nothing try and beat him.” The two’s cackling voices echoed as the dissappeared.

“What do we do Tasuki?” Chichiri questioned.

“Is there really any question? My life already belongs to those two.” Tasuki smiled as the others nodded. Kana breathed a sigh of relief glad Tenkou was gone.

“Come we should all get some rest, tomorrow we will prepare for the battle.” Chichiri stated before turning and getting hirst first glimpse of the girl since she ran out. Tears threatened to spill from both eyes as they looked at eachother. “Kana.” He whispered to himself as they looked at eachother. Chiriko watched the two with saddened eyes before walking over to stand in front of her.

“Why are you two so hurt?” He questioned before she looked at him confused. “You two care and yet you can’t look at eachother without crying why is that Kana?” He questioned more thoroughly. She simply forced a smile and shook her head before putting a hand on his head.

“Sometimes Chiriko, sometimes people say things they do mean but to the wrong person.” He titlted his head.

“If that’s the case than why don’t you say something from your heart like you did in the forrest to Taka?” Kana and Chichiri looked at eachother, her smile faded and she looked only with longing eyes before turning back to the boy.

“When your older Chiriko it’s not always that easy.” Kana whispered setting her hand on his head. “Go and get some sleep I have a feeling tomorrow will be a long day.” Chiriko nodded before leaving the room, Kana followed close behind before leaving the house again and sitting on the porch where she would sit up most of the night crying.
