CHAPTER 23
Mogi sat in front of the computer at her University's library. It was evening, and her day off from work, and she had nothing planned. Many boys on campus gave her invitations to fun events. However, Mogi wasn't interested in their offers. Only one man existed for her, and he was much too far away.
She had changed her original study program to fit herself into Fujiwara Takumi's world. Natsuki felt that she could support her boyfriend best by making herself a place within his realm of expertise. Mogi was taking extra summer school credits to get her math skills high enough for the mechanical engineering degree she had chosen to pursue. Natsuki wanted to design cars that Takumi would love to drive.
The extra intensive mathematical classes were going well, as was her part time job. However, Natsuki was anything but content. Takumi had picked up an impromptu watch dog in the last month. The man's interference made the rift between them even more difficult to close. Mogi was at her wit's end. She had tried to get Takumi to listen to her so they could work out their problems. However, he seemed determined to punish her for her stupidity.
Despite how hard Natsuki tried to make everything right between them, she came up against barriers. Mogi wished Takumi would get over his hurt and anger over the stupid things she had done. Natsuki wanted him to come back to her with every fiber of her being. They had been so good together when they were dating. Mogi knew that she would make their love far better for Takumi when he finally agreed to take her back.
It hurt that Takumi was seeing someone new. Mogi could not believe that Takumi loved his new girlfriend whom he had refused to name. If she allowed herself to believe this new girl was everything her class mates had told her, Mogi felt she had nothing left for which to live. If Takumi fell in love with his new girlfriend, she lost any hope of reclaiming her shy, and adorable man.
Mogi stared at the web page in front of her. She had pulled up Project D's latest information to see Takumi's racing schedule and progress report. The young woman often came to this site to check on Takumi's career as a street racer. She had lost count of the many times she stared at the image of Takumi and his Trueno. The image was placed on the site a few weeks earlier. The script at the top of the page mentioned a warning of imposters forcing the decision to place images on the site. This image showed Takumi leaning against his Trueno's new black colored hood in a blue and white striped hooded shirt. It was her last visual link to the man she adored.
Mogi could no longer speak to Takumi on the telephone. It had been several days since she had heard his deeper, softly hesitant voice. Another voice, repeating harsh words that Mogi could not block from her mind had drowned Takumi's softer, mellow tones. Takumi's teammate, Takahashi Keisuke, was brutal. When he took the telephone from Takumi's otosān and attacked her verbally, he had stunned Mogi.
' "More like he's on his way to the pro leagues, and it's a known fact that pros make lots of money that your fingers are itching to spend for him." The masculine voice on the other end of the phone line growled with blatant hatred.
"You're wrong bout everything. I've changed! You don't know me so keep your insane observations to yourself!" Mogi was angry and defended herself with all the fury she could muster.
The cutting voice rumbled over the phone line again. "That IS a VALID observation! Your history with Fujiwara makes your motives real clear to the rest of us." '
Mogi wanted more details about the car accident after fighting with Takahashi san. She had not known about the blown car engine in the Trueno. Takumi had said that he scraped against a mountain cliff which was bad enough, but the blown engine was news to Mogi. It was crazy that the man blamed her. Mogi had no idea how she could have caused either thing to happen.
After learning that Takumi liked to street race, Mogi had begun to buy books on cars to understand their workings. She wanted to talk with Takumi about things he enjoyed, and cars were at the top of his list. From all she had learned, engines blew when they wore out. A specific pin inside the block broke free of a rod. The broken piece ripped through the engine compartment and tore a hole through the block. It did not make any sense to lay the blame for a worn out engine that broke on her.
"Your shit has caused him to blow an engine, plus get into a wreck! Those aren't good changes if you ask me!"
Mogi had always asked Takumi to be careful whenever he raced because she cared. She had told him to lose races if that was the only way to protect his life. Still, the beastly, arrogant man had made the claim that all the problems that Takumi had with his car were her fault. Takahashi san said her version of change was anything but good. He had also accused her of trying to impede Takumi kun's progress as a racer because she had wanted him to be aware of his safety so he remained alive.
