Five days after the party, Aster and Akari were waiting outside the elementary school for ChibiUsa when they heard a shrill scream. They both got out of the car and hurried in the direction of the scream. Before they could go more than a few steps, Akari doubled over in pain.
“Call the others,” she gasped. “There is one now!” She stumbled towards some shrubbery next to a nearby wall.
Frightened now, Aster quickened her pace to a run, reaching for her medallion at the same time.
“This is Sol,” she said. “The elementary school, now.”
She ducked behind some more shrubbery and pulled out her henshin wand. A low rumble told her that Sailor Terra was about to appear, so she triggered her own transformation.
“Solar Cosmic Power, Transform!”
As soon as the transformation was over, she gathered her legs under her and leapt to the roof of the two-story school. Terra was already there, assessing the situation.
The school was built around a central playground, and a daimohn had appeared in the central area. The children had scattered at its appearance, but a few luckless individuals were trapped in a corner.
The creature was reaching for one of them when a shadow rose from behind one of the cowering children, gathered them into its arms, and sank back into the ground.
At one side, Charon rose out of the recently arrived Kishi Sol’s shadow and released the children he had rescued.
“There are no innocents in the way, Sol,” he said. “The monster may be dispatched without any risk to civilians.”
Kishi Sol nodded and reached up to his own medallion.
“All clear, ladies,” he said. “We’ll keep that thing distracted while you take it down.”
“Right,” Sailor Moon’s voice rang in every fighter’s ear. “Let’s go.”
All of the planetary Kishi dropped down into the playground, with their planet partners right behind them. The only lone Kishi was Kishi Pluto.
The daimohn whipped around in response to the appearance of a new threat. One of its upstanding wings clipped Kishi and Sailor Moon, knocking them into a wall and momentarily stunning them. The daimohn advanced on the lunar pair, intent on them replacing its missed target.
Abruptly, it slowed considerably, as if someone had turned a film down to less than half speed.
“Stop wasting time!” Sailor Pluto’s voice startled everyone as she dropped down from the roof to land next to her planet partner. “I can’t hold it forever!”
Sailor Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Terra, and Sol all attacked it at once, as Tuxedo Kamen moved around the creature to get Sailor Moon and her partner out of harm’s way.
The creature rocked with the force of the planet power thrown at it, and then it abruptly broke free of Sailor Pluto’s time slowing and charged the three warriors in front of it.
A wall of silver light appeared in front of the daimohn, holding it off. On the ground in front of Usagi, an arm-length rod of almost luminous silver appeared, topped by a crescent moon. Without hesitation, Tuxedo Kamen reached for the scepter, and put it into Sailor Moon’s hands as she shook herself back to full awareness.
She looked up at him in awe as his tuxedo melted away and the armor of Prince Endymion took its place. He looked down in wonder as the armor itself changed, the cross-quartered circle of Earth appearing in dark gray the center of the breastplate, and on his cape.
He helped Sailor Moon to her feet, and then stepped aside as the shield faded, leaving them facing a very aggravated daimohn.
She looked up at the looming monster, and then down at the scepter in her hand. She held the scepter at arm’s length and passed it in front of her in a circular motion, vertical to the ground, as if she were inscribing a shield between her and the creature. When she reached the end of the circle, she leveled the scepter at the monster.
“Moon Laser Arrow Strike!”
A brilliant beam of whitesilver light shot out from the crescent moon on the scepter and hit the daimohn directly in the center of its body. It let out a piercing shriek and disappeared in a flash of light, leaving only a darkened spot on the ground where it had stood.
Several Senshi looked at one another in the aftermath of the strike.
“Did you see … “ Neptune began.
“What I think I saw … “ said Mars.
“I saw a person … “Jupiter chimed in.
“At least the shadow of one … “ Venus added.
“Let’s see what Mercury has to say,” Sol said, turning to the blue-clad Senshi, who was busy with her palm computer and her visor.
“There was definitely something there,” Mercury said, her fingers dancing across the miniature keys. “I have an afterimage, but I can’t refine it.”
“Can you get it onto one of the computers at home?” Sol asked. “We might be able to sharpen it then.”
“We can try,” Mercury said. “I can’t do anything more here.”
“Then let’s go,” Sailor Moon said.
The others turned to look at her, and stared in awe at their transformed princess. The white parts of her fuku had taken on a silvery glow, making her dazzling to look on, even for Sailor Sol.
