A/N: Just wanted to put this up before I forget. Even if you don't find this helpful it'll help me to keep track of which pokemon has exactly what nature. Sometimes I forget...there's so much competing for memory space in my brain. Anyways...Rorsh is adamant, Nox is rash, Ember is bold, and Eevee is careful.
Heartfelt Interference
Chapter twenty-three
Age Eighteen
You smiled as you watched Eevee. It had been a little over a year since you'd gotten his egg, since he'd hatched. Yet he still retained this childlike innocence that you hadn't quite seen in your other three eeveelutions. Nox had gotten close in a way but he'd been more playful than innocent. Whereas Nox would approach someone he wanted to play without pausing, Eevee was much more nervous. It really was like watching a four year old trying to figure out if someone else would play with them. There wasn't any fear involved, just nerves. You watched as Eevee carefully reach out to a wild rattata.
Knowing that Eevee would be fine you turned back to your latest project. Your father's concept of needing to train Ember up to compete in something still held despite everything that had happened. Of course your father didn't know all the details. You had kept it that way for a lot of personal reasons. As much as you respected your parents there were just some things that you weren't comfortable talking to them about. But other than that you did try to respect your parent's and their 'orders'. Which meant that you needed to try and prepare Ember for some form of competition.
Considering the fact that Ember was, obviously, a fire pokemon there were only a few places that you could practice with him for a safe environment. Any strong fire attacks had a tendency to spread to foliage. Which wiped out a lot of possible areas in your surroundings. In fact, it brought it down to just two. There was a rocky area by the hills (the ones that Nox had evolved in protecting you from a ghost pokemon's cruel tricks) or there was a simulated desert area just beyond that. Of course the simulated desert area had to be covered in a small dome so it didn't affect the rest of the environment in any negative fashion but you still could have gotten in there if you'd wanted.
Which you didn't. The desert was hot by nature and that wasn't a very inviting environment for you. You'd already worked in there during your training for ground and fire type pokemons enough to know that. As such that wasn't the best place to be if you wanted to whip up a special treat for the pokemon. Out in the field as you were, testing Ember's abilities, it was hard to make too many different types for the pokemon so you had to balance they all liked with what they didn't. Rorsh didn't like dry foods yet he loved spicey foods while Ember couldn't stand spicy ones. Eevee inherited Rorsh's dislike of dry foods yet at the same time he ended up really liking bitter. Nox on the other hand really liked dry foods unlike Eevee and Rorsh.
So as you had Ember practicing his flare blitz against an unseen opponent, you also mixed up a batch of pokepuffs that none of them would object to. When you had a full kitchen it was easier to cook to everyone's specific tastes but you had decided to use the local berries and only a handful of ingredients that you'd brought from home. Plus the whole point in spending your time off in the rock canyon on your day off was to help Ember learn finesse with his attacks. His fire might have been strong, his ability to use them might have been great, but if he couldn't use it just so then it wouldn't make for a very good show. And that was your goal - your father said you had to compete with him but he said nothing about it having to be a pokemon battle. So you'd chosen the one thing that didn't have battling other pokemon of any sort. Which meant that you and Ember needed to be ready for a pokemon showcase in a year.
As Ember darted between the rock formations, body alight with fire from his flame blitz, you started to move some rocks into formation. It wasn't perfect but you were able to find rocks for form a crude, rudimentary oven. Or at least what could function as one with the help of a fire pokemon.
"Ember!" You called out as you turned around to watch him.
Really, he was a thing of beauty to behold. Even if being anywhere near such a flame made you sweat it was almost like watching magic. The way the heat dissipated in the air created this sort of distorted sight around where the flames had been. It twisted and turned the world in surprising ways. Although you stood a respectable distance back because you knew better than to get too close to an open flame. Which is why you let him come to you after calling out verses going to get him.
He didn't make you wait very long. As he moved in closer you slid the pan into your rock formation so that it was guarded on all but three sides. You moved away from it and motioned for Ember to step in closer.
"Keep the heat wave mild this time," you spoke the moment he decided to start poking his nose into the 'cave' you'd made.
Ember withdrew his nose as he sat back happily. He knew exactly what was about to be made with his help - pokepuffs. At the sound of his happily barked out 'okay!' you noticed that Eevee had stopped playing as well. You were pretty sure he'd said goodbye to his newest friend before heading back over to where you and Ember were.
