Chapter 26
‘storm’
“No. I said it before, I said it thirty times, and I’m saying it again. No, no, no!”
“Onii-chan!”
“What were you thinking, hiding something like that from me? You knew I’d never approve!”
“That’s why I hid it!”
“What is the matter with you?” Touya beseeched, flicking his sister’s head as if he were checking the ripeness of a nut. “You never hid anything from me before. You used to be a modest, respectful girl that wore sensible clothes that covered up sensible parts of your body. Now look at you, you look like a whore.”
Sakura lifted her chin haughtily. “I don’t know what that is, but I don’t care. I like the dresses I get to wear here, they’re all very pretty. And I like dancing! I didn’t want to stop and I knew if I told you that you would try to make me.”
The pair fumed at one another while Yue watched with bated breath from his armchair, barely pretending to look disinterested. The argument lasted longer than dinner, apparently, and now they’d come storming up to his once-quiet study to settle things once and for all – except, as far as Yue could see, nothing was getting settled. Fascinated, he watched the tall dark brother and petite little sister circle one another.
“You looked ridiculous.”
“I did not! Meilin taught me that dance and she said I looked beautiful when I did it. Meilin wouln’t lie.”
“And who, pray tell, is Meilin?”
“My dancing teacher.”
Touya threw a venomous look at Yue. “She has a teacher now?”
“Don’t look at me, Toya, I knew no more about this than you did.”
“Then how did she get in the goddamn castle?”
“She was Tomoyo’s friend, Tomoyo is the one that asked her to come,” Sakura explained hastily, putting herself between Yue and Touya’s line of sight. “I apologize for beginning my lessons without your consent, Master Yue -”
“You’re apologizing to him but not me.”
“- but I have a request. My teacher wants me to learn more, but she can’t afford to come here for free. I-If you don’t mind, may I please have some money to pay her for more lessons?”
“No!”
Yue nodded graciously. “You may.”
“What!”
Sakura lit up and curtsied deeply. “Thank you, Master Yue. I am very appreciative of your generosity.”
“I didn’t approve this!”
“You don’t have to,” she retorted. “Master Yue already did.”
“I don’t care what he ‘approves’, I’m still your brother and what I say goes.”
Sakura uttered some kind of strangled noise of frustration and shoved Touya away from her, though she didn’t have the strength to send him back more than a step or two. “Why must you be so bossy? Don’t you care that I really like it?”
“I care that you’re demeaning yourself and don’t even seem to realize it. If I have to be the only one of us who still has even a modicum of self-respect, then you can be sure I’m going to stand in the way of something like this.”
“Dancing is not demeaning!”
“It’s a disgrace to our family. Thank God Father isn’t alive anymore and didn’t have to see it like I did.”
The sharp comment caught her like a slap across the face; that much was obvious to Yue. Sakura’s features went blank with surprise and then crumpled in grief, before she whirled around to hide her face from them both. Touya winced when he realized he’d gone too far and tried to put a hand on her shoulder.
“Sakura, I’m sorry -”
“Don’t.” She shrugged off his hand. “That was too mean.”
“I didn’t mean it. I was just… upset. I don’t like the thought of you keeping secrets from me, we promised we wouldn’t do that anymore.”
“I wouldn’t have to keep the secret if you would think of me more than yourself at times like this.” Wiping away a tear, she turned just enough to meet her brother’s eyes. “Don’t you care, Onii-chan, that I’m all alone in the day? I don’t have anything to do, almost no one to talk to. Since Meilin started teaching me I have something to practice, something to work on, and I really look forward to her lessons because she’s a friend now. Will you take all that away just because you don’t approve?”
Something invisible around Touya seemed to collapse at those words, or maybe it was the sight of that tear. Yue watched his shoulders drop and all the self-righteous anger melt away, exposing an almost heart-rending tenderness in his eyes. Eyes that were only for his sister.
“Sakura, you know I don’t want you to be unhappy.”
“Then just let me do this. Just this one thing, and I swear I’ll never do anything else you don’t like.”
He closed his eyes and rolled a defeated groan down his throat. “I really don’t approve of this, Sakura. But… if it means that much to you, then fine. I won’t argue about it.”
The tears vanished immediately and Sakura’s back straightened, hope sparkling in her eyes. “Really?”
“Really.”
“Oh, thank you, Onii-chan!” She pounced on her brother with a hug, and Yue nearly flinched at the jealousy that curdled up at the sight. The boy was doing his nighttime ritual again, planting a gentle kiss on his sister’s brow, and he watched the lips caress her skin with an ache in his chest.