She nodded to the others, and then leaped up to the roof of the school. She paused for a moment, and then disappeared off of the roof, jumping over to the next closest building, heading back to where she had been.

At the house sometime later, Aster relaxed against Michiru’s legs while the other woman brushed her hair. She watched the girls and ChibiUsa do their homework in the annex while Akari, Vincent, and Robert made dinner. She could hear Haruka and Eduard talking about a new design of racing car engine that used a special fuel mix of diesel and methanol.
Luna, Artemis, and Diana were talking amongst themselves, having received a report about the battle. Finally, Luna and Artemis walked over to Aster and Luna put a front paw on her knee to get her attention.
“We think we know what happened,” she said. “We believe that the item that appeared today was something that is only known to us in legends. As far as we know, the Silver Moon Scepter has never appeared. Diana tells us that Neo Queen Serenity possessed the Silver Scepter in the past. She will not tell us what the Queen possesses at their time.”
“The Silver Scepter is supposed to have extraordinary powers,” Artemis said. “It’s nearly the ultimate focus for the Ginzuishou’s power. According to legend, the only thing more powerful is the Ginzuishou Scepter.”
“It seems that the Silver Scepter is not merely a legend,” Aster said. “Considering the effect it had on the daimohn, I would say that its powers are quite extraordinary. Thank you for the information, such as it is. Does legend tell us what the powers of the Silver Scepter are?”
“It is supposed to be able to disassemble magic,” Artemis said. “That could include magical constructs, I suppose. That might indicate why it had the effect it did.”
“It’s also rumored to turn magic back on the caster,” Luna continued. “If we still had the library on Chiron, we would have more information. They had all of the legends and records stored there.”
“All that information,” Aster said, shaking her head sadly. “Lost for over ten thousand years.” The cats walked away, and she looked around the room, making certain that all was well.
Ami was busy with a laptop, trying to sharpen the image that she had collected at the battle. Nathan, Quentin, and Thomas had their laptops out, completing their homework assignments for their college classes.
The quietude was disturbed by a muffled exclamation from Thomas, followed by a round of furious typing. Finally, he got to his feet and walked over to where Aster was.
“I think I found a pattern in the daimohn attacks,” he said. “I think they’re based on astronomical activity.”
Aster opened her eyes and looked directly at the silver-haired man.
“Go ahead, Thomas,” she said. She heard Haruka get up and walk over to where they were, and she heard the girls come out of the annex to hear what he had to say.
“The first attack,” he said. “The night of that University benefit, Pluto had just ended retrograde.”
“Okay,” Aster said. “Go ahead.”
“The second attack was nineteen days later,” he replied. “Uranus was starting retrograde.”
“This sounds promising,” Aster told him. “Continue.”
“The third attack was at the elementary school,” he went on. “It’s been another nineteen days, and Mercury just ended retrograde.”
“It could also that they’re happening every nineteen days,” Michiru pointed out. “Either way, it’s a pattern. We’ll know in nineteen days which it is. When is the next notable planetary activity?”
“Venus begins retrograde in fourteen days,” Thomas said.
“Then we’ll know in fourteen days,” Aster said. “Good work, Thomas. I told you that your studies were important to us. How’s the search for spiritual enlightenment, anyway?”
“I spoke to the man who’s keeping the shrine for Rei’s grandfather,” Thomas said. “He knows a religious scholar who is well versed in both European and Asian philosophies, and he is going to be at the shrine the day after tomorrow. I’m going up there, to talk to him. I’ll tell him my dilemma, without revealing the source of it. Also, apparently he’s found a way to reconcile Christian theology with belief in reincarnation. He’s written a book about his studies. It’s called ‘Many Paths’.”
“Ah,” Rei said. “Ojii-san says something like that all the time. ‘There are many paths up the mountain, but it is all the same mountain. It is not the path you take that matters, but the journey itself and the arrival at the peak.’”
“Speaking of which,” Aster said. “How is he?”
“He’s still recuperating,” Rei said. “He’s at a temple in the mountains that also has a therapeutic spa attached to it. He’s going to stay there until he’s back in shape.”
“Well, the women of Tokyo can breathe easier for a while,” Aster said, smiling. “They won’t have to worry about being propositioned by a man short enough to look up their skirts.”
“Okay,” Aster said. “Thomas, put together a list of the dates when planets begin and end retrograde. If you’re right, we’ll know in two weeks. If nothing happens, we’ll expect an attack five days after that. One way or another, we seem to have discovered something of a pattern.”
