Sorry guys, I know I haven't responded to your guys' comments, but I will next chapter! I'm trying to clean my betta tanks (I have four tanks with a total of 29 fish and 2 dwarf frogs) before I go to work! I will begin the next chapter in Faith tonight and hopefully have it posted later tonight. Real late. Hey it's pizza night and payday and I'ma be in a good mood after work *knocks on wood* unless something terrible happens and it'll be perfect for writing. So keep reviewing and I'll do a huge love forum at the beginning of the next chapter!
Chapter 22: When Hope if Beyond Reach
Abel was flying high over Rome, his wings propelling him with massive thrusts that swirled the rain droplets around him violently. It had been raining since Alex left with only one respite in the week since her disappearance. He’d been so relieved when it began raining again that he’d wept and left his room immediately. Lady Catherina had been urging him to keep his crusnik form hidden so that the people of Rome and church officials would not panic and begin questioning her, but he couldn’t help his elation when the rain began again. He flew above the city to see that the epicenter of the storm lay over a grouping of old abandoned buildings that were scheduled to be refurbished. He dove down into the storm and began scouring the streets, moving into the buildings, crashing through locked doors and rattling the walls in his desperation.
He entered the last building within the epicenter and could hear distant voices. A thrill ran through him and he raced up the stairs toward the voices. As he ran, he vaguely noted that this particular building didn’t look as dilapidated as the other buildings. There were furnishings here, a few dim lights here and there and as he grew closer to where he believed the voices were coming from, he heard a sharp female cry. It was Alex and his heart began thundering in his chest. He flew up the stairwell, honing in on the room where her voice had come from and again, just as he reached the door, he heard her choked cry again.
He threw the door wide and the sight that met his raging red eyes made his heart sink into his feet. In the middle of the room was a giant four poster bed, strung with red and black sheers. Spread about the room were blood red candles, lending an unearthly light to the room. Cain lay on the bed and Alex straddled him, her back arched in her pleasure, her movements against him almost frantic in her need. Cain’s hands roamed over her body, tracing her spine, fondling her breasts. They seemed not to notice Abel as he stood their, his sorrow welling, despite his boisterous entrance. Abel watched in horror as Cain pinched Alex’s nipple and she soared over the edge into her completion. She threw her head back, mouth open with her sex cry, and called Cain’s name as she came.
Abel loosed a cry of his own, blood tears spilling over his porcelain cheeks, his face contorted into a rare show of rage. His scythe materialized and he sent it crashing into the bed, gauging deep into Cain’s chest. Blood erupted violently from his mouth, spraying the sheers and Alex screamed, as she was thrown from the shattered bed and slammed into the floor painfully. Looking up, she saw the malice that painted Abel’s face and his scythe plunged deep into his brother’s chest and blood spraying from the wound in steady rhythmic pumps. Alex screamed again, throwing herself back onto the remnants of the bed at Cain’s side.
“Cain! Cain!” Alex shook him and he turned weakly to look at her, taking a lock of her raven hair in his ashen fingers.
“Beautiful Alexandra.” He looked merely tired and Abel wrenched the scythe from his chest, causing Cain’s face to scrunch in pain.
“God damn it, Abel!” She threw a massive splinter from the bed at him, a weak throw that he easily dodged. He stared hatefully at the two of them as she returned her attention to his brother. “Cain, let me call Isaac. Isaac can fix this, just like he did last time.”
“No, Alexandra, don’t summon Isaac. He cannot fix me forever. My time has come and Abel has seen to my final affairs. I’m just glad that I got to spend time with you before my time was up. You are so beautiful, Alexandra. You light the world around you. Carry me with you in your heart, and my life will have had meaning.”
“Please, Cain! Please, let me call--”
“Shhh. Alex, go with Abel. He will take care of you. Go with him and do good in the world, rather than letting old wounds fester and drive you to madness like I did.”
“Cain, I love you.” Alex’s tears flowed freely and her tone was utterly broken.
“Alexandra. I never knew love until I knew you.” Cain smiled, turning to Abel with his last reserve of energy. “Take care of her, brother. She will change the world in which you live. For most of my life, I hated you. I hated that we couldn’t be alike. The two of us, so beautiful, so intelligent, so different. I hated you that you couldn’t love me as I loved you. My brother, myself, who I put above all others. Forgive me, my brother, for I have finally, at long last, fallen for someone else. I have fallen in love with your love and I have done an unjust thing to you both. I leave this world now, loving you both and praying that you will forgive me in time.”
“I cast thee into hell, Cain, the brother that sought to destroy everything I am.” Cain smiled knowingly up at Abel, he eyes straining to fall on Alex. Alex placed her small hand on his cheek, turning his head towards her and his smile became truly serene.
“If all the angels are half so beautiful and half as good in spirit as you, I will sorely miss heaven.” Cain’s chest went down shakily and never swelled with the next breath. The light from his eyes faded until they appeared grey, and his serene smile still in place. Alex wailed in anguish, kissing his cheek as though she could wake him if she tried hard enough.
“Enough of this! Alex, get away from that murderer’s body.”
“You are the only murderer here, Abel! You are so wretched, so dismal, that you must destroy anyone else’s happiness! Look what you’ve done!” Alex’s tears flowed freely, half drowning herself with her own tears.
“Traitor! I’ll be damned if I take you back to the AX!” Alex screamed in frustration, Abel’s abrupt feelings of malice and hate toward her shocking even to himself. He watched as she slipped into a robe, tying the sash, and stormed from the room, taking the stairs to the roof. He followed her, questioning her as they went, demanding to know what she intended to do. She refused adamantly to respond and continued until they were on the roof in the pounding rain. He reached for her wrist to stay her and question her, but she yanked free violently, her eyes blazing at him hatefully. He was shocked to see her face so changed.
“Alex please. It was a mistake to say I wouldn’t take you. I will take you with me back to Cardinal Sforza.”
“You’ve already given up, Abel. There is no hope for me, nothing left in this world.” Alex’s voice sounded dull and lackluster, as though she truly had no hope. He watched in horror as she ran for the edge, getting there before he could reach her, her feet left the roof and her body disappeared over the ledge as his fingers closed on empty air.
“Alex!” Abel woke with a start, covered in sweat. His heart was thundering, and he felt physically sick. He couldn’t shake the anger and torment of his dream and he sat in his bed, listening to the rain as he wept. Alex felt so far beyond reach now and so did his sanity. Was there a meaning behind this dream or was it his own fear over Alex’s disappearance? He cradled his head in anguish, his tears falling to stain his sheets.