"I don't care if Takumi kun is seeing someone else now. Natsuki loves Takumi kun more than anyone, and I'll prove it! He'll take me back once he sees how much I've changed for him! I know he doesn't love his new girlfriend!"
Mogi felt a twinge of desperation skitter along her spine as the deep voice reminded her that Takumi felt the need to get even for her salary man in the Benz. She had plenty of reason to regret her past. If this new girl, who Takahashi claimed existed, managed to sway Takumi's heart away from her for good, how would she ever recover from the loss? Mogi forced the thought away and shored up her defenses for the next insults.
"You're not some great find even if you'd like to think you are, you stupid delusional bitch!"
Mogi's eyes widened. What had Takumi kun said to his teammate? He must have told his teammate about her affair with Papa. It hurt to think Takumi might have told someone else, but Mogi knew it had hurt Takumi a great deal more when he learned of her mistake.
"How dare you?! Don't you tell me that I'm not good enough for Takumi kun! I don't subsidy-date any more!"
What kind of power did Takahashi Keisuke have over her precious Takumi? Mogi glared at the image on the screen above Takumi's picture. The spiky-haired blond's image showed a confident man with a self-satisfied smirk. His yellow car's picture was next to his image on the top of the information page. The car had a name tag that called it a FD. Had Keisuke Takahashi not proven himself a cruel bastard, Natsuki knew his good looks would still sway her. She had thought him gorgeous on previous visits to this website. Takahashi was much too attractive by half, including his angry voice that shredded her so mercilessly. His voice matched his face Mogi decided as their battle rose to the front again.
'Mogi tried to make the man understand that she knew she had made mistakes. "I didn't say Takumi kun was getting even with me on purpose! I hurt Takumi kun so he's seeing someone else to try and get over the foolish things I did. But, I know he'll come back to me because I love him more than his new girlfriend ever will!"
"Bull shit! First you claim you love Fujiwara, then you disrespect him by saying he'd do something so dishonorable as punish you by dating someone else. You have the worst opinion of Fujiwara imaginable. There's not a chance in hell anyone can believe you love Fujiwara after hearing the things popping out of your mouth. You don't really know how to put others first, do you? If you did, you'd support what Fujiwara kun is doing. You certainly wouldn't be screaming at him to take you back when he needs to focus on his driving." The tone the man employed frightened her. She could not understand this strange man's determination to be hateful to her as she shivered with the receiver to her ear.'
The realization that she found his picture cute even now served to anger Mogi more. She wished Takahashi san was ugly so holding onto her hatred wouldn't be so hard. This was her worst enemy's face. Before he had so ruthlessly insulted her on the phone, she had thought him gorgeous. Now she wanted to rake his eyes out. Why did Keisuke Takahashi hate her so much was one question Natsuki wanted answered.
Her eyes traveled lower and settled on Takumi's picture again. His calm expression was a balm to her soul. Natsuki studied his face as he leaned against his cute compact. Mogi could see some lettering for his family's tofu shop, though the letters were too blurry to read. The image tag listed his car as an AE hachi roku. Mogi wondered about the name change. Takumi drove a Toyota Trueno. She was looking at it with her own eyes. Perhaps some professors could shed light on the name change.
'That deep voice continued to attack her without relent. "Then give him space to breathe, instead of ruining his chance to get somewhere by pissing him off every day. If you actually supported Fujiwara, you'd listen to everything he says also and accept him at his word!"
"I do listen, but I need to make things right with Takumi kun! He's the one who's not listening to anything I've said!" Mogi was very aware of everything Takumi said to her. She felt it was Takumi who refused to listen whenever she called seeking to repair the rift that grew every day. Mogi was frustrated with hearing the problem was hers alone. How often did she have to beg Takumi kun to hear her out before things improved?'
