Words you may not know
*Misoshiru – Miso soup
*Miso – Bean paste
Not feeling her best, Mitsu finished dressing and made her way downstairs to tend shop. Horie and Cho were still out retrieving the new load of goods from the docks. Since this incoming shipment was the first of many, Horie was there to oversee the arrival and transport of the goods, for many more will follow.
Mitsu sat the teapot at the fire in the back room and eased herself in her chair to take in the morning light that filtered into the room through the noren. Last night was the first night in a long time she actually enjoyed herself. Mitsu was ecstatic that Mochi Hana and Serizawa joined the team. Although her head was still fogged from the many cheery toasts Mochi Hana had everyone make, Mitsu wore a smile as she thought back on it.
A tall gentleman entered the storefront through the noren, which pulled her away from her thoughts. The bright daylight burst through the noren when the person entered which caused Mitsu to squint and shade her eyes. Able only to see the man’s silhouette due to the background glare, Mitsu stood from her seat to get a better look.
“May I help you?”
“Ahhh, it looks like my timing is at its best today,” Saitou’s voice gave identity to his towering silhouette. “It is indeed a pleasure to be greeted by you once again, Mitsu-san.”
“My, my, Mr. Fujita, aren’t you a cheerful one today?” She moved the hand that shaded her eyes to her mouth and giggled. “It has been some time since I’ve seen your strong, handsome self here!
Mitsu enjoyed looking at the handsome man who, to her, seemed to be the same height as Horie, but a bit more solidly built.
“It looks like everyone’s left you alone this morning,” Saitou investigated. “Being alone with all the robberies going on involving merchants around the area is not wise. I’m surprised that, as much as your man assumes possession of you, he’d leave you unattended without a good reason behind it.”
Mitsu moved slowly toward Saitou to step out of the beam of sunlight still peeking through the noren’s divider.
“Hisomu-san is not a careless man. He has men posted around the building and if there be any sign of trouble, they’d be here in no time at all. I t is just that…” She paused, looked around and lowered her voice to continue, “…There is a shipment being delivered today, so all the men are at post and not here in the store at the moment.”
“I see.” Saitou smiled benefiting from the sight of the beautiful woman.
From his perspective, Mitsu appeared tiny and fragile, yet well rounded and perfectly proportion. Once again, Saitou was taken in by her seemingly flawless beauty, but realized that if he allowed his stare to go on for much longer, he would find himself at the doorway that led him into temptation’s realm.
Saitou quickly dislodged his gaze, turned, and walk toward the back of the storefront to look at the display as a diversion. Half-a-step into his short trip across the room, Mitsu seized Saitou’s arm to stop him. Saitou felt her body against his own, but there was something far beyond the familiar lust in her touch. Saitou sensed desperation that kept him from taking another step.
“Please…” Mitsu’s voiced her plea, “…Please listen to me Mr. Fujita. I don’t know who else to turn to, but there is something that is not right.” Her voice began to tremble. “I need to talk to you about it.”
“Oh?” Saitou raised eyebrow and looked directly into her beseeching eyes that were set perfectly on her face. This time her plea for his attention to a specific matter enabled him to overcome his previous fleshly test. “Why don’t you fill me in?”
“I cannot explain everything to you right now, besides, you are probably being watched right now by one or more of our men. I can slip away later this evening while everyone is busy with transporting the other half of the load,” Mitsu suggested.
“That wouldn’t be a problem for me. When and where do you suggest we meet that will not cause Horie suspicion?”
“There is a small *misoshiru shop next to the Kiku Bridge. Hisomu will be busy with the other transport and is expecting me to have my meal at that time. I will wait for your arrival there and we can talk.”
Mitsu smiled with a sigh of relief that Saitou was agreeing to meet with her. Perhaps she will find some peace of mind, or could it be that Mitsu was after more from Saitou than just his shoulder?
“I think it is a good idea, even if one of Horie’s pawns sees us, it would not arouse suspicion if we should run into each other there.” Saitou nodded his head; “I shall meet with you shortly after sundown then.”
“Thank you,” Mitsu bowed, “thank you so much Mr. Fujita.”

“Kenshin, why the long face? It probably has something to do with Aoshi, doesn’t it?” Sano asked making a guess. He hated seeing his friend in any other mood than Kenshin’s usual bubbly self. “It looked like it’s your turn to be going though some heavy thinking time.”