Thomas went back to his laptop, pleased that he had managed to contribute something other than his, to him, paltry powers.
“Aster,” Minako said. “Did you really feel stronger, after you and your partner … “
“Hai, Mina-chan,” Aster said. “I meant what I said. I felt stronger, and we saw how different Kishi Sol’s attacks were.”
“Okay,” Minako said. She turned and walked away, beckoning the other girls to follow her.
“What was that about?” Michiru asked.
“I have an idea,” Haruka said. “I think that she’s going to talk the other Inners into trying it out. If they’re successful, then they’ll probably come after us, next.”
“We could beat them to the punch,” Michiru said, looking over at Haruka. “Aster, does the Planet Call demand intercourse, or just intimacy?”
“I don’t know,” Aster said. “It manifested that way for Vincent and I, but it might be different for you, since you normally have no interest in men, except for Mamoru.”
“He’s a special case,” Michiru said. “It’s like you and Vincent. Everyone is attracted to you, if only because of planetary physics. Everyone is attracted to Mamoru and Usagi, because of who they are. She’s the head of the civil government, and Earth is where we all originally came from.”
“I wonder how we got to the other planets,” Aster mused, laying her head back into Michiru’s lap. “I wonder how we got the planet powers.”
“There’s no way to know,” Michiru said. “The archives were all on Chiron, and it’s an ice ball, now. Maybe in the future, we’ll find out our history again, but not right now.”
All three of them looked up when a shadow fell across Aster.
“Hey, Wind Dancer,” Nathan said. “Oi’d loik t’ talk t’ ya.”
“Okay, Arashi,” Haruka said. “Let’s go out to the conference room.”
“Oi didn’t know we ‘ad a confr’nce room,” he said, following her.
“It’s what Aster and the girls call the solarium,” Haruka said, heading towards it. “You can have a private conversation, even when it’s filled with people.”
They disappeared into the solarium, and Michiru looked up at Quentin, who was rocking on his feet nervously.
“I suppose you want to talk to me,” she said.
“Yeah,” he said. “We gotta ‘ave a little confab wif’ our otha halfs.”
Michiru nudged Aster’s head out of her lap, and then moved out from behind her.
“We’ll be back,” she said. “I think I know what they want. This way, Umi’akurei.” She led the way to the solarium, leaving Aster sitting in front of the couch, watching them go.
She was pulled out of her ruminations, literally, when Sean sat down on the couch and drew her up into his lap.
“Yer broodin’ lass,” he said. “What’s the problem?”
“I’m advocating all of the partners connecting,” she said. “I’m painfully aware that there is one pair that can’t do this. They’re condemned to be less than fully powered, because of an accident of birth. What am I supposed to do?”
“There’s connecting with their satellites,” Takagi said, sitting down next to them. “I’ve spoken to Thomas. He’s more powerful than he was when we were in the States. That would give them an advantage.”
“So would connecting to their primaries,” Aster said. “Sean, Michiru just asked me if the Planet Call requires intercourse. That’s an important question, considering the difference in size between you an Hotaru.”
“Lass,” Sean said. “I’m not after molestin’ a fifteen year-old girl.”
“I didn’t say that,” Aster said. “There’s more than one way to be intimate, Sean. I know that you’re not deficient in imagination. You’ll think of something that won’t hurt her, and that will satisfy the requirements of the Planet Call.”
She got up and headed towards the kitchen.
“I have other business, tonight,” she said. “I’ll see you boys in the morning.”

Sailor Sol woke in the morning, with her arms wrapped around Sailor Terra. Kishi Sol lay on the other side of the Senshi of Earth. Her sister had been difficult to convince, especially without knowing how it would affect Endymion, but she had finally given in.
Before the three of them had gone to Akari and Vincent’s room, they had seen Usagi and Mamoru talking to Thomas. He had looked skeptical, but he had nodded before Usagi was finished.
Across her adopted sister’s sleeping form, Sol saw her partner’s eyes open. She smiled at him, and then carefully extricated herself from the sleeping Senshi and slid out of the bed.
She looked at her discarded fuku, gloves and boots as she removed her tiara, and watched with amazement as they disappeared. The tiara in her hand disappeared and her clothing from the night before materialized on her body. Her henshin wand was already in her pocket.
Aster padded out of the room, closing the shoji door behind her. She made her way downstairs, wondering how the others had fared. She found the coffee already started in one machine, and hot water working in another one. Aster put rice on to steam, pulled out eggs, cut up meat, bacon and sausage.