Mogi felt like her heart would shatter if she did not see Takumi soon. How could she back down, and leave her man alone with so much going wrong? She had to change Takumi's mind so he would return to her. Mogi was not going to sit back and let another woman take Takumi from her. Natsuki was proving that she could change. She deserved a second chance. Otherwise she could not give up on the quiet young man she adored to distraction.
"Wrong again! You wouldn't be doing this shit if you listened to Fujiwara. You're too busy feeding your ego by trying to get Fujiwara back because he dumped you, Mogi!"
Mogi's desperation to be understood gained strength. This man was wrong to say she wanted to fuel an ego trip. He was the arrogant one. "Takumi kun will come back after I make things right with him! I know he loves me because he said part of his problem is because I didn't love him the way he wants me too."
She thought she heard Takumi speaking in the background. However, she could not make out his words. "You're wrong again, Mogi! I know for a fact that Fujiwara loves the person he's with now!"
"I don't believe you. Takumi kun would have told me if he loved his new girlfriend!" Her history with Takumi made her certain that he was not saying that he was in love, because he wasn't. Takumi had always talked to her about many things that bothered him. Natsuki knew about his otosān's drinking binges, and violence. She knew about many of Takumi's painful memories. She wanted to be the one to heal those wounds, but could only do so if he gave her a second chance.
"Fujiwara doesn't have to tell you shit about his personal life! You obviously don't listen, so he'd be wasting his breath if he tried. He's mentioned that you twist his words to fit your grand delusion, Mogi." The deep voice had a point. Takumi did not have to tell her anything, but Mogi felt that he would talk to her, even if her stupid actions hurt him.
"I'm not delusional! Takumi kun said he felt something was missing when we dated because I didn't love him the way he wanted me to. I know everything he said to me yesterday! How can you be so sure you know so much about Takumi's new girlfriend anyway?" Mogi challenged the deep masculine voice over the phone.
It was unlikely that Takumi had said she was twisting his words to fit what she wanted to hear. Natsuki knew he would never say something so vicious about anyone. She held all the cards. Takahashi had already admitted that he had to drag information out of Takumi kun. Mogi never fought to learn what she wanted to know. She had the upper hand.
"I know the person Fujiwara's going out with now. His sweetheart's willing to do whatever it takes to make their relationship work. They aren't getting in Fujiwara's way by telling him to lose battles. They believe in Fujiwara's Kami-sama given talent as a racer, and comprehend that there's not any excuse for him to crash unless there's a catastrophic mechanical failure that prevents him from controlling his hachi roku!"
His answer was unwelcome news. Mogi stamped her foot in frustration. How would Takahashi know Takumi's new girlfriend? Was the girl a school friend, or a relative of Takahashi's that he had introduced to Takumi?'
Mogi turned her thoughts back to where she was, and scrolled down to the main links under Takumi's picture. They listed all of the races in which the two men had been. A click on any of the links would take her to the main page for each course, and the final times of their completed races. She clicked on their last race and waited for the information to load.
An image of three men standing next to each other as they bent over a laptop loaded first. The third man, also very good looking with raven black hair was closest to the computer. The tag beneath said 'Strategy Meeting.' Obviously, the ill-tempered blond was looking at her Takumi, who was frowning as he looked at something to which the black-haired man pointed. Mogi thought perhaps Takumi was talking in the image, but something about the blond's expression in the picture made her grind her teeth.
The young woman began questioning whether the blond street racer felt like he owned Takumi. She felt shocked by the way the blond looked at her man in the digital image. Mogi also wondered for a second if she was losing her mind as jealousy blasted through her. Her hands balled into fists as a sudden image of Takumi being stolen from her by the blond's good looks formed in her mind. An unwelcome image where Takumi kun looked at Keisuke Takahashi as he had once looked at her made Natsuki want to scream.
Mogi closed her eyes and took a deep breath while shaking her head to rid herself of the sudden unwelcome mental picture. That all too masculine voice on the phone had held so much hatred in it. Takahashi Keisuke had declared war on her. If Takumi's new girlfriend was a relative of Takahashi's, which would explain his hatred. Mogi opened her eyes again once she satisfied herself that she knew the reason for his hatred.