“You’re tired. Go to bed already, you little monster.”
“Nii-chan! Well, I really am. Goodnight.” She turned away from her brother and curtsied politely toward Yue. “Goodnight, Master.”
He could only bring himself to nod. She opened the study doors, where Ralen had been impatiently waiting, and only after the two had left could Yue exhale.
Touya just harumphed scornfully under his breath. “This is all your fault.”
“And how is that?”
“It just is.” His slave stomped off in the opposite direction of his sister, out of the study and into Yue’s private bedchamber. Eventually, deliberately not hurrying, Yue rose and followed. Touya was already sprawled across his bed when he entered, one arm thrown over his face as if he couldn’t bear to look at the world anymore.
“Things are… oh, they’re just going great. My sister is a pleasure slave, wears a collar around her neck, and oh yeah, now she’s a dancer. This is exactly how I wanted her to grow up, I’m very pleased with myself.”
“Always you fret and fuss over that girl,” Yue sighed irritably. “Isn’t it tiresome? Let’s talk about something more pleasant, like how jealous you were to see me watching her dance.”
“No thanks,” Touya growled.
“If you must know, Toya, I felt nothing while I watched.”
“Hmm?”
“She is pretty, yes.” Yue eased onto his bed, bracing himself up by one arm. “And quite talented at her new hobby. But how could I desire her when I already have you?”
Touya’s arm slipped off his face and he blinked at Yue, wearing a look he hadn’t quite seen on the boy before.
“Well,” he managed to say, eventually. “That helps. I mean, not that I’m relieved that you like me better or anything like that, but that you don’t want her.”
“Of course.”
A gurgle sounded from somewhere in Touya’s stomach, and he was quick to put a hand over it.
“Let me guess. You were too busy shouting at your sister to bother eating any of your dinner.”
“Mmngh,” Touya mumbled, vaguely admitting it. “It’s not important. Why don’t I just eat dinner with you?”
Every spiteful thought of jealousy promptly flew out of Yue’s mind, leaving only surprise and not a little thrill at the suggestion. But –
“Unfortunately, slave, I do not eat.”
Now it was Touya’s turn to be surprised, and he sat up. “Huh? You what?”
“I do not eat. You know perfectly well that I am not a human being, Toya, I am not constructed to live on food. I derive my energy from elsewhere.”
“Such as the moon.”
“Perhaps.”
“So you’ve never eaten? Anything?”
“Never,” Yue assured him.
“But you drink that wine every night.”
Ah. That was true enough, but the taste did nothing for him and of course alcohol could not affect him. Yue shrugged marginally. “An old habit, I suppose; it’s something of a ritual. I will call Ralen, and have him send dinner up for you.”
“Mm.” Touya did not seem altogether concerned about eating, creeping across the space between them until he could press his ear against Yue’s chest. “So, if you’re not like a human inside, what’s in there?”
“I do not completely know, anymore than you completely know what’s inside you.”
“Strange.” Touya lifted his head just enough to look Yue straight in the eye, so close their noses nearly brushed one another. Yue did not have a heart, in the same way any ordinary human did, but whatever organ beat in his chest thumped a little harder at the unexpected nearness. What slave had ever managed that? “You really are a mystery.”
“As are you.”
Sakura looked ready to burst with anticipation, and the moment Ralen slammed the door shut she jumped up and down on the courtyard stones. “Well? Well? I finally did it, I finally danced for him! Did you watch? How was it? Did I look okay?”
Li followed her rapid up-and-down movement with his eyes until he got dizzy and had to look away. “Uhh… fine. You looked, um, fine.”
“I was so nervous!”
“Didn’t look it,” he assured her. “At least, not after you started.”
“Oh good,” she exhaled, relief and joy shining out of her eyes. “It really was a very scary thing, but I’m so happy I did it. Master Yue liked it! He even said it was alright to keep taking lessons!”
“Congratulations.” A little worn out from her cheer, Li snagged Spirit’s halter and started walking. Light as a feather, Sakura skipped alongside.
“Of course, I have you to thank. You were the one that gave me the confidence to try; I could have never done it alone.”
“-znothing,” he muttered, eyes on the flagstones.
“No, it wasn’t! I was very happy to have you there, it meant so much to me.”
