A/N: Anonym-kun, I'm grateful for your explanation review about wrong words. I'll fix the errors that came from the "Japanese in 10 Minutes A Day" book you explained starting here. I'll attempt to figure out which word forms of "what" to use in correct context.
Japanese Glossary corrections: Naze means "what for" / doushite= why. / "minnasan" = everyone /"isha sensei" = Doctor/ "Arigatou" = Thank you./ "Gomennasai onegaishimasu" = sorry / "moushiwake arimasen" = extreme apology "there is no forgiveness for me"/ "Nan ji" = "what time" / "otoko" = men.
CHAPTER 25
Because Ryosuke called for a mandatory meeting, Takumi drove to the Takahashi home after work. He pulled into the familiar parking lot and shut off his car. His teammates had parked their cars near the two-story condominium structures, including Itsuke's hachi go. Startled, Takumi got out of his compact, and headed for the knot of people. He spied Keisuke leaning against a familiar looking dark sedan. His boyfriend had a cigarette in his mouth and that habitual scowl in place. The expression radiated a warmth to which Takumi was drawn. Curbing his disgruntled mental state, Takumi walked up to his lover.
As he drew near, Keisuke asked in a soft voice. "Doushite are you frowning?"
Stopping in front of his teammate Takumi answered. "Itsuke's here. Somehow, this car looks kind of familiar too. What's going on, Keisuke?"
"This sedan looks familiar because it's Tohji's. Takeuchi's hanging out with Kenta this afternoon. Kenta's got a plan to calm his fears about us."
Takumi's heart gave a painful lurch as his eyes landed on his life long friend. Itsuke was standing with Kenta, talking to Matsimoto and Etsuya. Itsuke was nodding his head, absorbed in whatever Matsimoto was saying. Kenta noticed him, and flashed a familiar greeting signal. He bumped Itsuke in the arm, catching his attention. After a few moments, Itsuke also gave him a quick wave, along with Takumi's other teammates. Takumi gave the same gesture in return with a touch of relief. Perhaps Itsuke was making small progress.
Kenta had worked a minor miracle the previous evening. Keisuke told him to have faith in Kenta's ability to change people's minds. Takumi had been skeptical due to Kenta's irrational seeming personality. Seeing the inexplicable results had amazed Takumi. After his break down in the hachi roku over being ignored outright, Itsuke spoke to him twice, complements of whatever Kenta had done. Although the conversation was awkward, they had shared words. Takumi was still uncertain about the outcome, yet felt calmer after their small talk the night before.
"Uhm, is Akimoto with him?" Takumi could not resist the urge to glance around the area in search of the burly fighter.
Keisuke chuckled at his nervous reaction. "He'll be here a little later. Don't worry, he won't dare look at you funny, much less say the wrong thing to you. Akimoto was only trying to help Aniki get us together. He knows I'll kill him if he ever hits on you again. His sleazy little role's not needed."
"Is there a reason for Tohji san being here?"
"Tohji knows about two courses we might be battling on in a couple of weeks. He's been talking to Aniki for a couple days since he saw the tentative schedule. He's here to explain some things before we decide whether we want to compete on these courses."
Takumi nodded, with a quick sideways shift of his head. Another cramp was roiling through his abdomen. A slow deep breath helped to drop his marginal discomfort.
Keisuke shifted to a very soft voice. "So, how did your deliveries, and other job go today? Any problems because of your cramps, my own?"
Sharp cerulean eyes gleamed as he asked the loaded question. For a moment Takumi wondered if he had noticed his response to the mild cramping. The teen's cheeks burned as he faced away from the others. "I'm fine. I think I've worked the kinks out today."
"I'm glad. You looking so embarrassed is too damn sexy. Let's ditch this meeting so I can eat you up again. I have an idea that should keep you from getting cramps whenever you want me to dominate."
A sly look flashed across Keisuke's features, and vanished as fast. Takumi knew Keisuke enjoyed baiting him with obscene words. Each was a verbal caress, yet he still blushed to his toes with each perverted phrase. The teen tried to keep from reacting to the provoking statements, and failed miserably.
He hissed, "Not now, Keisuke. Ryosuke san said this is a mandatory meeting. I can't handle a repeat of last night anyway. Getting control over my body last night was hard, and you know it. You had to talk me back to my senses, remember? Leaving could tell everyone that we're a couple."