'I wonder whether Takahashi has a girlfriend of his own. Maybe he's attracted to men, and wants my Takumi? Does he think I'm in his way?'
Mogi chastised herself. 'I need to stop being silly. I shouldn't let my dorm mate's yaoi books become fuel for my vivid imagination. I guess I shouldn't have read part of Maori chan's collection a few days ago, even if she insisted. Beautiful and seductive as the artwork was, seeing something like that in my head between my Takumi and that Takahashi beast is a disservice to my man.'
Mogi huffed as she cleared away the image of Takumi being seduced by the blond. She knew very well that Takumi had wanted her, even if he had been too shy to act on her offers to make love. He was a true gentleman who had kept himself in check with her because he loved her enough to show her respect.
Mogi forced her eyes away from the image and looked at the course times. Takumi had set another record. He had shaved three seconds off the previous posted record she saw with a wave of pride. Takumi truly was in the world he belonged. Mogi understood that as she reread the synopsis of Takumi's race, and the strengths and weaknesses his competitor had displayed. She closed out the screen and returned to the main page.
Mogi scrolled to the bottom of the main Project D page. She read the notes for their next two scheduled visits. Natsuki was well aware of the fan sites that existed to pass on information about Project D's racing schedule. She had learned many things from the fan sites. Fan pressure had finally pushed Project D's captain to post upcoming race information on the official site. Imposters trying to ruin Takumi's reputation were behind several features now on the official racing team's home page. The posted images were one such new feature added to the site. Another feature was a section that explained when Takumi's car or Takahashi's were getting repairs so similar cars on the mountain passes would not dupe fans.
One of the two tentative battle links said that Takumi's team was headed for a pass that was not far from Tokyo in two weeks. Ecstatic over the news, Mogi clicked on that link which showed specifics on the area they would visit. She half sized the course screen so she could continue to glance at Takumi's image as she settled in to read about the two courses Takumi would drive upon soon. It was more important to see where he would be when he was so close, than to read about the course scheduled for this weekend. She checked the main map pictures, and absorbed the information between glances at the face she dreamed of every night.
"Hey, Mogi-chan, nan da?" Mogi looked up from the computer screens of the race course, and Takumi's picture. She faced her dorm-mate, Maori, who stood close to her shoulder. Mogi had been curious about the girl who stood next to her from their first day of class. Mogi knew so little about the other girl, although they shared a room.
Mogi had heard cruel rumors about Maori. People said her boyfriend was involved with the Black Market. Others said that Maori was smuggling goods. Maori's expensive clothing was probably part of the reason she was subjected to envy-based rumors. Maori had done nothing to deserve ill treatment that Mogi had seen. She had also suffered because of unflattering rumors in high school. Mogi thought she knew the reason behind the cruel unflattering things floating around campus about her dorm mate from personal experience.
Maori was a beautiful woman with a vivacious personality and bright smile. She thrived on making every outing an adventure, even if it was simply buying their evening meal. Maori also had a flare for how she dressed. The svelte woman always looked like she was fresh from walking down a fashion show runway. Some mornings she looked like she had stepped off the cover of a magazine. Mogi felt dowdy next to the other woman. Yet, Natsuki would not hold her sense of inferiority against her beautiful roommate.
Mogi knew her roommate's boyfriend liked to spoil her with beautiful things. Maori mentioned having a part time job in sales, although Maori had not named the store where she worked. Mogi's most recent knowledge came from Maori's confidence that she liked to collect yaoi based graphic novels. She found the idea of men making love erotic.
Mogi flushed as she answered the beautiful girl who waited for a reply. "I was checking out a website, Maori san."
She was caught staring at Takumi's image like a lovesick fool. Maori flashed perfect teeth as she pulled a few strands of hair behind a delicate ear. She glanced again at the web page Mogi had forgotten to close and saw Takumi kun's image. "Wow. I didn't know you were a fan of street racing. That man's really cute too."