Ember scooted back for only a moment before lowering his hunches. He opened his mouth and let hot air seep out, air which built up heat to the point where a small fire erupted. The fire traveled out of his mouth and was caught in the makeshift oven that you'd made. It took more than a few of his breaths, the temperature escalating ever so slightly, to cook the pokepuffs all the way through. Of course, Ember was more than capable of hotter flames from Heat Wave but that wasn't what you needed from him. That was one attack you had trained him to have finesse on if only for the fact that it was extremely useful for baking out in the middle of the ranch. He'd been all too happy to learn that as it helped get him pokeblocks and puffs when you had the ingredients and things to mix them in. Which was why you tried not to bake them at home because you had a feeling he'd get too insistent that they were good for his health and care and thus would demand them everyday. Just like he did with his grooming sessions.
The scent of the sweet puffs was tempting but as Ember reached in to pull them out you had to remind yourself that you needed to wait. Cautiously you pulled them out of the pan trying not to puncture them in any way. You sat them on top of the foldable cooling rack that you'd brought along for the day.
"It will be a few minutes till they're ready. But you did great cooking them, they came out really good," you told Ember with a bit of a smile.
He nodded and spoke out, "Of course. Now, it's your turn."
You stared at him for a moment but you understood what he meant without a problem. It was just that you were unsure about the entirety of what was about to take place. Plus you weren't sure that pokemon, including Eevee, would leave the unfinished pokepuffs alone long enough for them to cool. Before you moved over to clear area with Ember you put the cover over the cooling treats. It would slow down the cooling time but it would definitely keep away the stray pokemon.
"Can I eat them now?" Eevee asked right as you finished covering them up.
"Not right now, they need to cool down."
Eevee stared up at you with large, glittering eyes as he practically begged. You could feel yourself caving in as your focus went directly to Eevee and nothing else. But before you rescind your decision you shook your head furiously as you stared down at Eevee with your arm crossed.
"Don't try to charm me Eevee, I'm too used to you being a cute little thing for it to make much of a difference anyways." Which was definitely true. After a year of watching his Baby-doll Eyes ability grow stronger until he finally learned Charm, you knew the sensation intimately. Probably almost as well as Eevee did himself by now.
Eevee lowered his head and his ears slid down. You bent down and rubbed between his ears before standing back up. Despite the fact that he was upset over not getting a pokepuff right away you weren't about to cave into his every whim. That just wasn't a good way to raise anyone. Without giving any more reprimand or affection than that you started towards where Ember had walked off to.
"Protect yourself."
That was all the warning you got before Ember boldly rushed in. You really didn't have too much time to prepare which meant that instead of doing as he no doubt wanted you to, you dodged to the side. The next attack however couldn't be dodged. He set a lava plume your way. Within a heart beat of a moment you'd shut your eyes and held your breath. There was a tightening feeling as though you were drawing something within yourself and then it was outwards, pushing and protecting you. A shimmering green barrier formed a dome around you as you kneeled on the ground, trying to keep your mind off of what would have happened if it had failed. As the lava plume passed your green shimmer shield broke, shattering like a cloud of glitter falling to the floor.
You took a deep breath and stood up. This time as you moved forward, you summoned the barrier at will. Ember kept rushing at you with his flare blitz. You held up the barrier as you tried to corner him. He kept pounding against your shield and more than once you were pretty sure it was going to break. But it held. Right up till you had him pressed against the wall. And then before you could press your advantage all the air out of your lungs rushed out, exhaustion setting in all at once.
You could feel your body giving way even as the world kind of danced before your vision. You took a few breaths as you went to your knees then slowly sat down. Ember stopped before you and let his flame die down, his body skittering to a halt just before it made contact with you.
It took far too long for you to even get the ability to stand back up. Or at least that's what it felt like. After a year of training what abilities that you and the eeveelutions had been able to figure out, you intimately knew what it was like for pokemon when they were exhausted. It was like you were about to pass out, in fact it was a scary sensation. It was like you couldn't breathe, couldn't hear, and even seeing became a problem. Standing up, understandably, was out of the question when you pushed yourself to that point. Which was why it took you longer to recover than it should have considering that was the first thing you tried. You were quite stubborn after all. Ember had another word for that type of behavior but stubborn was the kinder variant. Which is why you went with that instead.