The teen had not known what to expect when he asked how he made Keisuke feel the previous night at the love hotel. His feisty lover had revealed his sweet spot to him. Keisuke also taught him what he did for his lover by dominating in their lovemaking. Takumi's body remembered how mild pain had blended with pleasure so acute it had astounded him. He had almost passed out when the extreme orgasm Keisuke had given him overloaded his system. The down side was the residual cramping he was still experiencing.
"Spoil sport. We'll have time after Aniki fills us in on the situation. Let's go to dinner after the meeting. I'll get to spend time with you that way."
"Sure, Keisuke."
Takumi remembered every sensation as he looked into Keisuke's amused eyes. For an instant Takumi's core pulsed as if hollowed out. A twinge of pain and remembered bliss skittered up his spine. Words were inadequate to describe how he had felt as Takumi curled into Keisuke's arms after they had made love. His boyfriend had talked him down from the extreme physical buzz that left him insensible. Takumi now understood why Keisuke enjoyed intercourse, even with the pain factor. Keisuke had rubbed his hips when they had begun to twinge. He had walked most of the mild discomfort out while working that day. However, he still had cramps when he least expected them. The frightening intensity of his own body going completely out of control had also gotten Keisuke hurt. Takumi's grip had left his upper arms with several crescent-shaped welts and bruises.
"How are your arms?" The teenager winced as he asked.
Keisuke wiggled his eyebrows before he settled back into his public scowl. "You gave me a reason to smile every time I see the marks. You made sure everyone knows you've claimed me as yours, which makes me very happy."
Takumi felt mortified heat flash into his face and ears over his smirking boyfriend's soft quip. Leave it to his paramour to say something that embarrassing with a very satisfied tone. Before Takumi found his tongue to answer, Ryosuke's voice called everyone to attention.
"Listen up, minnasan. We have several things to discuss." Takumi slowly turned to face their black-haired leader as Keisuke's presence dominated his awareness. "We have an opportunity to tackle two courses if we do two days worth of battles. However, I need to know if minnasan can get additional time off from work two weeks from now."
Takumi frowned. Where were they going?
"I've been in contact with a pass closer to Tokyo City. It seems that they have two very different courses, and several professional Gaijin drivers compete in the area. We have an opportunity to tackle both courses in consecutive battles. First, I want to know how everyone feels about being around Gaijin."
"Ryosuke san, do they speak our language?"
"Some do according to the emails I've received, Matsimoto. I can translate anything in French. Keisuke's a fluent speaker of English, so we can help unman who isn't proficient in those second languages. Many Gaijin in the area speak our language because foreign Embassies employ them. I understand that we can get help from several natives that are bilingual also. They have acquaintances among the Gaijin drivers."
Shocked, Takumi whirled to stare at Keisuke. His older boyfriend was competent in a language he had never grasped beyond third grade reading? Takumi's tongue refused to cooperate well enough to speak the strangely formed words. He also had difficulty untangling the jabbering he heard to understand the speaker's meaning. Yet, Keisuke had never bothered telling him about being bilingual. Keisuke signaled for him to pay attention to the meeting. Annoyed, Takumi faced forward as his irritation grew.
Kenta asked, "How many days would we need to clear to compete in these battles, Ryosuke san?"
"If we tackle both courses, we'll leave here at two o'clock on Thursday afternoon. We'll train Thursday night on the main pass, and battle the native racers Friday night. Then we'll train on the Gaijin course starting Saturday morning, and battle the Gaijin racers that afternoon, or the following morning. We'll return here after the second race."
"Uhm, Ryosuke san?"
"Hai, Fujiwara?"
"Doushite would we practice during the day when traffic will cause problems?"
Ryosuke began passing out folders as he spoke. "The second course requires driving during daylight hours. It's an old mining road that the company abandoned eleven years ago. Foreign Embassies asked to use it as a training tool for their chauffeurs. The Embassies involved with the purchase have altered the course to insure that it's both difficult, and dangerous. The locals nicknamed the second course Dead Man's Roller Coaster because of the alterations made to it. Most competitors on the second course are either professional drivers, their spouses, or kodomo who like to drive. Also, Gaijin only race during the day to reduce conflicts with several xenophobic natives in the area."