"Uhm, well, the man in this picture is with a team called Project D. We went to school together. His name's Fujiwara Takumi. I was wondering how he's doing. Thought I'd check this site to see how his training is going. He wants to become a professional race-car driver. This site covers their street races, and shows their courses."
"You look so sad, Mogi-chan. Let me guess, you're in love, and he doesn't realize you exist, right?" Maori sounded sympathetic.
"We used to date, Maori san. We broke up because I hurt him by doing something really dumb. I want to make things right, so Takumi will forgive me. His teammate won't even let me talk to Takumi kun. He's an arrogant jerk. The guy acts like he owns Takumi." Mogi clicked out of the course page to stare at the pictures of Keisuke Takahashi and Takumi Fujiwara as she full sized the main page.
"I have to say both men are total eye candy! Any onna with eyes in her head would have it bad for either one of them. I can see you have great taste in men, Mogi chan." Maori said while looking at the two images.
Mogi pointed to Takahashi's picture. "That's the arrogant prick that's turning Takumi kun against Natsuki. His name is Takahashi Keisuke. The yellow car is his. He's such a vicious brute. I spoke to him on the phone a few days ago. He wouldn't let Takumi kun speak to me although I heard Takumi ask for the telephone. He said horrible things to Natsuki. I heard him tell Takumi kun that he wasn't allowed to talk to me as if he had the right to give orders in Takumi's home."
Tears flooded her eyes as she talked to the girl who stood beside her patting her shoulder. "That's terrible, Mogi-chan. I would do everything in my power to put the jerk in his place in your shoes. Arrogant men can cause such hassles for us onnas."
Mogi looked up at Maori with a frown. "All I think about is how do I make someone like him go away? How can I get Takumi kun to myself long enough to fix things between us? Takahashi is always around Takumi kun. He even convinced Takumi's otosān to refuse to let me talk to Takumi. I've been thinking about going home so I can sit on Takumi's doorstep until he listens to me."
Maori shrugged as she spoke with a careless tone. "The pass you were reading about is roughly thirty minutes from our campus dorm. You should get a ride to the mountain, and surprise your Takumi kun. It's not as hard as you think to deal with arrogant men, Mogi chan. It can be a pain, but it's easy to scare control freaks once you have the right props."
"Props, Maori san?" Maori studied her as she pondered her answer. Something calculated existed in the perusal the other woman gave her. Mogi waited for her to answer as she again pulled the last course times page up to show Maori. That digital photograph of the strategy meeting gave her jealousy another boost. Mogi glanced back at the woman who lifted an eyebrow as she looked at the image.
"Maori san, doesn't this picture make you wonder whether that blond Takahashi racer has some kind of ownership mentality over my Takumi?"
Maori gave the image a close examination. "Hm, the blond listened to what your cute guy said to that gorgeous black-haired man in the picture. He's got an assertive, rugged kind of look which could make anyone think things that aren't there. If you have a dirty mind, it's easy to believe that he wants to screw your Takumi kun. Then again, I have a thing for yaoi manga, so I'm prejudiced to want to see cute guys doing the nasty together." Maori giggled with a hand over her lips, and a flush on her cheeks as she reminded Mogi of her fetish.
"I know I'm being a baka in thinking that way. Takumi's not interested in men. Since I got into a fight with Takahashi on the phone, well, . . . I can't stop thinking that he's trying to control, or take Takumi kun away from me. I feel like Takahashi san declared war on me personally." Mogi shook her head as another compromising image rose.
The blond held her beloved with his self-satisfied smirk in her imagination. The picture streamed into her head with even more force than the first time. Mogi again chastised herself for reading her roommate's graphic novels. She could not believe such a thing about her shy crush. Maori's observation that Takahashi's expression could give that impression was like gasoline poured on the jealous fire burning within her heart.
"Who can say about the gorgeous blond? Maybe he's gay and wants a piece of your darling's action. Then again, he may just be an arrogant jerk that likes to run everyone else's life. You could always talk about a truce with him. Maybe you could even offer to share. Then you could end this little war without difficulty if he's gay. If you're lucky, he might even swing. Then, you could have two very hot men all to yourself. You'd be the envy of every girl around campus. If you catch my meaning?"