After a bottle of water, a bit of dried oran berry (which Eevee brought you from your daypack), and five minutes of rest you were able to focus once more. Though with how tired every muscle in your body felt you knew better than to press the issue trying to train anymore. Ember didn't even bring it up as you moved off back towards you little station in the shade. It wasn't shaded by a tree or anything, just a large sized bolder, but it did help keep you from getting sunburned while you waited for the pokepuffs to completely cool down.
Eevee, of course, kept nuzzling you and playing with your hair. It was a familiar gesture that kind of reminded you of a young Nox. But instead of being happy to just cuddle he kept moving about. He flicked your hair and tapped at your hand. As you waited and watched Ember practice some more you kept playing with Eevee. You didn't move about as he did but you did tap your fingers, moving your hands about every so often so that Eevee could pretend to pounce on them. It was nice to have such an affectionate pokemon. One that you didn't have to worry about it being a game of favorites. Ember was good for keeping you on your toes, Nox was good at responding to your emotions, Rorsh helped keep you level and rooted, but it was Eevee who took up the spot of keeping you entertained with the silliest and smallest of actions.
After a bit of time passed you tested the pokepuffs with your hands. Once you deemed they were cool enough you went about whipping up some of the filling. Most pokepuffs that you had scene so far had the frosting on the outside. You'd done a bit of a twist on that by breaking a small hole in the top and filling up the airy piece of dough with the whipped up frosting. Once the frosting got to the top you put on some whipped cream and a piece of sugared berry before calling it done. Considering how messy every pokemon you knew was willing to get while eating them, even Ember who was finicky about his fur, you'd say that it was a good idea.
Today, however, you decided to do something extra special. Instead of putting it with a sugared berry, you sprinkled shaved rare candy over the top. It wasn't enough to level any pokemon up from the start of a level, but it did have enough oomph to make them feel like they'd just won a battle. Or, at least, that's what you'd been told by your mom. This was the first time that you would let your pokemon try it. After placing Nox's and Rorsh's serving away into a small container, you handed Ember and Eevee their share.
The moment that they bit into it you could feel the joy. It had been a sweet treat after a day of playing (for Eevee) and training (for Ember). Even you enjoyed it. The last one you pinched up and tossed at any of the wild pokemon who were brave enough to come out and see what all the fuss was about. As soon as the pokepuffs were done with, however, your attention was right back to your small group for the day.
Why?
Because Eevee had just started glowing.
The glow made his already pale fur even brighter. It extended outwards until he was a ball of white light. You watched, fascinated, as Eevee reformed into a larger shape. One that kept wiggling even as it settled. The things waving around, you found out, were thin ribbon like appendages. The white fur was rimmed in powder and pastel pink, bright and colorful. He tilted and looked about himself as you did as well. He had powder blue paws, tail, ears, and a spot on his furry head. His eyes were wide and pale pink, which matched some of the detailing on the ribbons that wrapped around his body.
"Well, looks like I can't call you Eevee anymore," you said kindly. "Any idea what name you would like now that you're a sylveon?"
Sylveon tilted his head as he stared at you. He slowly shook his head. You pat his head and found your arms wrapped up in the ribbon like appendages from his body. He seemed quite pleased at the sensation. For you, it felt like liquid silk was being rubbed up and down your arm with just enough pressure to almost feel like a hug. You felt them wrapping up your arm until they'd gotten to your shoulder. Funny thing was that you were pretty sure that they weren't normally that length. Or at least they didn't look like that before he'd started to intertwin you in them.
"How about Eons?" You asked as you watched his ribbons continue to stretch around you.
"Because he takes eons to make up his mind," Ember said with a bit of a laugh.
The newly turned sylveon looked hurt. You didn't bother to reprimand Ember over his mean comment mostly because you knew he wasn't going to listen either way. There was only so much you could do to change how a pokemon behaved.
"Because it was a few thousand years before fairy type were discovered," you said kindly. "And because your ribbons seem to go on for eons."
He perked up and nodded. "I like it."
"Good. Now, let's get back to Nox and Rorsh to show them the new you. You ready?"
Of course, it took a bit more encouragement for the cautious eeveelution to be ready to go face his father. Although once that was over you were sure he would be back to the affectionate cute lump that he'd always been.
