By nature, Mammon was a loner. She spent a lot of her time locked away in her room, going over finances in her head as the thought of how much it must cost to run this place slowly drove her insane. She went over the figures on how much money was spent on the food they ate, how much was paid on bills, and then of course, there was the weekly salary the staff earned. It drove her nuts to think of so much money being used so carelessly and, just like what she had done to wind up here, she refused to eat or drink anything.
Mammon didn’t have an eating disorder or anything of the like; she simply believed that if she didn’t consume what they were buying, they would stop ordering as much stock as they did, cutting her out of the equation.
Though the staff worried for her and tried to get her to eat as best they could, they were fooled when she would take the plate of food they were handing her in silence, believing her to be taking it back to her room. Instead, the indigo-haired woman took it straight to Belphegor, handfeeding the man as he devoured it quickly; though the blond was more well-fed than the other patients, he through tantrums and refused to eat as well, picky on whom he would take food from.
Walking through the hallways by herself, Mammon searched for someone she could scam money out of, knowing it was safer in her hands than anyone else’s; she would never spend such precious money, instead hoarding it away where no one would ever find it.
It was very early in the morning, and most of the other patients were still asleep; it seemed that the only others out of bed during sunrise was Lussuria and Leviathan, and while the former was almost always found with Ryohei during these hours, Leviathan wasn’t even worth the hassle; his fixations wouldn’t allow for her to get any money from him.
With the staff offices bunched so closely together, it was easy for the Varia patient to work out that the only staff member aside from Ryohei whom was inside the building was Hibari.
“I refuse.”
Mammon stopped in her journey at the skylark’s voice, finding the door to his office slightly ajar. She knew the other was on the phone as there was an unfamiliar voice on loudspeaker.
“It’s not your decision, Hibari.” The voice sounded annoyed, as if this conversation had been happening for a while now. “It’s the board’s decision, and we’ve all come to an agreement.”
“I do not agree with this.”
“That’s too bad. We’re already looking at transferring all of the patients to other facilities. We’re matching each individual patient to where they would be best suited, but those twins… Nowhere else seems to want to accept them.”
Mammon let a frown slip onto her face, her mind putting this together; was Hibari trying to stop them all from being shipped off to different facilities…? But why were they being transferred in the first place…?
“You don’t get it, do you, herbivore?” It was clear Hibari was agitated, and it surprised Mammon; she, along with the rest of her Varia comrades, truly believed that the young man didn’t care for his patients at all – but here he was, trying to keep them all together. “These patients are here because no other facility can handle their requirements. Their needs won’t be met and they will become more miserable than they already are. While the Millefiore Wing is distant from the other two, I have never seen a more tight-knit group than the Varia and Vongola. I will not let you go through with this.”
“There will be other patients for them to bond with, Hibari, and staff who can deal with their level of care.”
“That is what you said when you forced a transfer on Belphegor.” Mammon could remember this clear as day; the way ten years ago her friend had been taken to a different hospital because of the board’s decision. He had somewhat been getting better before the decision, a laidback personality shining through the cracks, but once Hibari had fought to have him returned to their care, he was more bitter and vicious than he had been to begin with after his time away from them. “He was gone for a year, and when I finally got him back into my hospital, he was covered in bruises and more angry than any of us had ever seen him; the staff couldn’t handle him and beat him daily, allowing the other patients to do the same to him.”
“There is nothing you can say, Hibari; you were never fully staffed to begin with, with inadequate numbers to care for your patients. Now you’re down three staff members and overworking the two you have left. Either transfer your patients yourself or leave it to us, but either way, the Namimori branch is being closed for good.”
Mammon’s eyes widened at these words, unable to believe what she was hearing. She was startled by something loud banging in the office before the unmistakable sound of the phone being slammed down filled the air.
The woman didn’t know what to think; all she knew was that it looked like she was about to be separated from the few people she cared enough about to call her friends.