“Mnn.” Li felt the familiar tide of heat rushing toward his face, and scrambled for another topic. “You sort things out with your brother alright?”
Sakura huffed in an exasperated manner. “I just knew he would react like that, I knew you were right to keep it a secret. I wish he hadn’t found out that way, it was mortifying to hear him yell about it. He carried on for such a long time too… but in the end he gave up, especially when Master Yue told me I could keep my lessons. He’s still sulking some, but he’s not angry anymore.”
“At you or Yue?”
“At me…” Sakura stopped just short of the grass while Li continued on, pausing to release Spirit. “Oh!”
“What?”
“I completely forgot about before, when Onii-chan first found us. He was yelling at Master Yue too, wasn’t he? And he looked very angry, just like the time he punched Ralen. What happened? Onii-chan didn’t get in trouble again, did he?”
“Nah. Lucky for him, considering how much he was hollerin’.” Li tilted his face up the sky and then turned, making eye contact. “All they did was talk for a minute, and then your brother ran after you.”
“They didn’t mind you?”
“I was standing behind that pillar. Yue probably forgot I was there and I wasn’t much inclined to remind him.”
“I see.” Her relieved smile picked back up, and her shoulders relaxed. “What did they say?”
What indeed. Li’s gaze moved back up the sky, eyeing a few clouds. By that one accidental and very unwilling eavesdrop, the captain was now in possession of one of the juiciest bits of gossip to ever fly about in these white marble halls: Yue’s latest pleasure slave was sharing the lord’s bed. It was the stuff of thrills for the rest of the servants, but unfortunately for them Li wasn’t the gossiping type. Especially not to this girl.
“Nothing much. Just some fussing about whether the dancing was your idea or Yue’s.”
Sakura laughed. “Silly Onii-chan. As if Master Yue would ever think of such a thing for me. He barely knows I exist.”
Li wasn’t so sure about that. He watched his unlikely companion settle herself in the grass, thinking about the other things he’d overheard, things that made him feel a little unsettled inside. Like Yue, declaring once he thought he was alone that he should have Sakura dance for him again. Because Yue liked her brother’s apparent jealousy? Li clenched his fists at the thought. And there was something her brother said, too.
…will always be the most important man in Sakura’s life. Not you or anyone else…
“It’s gonna rain.”
“Really? It’s not that cloudy, how do you know?”
“Magic.” A cool breeze picked up his bangs and played with them, and the stray tendrils of her hair too. “Mine is attuned to the elements of the storm – thunder, wind, and lightning. It’s gonna be a big one.”
“Amazing!” she complimented. “It must be wonderful to sense that.”
“Depends,” grunted Li, “on the storm.”
All afternoon it gathered itself, and by sunset the sky had become a dark and forbidding picture. There was really no sunset to be seen, and Touya knew the time only because the magical fire in Yue’s room had lit up and begun to blaze away in the dusk. Evening was much darker than usual, and eventually charcoal-colored clouds began to light up with formless lightning. Fascinated, Touya pressed himself against the balcony rail to watch.
“Come inside, Toya. It will rain soon.” He didn’t turn around at Yue’s softly spoken order, despite his experience that orders from Yue did not remain soft and gentle when ignored. “Slave.”
“In a minute. I just want to watch.”
“Surely you’ve seen a simple thunderstorm before.”
“Plenty of times, but I never had the time to watch it before. If a storm was coming, I had to hurry to bring the flock in, or finish repairing someone’s shed, or run home to make sure we had no new holes in the roof. I couldn’t just stand and watch the lightning flash in the clouds.” Another gust hit him and he breathed it in greedily, relishing the fresh zip of moisture in the air. It was remarkably similar to Yue’s scent.
“Such a miserable childhood,” Yue tsked. “It troubles me to think of my slave forced to live in such poverty, performing menial work.”
“It was fine. You don’t seem very troubled when I’m forced to do what you want.”
“It is different, you’re mine now. So come here.”
“In a minute, I said.”
“Slave,” Yue repeated, this time his voice lower pitched in warning. A magnificent bolt of lightning streaked across the sky, followed by a crash of thunder and a single warning drop of water on Touya’s nose. He tilted his head back and the clouds burst open with their contents, showering the world in summer rain. Touya was soaked in a matter of seconds, but it didn’t occur to him to mind.
“See what’s happened?” Yue sighed irritably. “Now you’ve gotten all wet because you didn’t listen to me.”
“I don’t care. I can’t remember the last time I felt rain on my skin, it feels wonderful.”