Takumi opened the file Ryosuke handed him and looked at a 3-D mock up tagged Dead Man. He frowned as he tried to picture what it must be like from the deep looking dips, and coiling up or down twists reminiscent of the amusement ride for which they had named it. He shuffled through the pages, and saw several images that were grainy, but impressed upon him that the road deserved its name.
Takumi tried to get a better idea of the conditions they would face. "So, any Gaijin we battle are professional drivers then?"
"That's quite possible, Fujiwara. The majority of the Gaijin street racers are the older kodomo of Embassy employees. Professional chauffeurs who are competent in stunts, and extreme evasion techniques have tutored many of the younger drivers. If nothing else, tackling this second course without concern for the outcomes could be educational. Learning new things about driving is always beneficial."
"This image makes the second course look like it's falling apart, Ryosuke san." Fumihiro waved one of the pages as he spoke. "I doubt the FD, or hachi roku, could tackle this course without needing major repairs."
"Fair enough. We don't have to tackle both courses. The Prefecture has maintained the main pass, and it is in superior shape. We can come closer to our regular schedule if we only battle on the main pass."
Etsuya asked, "Please explain the time difference if we only battle at the main pass, Ryosuke san."
"If we skip the second course, we'll remain closer to our normal scheduled activities. We'll need to leave here around two in the afternoon on Friday to make it to the pass to get in enough training time. We will get back to the garage to drop off the vans by eight on Sunday morning."
"Ryosuke kun, may I explain the particulars about the unusual situation regarding this specific area?" Tohji requested sharply, with a hand on his hip.
Ryosuke nodded. "Listen to Tohji, minnasan."
"Minnasan, you should be very cautious about racing in this area. Because of the number of Gaijin, it could be fatal if you sleep on either course. Violent attacks on non natives by xenophobic native factions have happened in this specific area. Tight security measures are in place part of the time. Professional security guards are found along both courses to keep the peace during their specific run times. Guards posted on the main pass at night switch to the second course during the day. You won't have protection during the day at the main pass."
"Doushite would anyone attack the Gaijin, Tohji san? If these Gaijin work for different Embassies, isn't that declaring war on another nation?" Kenta asked with a frown.
"Our governments have worded international agreements to prevent individual acts of violence from being treated as declarations of war, Kenta. Still, a few extreme xenophobic individuals have caused meaningless deaths. Because of attachments to the various nations' embassies, retaliating we have deported, but not charged Gaijin when xenophobes attack members of their small community. That has made the most extreme natives angrier about their presence. Even with added security measures, attacks do happen."
Takumi shuddered as Keisuke spoke up next to him. "So, we need to expect attacks unless we convince a hotel to allow us to stay during the day. Che. Sounds like this battle needs a security plan in place. I can cover that problem, although it'll be a pain."
"I can't say anything for certain, Keisuke kun. It's possible that one of the anti-Gaijin factions will target a foreign employee before your scheduled matches if you do compete. If that happens, we should expect aggressive self preservation within the Gaijin community. Even if you get an invitation to compete with the Gaijin teams, it'll get rescinded the moment an intolerant faction harms someone."
Etsuya frowned. "If that's the case, what possibility is there of Keisuke san or Fujiwara actually battling Gaijins? Perhaps we best avoid these courses because of the many possible problems they present. Our team's safety is more important."
Ryosuke answered. "You make a very good point, Etsuya. To the best of my knowledge, the Gaijin racers ignore the main pass through an agreement with native racers. Unless they have extended explicit invitations, neither side goes onto the other's turf. The main pass won't require an invitation since we're natives. A friendly native the Gaijin trust will help decide our intentions before they will invite us to the second course. The leader of the Roaring Falls team is on his way here with an American chosen as the Gaijin representative. They will talk to us about the situation surrounding both courses. Akimoto should arrive with them soon."
Matsimoto asked. "Doushite would they come here, Ryosuke san? Couldn't we meet the Gaijin representative at a neutral place after we get there?"
"They asked to meet us here. Gaijin have different ideas toward street racing than we have. The Gaijin racers uphold traditions based upon which nation's driver holds the top slot on their course on any given week. The Gaijin have adopted a welcoming party custom for all visitors to honor their guests because that's the chosen custom of their current number one driver. Those require preparation."
