CHAPTER 24
Ryosuke wondered whether going downstairs was safe. He put his cigarette out in his outdoor ashtray. The dark-haired Takahashi brother stood on his miniature balcony. At this late hour the love hotels did not accept clients. Keisuke could not take Fujiwara elsewhere to satisfy his libido's whims. However, Ryosuke wished his brother had chosen their temporary bedroom instead of the couch.
Keisuke had a strong adventurous streak when it came to sexuality. When living with a brother that dated partners with wild personalities, missing the fact was hard to do. Several one-night stands had happened that Ryosuke knew about. Keisuke had drawn severe lines with those partners. However, Keisuke had softened his rules when he dated Michiko and then Akiho afterward.
Akiho's stint as a child prostitute had stripped her of her morals. It was not as if Akiho had understood she could refuse to do anything a man demanded. Desperation had ripped most virtues away before Akiho met Keisuke. Akiho became a tragic loss. Their violent ending was because of Keisuke's inability to compromise. He had not given her enough time to change. Her prior abuse had made Keisuke angry when he found himself being regarded in the same way she had regarded other men. He had gotten impatient with her too often. As Akiho had struggled to learn, Keisuke's irritation grew with her backsliding. Akiho's tormented life, before Keisuke took an interest in her, caused escalating fits of insanity to manifest in her behavior. Keisuke's temper finally snapped because she could not fit the role he had in mind for her either.
Michiko, on the other hand, had been a genuine whore. She had hit on him several times behind Keisuke's back. Although Ryosuke rebuffed her bluntly, Michiko would not give up on getting into his bed. Ryosuke had gotten angry about her continued come ons. Michiko had gotten Keisuke into several three-way situations with other men that Ryosuke learned about over the seven months they were together. The last straw was Michiko asking Keisuke to talk him into such an encounter. When Ryosuke overheard their argument, he exposed Michiko's pursuit of himself to their family. The truth had horrified Obāsan since she had introduced Michiko to Keisuke hoping they would do well together.
This was not the first time Ryosuke had found Keisuke being lewd in the family living room. On the previous episodes, Keisuke thought nobody would be home for hours. Walking into the house to find Keisuke and his girlfriends in various stages of sex had rendered Ryosuke immune. Or, so he had thought. Starting down the stairs to find his younger brother and Fujiwara in such an intimate situation revised his opinion. It was not two men engaged in sex that had shocked Ryosuke. It was Fujiwara's very sensual and focused expression on his younger brother that had shocked Ryosuke.
The older Takahashi brother had suspected Fujiwara had deep emotions. However, the reality of Fujiwara's emotions fully displayed in an unguarded moment forced Ryosuke to revise his opinion. Keisuke's life mate was very deeply emotional, and completely open with Keisuke. One thing Ryosuke understood. Fujiwara loved Keisuke with the sum of his being.
Such complete emotional bonds to another individual held unique dangers for both. Completely submerging himself in love meant Fujiwara was also capable of equally deep and passionate hatred when wounded. Looking up at the night sky, Ryosuke realized how Fujiwara gained so many concessions from his younger brother. Few ever experienced such profound levels of attachment. Yet, Keisuke got such profound emotions from Fujiwara. Due to Fujiwara's choice to love him completely, that love compelled Keisuke to make sure Fujiwara was happy. Fujiwara dominated Keisuke's emotions by giving his heart into Keisuke's care without the normal reservations others maintained.
A glance at his clock told Ryosuke enough time had passed. He could finally make coffee to ease his exhaustion to finish his toxicology report. He headed down the stairs listening for any noises. As he had hoped, the couple had gone to bed. Ryosuke opened the window to air out the room. It took only a few minutes to make his coffee. On his way back to work on his paper, Ryosuke noticed something on the floor. Bending over, Ryosuke spied one of Takeuchi's magazines and a notebook. He retrieved them, deciding to take them to the study. Curiosity about Keisuke's first night of training also motivated him. Ryosuke walked down the short hallway.
Ryosuke knocked, calling through the study's closed door, "Keisuke, Fujiwara, are you still awake?"
"Come in, Aniki." Ryosuke entered. Fujiwara was laying with his head on Keisuke's shoulder. He was on his back with Keisuke's other arm over his stomach. Keisuke had curled around his mate, threading their fingers together. Fujiwara looked to be asleep. He slid the door shut. Ryosuke paced across the room, and set the magazine and notebook on the computer desk.
He turned to his younger brother, asking softly, "How was your first night of training, little brother?"