When lunchtime rolled by and Hibari’s phone rang again, the skylark felt as if he could just throw the device against the wall; he was angry, upset that there didn’t seem to be anything he could do to save his patients – he knew what their fates would be if they were handed off to someone else; there was a reason there were so few patients here, and why they all suffered severely; they were here because no one else wanted them, rejects of the already-rejected, left behind to those lucky enough to be living normal lives.
Clenching the phone tightly, Hibari hesitated to raise it to his ear. “What.”
On the other end of the line, Tsuna froze before he spoke again, wariness in his voice. “You don’t sound very happy, Hibari-san…”
“That’s because I’m not, herbivore,” the skylark spat.
“Can I do anything to help…?”
“No!” Hibari didn’t mean to snap so viciously at the younger male, but he was truly in a foul mood; he wanted nothing more than to be able to save his patients. Taking a deep breath, the older male calmed himself before he said in a softer tone, “What are you calling me for, herbivore?”
“I have a request…”
“What kind of request?”
“Well…” Tsuna seemed to shift on the other line before he said, “I was wondering if you would let me… well, adopt one of the patients, so to speak…”
“Adopt?” Hibari smirked, finding this term rather amusing. “All but one patient are older than you, herbivore. You wish to adopt an adult?”
“…I was looking at the teenager, actually…”
“The green herbivore?” Leaning back in his chair, Hibari considered this; if there was nothing he could do to save his patients, he might possibly be able to spare Fran the very real possibility he would go somewhere he wouldn’t be cared for if he could slip him through the cracks and place him with Tsuna instead. “And what would you do with him, pray tell, herbivore?”
“It’s just…” Tsuna sighed before he explained himself. “Fran’s doing very well with me, and… I don’t think being locked up in a facility is what he needs – I think it’s the last thing he needs, in all honesty… He needs lots of patience and understanding, but he also needs to be somewhere he can be treated like a normal kid… I want to put him back into schooling and see how he goes; I’m sure Dino wouldn’t mind an extra student, and I think it would be good for Fran to be able to meet new people in controlled environments where he can learn to feel safe again.”
“I can understand your reasoning.” Not wanting to break the news to anyone just yet in hopes that he may still be able to turn this around, Hibari nodded. “Take care of him, herbivore.”
“I will, Hibari-san.” The brunet sounded truly overjoyed at these words. “Thank you very much; I’m sure he’ll be much happier with me.”
“He will be.” With that said, Hibari ended the call. He dropped his phone to his desk as he sighed, slumping forwards as he dropped his face into his hands. “…At least I can potentially save one of them…”
Remembering back to the vicious Belphegor they had been presented with after finally getting him returned to the facility, Hibari could only hope that if he were to part with his patients, none of them would be abused and mistreated by staff and patients alike the way Belphegor had been – what he had been put through by their hands was no better than the things his family had done to him, if not worse than them.
Spinning around to look for his bird, Hibari could only hope there was something that could be done; he really didn’t want to abandon the ones they had all fought so hard and so long for.

“What?”
Mammon repeated herself to her two friends, Xanxus and Squalo staring at her in disbelief. “I said I think the facility is shutting down, and we’re all going to be transferred to different hospitals.”
Squalo’s eyes widened as he realised just what he was being told. Reaching out, he grabbed his lover’s hand in both of his, squeezing it as the thought of being taken away from his most loved one almost put him into a panic attack. “No…”
The woman reached out, running her hand through long locks of hair. She shook her head, her violet eyes softening; while she had never known that the two men were together until recently, she had always known that they shared a bond stronger than most, especially considering their living conditions and states of mind.
“It might not happen, Squalo,” Mammon tried to soothe, hating to see the man looking so distraught; Squalo had suffered a lot himself, and it wasn’t fair for him to have to be taken away from the one who was keeping him whole. “I may have misconstrued things.”