She was starting to mix pancakes when she heard footsteps and ChibiUsa came in, already dressed for the day.

Two hours later, everyone had eaten, gone outside and transformed, and then reported on the change in their transformation. All of them had noticed a boost in power, even Endymion.
“Well, that worked out well,” Aster said. “Now, I want to talk privately with Uranus, Neptune, and Saturn. I want to know how they worked out a compromise, if they did.”
“We did,” Haruka said, flushing scarlet. On one side of her, Nathan turned a similar color, while Michiru and Quentin both giggled.
Aster turned her eyes to Sean and Hotaru. The girl looked down at her lap and blushed, while Sean simply gazed at her, expressionless.
“Ye told me to think of somethin’,” he said. “Ye shouldna be askin’ questions ye don’ want th’ answer to.”
“You’re forgetting something, love,” Aster said, smiling. “We’re bonded. All you had to do was think about it.” She looked in Takagi’s direction and then started laughing. Takagi was sitting with Washino and Chimei, and all three of them were bright red with embarrassment.
“I guess you gentlemen found his activities inspirational, ne?” she asked. “I would also wager that Saturn’s ingenuity helped Uranus and Neptune along, as well.”
“Oive nevah thought about a Sheila loik that in me loif,” Quentin said. “Oiah nevah met a Sheila that got a roise outta me, until her.” He gestured to Michiru, who blushed and giggled again.
“Well,” Aster said. “This should make it easier to defeat those creatures. Any news on the image?”
“It is very strange,” Ami said. “I would like to get some other pictures at the next attack. We should try film and digital. You never know what you might turn up.”
“I have a thought,” Thomas said hesitantly. He blushed and leaned against Usagi as everyone turned to look at him.
“In astronomy,” he said. “Sometimes they use special film. One kind shows ultraviolet light. Another kind shows infrared light. Why don’t we try some of that?”
“We can get the satellites to help,” Aster said. “I’ll talk to them on Saturday night. They’ll be glad to be able to help. They’re frustrated with their inactivity.”
“That sounds like a good idea,” Usagi said. “So many people carry cameras and take pictures of anything interesting. No one is going to know if they’re using special film.”
“I’ll get the cameras and have everything set up quickly,” Aster said. “If Thomas is right, we have thirteen days. If he’s wrong, we may have eighteen.”

When late afternoon came, Aster went out to the solarium to share the sunset with her partner. The two of them sat down on chaise lounges facing the setting sun. Without conscious volition, they reached out to one another and clasped hands as the sun slipped behind the buildings.
A soft step behind them made Aster turn and look.
“I thought I would join you,” he said quietly. He pulled a chair over between the two chaises and sat down.
With a smile, Aster released Vincent’s hand and put her hand on Thomas’ knee. Thomas jumped a bit, but then he put his own hand over hers. The three of them sat still, watching the colors of the sky darken until the stars were clearly visible in the sky.
Vincent was the first one to move. He looked over at the two of them, and then rose off of the chaise.
“Ah’m goin’ inside,” he said. “Ah’ll see ya in th’ mornin’.”
Aster watched him go, and then turned to smile at Thomas.
“What’s on your mind, Tsuki?” she asked, reminding him of his past life.
“I wanted you to know that I’ve finished changing my major,” he said. “The University thought I was insane, but they didn’t argue with me. They gave me the information on the changes in my tuition and what books I’d need.”
“We’ll go to the University tomorrow,” Aster promised. “We’ll take Nathan and Quentin, as well, and get their funding taken care of.”
“I shouldn’t feel comforted by this,” Thomas said. “I was taught to never question God’s rules or his design. My father said studying religion and philosophy was like saying that God was wrong.”
“Your past life tells you differently,” Aster said. “Someone I know here once said that King James did not descent from Mount Sinai with the Bible written in stone.”
“Who was that?” Thomas asked, intrigued in spite of himself.
“Ojii Hino,” Aster said. “Rei’s grandfather has had the opportunity to meet men of religion and philosophy from all over the world. He has used those opportunities to expand his own understanding of the divine.”
“I don’t know what my father would say,“ Thomas said.
“Tell your father that you’re a big boy,” Aster said. “If he has any doubts, you can give him Akari, Usagi, and Mamoru as lack of character witnesses.” She smiled to show it was a joke, and was relieved to see him smile shyly in return.
“Thank you, warleader,” he said, rising to his feet. To Aster’s absolute surprise, he bent down and kissed her, chastely but passionately, before turning to walk back into the house.