Bursts of quiet conversation floated in the air as everyone tried to digest that piece of news. Takumi asked, "How long before they arrive, Ryosuke san?"
"Akimoto called to say the representatives are following him here. They should arrive in another ten to fifteen minutes." Tohji answered with a gentle smile.
Ryosuke spoke. "I want minnasan to consider whether you're comfortable around Gaijin. I also need to know if you wish to see Project D in any of this area's battles now that Tohji has explained the potential dangers. Stay close so we can settle this matter after meeting the representatives."
Ryosuke turned to speak to Tohji as a dismissal. Takumi turned back to glare at Keisuke. The blond sighed heavily and motioned him to follow as he headed to his front door. Opening the door, his spiky haired lover drew Takumi inside. They went into the kitchen, and Keisuke handed him a sports drink from the refrigerator.
Takumi asked as he took the bottle, "Doushite didn't you tell me that you speak English, Keisuke?"
"Gomen, my own. Akimoto's fluent in English because he lived in New York City when he was little. He has me practice English with him on occasion. Shinsei, another friend from my old gang, is half American. We talk on the phone a couple times a month. I became fluent in English because Shinsei shifts between languages without realizing it. Since we've never had any reason to speak English, it never crossed my mind to tell you."
"If there's anything else unusual that you do, or know, tell me so I don't get shocked like I was today. What will the American representative be like, Keisuke? I've only seen Gaijin on television, so don't know how I should act."
"Hm, well, Americans tend to laugh with their whole bodies when they're amused, and raise their voices when they disagree with something said. Americans are big on touch oriented greetings. Since we're strangers, the representatives will probably limit their greetings to handshakes, but if they really like a person, it's normal for Americans to get even touchier. Hand shakes are for strangers, while playful things like head locks, light punches, back slaps, or head rubs are how otoko greet their closest friends. I understand that many onnas give a quick kiss on the cheek, or hugs when they greet people they know. They ask questions we think are rude because being nosy about their friends' lives is normal in their culture." Keisuke explained.
"Nosy, touchy, and noisy?" Takumi asked with increasing dread.
"Hai. Try to remember that they aren't being rude by their customs, Takumi. Shinsei explained that some Americans want to get better acquainted with people quickly if they like them. It's normal to ask questions that make us uncomfortable, and give details we aren't used to hearing. Americans tend to take two or three words and smash them together. Many of their slang phrases are very confusing since we don't have the same background."
"Sounds like these Gaijin representatives will be overwhelming, Keisuke."
"Some Americans can be, until you get used to their quirks. Shinsei's attitudes and actions learned from his American otosān, when he lived in Okinawa, used to piss me off. Then I realized he wasn't being rude on purpose. In his otosān's culture, everything he did was considered appropriate, and even respectful."
"How was he rude, Keisuke?"
"Shinsei gives his close friends American greetings. He used to grab me in a head lock, and mess my hair up when we were in high school. He still smacks me on the back, or throws a light punch at my shoulder whenever I see him. He also believes he should hug onnas that he knows. To Shinsei, he's only showing that he respects them. To Shinsei, they're adopted imootosan, so he greets them like actual relatives. He never thought of hitting on my very first girlfriend, but, . . . I got in his face about his hugging her one day. I didn't understand he honestly didn't know he was pissing off four of his friends back then. Because he saw us as a type of extended family, he treated our girlfriends like family also. Shinsei only hugs onnas that are dating his friends who accept his cultural oddities now."
"Are you kidding me? I hope I never meet any of your American friends."
Keisuke snickered. "Shinsei never hits anyone hard enough to hurt them, Takumi. It's how he lets us know he really missed seeing us. I learned that Akimoto's habit of wrapping an arm around Tohji in public came from his life in America. We find that behavior unacceptable, but in American it has a very different meaning. I've heard that couples kiss, and hold each other in public, and nobody thinks it's inappropriate. If a couple does embarrass others, their friends tease them with obscene verbal jabs as punishment."
"I can't deal with another Akimoto, Keisuke. Let's forget about the second course. Even if we have to battle incompetent racers instead, at least we won't get embarrassed."