“I fucking hope you did!” Squalo moved to press himself against Xanxus, his eyes filling with tears; he had never thought he would be separated from the older male like this before, and he didn’t realise how agonising it would be to live without him until the possibility had arisen. “I don’t… I can’t… N-not without… Xanxus…”
Xanxus growled as he wrapped an arm around his lover, holding Squalo tight. “No one’s going to fucking take you from me, shitty shark; I’ll kill them if they dare try it.”
Squalo nodded, turning to bury his face in against Xanxus’ shoulder. His body quivered from stress, just hoping this was some cruel nightmare he would soon wake up from.
“You should tell Leviathan, Xanxus.” Scratching the back of her hand lazily, Mammon shrugged. “You’re the only one he’ll listen to, and he’s going to be as distraught as Squalo if he realises he’s going to be separated from you.”
Xanxus nodded, absentmindedly running his hand down Squalo’s side. He sighed before he pressed his nose in against silky hair, inhaling the other’s familiar scent; the idea of having his shark taken from him made him angrier than he had been in a long time, but he knew if he reacted negatively, it would only make things worse – for now, he would wait until someone dared try to get in between them.
“I think Lussuria is still with Ryohei, so I’ll tell him later.” Mammon knew that out of all of the Varia patients, Lussuria would be the one hit hardest; he loved his wing-mates more than anyone else in his life, and they were all he had had for almost twenty years; it would break his heart to have the ones he viewed as his children removed so abruptly from his life. “And Bel, when I see him next.”
Squalo looked up at the blond’s name, a worried look on his face. “They can’t seriously take Belphegor away from this place… This is the only fucking facility that treats him like a fucking human being!”
“I know, Squalo…” It hurt Mammon to think of what Bel could potentially find himself in, but what could she do? Nothing. “I know… I’m scared for him, too; no one understands that he has feelings just like us.”
“Xanxus, remember when they transferred him and he came back worse than he had ever been?” Squalo chewed at his lip at the memory, remembering how angry he had felt at the way Belphegor had lashed out at everyone around him, obviously so used to being hurt every time he was approached, he had forgotten that the people here weren’t looking to harm him – quite the opposite. “What if… What if he goes back to that…? He’s not crying if we stay close to him for too long now; he remembers who we are and that we wouldn’t hurt him like those other fucktards…”
“Don’t forget Fran.” Mammon’s heart sincerely went out to the boy who was terrified of his own shadow, knowing that he would never cope in an entirely new environment with completely different people after everything he had been through. “Whatever progress they’ve made with him is going to go down the drain, I know it.”
“They can’t do this!” A single tear slid down Squalo’s cheek before the man hastily wiped at his eyes, trying to hide his weakness; he was finally starting to feel better about himself, and then they drop this on him. He sobbed as he shook his head, rubbing at his eyes as more tears followed the first few. “They can’t… You’re all the only family I have anymore… Even Levi… I don’t want to be alone… It’s the scariest thing I can think of…”
While Xanxus resented such emotions, he could make an exception for now; he himself was stressed with this new information, not knowing what to do.
“Don’t cry, Squalo.” Mammon reached out, patting the man’s shoulder. “Don’t cry.”
“Fucking, what is it with people always telling me different things?!” Squalo looked up and glared at Mammon with tear-filled eyes, his voice louder than usual. He drew his knees to his chest as he curled further into Xanxus, his mind running a mile a minute. “It’s either, ‘You can cry, Squalo’, or, ‘Don’t cry, Squalo’. Why can’t people make up their fucking minds as to what I’m supposed to do?! Stop fucking confusing me!”
Mammon was unfazed by her friend’s shouting, understanding. Instead, she replied in a firm, unshaken tone. “I say don’t cry because we can get through this together.”
Staring at his friend for a few seconds more, Squalo just buried his face into his knees as he cried. As much as if felt like she had done the wrong thing, Mammon knew she had taken the right course of action by telling the others what she had heard; if they hadn’t any idea of this, and someone just suddenly came and took them away from each other, the impact would be much more devastating than it already was in this moment.