Keisuke's contented expression shifted with the speed of a lightning strike. The blond rolled onto his back and frowned. "I got hammered when I got to Akagi. You decided to let me handle things as I saw fit, which is fine, Aniki. I dealt with everything, including Arai."
Fujiwara turned onto his side, eyes opening wide. He tugged his threaded fingers from Keisuke's as irritation clouded his features. Keisuke glanced at his mate then returned to looking at him. Fujiwara sat up with a frown.
"Nani happened, Keisuke?"
"Arai's even more trouble than Hiroshi and Fumihiro told us, Aniki. I kicked him off the team. He tried to start a fight in front of the team. Fumihiro's making sure his sticker's gone within forty-eight hours."
Ryosuke's heart leapt into his throat. Keisuke got into a fight because of his decision to allow Keisuke to handle the situation because it involved his private life. Ryosuke was tired because of major research papers and his doctorate thesis. His temper flared, almost getting out of control. Worry over whether Keisuke could keep the Red Suns to their original ethic's code rose.
"You didn't get violent, did you?!" Ryosuke barely controlled his voice.
"iie. I kept my cool, Aniki." Keisuke grabbed Takumi's hand as he looked down at him. "Calm down, dear heart. I yelled at his fat ass, giving him plenty to think about. I made the crowd wonder about him too." His expression became thoughtful. "Takumi, did you piss off a chubby guy driving a black 180-SX with the Red Suns sticker?"
Fujiwara's brows furrowed, thinking about Keisuke's question. He slowly shook his head after several moments of consideration. "Kenji-sempai's the only person I've talked to that has a 180, Keisuke. I've never talked to anyone from the Red Suns outside Project D. I said hello when your extra teammates joined us for that last battle. I don't think I said anything that could have pissed anyone off. I didn't really say much at all."
Keisuke's expression remained thoughtful as he looked between himself and Fujiwara. Ryosuke leaned against the large computer desk. His spiky-haired brother spoke as if to himself. "Naze is Arai attacking your rep then? Arai framed all of his jabs to make people hate you, Takumi. If you've never said, or done anything to him, it could be jealousy, . . . I guess." The doubtful undertone in Keisuke's words bothered Ryosuke.
"Arai's been pushing the rumor about Fujiwara since the shooting. Hiroshi, and Fumihiro have mentioned it to me. Most people think Fujiwara has a thing for you because of him, little brother."
Keisuke vented a sigh. "They have everything backwards. It doesn't bother me so much that they have us together because we are. Still, Takumi doesn't need this shit! I'm a well-known bisexual so have dealt with this before. I think Arai could be trying to ruin my rep using Takumi's name. I've got too many gangster friends to attack directly and minasan knows it. My old brotherhood still respects me."
"Very true, little brother. As a retired gangster, your reputation keeps people from talking about you. They fear punishment on multiple fronts. This could be an attempt to ruin your reputation through Fujiwara. We may need a strategy to take the heat off your mate in order to calm things down that are geared toward smearing you."
"My old gang's still a force on the streets. I can get more information if I ask, Aniki. It doesn't hurt to find out more about the rumors. Something about this doesn't feel right."
Ryosuke grasped his chin in one hand and cupped his elbow with the other. "I'm worried about this ongoing attack on Fujiwara too. You were right to strip Arai of his place. The Red Suns code frowns on being unprofessional. Others in the Red Suns will think twice about upholding our philosophy now. Wasn't Arai one of the extra security people that volunteered for the expedition Mogi was at?"
Keisuke nodded. "Hai. That gets people to listen to him. I told the crowd that you and I knew about Mogi for a couple of months. Minasan knows we never thought she'd go beyond phone harassment when Arai blamed Fujiwara for Project D's stall out. Matsimoto and Fumihiro ripped into me over keeping quiet about her. They are mad at you too."
Fujiwara shook his head. "Minasan on the expedition has a right to hate me, Keisuke. Mogi did serious damage. Arai-san probably got the shit scared out of him that night. I owe Matsimoto and Fumihiro a huge apology for wanting to keep everything about Mogi quiet."
Keisuke grumbled, "Arai claims you're unreliable, unstable, and stuff like that, Takumi. Arai said you're the only non Red Suns member with Project D. He cut Matsimoto off when he tried to deny it." Keisuke turned his head and stared him down. "Arai also whined that Project D's reputation directly affects the Red Suns reputation, Aniki. He claimed Takumi's behavior when I was dying that night is ruining both. He tried to make everything Takumi's fault. I had to point out that Takumi's not part of the Red Suns and other things."