"Akimoto's not an American clone, Takumi. Even Shinsei gets annoyed with his outrageous behavior. Although obnoxious, Akimoto's the first to help others, which he learned from Americans. Many Americans believe you should help your neighbors even if you don't personally know them. They don't jump into situations that don't concern them directly to be rude. They intervene because someone needs help. You'll find that Shinsei's a great friend to have. He has different beliefs on some things, but I don't mind his quirks because Americans are generous with their friends, and vicious to their enemies, my own."
"Maybe, Keisuke. Still, I can't handle really nosy people. Itsuke's noisy, so that doesn't bother me. The thought of people prying into my business is a real problem."
"Don't worry about it, Takumi. Anyway, we should head back outside in case they arrived already."
Takumi nodded, picked up his file, and followed Keisuke out of the room. Following Keisuke, they headed back to the main group. Ryosuke waved them closer. "Keisuke, Fujiwara, would you come here for a moment?"
"Nan da, Aniki?"
"Tohji wants to tell you something."
"Domo, Ryosuke. You need to be aware that the Gaijin representative you're meeting can be very aggressive. Singing-Wolf san's dangerous when provoked. Expect a very cold and distant person. She's gruff, but she doesn't intend offence by speaking in blunt terms."
"Matte. Did you say her, Tohji? As in, . . . an onna's representing the Gaijin faction?" Keisuke demanded with a sharp look.
"Hai. I met her at my studio. So I'm giving you fair warning to keep things calm, Keisuke kun. You already know that Americans don't mean to be rude, but their culture's different from ours. However, Singing-Wolf san's very different from the expected American cultural oddities. Our producer made certain we understood that this is an onna to avoid insulting at all costs. They felt we needed to be aware that we had to avoid irritating her several days before she arrived at the studio."
Tohji crossed his arms over his chest as he gave all of them long looks that made Takumi squirm. It was as if the whipcord lean darker-haired man debated what else to say. Keisuke and Ryosuke both watched him as they waited for Tohji to continue.
"We were briefed about Singing-Wolf for a good reason. Her okāsan's family is proud of being a very old family of Norsemen who remain heavily involved with America's National Security network on several levels. They expected Singing-Wolf Samantha to follow in their family's tradition. Her combat training started when she was quite young. Her okāsan's family forced Samantha san to be even tougher than most full grown men. Pain doesn't phase Singing-Wolf because of that early training. For that reason, our producer asked her to do certain extra stunts for the last movie."
"Doushite do we need these details, Tohji." Ryosuke asked with a frown.
"You need to know how to handle this Gaijin onna before she arrives. Samantha san's otosān's family is Native American Indians, hence her last name. Most of them are involved with local Police, Texas Rangers, and the United States Marshal branches. Our producer told us that her otosān's family specializes in finding and capturing dangerous criminals alive. Like her okāsan's family, her otosān's family also trained her in several forms of combat."
"Great. You're warning us that this onna's essentially a nut-case, aren't you Tohji kun?"
"Close, but not quite, Keisuke. Although Samantha's cold, and wooden in personality, she's not insane. If you've ever met an orphan who spent most of their life in an orphanage, you'll notice the similarities right away."
Ryosuke interrupted. "Orphans tend to have very poor interaction skills, Tohji. They're defensive and always on guard."
"That's correct. Samantha's interactions with our movie crew were always very stifled. She's intelligent, and can be interesting to talk with so long as you don't expect much tonal inflection. Luckily, Singing Wolf Samantha loves cars. So that topic gets more natural responses than any other. The stuntmen that came from America mentioned that Samantha san's behavior is so deadpan because she only saw her ryōshin one week out of each year. The rest of the time she was shuffled around to different strangers' homes when not attending boarding school."
"The Gaijin representative is an orphan in her mental composition, if not literally." Ryosuke added to Tohji's drawn out explanation.
"Uhm, I don't understand. Doushite should we know so much personal information about the Gaijin representative, Tohji san?" Takumi scratched his head.
"I'm telling you about Singing Wolf because you need to be careful around her, Fujiwara kun. I can assure you that Samantha san is very unpredictable and dangerous. During the last three days of driving to complete the movie I was working on, I saw Singing Wolf san get angry with one of the other stuntmen. Samantha san almost killed him with her bare hands, and I'm not exaggerating. Her unstable childhood made this onna very aggressive, and they have fully trained her in killing other human beings. Her assignment at the American Embassy is a short term assignment as I understand things. However, her government stationed her here due to problems such as we discussed during the meeting, Minnasan."
