Chapter 25: Retribution"Megumi-kun? It's really you! You have finally come back to me!" Takada Kanryu said, his voice mirroring his delight at seeing her.
Megumi watched as the man raised himself from his sitting position and walked towards her. His arms were outstretched as though to welcome her but when he saw the way Megumi stepped back from him, he stopped. Different emotions chased each other across his features. Surprise. Delight. And finally, realization. When he spoke to her again, there was a tinge of regret in his voice. "Why did you run away from me, Megumi-kun? If you hadn't, none of this would have happened," he said as he stepped closer.
Megumi narrowed her eyes at him but didn't say anything. She flinched involuntarily when Takada lifted one raven strand of her hair. Her reaction provoked him to anger and he suddenly grabbed her then, tugging hard on her hair. Megumi cried, feeling sharp darts of pain shoot on her scalp.
Takada hissed into her ear. "Do I disgust you that much, Megumi-kun? Is that why you left?"
"I left because I realized the evil there is in opium!" Megumi said to him, finally allowing her temper to flare up. She had been holding her guilt back for too long now. And now that she was facing the man who was responsible for it all, she felt hatred flow out of her in rich torrents. Wanting to insult him, she added vehemently, "And yes! Your pathetic attempts at seduction disgust me! You disgust me!"
SLAP!
Megumi felt the sharp imprint of his hand on her soft cheek but this time, she did not cry out from the pain. Instead, she gritted her teeth and glared at him.
"How dare you!" Takada screamed. "How...dare...you!"
Megumi continued, "You told me before that opium makes people happy...that it eases away their pain. Well, I say, it robs men of their dreams until there's nothing left to face them but d---"
SLAP!
"Shut your mouth!"
"Takada-san."
Megumi felt rather saw her attacker stop. Her eyes were tightly closed but the authority in that voice was unmistakable. She looked towards the doorway to see the tall figure of Shinomori Aoshi standing there.
Takada lowered his hand and stared hatefully at the silent Onimabashu leader. He said, "Why do you interrupt, Aoshi-sama? I am in the middle of chastising the wench for betraying our syndicate."
"Our syndicate?" Aoshi stepped in and Takada took an unconscious step back. The Oniwabanshuu leader had that effect around people. It seemed as though his every move was measured and his tall frame hinted at suppressed violence. "You forget yourself, Takada-san," Aoshi spoke again, his voice quiet. "You are no longer a member of the Onimabashu."
"B-but you promised!"
"I promised I would bring you the woman and now she is here. But you have been disgraced from the syndicate and you no longer have the privilege to impose your presence here." After saying this, Aoshi raised his hand. Suddenly, the demon ninja materialized behind him. "See him out," he ordered.
"No! You can't do this to me! I am Takada Kanryu! Take your hands off me!" It was as though Takada's voice fell on deaf ears as Hanya dragged him bodily from the room.
With Takada gone, the silence in the room grew defeaning. Megumi continued to stand where she was. And though her face and her body emanated only cool composure, her wide amber eyes betrayed her. There was fear in their depths and Aoshi saw it.