"Fujiwara isn't unreliable, or unstable. Project D isn't the Red Suns. I designed D around the two best drivers I could find with very different technical skills. Project D realized my theory about how to drive faster than others on mountain passes. Etsuya and Matsimoto are full time mechanics I asked to join Project D for a reason. They were never Red Suns."
Fujiwara's voice throbbed with remorse. "But, Arai-san has a point about my being unreliable. I got into that wreck. You almost had to forfeit the downhill because of my stupidity, Ryosuke-san. My personal problems destroyed the Kanto Project before it was completed too. That makes me a problem like Arai says I am.."
Keisuke snapped at his mate. "Arai's big mouth is the problem here, Takumi. Arai tried to force me and Aniki to drop you from D's roster. He said we should replace you with a Red Suns driver to finish the Kanto Project next year. He went so far as to say you're the only non-Red Suns teammate on D's roster. Etsuya and Matsimoto aren't Red Suns, but Arai refused to accept that. The asshole even tried to use Okāsan to ruin your life, Takumi."
Ryosuke felt ill as he watched the couple. Keisuke and Fujiwara glared at each other. Fujiwara grumbled. "I can understand that people want Ryosuke-san to switch drivers because of the shooting." The youthful ace snarled with genuine anger. "But, bringing Kāsan Yukiko into this is hitting your whole family below the belt! That's wrong. How could your okāsan ruin my reputation anyway?"
"That's a very good question, Fujiwara. Naze did Arai bring our family into this argument? Creating problems for our family gives strength to your theory that this is an attack on you personally, Keisuke."
"Arai thinks Okāsan was keeping Takumi out of trouble with Oyaji-san, Aniki. He pissed people off, and really hurt his own street credibility by bringing her up tonight." Keisuke gave Fujiwara a light shake. "Promise me you'll be careful if you're at Akagi, Takumi. Even if Arai's no longer a Red Suns member, he may still go there. I'm not sure he won't attack you to get even with me. I also told him you'd clean his clock if he messed with you."
Fujiwara's eyes widened as he searched Keisuke's face. "Naze did you say I'd fight with him, Keisuke?"
"He's too hung up on your orientation, and whether or not I'm in your bed for comfort. Insinuating I was a threat to his perverted agendas got people wondering about his motives. That's where the ass whipping comment came in. Fumihiro, Matsimoto, and Kenta agreed to stick close to you whenever I take you to meet the others that were playing extra security that night. Don't go anywhere without at least two of us. Ok?"
Ryosuke stared at his brother, shocked by his demand. "Do you think Arai will attack Fujiwara?"
"I'm not ruling it out, Aniki. I almost lost Takumi once already. I was an arrogant ass when Mogi was bugging him. Being jealous as hell convinced me I was overreacting. Ignoring my gut got Takumi shot. That's one mistake I won't make again. Things Arai said tonight makes me think he'll get violent if he catches Takumi alone. Takumi can't fight on equal ground until his leg heals. I want to know he's safe from that possibility."
Fujiwara's temper flared. "Keisuke? I'm not going to cause problems. Arai's pushing rumors. That doesn't mean he'll attack me. I do have to rebuild my reputation because of Mogi. I need to face minasan. Mogi became minasan's worst nightmare that night."
Keisuke's anger vibrated up from his chest in guttural tones. "No way, Fujiwara! You aren't going anywhere near that asshole! Fumihiro, Matsimoto, and Kenta know you want to see the extra crew to apologize. They're all worried about Arai's attitude too. They have been for a while now. I'm factoring their concern into this. We agreed he gets zero chance of seeing you. They don't want Arai around when you visit Akagi."
Fujiwara turned his head to look at him. Ryosuke gave him a stern look. "Keisuke's right, Fujiwara. Your thigh's still healing. We won't be careless a second time. Having others concerned about Arai is enough reason for us to be on our guard. You should be too. For now, do as Keisuke is suggesting to insure there are no problems."
Fujiwara huffed, "Fine. But, I don't like the idea of my teammates babysitting me. Once my leg's out of the brace, I'll go to Akina to train."
Keisuke gave Fujiwara an odd look, faced him, and changed subjects. "Fumihiro and Matsimoto said we have a serious lack of faith in them. They're pissed that we didn't tell them about Mogi."
"It was a bad decision. They have a right to be angry, little brother. Fujiwara doesn't like discussing his problems, so we kept quiet. However, because of the Mogi incident, we will discuss any more trouble experienced with anyone potentially threatened. Agreed, Fujiwara?"
Fujiwara nodded. "I don't want to put anyone in danger. It makes sense to tell minasan if something bad could happen to them. If anything goes wrong, I'll quit the team before things get out of control next time."