Kenshin breathed in deeply and let out a sigh, “I’m afraid you’re right this time Sano. I believed I had everything between Aoshi and I, all thought out. A part of me is excited to see Aoshi again, but another part of me is hesitant. Perhaps, it is because I don’t want to have to discuss the matter between he and I.”
“I don’t envy your position, buddy,” Sano said, wishing there was a way to comfort his old pal.
Then Sano recalled Kenshin's invitation to get something to eat when Sano was down in the dumps when he was trying to figure out what to do regarding Saitou. That helped a whole lot!
“Hey, why don’t we go get something to eat, I’m hungry,” Sano suggested hoping that Kenshin would agree.
“I appreciate the suggestion Sano, but I promised Miss Kaoru I would get this alcove finished for her today. She’s looking forward to adding flowers and the incense bowl, so she went to town to purchase the items.” Kenshin smiled, “I would hate to disappoint her.”
“I just can’t keep resting anymore. The fact that I can’t do much of anything is starting to bug the shit out of me. Maybe I’ll take a walk and see what’s up with Katsu downtown. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen the guy.”
Kenshin had a hunch that Sano was hoping to bump into Saitou, since Saitou had already been to the dojo earlier and left. It was unlikely that Saitou would be stopping by again anytime today.
“That sounds like a good idea. You do need the exercise, but don’t over do it, Sano.”
“Nah…” Sano said as he waved his arm in front of himself in a downward sweeping motion. “…I don’t think I could ever be guilty for over-doing anything beside over-eating, or drinking.
Sano left Kenshin to finish the alcove for Kaoru, knowing that Kenshin had a lot of things on his mind, and in his heart, to sort out.
“I guess it’s just me and me today,” Sano mumbled to himself as he walked out the dojo’s compound and slid the gate shut behind him. “It had been way too long since I looked Katsu up.”
Sano leisurely enjoyed his walk on the roadway to town. His thoughts took him back to when he used to live inside of that tiny apartment he called home. It was a one-room hole in the wall, where the roof leaked when it rained, and the floor smelled of mildew. Yes, Sano’s very glad to be at the dojo, and even happier that his life was going along in the right direction. Especially with absence of gambling and fighting, Sano was finally able to focus on other things around him, and was also beginning to recognize his own true potential.
He raised his well-defined arms above his head and attempted to stretch out his back, followed by his left side, and then, his right side. He detested being handicapped, even if it did give him an excuse to be lazy. By nature, Sano was far from being the lazy-type. He devoted time to staying fit. His strong physique coupled with his pleasing facial features had him marked as a remarkably attractive young man who often turned women, as well as men’s heads in passing. He would have to be nothing short of outstanding to have caught the eye of Saitou.
“Hmm,” Sano hummed out loud as he moved out of the way of a rushing jinrikisha. His thoughts turn to the Saitou. “Shit, I miss that wolf,” he sighed as he continued on his short journey into town. “I sure as hell wonder why Saitou had decided to carry on with our relationship. I would never have thought the wolf would be the kind of guy to carry on an intimate relationship with a person of the same sex.”
Sano picked up a pebble from the roadside and tossed it into the field. “But shit, look at me! I’m the ultimate last person I’d imagine getting caught up in a same-sex relationship.”
But, oh so wonderful the relationship was turning out for the both of them. The genuine feelings they had for one another made their love for each other extend into realms both men had never traveled on before. A lot of things, senses and emotions were new and refreshing. For Sano, It felt so right.
But then, doubt always made an appearance when love was not constantly affirmed. Sano was also bombarded with negative thoughts.
Does Saitou really love me? What if this is just a curiosity thing for the wolf and he gets tired of me when our relationship gets old? Sano gave room to even more doubting thoughts. What if Saitou is killing time until his wife comes back to him?
Sano felt threatened, and he verbalized his insecurity, as well. “Shit, or worse yet… what if Saitou falls for a woman?! How the hell would I compete with that?”
Lucky for Sano, he found himself approaching his destination. He switched his thoughts over to the many distractions of the big town, which ceased its doubtful haunting, at least for the time being.
It was already after the high-sun’s hour, and Sano’s gut was carrying on its own conversation with itself, full of complaints, and murmurs of hunger. As he entered the busy town, his nose picked up every delicious aroma that wafts past him, for food vendors cooked and displayed their tantalizing goods in hopes to lure hungry customers.