Mogi found herself considering the possibility that Takahashi was gay, and had set his sights on her naive, innocent Takumi. Part of her shuddered in horror. Another part found a sensual undertone to entertain her imagination as she considered Maori's suggestion. Her irritation boosted as another image of the two men together in an explicit position collided with her emotions. No way could she share Takumi like that. After the way the blond had spoken to her, Natsuki doubted she could ever stomach Takahashi if he also liked girls.
Maori tapped a manicured nail against her chin. "Anyway, I'm sure I'm being silly about the two of them having a fling, so ignore my dirty mind. Taboos have always fascinated me. Two divine looking men together in that way, tends to set my imagination off."
"I know you like yaoi books, Maori san. If I hadn't read the ones you gave me, I wouldn't be wondering if Takahashi is gay, and after Takumi kun."
Maori giggled behind her hand again. "Gomen, but as gorgeous as they are, I'd want to see them getting nasty together in live action just once. Both are super sexy in unique ways. Oh well, I know I'm twisted. I'd try to snap them both up if I was in your place just to watch them together."
'That smug voice took on a superior tone.
"Takumi kun always tells me everything on his mind. He hasn't said he loves her to Natsuki!" Mogi felt her bile rise as she fought back. It was true that Takumi had not told her anything about how he felt toward his new girlfriend. If the woman was real, he did not love her. That was the only thing Mogi could entertain and stay sane.
"Of course he hasn't told you! You refuse to listen. Fujiwara knows it's a waste of time telling you a damn thing about the love of his life, Mogi! There's a huge difference between hearing someone, and paying attention to everything they're saying to you. Get a clue and learn the differences, baka no onna!" The cruel beastly man was accusing her of being the only problem yet again.'
"Forget it. Takahashi's a brute. My Takumi kun isn't like that at all. He only likes onnas. In fact, Takahashi told me that he knows Takumi kun's new girlfriend. I think she may be related to him." Her tone sounded sullen to her own ears. Mogi could not stop the replay of their verbal fight on the phone.
"Hm, do you honestly want to get time alone with your guy, so you can talk to him?"
"Of course. Natsuki loves Takumi kun so much. Natsuki is even changing everything that caused the problems we had so Takumi kun will take me back. Still, I can't even call his home anymore. It's all that blond jerk's fault! He poisoned Fujiwara san against me. I hate Takahashi Keisuke!"
"I think I know someone who can help you. If you have enough dedication to use the suggestions a friend of mine gives you, I could arrange for you to talk to him." Maori gave her another long look. Those searching looks bothered Mogi, but she had no idea why she felt uncomfortable. Mogi shook off the uneasy feeling as she considered Maori's offer. If she could see Takumi kun, without Takahashi's intimidation, she knew Takumi kun would listen. As thing stood, Natsuki was terrified of losing Takumi. If Maori's friend had a good idea to get rid of Takahashi long enough for her to talk to Takumi, she would get Takumi back. She had nothing to lose by giving Maori's friend's suggestions a try. If she refused Maori's offer, Mogi knew she would lose Takumi for sure.
"I would do anything to get Takumi kun back! I simply need to talk to him so I can fix things between us."
"Anything?" Maori gave her another odd look.
Mogi nodded her head as she gave the vehement reply. "Hai! Anything!"
Maori dropped a sympathetic hand onto her shoulder again. "I believe I know someone who can help you. If you're free, come with me for a bit, Mogi chan. You should talk to someone. He has all the props to get that pretty boy to leave you alone so you can talk with your man."
Mogi closed the website and shut down the computer. "If you can help me get the chance to talk to Takumi kun, I'm grateful for any help that you, or your friend can give me, Maori san."
Mogi shut the door on her unease as she followed her dorm-mate out of the library. Anything to get time with Takumi was what she was prepared to give. Mogi meant it as she dug deep within herself to firm her resolve to win the war.