Keisuke tugged Fujiwara against his side and wrapped his arm around him. "Fumihiro was there when Okāsan panicked about my actions when we were both shot, Takumi. He demanded to know the truth tonight."
"So, . . . Fumihiro knows we're together?" Fujiwara's expression tightened. Keisuke kept him flush against his side. Ryosuke heard Fujiwara's uneasiness in his voice.
"Nani did you say? I'd like to know how much information you gave him, little brother."
"Matsimoto and Kenta were there, Aniki. I got in their faces because they were bitching that I don't trust them. Reminding them about homophobic bastards attitudes and problems caused by my orientation shut them up."
"It really hurt you when you realized you love me, Keisuke. This relationship wasn't something you wanted, . . . at first. Losing your friends because of me wouldn't be right. Even your grandparents have problems with me."
"It's not like our teammates are ignorant about your orientation, little brother. Fumihiro's known for years that Keisuke's bisexual, Fujiwara. Everyone with the Red Suns team knows about Keisuke's orientation. When Mogi showed up, Keisuke's actions gave Fumihiro too much information to ignore. Of course he's demanding answers from Keisuke now."
"Nani? All the Red Suns know Keisuke's bi? Naze didn't someone tell me?"
Ryosuke furrowed his brows as he looked at his genius level downhill prodigy. "Being bisexual forced Keisuke's descent into hard core gangster status. I thought he would've told you about that before now, Fujiwara."
Fujiwara's expression turned sulky. "We've talked about it, Ryosuke-san."
"How could you fail to understand Keisuke's orientation has been public knowledge in Akagi area for several years? His middle school classmates talked about it throughout his school career. When Keisuke became a vicious fighter, people got quieter out of fear of being hurt. One hundred, or more people went to the same schools with him over several years, Fujiwara. It's hard not to become well known for being bisexual with that many people discussing things they had no right to talk about."
Fujiwara shivered, and tilted his head to watch Keisuke's reaction. Ryosuke wondered about the quiet racer's thoughts. Whatever he thought was unpleasant for him.
Keisuke spoke. "Fumihiro's really pissed at you now. You didn't tell him about your theories about my attitude problem before the accident, Aniki. I apologized for being such an asshole by the way. They know I saved Takumi because I love him. Explaining that I was fighting with my feelings helped them understand the situation. Because I've never crossed the line, they thought my orientation was a very bad joke. Fumihiro even said he thought I'd outgrown being bi. Matsimoto needs a couple of days to wrap his head around things. He was speechless through most of the conversation."
"Nobody ever thought you would cross the line, including me, little brother. The fact that you have is still a bit unsettling some days."
Keisuke chuckled as he gave his lover a saucy wink. Fujiwara blushed and frowned a warning. "Minasan freaked when I said I can't walk away from you. You should have seen their faces when I said I'd cross the line for you any day. Since they were worried, I told them you know about my feelings. They may ask how you feel about everything when you see them. I mentioned Oyaji-san's melt down too."
"Did you have to bring up Oyaji's opposition?" Fujiwara jerked away from his boyfriend's side, glaring for all he was worth. Ryosuke had no doubts Fujiwara would have plenty to say the moment he left the room.
Ryosuke thought it wise to intervene on Keisuke's behalf. "Fumihiro and Hiroshi have been here several times, Fujiwara. They know the hachi roku's in our lot. You obviously can't drive. Your car is suspicious. I'd say acknowledging your Otosān's reaction was mandatory with so many telling details in plain sight."
"Aniki's right. I told them you refused to turn on me when Oyaji-san demanded you dump me. They know you were disowned because Oyaji-san's a die-hard homophobic, not because of some ulterior motive to catch my attention. I also mentioned that you had to be monitored because of the new techniques used to save your leg."
Fujiwara vented an irritated huff. He frowned at his knees as he listened to Keisuke's answer. Ryosuke thought he looked embarrassed as much as he looked annoyed. "They'll realize the truth even if Fujiwara's still against going public with your relationship. There's little possibility of you hiding your status now, Keisuke, Fujiwara. It's time you realize that."
"Takumi agreed to give me a chance because I'm important to him is the only thing I've told them. If Takumi wants them to know more, then we can tell them the rest when he's ready. So long as Takumi's not stressed out, that's all I care about."
Fujiwara's voice echoed his obvious worry. "But, Keisuke, won't they think I'm using you? They'll hate me unless we tell them we were together before Mogi shot you. They probably think I'm with you because Oyaji kicked me out instead of because of how I feel about you personally."