Sano tried to hold his hunger pangs back from giving into his temptation to settle for the first food vendor. Sticking to his plan, Sano scraped up enough will power needed to ignore the beckoning call of gluttony, and he barely managed to avoid the delicious temptations.
“Damn it, hang in there! I hear you and I’ll feed you as soon as I get Katsu,” Sano spoke, in an attempt to console his rumbling gut. “Almost there…”
At long last, Sano stepped up to Katsu’s door and knocked a few raps out on the thin wooden door.
“Hey bud, are you in there? It’s me, Sano.”
A response came quickly, more like immediately.
“Sano! Where the hell have YOU been?”
“I been kind of busy with working out at the Kamiya Dojo.” Then Sano raised his hand and placed it on his rib to point at the injured area. “Some fucken asshole decided to shoot me after I tried to stop him from escaping a robbery.”
“Oh yeah?” Katsu said placed his hands on his hips. “Why am I not surprised to hear that, coming from you?”
“Well I didn’t come here to discuss battle wounds, but I'm here to see if you want to get a bite to eat, and maybe get some sake with it.”
“Sounds good to me, but let’s make it a quick snack, I need to get some sketches done,” Katsu said as an idea enters his mind. “Hey, since all you can do is lay around with your bum side, why don’t you pose for my sketches again?”
“Do I have to take my clothes off again?” Sano asked ready to decline if the answer was yes.
Katsu chuckled, “No Sano, I need to do your nose this time. Lesson for tomorrow’s class will be the angles of noses.”
“Sure, I guess I can pose for that as long as we get something to eat first before my nose is just a piece of bone,” Sano said on his way out the door ahead of Katsu.

“What’s wrong Kenshin?” Kaoru asked noticing how quiet he was in thought.
“Huh? Oh, nothing’s wrong, Miss Kaoru,” Kenshin said becoming aware that he must have been drifting in thought again for Kaoru to have noticed. “I’m just glad this job is done and now I can get caught up with the other chores around the dojo.”
Kaoru stepped up to Kenshin and threw her arms around his neck accompanied by a big squeeze. She was happy indeed to have Kenshin be so attentive to her. Having him build and complete the alcove to honor her father meant the world to her. She desired to express her gratitude to Kenshin, but lacked the experience of a woman.
Kenshin received Kaoru’s embrace and smiled from ear to ear, for he was glad to see her so happy. Holding her in his arms to return the hug, he squeezed her ever so lightly. His eyelids drop slowly as the images of Tomoe entered his mind as they always do when Kaoru crossed the boundary and triggered Kenshin’s memory to reflect on his first love, Tomoe.
Tomoe entered Kenshin’s crazy hitokiri world when he was titer-tottering between holding onto sanity and turning into an emotionless slaughtering machine. She breathe life into the infamous, ‘hitokiri battousai’ and had given him the motivation to leave his butchering life behind and make up for it by doing what he knew was the right way. It cost Tomoe her life for Kenshin to find his life, and he had never forgotten it.
Was this the reason why Kenshin felt so drawn to Aoshi? Was it because the pain and memory of Tomoe was too intense for Kenshin to bear every time he took Kaoru into his arms? Being reminded of Tomoe when she breathed her last breath in Kenshin’s arms was indeed a dreadful thought to bear, but the images of Tomoe still haunt Kenshin as if it all just happened yesterday.
When Kenshin was with Aoshi there was no haunting, but just the lustful passions that struggle to be released from within him and shared with the man who stood by to receive him. It was a feeling Kenshin was fast losing hope for it to ever happen between he and Kaoru.
Kaoru relaxed her embrace, just enough to attempt to place a kiss upon Kenshin’s lips which startled him and snapped him back to the present.
“Uh, Miss Kaoru!” Kenshin said alarmingly.
Kenshin’s reaction surprised Kaoru and she looked at him in wonder, “Kenshin?”
He hesitated, but realized how his reaction must have seem to Kaoru, Kenshin quickly took Kaoru up into his arms and pulled her close against him. He kissed her lightly on the lips at first, barely brushing his tongue against the inside of her mouth. He took a deep breath and drove his tongue between her teeth pressing his lips against hers.
Kenshin squeezed his eyes shut and tried to overcome the images of Tomoe. His heart began to pound beneath his chest as panic arose from his gut and slammed itself against the back of his throat. Kenshin drifted…and in his mind he saw Tomoe again, in his arms bleeding from HIS sword that pierced her. The steam from her spilled blood misted its way into Kenshin’s nostrils, reminding him of the distinct scent of her blood as it drained her life away on that very cold winter day out in the snow.