Indeed it did. It was too late to be a cold rain, and the wild fury of raindrops splattering against him evoked a feeling of heady freedom. Again the thunder crashed around him, sky lit up with electric fire, triggering thrills of adrenaline and exhiliration.
“You’ll get sick,” Yue pressed. “Come inside.”
“No.”
“Slave, you are making me angry.”
“I’m not your slave.” Touya pushed wet hair out his eyes so he could meet Yue’s gaze directly, across the distance of the balcony. “If you want me so bad, come and get me. What’s stopping you?”
Yue’s feline eyes narrowed a bit. “I dislike the rain.”
“Really?”
“Really.” He crossed his arms, almost petulantly. “I do not like to get my hair wet.”
Didn’t like… The strongest creature Touya had ever known, terrifying in his power and magic, and he could not bring himself to step out into the rain for his hair. The sheer absurdity struck him as terribly funny and he burst into laughter.
“It isn’t funny, slave. You are in considerable trouble right now.”
“Not if you can’t come and get me. Maybe I’ll just stay out here all night.”
“Don’t talk nonsense. I won’t allow it.”
“You can’t stop me,” Touya replied, in a tone that was almost sing-song. The storm had unleashed a wild abandonment within him, and he found it impossible to feel fear, or caution, or anything resembling care for what Yue might do to hurt him. “You ca~n’t get to me. You ca~n’t touch me.”
On a whim he wandered closer, almost within snatching distance, and made a show of licking raindrops from his fingers. Yue stared, and he licked his lips suggestively.
“Too bad. And I was really in the mood to be with you tonight, wanted you on top of me, wanted you to pound me like this rain’s doing right now. But if you can’t come get me… then I guess we can’t do that.”
Yue’s eyes flashed like the lightning around them and he reached for Touya, but his arm was not quite long enough to reach. Maliciously Touya grinned.
“You are in terrible trouble,” Yue informed him. “When I catch you, there will be severe punishment.”
“Do I look like I’m afraid of a spanking?”
Some distant part of Touya couldn’t believe the things he was saying, or the way he was teasing Yue, but it was beyond him how to stop it and he wasn’t even inclined to try. The storm had made Touya powerful, more powerful than Yue. Such a power needed to be used, and like an aphrodisiac it directed Touya’s attention to Yue’s body.
Yue was staring at Touya, looking rather stunned by that last remark, and Touya curled a finger in invitation. Pouring rain or not, howling wind or not, Yue could not resist that invitation and stepped out from underneath his shelter. Within a second he was soaked, his silk clothes clinging to his body and frost-colored hair darkened to a pewter shade. Neither noticed. Yue drew closer and Touya backed up before him, articles of clothing dropping to the floor in a sodden trail of afterthought while rain danced on free and bare skin. When Yue caught him they clawed at one another in their eagerness, desperately caressing the other’s chest with hands and tongues, struggling to bite and suck the other’s neck. The heat in Touya’s body burned so painfully that he was only dimly aware of the rain lashing his body now, only vaguely noticed the wet stones under his back when Yue pushed him there and spread his legs. Furiously Touya pumped himself and Yue covered his hand with his own, adding pressure and speed, dipping his head to occasionally lick the weeping tip until all that burning heat erupted. Touya groaned with delight, but when he felt Yue lift up his hips in preparation to penetrate, he tangled his fingers in Yue’s wet hair and pulled forward, drawing him off his intention. Not this night, no, not in his storm.
He clasped Yue’s body to his own in the moment that Yue was caught by surprise, and before he could recover Touya rolled over to the side. Now it was the master on his back, astonished eyes ignored when Touya pinned his wrists to the stones and pelted Yue’s chest with little bites and kisses. Both knew perfectly well that Yue could have thrown Touya off at any time but he did not, allowing Touya to stroke and fondle his erection, bringing him to the point of ecstasy but not beyond while lightning danced across the sky over them both. Gritting his teeth, Touya impaled himself upon Yue and arched his back against Yue’s knees. He was almost too late – within seconds Yue climaxed with a moan louder than any he’d ever made. An echo of his pleasure ran through Touya’s body, and at the same time they both shuddered.
A fading rumble of thunder sounded, and rain continued to pour over them both. In all that water they remained, unmoving, both panting for air and too limp to contemplate motion. Eventually Touya slumped forward and braced himself by planting a hand on either side of Yue’s shoulders.
“See? Rain’s not so bad.”