"Calm down, Takumi. You're worried for no reason. I said the shooting made you realize how important I am to you. That's all I thought they needed to know. They know you're determined to get back to working as fast as you can. Kenta even volunteered to keep an eye open for positions when you get the brace off." Keisuke tried to soothe his lover's nerves through his soft tone.
"Nani? They know I lost my jobs too?" Fujiwara's razor edged words sliced hard into Keisuke's hide.
Ryosuke pitched his voice to convey his own annoyance with Keisuke's poor choice to divulge that information. Fujiwara was right to be concerned about the rest of the team's reaction. "It seems you're about to get handed your head on a platter, little brother. No wonder Fumihiro and the others are worried about Fujiwara. They must think he's in worse shape than he is. Considering how much they respect Fujiwara, telling them about Fujiwara's lost employment might get you into trouble. They know you, and how your mind works, Keisuke. If they think you'll hurt Fujiwara, they'll gang up on you before you can do anything."
Obviously, Keisuke understood. His brows plunged to the bridge of his nose. "Che. I'm not stupid, Aniki. Matsimoto said this situation is too troublesome for Takumi to handle alone, and he's right. He also told me to take good care of Takumi and not do anything manipulative to him. In short, I was warned to behave and be straight up with Takumi."
Ryosuke felt his brows leap toward his hairline. "He told you to take care of Fujiwara?"
Keisuke nodded and turned to Fujiwara. "Minasan said to tell you that they want to help you in any possible way you will let them. They're upset that you haven't trusted them enough to rely on them when you really needed the help too. Because you hate letting others know your troubles, they think you don't consider them friends, Takumi."
Fujiwara began to pluck the fabric covering his knees. "I didn't know Fumihiro or Matsimoto wanted to be around me outside of expeditions. I've talked to Kenta twice because he realized we were together. He asked some direct questions, so I answered him honestly. I always knew Kenta wants to hang out with you though, Keisuke. He looks up to you a lot so trys to spend time around you because you're like an onīsan to him."
Ryosuke made Fujiwara jump as he barked at him. "Fujiwara, you need to stop assuming you know people's feelings toward you. You believe things that aren't true because of your childhood. Stop shutting people out and you'll discover that most people like you for yourself. I'm sure Kenta decided he want to be your friend because he respects you."
Keisuke backed him up with an equally severe tone. "Aniki's right, Takumi. You often think you're a bother when you aren't. Minasan said the same thing tonight. They're all your friends, not just mine or Aniki's. Their feelings are hurt because you didn't let them help you when you had a need of their help and support to get through tough times."
Fujiwara's slow spoken thought conveyed shock. "I didn't know they felt that way. We don't hang out. So, naze would I think they wanted to be my friends? I'll straighten things out now that I know they feel this way."
Ryosuke sighed and tried to shift Fujiwara's perspective. "There's something else you should consider, Fujiwara. Keisuke suffered a lot when he was younger so became vicious to survive. You've accelerated Keisuke's changes from being an angry street thug. I've caught myself thinking he's becoming more peaceful. Hiroshi mentioned Keisuke's more relaxed the last time I saw him also. Although he knows nothing about your relationship, Hiroshi's observation is proof that you're good for Keisuke."
Keisuke snorted and frowned as he gave him a sideways glance. It seemed his younger brother had caught onto the ploy. "Kenta said he's noticed I'm getting rid of my rougher edges too. He said he's glad I found someone worth changing for. It was a huge shock hearing Kenta say that. Makes me wonder if I'm getting too soft though."
Ryosuke chuckled at Fujiwara's owlish look. Obviously Fujiwara had no idea of how much influence he had on Keisuke. "As temperamental as you were during our expeditions, I'm not surprised Kenta said that. Following with a list of your improvements gave Fumihiro and Matsimoto reasons to consider your romantic interest in Fujiwara in a positive light. It seems you have a very strong supporter in Kenta. Once fumihiro and Matsimoto consider the input in your changed behavior, they will no doubt be quite pleased your in love with Fujiwara too. That gives you additional supporters who will be grateful to Fujiwara too."
"That's true, Aniki. Minasan said they were on our side already tonight."
"Well, I better get back to my toxicology paper. Good night."
"Good night, Ryosuke-san." Fujiwara called out as Ryosuke headed toward the door, still looking like he felt a touch shell shocked.
"Hey, Aniki?" Keisuke made him turn back to face them. "Go to bed. You're exhausted. Your paper can wait for one night."
Ryosuke smiled and nodded at his younger brother's hard toned reprimand. He left the room, sliding the door closed behind him with a smile on his lips.