Kenshin jerked Kaoru from him and looked into her now puzzled eyes.
“Miss Kaoru, I…” Kenshin’s words temporarily ceased for a moment as he tried to compose his thoughts.
“Ken…shin?” Kaoru slowly called out his name.
Kenshin let out a nervous chuckle, held Kaoru’s shoulders at arms length and said, “I should get back to the chores Miss Kaoru, or I will find myself running out of daylight before I get anything done."

”Cho’s breathing finally slowed down after climbing the stairs six times to carry the smuggled wares. It’s been a long day and Cho was tired and hungry, but still, he had the energy to keep up his appearance for Mitsu.
“That’s some load! It is hard to believe that’s only half of it too!" Cho smiled at Mitsu who was there supervising the storage procession.
“Hai,” she answered, “Hisomu-san mentioned that this is the first of many.”
She returned the smile to the obviously exhausted man.
“OH! That reminds me, purty one. The boss wanted me to tell you that he will be back here with the second load later tonight. He had to sit with the load since it’s just out there due to the fact that we split up the transport, doing half of it at a time.”
Mitsu was relieved to hear that. She wasn’t quite sure how she’d work out her meeting with Saitou, but now with Horie tied up till a later hour tonight, there would be no hindrance for a smooth and quiet exit to her rendezvous.
“Arigatou gosaimasu Cho-san, for delivering Horie’s message to me.”
“You are welcome, purty lady,” Cho said. “I have to get on my way to take the horse team to the livery and swap them for fresh horses for tonight’s delivery. Poor animals earned their keep today and I want to make sure they get a little extra grain as a tip.”
Cho bowed and then took a last look at Mitsu’s striking beauty. He enjoyed looking at her eyes most of all. Of course she stopped Cho’s heart from beating by just her very presence, but her eyes were what captivated Cho above all her assets. Sensuous and inviting they were to him when he was near to her, and haunting when Cho was away from her. How he yearned to take her in his arms and tell her exactly how he felt.

“I need to scratch my nose,” Sano said as he tried to sit as still as possible for Katsu’s sketches.
Katsu looked up from his sketchpad at his fidgeting friend. “You know Sano, you have to be one of my worst models! I never realized how much you like to bitch about things.”
“It’s fucken driving me crazy to just sit and do nothing. I’m hungry as hell right now too.”
“Sano, we ate at the soba vendor, what the hell are you talking about?” Katsu shook his head.
“I’m sitting here watching the time creep by, but you’re over there totally wrapped up looking at my nose! I can see that it’s been at least a couple of hours gone by, if not more.” Sano finally gave in to scratch his nose and blurted out, “Damn it! Katsu, I had enough! If I don’t get the hell out of here I’ll fucken kill myself and put me out of my own misery!”
“Okay, okay, Sano… don’t get your fundoshi tied up in a knot, you’re free! I’m done.”
With that, Sano stood to his feet and bent over and touched his toes to stretch out his back. Sanding erect once again he rolled his head on his shoulders to relieve the kink in his neck from having to hold still for so long.
“I need to be getting paid for this shit, you know that Katsu?” Sano glanced over to the artist who still sat cross legged on the tatami adding the last finishing touches to his sketches of Sano’s nose.
“Hey, I really appreciate this and hopefully can count on your help for more sessions.”
“Yeah, yeah, right…” Sano didn’t think he needed to answer that hint of Katsu’s. Instead, Sano walked over to the door and slipped his feet into his shoes. “I’m off to get me something to eat before I go back to the dojo. Sun’s already at the horizon and I can’t believe I’ve been sitting in that spot for hours! Shit!”
Katsu chuckled, “I’m not hungry, otherwise I’d join you.”
Sano chuckled right along with Katsu, “It’s fine with me, and I think I just about had enough of artsy stuff to last me awhile.”
Sano stepped out of the Katsu’s little, one-room apartment and made his way back to the busy street. He was reminded of the scene where, he used to step out of his own apartment around this time to fetch himself something to eat, as well as try his luck at gambling. He snickered at the thought of his late night desserts when he’d meet up with some lucky little lady to satisfy his other, more primal appetites.
