The road was clear on the way back, which served to be possibly the best news they had all week. Goku , Nue and Gojyo had to cramp up in the back of Jeep and so they took fairly regular breaks. Hakkai and Sanzo kept watch for interruptions and on the night’s camp they were all relieved to be out and into a camp for some relaxation.

Gojyo had remained silent the entire trip, for the most part, only commenting when he ran out of smokes and had to make do with Sanzo’s, and then to get a piss later on that afternoon. When they made camp Nue sat away from him; she was concerned that he was irritated by her for falling prey to the events. Hakkai sensed it too and made Gojyo go over to talk with her. In the end they sat up till fairly late, and thankfully the others gave them the privacy to do so.

They set off the following morning and despite a couple of interruptions with roadside stragglers picking fights they made good time into the town. They found the place easily enough and after setting her up with the woman in charge, handing what money they could over in donations and goodbye’s, the woman had been made as safe as they could. It was unlikely Jianyi would be foolish enough to risk a fight into the place and so as long as she stuck it out there she should be okay. It was the ‘should’ part that bothered her but she knew they had little choice, and really they had already done a lot for her.

The men took back to the road and then without her in ear shot it was Goku that broke the silence.

“He is gonna get his ass kicked right?”

“Sure is,” Gojyo looked at him, “that asshat deserves a kicking to hell and back. It’s sick and twisted. Dirty fuck…”

“Any chance you can do that minus a string of expletives?” Sanzo snorted, and then looked at them with the same determination. He wasn’t prepared to let him get away with the torture he’d now inflicted on two people.

“We need to find him first.” Hakkai voiced. “It might not be as easy as you think, we hid his new toy away and we came back for Gojyo. He’s not going to be happy at all.”

“I don’t care about his personal welfare.” Gojyo grumbled. “I hope he’s as pissed off as I am. God I just want this to be over, we got enough shit to deal with already.”

“Like what?” Hakkai looked at him. “We can postpone the journey, we are making good time, we can always keep an eye out but this has to come first. Once she’s safe we can carry on and make time to come back this way and found out if…”

“That’s what I am on about!” Gojyo snapped. “I got you two in my life, I don’t need another complication.”

“I am a complication?” Sanzo gave him a cold look.

“That’s not what I meant,” Gojyo looked at him, “don’t put words in my mouth. What I mean is we’re already working through a relationship.”

“Working through?” Sanzo practically growled at him. “Either it is, or it isn’t and if it isn’t get the fuck off the Jeep and get back into town.”

“I am not…” Hakkai covered Gojyo’s mouth. The redhead was too incensed to take a step back from the fight and Sanzo was too raw with the emotions he was feeling to do it either.

“Guys…” His voice was soft, the expression neutral. “I believe what he means is that a child is a scary thing, Sanzo you made the choice to try and maintain a relationship with us both, as well as carry on business as normal. So let’s try and find this guy, serve up a little pay-back and then get back to the job we intended too.”

Goku nodded to Hakkai, he was very glad to hear one of them still had some sense about them. It fell silent again. Goku decided he had been putting up with it enough and disappeared off to get something to eat for the evening; they still had to find a room for the night too. Sanzo took off to do that and Hakkai looked at the redhead.

“Don’t be an insensitive prick with him,” he touched the scarred cheek, “he needs the validation his decision was the right one, don’t push him away when he needs you as much as you need him huh?”

“Yeah alright,” Gojyo sighed, “I’ll apologise to him once we’re back. Oh hey,” he smirked and Hakkai rolled his eyes waiting for the perverted comment, “what?”

“Nothing, just say it.” He laughed softly.

“Was just wondering how he’d be about public sex.” Gojyo smirked.

“Well I am not so sure he is as easy going, or outgoing as me.” Hakkai laughed. “Besides you can ask that one.”

“Well I may.” He nodded.

“I am pretty sure you will, but it will be after a few beers. I know what you are like.” Hakkai looked over as Sanzo came there way, he’d managed to secure a place they’d stayed in before. “Already sorted? That was fast.”

“Got the same place as before, the robes have their advantages…” He stopped, seeing the look on the redheads’ face. “Not like that.”

“Oh yes like that. I can get my hands on you under those things if you just took ya damned pants off for once.” He grinned. Gojyo leant to him, kissed his lips and got pushed back for the effort. “Humour me, I want to see just how good that poker face of yours is.”

“Maybe.” He muttered and the conversation ended as Goku came into sight. They had a room, some food and a chance for a quick rest before they hit the road once more.

With the room sorted they went down for dinner, noting Goku had already eaten enough to sink a small ship which meant he was happy to sleep and let them bring more up later. The three headed down to the restaurant/bar area and sat at a table. It felt nice to sit and chat, they actually had time for a fairly decent conversation but the rain started and the situation changed abruptly.

“Great shit weather now too.” Gojyo muttered. He looked at Sanzo with softer eyes. “You alright?”

“Fine.” Sanzo muttered. “Let’s just get ready to go on the road tomorrow. Maybe an early night is a good idea.” He downed the last of his beer and stood up. He was surprised to find Hakkai was the one that stopped him, he pulled him back on the seat and smirked. “What?”

“I noticed something that’s all.”

“Time to cheer you up.” Gojyo grinned as Hakkai got another round in. “Now sit back, light up and relax.”

Sanzo sighed, Hakkai had noticed that the comment about his trousers being in the way had been taken up, he hadn’t really planned to let him do anything but was planning to point it out once they had got into the room, not it seemed that plan had backfired. And yet he still didn’t get up… Okay, okay, so he wanted to see what the redhead would do!