"If this onna's so vicious, doushite would the Gaijin teams send her?" Ryosuke asked in an absent sounding voice.
"Several reasons come to mind. Singing-Wolf is always fair minded in her dealings with others, unless provoked. She's not quite proficient in our language, but can converse without a translator if you speak slower so she can make mental translations. Samantha san's trained in diverse fighting styles so can protect herself, if it is necessary. An onna is also less likely to receive negative reactions than an otoko can expect. We tend to be considerate of onnas, and show them more courtesy."
"Oh, come on, Tohji kun. This onna can't be all that dangerous if the Gaijin are sending her. I bet whomever is with her has the job of protecting her."
"Keisuke kun, I've seen her fight. She's dangerous, plus the many rumors about her prior posts give me added cause for alarm. Every rumor has an identical underlying theme. Singing-Wolf Samantha has almost killed herself several times in her determined efforts to completely destroy her enemies. Several dreadful scandals surround a specific set of incidents where she's been deployed. They sent Singing Wolf to our country to remove her completely from her American deployments. Her government asked her otosān to insure she gets strictly controlled while she's in this country. This onna's not someone I'd wish to anger without a very good reason. Her habit of killing her opponents even if it kills her in the process isn't something the average person considers reasonable. I've even warned Akimoto to remain on his best behavior without fail."
Ryosuke san was frowning again. "It sounds like this onna will become very unpleasant if we don't handle this meeting with finesse. I'll insure minnasan is cautious around her when they arrive."
"Tohji? Libido always traps Akimoto's brains in his balls. Keeping his hands off an onna he finds hot is impossible. You know that better than anyone else. You could've had me go and meet the reps to prevent any problems." Keisuke jerked a cigarette from his pack as he spoke in a soft, menacing growl.
"If Aki does anything stupid, he won't get away unscathed, Keisuke kun. It'll be a good lesson for him. I think Aki will try to behave because he knows that Project D's reputation is riding on his behavior. Singing-Wolf is a relief guard and chauffeur at the American Embassy because she knows how to fight, and drive. I heard that she'll be returning to her country in late November. Everything involving her last assignment will be completed by then."
"How many years has this onna been driving, Tohji? Isn't she the one that did the stunt you couldn't because you lack the last set of credentials?" Ryosuke asked as he rested his chin on the back of his knuckles.
"Hai. Samantha san began driving younger than most. Whenever her boarding school closed for summer break, Samantha stayed with different relatives. After Singing-Wolf-sama divorced his wife, the courts gave him custody of their daughter. Samantha went to the Indian reservation where her otosān's family lives. Because they're farmers, or ranchers, and poor, Samantha san helped them by driving supplies around the ranch, although she was under age to do so."
"Sounds a bit like Fujiwara. How old is Singing Wolf?"
Ryosuke's carefree observation made Takumi cringe. It was not well known that he had been driving for five years, instead of one year. His driver's license was barely a year old. Takumi gave Keisuke a concerned glare, trying to get his attention so he could silence his older brother.
"I heard that Samantha san was thirteen or fourteen when her otosān's family started taking her during school breaks. They always put her to work. Due to their reservation status they obtained some kind of driving permit for her to complete very specific types of errands within a certain distance of the reservation boundaries. She was born in nineteen seventy two, so that would make her twenty-five."
"She's my age?" Ryosuke sounded surprised.
"I think she's older by a few months. Honestly, Samantha san's a much better stunt driver than myself. For all the practice I've put in, I can't make cars do the same things, Ryosuke kun. Only very rare talent accounts for her skill level. She's a driving genius, and masters any car's settings within fifteen to thirty minutes."
Keisuke nodded. "Fujiwara's like that, Tohji. His adaptability, and learning curve after every race are due to his unusually strong talent. His innate feel for a car's settings is downright freakish."
The group turned to look at the edge of the parking lot as a deep growling sound gave the impression of something charging toward to the main complex. The unseen enigma silenced all conversation as the other Project D members also turned to look for the source of the roar. A recognizable engine tone evolved from the deep rumble and pounded out a deep bass rhythm as an unseen machine drew closer. The volume deafened them even without a visual of the car. Takumi was accustomed to high-pitched exhaust, not this deep resonances that made his heartbeat change tempo, to fit an engine's pulsations.