‘Hmmm,” Sano hummed out loud to himself as he was also reminded that he was also beginning to hunger for a little bit more than just food.
Wonder what the old wolf is doing tonight. Maybe I should stop by and see what’s up with the guy before I go to the dojo, Sano thought to himself and entertained even more thoughts about his lover. There were some good thoughts, and then there were some thoughts that were down right disturbing. I wonder why Saitou didn’t invite me over to his place tonight. He can’t be getting tired of me this soon in the game. "Shit!"
“Damn it!” Sano shouted out loud turning heads on the busy roadway.
“I reckon the ‘Rooster-Head’ is crowing early this evening,” the irritating voice with the Kyoto accent blared off at Sano’s left side.
Sano stopped in his tracks. “It can’t fucken be!” Sano turned his head to the side keeping his footing solidly planted.
“You know? I knew I smelled horse shit close by,” Sano said when he saw Cho standing at the entrance of the livery stables.
Cho laughed from his belly. “Yeah, if it weren’t for the shit horses make, where would you Rooster-Heads find the worms to chow on?”
“Fuck you, ‘Broom-Head’. I’m not in the mood for this, so don’t be asking me to shut you up with my fist. It’s not worth my time.”
Cho chuckled again, “Yup, you’re the same ole, sweet, handsome dude I fondly remember. Speaking of ‘time’, I got some to kill. What would you say to the both of us getting a bite to eat? I’ll buy, again.”
Food was the one sure way to get Sano to do things. Especially when Sano’s pockets were usually lacking the sound of the jingling money it took to lavish one’s self with restaurant offerings.
“Let’s head up the road a spell, there is a great place if you like miso,” Cho said as he joined Sano on the road way and pointed in the direction of the Kiku Bridge.
“Yeah, that sounds good enough for me. I heard that place has got more ways to eat miso than I have joints in my body,” Sano wriggled his fingers in front of Cho’s face to illustrate his point.
Cho pushed Sano’s waving hand away from the front of his eyes, so that he could confirm what he had just seen at a distance from them.
“Hey! Look at that purty angel there walking across the street! She’s the sweet lady of my dreams! The very ‘one-and-only,’ that I’m on the verge of giving my entire heart over to.”
Sano frowned, “What the fuck are you going on about this time?”
“There,” Cho pointed at the restaurant’s entrance, “she just walked into the misoshiru restaurant!” Come here, I’ll show you who took the heart right out from my chest.” Cho pulled on Sano’s sleeve and took off running.
Sano shrugged his shoulders and followed close behind in sneak-mode.
The two of them duck in, and out of the vending entries, wove their way though the by-passers on the roadway, until they got to the restaurant where the lady slipped into.
Cho spoke to Sano in a low tone as they wait a bit to make sure she settled in there. “You just have to see her! I know I’m nuts over her, and Saitou warned me not to get involved if I valued my life.”
At the mention of Saitou’s name, Sano perked up and gulped in air. “Huh? What the hell is Saitou’s connection with that woman?”
“Well, it’s too complicated to explain right now, but believe me, I don’t want to cross Saitou. If he finds out I’m stalking this beauty, he’d have my skin as a sheath for his sword, for sure,” Cho trembled at the thought.
Sano, although confused about what Cho was going on about, became even more curious, and entered the restaurant to get a better look at who was causing Cho to be acting even more like a lunatic than usual.
When Sano peaked over a low screen room divider his mouth dropped open and hung there. His eyes bugged out of his head, as if he’d seen a ghost.
Cho, followed Sano’s lead, walked up to the low room diver and peered over it as well. Cho joined Sano and let his jaw fall from the rest of his head in the same expression that Sano was now frozen to. Both men were silenced as they take in the sight at the far corner end of the restaurant.
Mitsu placed her hand upon Saitou’s chest and leaned her head on his shoulder and quietly spoke into Saitou’s ear, “Arigatou gosaimasu, Mr. Fujita. I am so very grateful that you’ve decided to come and hear what I have to say."
Saitou placed his hand over her hand that rested upon his chest, looked into her appreciating eyes, and smiled warmly to reassure her. “Let us order our food first, then I will be able to listen to you uninterrupted.”
Sano and Cho both look at one another with shocked expressions still locked onto their faces, and then look back at the couple in the restaurant. Sano was the first to react, followed by Cho.
“What the fuck?” Sano squeaked out.
Cho echoed Sano sentiment.