“If it can make my slave behave like this every storm, then no. I don’t believe rain is very bad at all.”
Touya relaxed his elbows, lowering his body to Yue’s until his face was just a breath away, their lips almost touching but not quite. Transmitted through their bare skin, he could feel Yue’s heart beating in sync with his own.
“I’m not your slave.”
Wincing a little, he pushed himself away and rolled off, stumbling some when he got to his feet. “I know I want a hot bath,” he continued, conversationally, turning to speak over his shoulder. “If you want me to wash your hair, you’d better come and join me.”
Another gust of wind had come. It ruffled through the trees, teasing spring leaves, showering another handful of pale petals over them both. Same trees, same flowers, same clearing. Reflexively Yue’s hand flew to his throat, just to check, and sure enough the heavy cuff was still fastened around his neck. At the other end of the chain stood Touya, lacing the links through his fingers with a nonchalant air.
“Drop that at once,” he ordered sharply, but the tone of his command did not seem to fit here. Touya didn’t blink.
“How was it,” he asked instead, “tonight in the rain? You liked it, didn’t you?”
“Put down that chain.”
“You followed me out into it, you who hates to get wet, followed me out into the rain simply because I beckoned you and you could not resist. Tell me again who is the master between us?”
“Be silent, slave,” Yue snapped, to no effect. Touya only smiled.
“I surprised you in the rain, didn’t I? You weren’t expecting me to take control like that, weren’t expecting me to set the pace, climb on top, make you bend to my will -”
“Stop it!” Yue barked. “Stop talking!”
At that Touya’s eyes glinted maliciously, and he tugged on the chain sharply enough to yank Yue off balance. He stumbled across the distance between them, stopping only when Touya put a hand to his chest. He should not have been afraid, ancient and powerful as he was, but to watch that smile spread across Touya’s face was to feel a dark fear spreading across his heart.
“You of all people should know better than to order your own dream to be silent, Yue. What is it you fear? The loss of control over our relationship? Or the loss of control over your feelings? Or maybe it’s just the look in my eyes when I pull you this close and can still turn away, when we both know you can’t.”
The warmth of his breath was like a tickle across his skin, the softness of his lips an agonizing presence hovering just short of contact. Trapped in that black gaze, Yue could do nothing but tremble at his nearness.
A long moment passed, and eventually Touya seemed to tire of the teasing. His grin softened, and he stepped back enough so that Yue could breathe free air. He did not, however, drop his end of the chain.
“You followed me out into the rain,” he commented, thoughtfully. There was a wondering look in his eyes that made Yue uneasy. “Where else will you follow me?”
A sharp clap of thunder split the sky and jolted Yue into a sitting position, wheezing for air and clutching at the sheets until his heartrate had slowed and the tightness of his lungs relaxed. The summer storm still raged outside, tossing sheets of rain in the darkness while thunder and lightning played on. This was real, his silent and still castle, and flower-bedecked clearings were not.
Breathe….
His sudden movement had disturbed the slave sleeping at his side, and groggily Touya opened his eyes. He was half covered in Yue’s snowy locks, draped in the hair that he’d spent hours washing and drying and combing after their tryst in the rain, but it did not seem to be bothering him.
He mumbled something that sounded vaguely like a question, and Yue put a hand to his brow. “It’s nothing. Go back to sleep.”
Touya obeyed, and within seconds his breathing had become deep and even, sleeping all wrapped up in Yue’s hair. It was not possible to take in such a sight and not soften, to not bend over and drop a gentle kiss on his slave’s unfurrowed brow. So he did, and never mind the tiny knot in his stomach when he looked at that face.
It was, after all, just a dream.

Disclaimer: I do not own these characters
I suck at promises to write faster. I wish I knew what was holding me back. Still, I will persevere! It may take three years, it may take four, but I WILL finish this. This I swear by… the stars!
Um. Too much Les Miserables. Best review goes this time to Ta Boo, who did me the favor of quoting her favorite line, and noticed bits and pieces of Yue’s behavior that I had hoped would be noticed. And she didn’t guess that Yue turns into Yukito on the new moon, which pleases me a lot because everyone else is still doing that and I swear (by the stars!) that is NOT what is happening. Promise! So everybody can stop guessing that, already.
This chapter was also on the short side. I had intended to make it longer, but upon reflection I decided the next batch of events should have their own separate chapter. Sumimasen, and I hope that the next installment will be up to my usual standard length. Ja ne!
