Sano and Cho made their way out of the restaurant still in disbelief and in shock after seeing Saitou and Mitsu having, what seemed to the both of them, an intimate meal together.
Sano was really confused right about then and faced Cho for answers.
Sano blurted out and demanded answers from Cho. “What the fuck was that all about?”
“Well, if you can’t figure it out for yourself, you’re even denser than I thought you are.” Cho snapped back at Sano. “What the hell do you think it looked like in there? Shit, it’s no wonder why Saitou got on my case, and even threatened me to leave that lady alone. He was after her all along!”
“Huh, what the fuck? Why would Saitou tell me that he…" Sano’s voice trailed off when he caught himself almost letting the cat out of the bag about he and Saitou.”
Cho looked at Sano with his one eyed squint to get the drift of what Sano was about to let slip.
“I’m beginning to get the feeling that there is more going on here than I am aware of,” Cho said, as he observed Sano’s behavior.
Sano avoided the inquest and escaped the subject. “I need a fucken drink. Shit, I need ten goddamn drinks! I’m going to the nomiya, you coming?”
“I have an errand to tend to before I can cut loose. I’ll check on you later if you’re still at the nomiya." Cho turned quickly and glanced behind him at Sano. “I shouldn’t be more than an hour,” he said remembering that he still had that transport to do with Horie.
“Yeah, I’ll be there alright… I’ll be there all fucken night if I have to,” Sano lifted his brows in acknowledgement as he punched his fist into his palm.
The two young men split up and went their separate ways, with a lot to digest. It didn't look promising, not in the least.

“Arigatou!” Kaoru called to Kenshin from the room in the bathhouse. I really appreciate you preparing the hot bath for me.”
“No problem Miss Kaoru,” Kenshin called back from outside the building as he stacked more wood to burn below the bath bin.
Kaoru disrobed and hung her kimono up on the clothes hanger next to the door. She used the handy bamboo bucket to scoop up some of the hot steaming water from the big bath bin and pours it on her tired body, soaps her-self and thought back on the conversation she had earlier with Kenshin.
Why is Kenshin always so weird when I try to be intimate with him? I’m afraid to ask him for a reason, but if I don’t find out soon, I won’t be able to think on anything else but that. Kaoru’s thoughts keep running away as doubt fills her mind and heart.
With the wash and the rinse out of the way, Kaoru slowly stepped into the big bath-bin and eased herself into the water. The hot water instantly soothed her tired muscles, relaxing her while the tension of the day slipped away. She leaned her head back and closed her eyes as total relaxation was welcomed. Floating in front of her are her hands, and her arms in their own relaxed state apart from the rest of her body. Kaoru relaxed her mind as well, and tried to repel the negative, doubting thoughts she had previously about Kenshin.
Ahhh, Kenshin, thoughts of him in a more sensual way seep in through the channels of her relaxed mind.
His touch upon her face, and her hands upon his body, the thrill of it all was so new to the young maiden virgin. Just the thought of Kenshin sent sensual goose bumps up and down her body drawing heat to her most personal body parts.
Thoughts begin to race through her mind at almost a panic’s pace. How do I get Kenshin to see how much I want him? Maybe he knows, but he doesn’t want me! A single tear rolled down her cheek and fell into the steaming water below her chin.
Kenshin cut the tofu into little cubes and added it to the gruel he was preparing for their evening meal. Since Sano had been missing from the dojo for most of the day, Kenshin wasn't preparing any extras tonight, so just a small portion would do. Kenshin’s mind skipped past all the slicing and dicing, past Sano’s meal, and onto Aoshi’s arrival to Tokyo.
He struggled to keep his thoughts of Aoshi confined, but the more he fought with it, the harder, and stronger the thoughts came at him. Kenshin looked down at the crimson liquid that grew on the cutting board beneath the white turnip. His eyes widened when he realized that he had cut through the tip of his index finger.
Surprised at the fact that he had become so preoccupied with his thoughts on Aoshi’s arrival, he lifted his finger and gazed at the little wound. The flow of blood reminded him of his past and the many times he had seen blood flow in much the same way. How quickly a human body drained itself of life was only a reflection of how short a lifespan truly was.
Life, Kenshin thought to himself. How will he decide to live its quick passing? Kenshin found himself at a fork in his life’s roadway. Which way should he go from here? How he wished he could live his life by traveling both roads.
“How difficult could that be?” Kenshin questioned himself out loud.
“Kenshin?” Kaoru rushed toward him and took his injured hand into hers and examined the bleeding finger. “Are you okay?”
“Yes, Miss Kaoru, that I am,” Kenshin said right away as he admired Kaoru’s sincere caring gesture for him.
“I mean,” Kaoru looked into his eyes, “are you really okay? I’m not just referring to this cut on your finger. Kenshin, it scares me when you are like this.”
Kenshin, felt a bit guilty for causing Kaoru concern. He took his finger from Kaoru and wrapped it with a piece of cloth, and said, “No need to worry, Miss Kaoru. I am fine, but the meal won’t be if I don’t wash the turnip before I add it to the stew.”
“Let’s wrap your finger first,” Kaoru left to find some bandages.
In her absence Kenshin quietly sighed. “I am in need of bandages for my heart as well.”

“You say they both have the same tattoo? Are you sure about that?” Saitou asked investigating Mitsu’s discovery.
“Hai, Mr. Fujita. I am sure it is exactly the same in shape and size. Both Hisomu-san and Mochi-san wear them on the same shoulder. It is an emblem of the a mountain and river.”
Saitou placed his hashi on his chawan, reached over to take up his sake vessel and enjoyed more of it while trying to remember something he’d heard from a *shinobi who was a member the third troop he captained while in the Shinsengumi.
“There was a shinobi I worked with during the war who told me his reason for having a tattoo much like the one you are describing to me,” Saitou said.
Mitsu’s eyes widened in hopes that, perhaps Saitou may shed some light and ease her anxiety over this whole mystery.
“Go on Mr. Fujita, please.”
"This particular shinobi was very good at what he did. As a matter of fact, he taught me a few things about stealth that I practice today.” Saitou took another drink of sake as he searched his memory. “As I recall I asked him about the strange tattoo on his shoulder. It was an image of mountains and a flowing river beside it.”
“Oh my, yes!” Mitsu became very excited. “It does sound like the very same emblem, doesn’t it Mr. Fujita?”
“It could very well be. The story the man told me back then was very interesting now that I recall what he said. He told me that he was from a village that had been at constant battle with another village close to them. His people were slowly being killed, and the women stolen and made to work in brothels.”
Mitsu covered her mouth with her tiny hand and silently gasped at the terrible story.
Saitou went on to say, “The shinobi told me that some of the people from his village fled into the mountains and lived in caves, and the children were given tattoos by the elders to remind them where to return if they should be separated, or stolen. The tattoo showed a valley between three mountain peaks and a river running beside it. It was a map, if you will, of where they belonged.”
“That means…” Mitsu’s voice trailed off.
Saitou completed the sentence for her, “That means, if their tattoos are identical, then Horie and Mochi Hana are more than likely from the same village.”
“Hisomu-san did mention that Mochi-san seemed familiar to him, but he wasn’t able to put his finger on where they’d met before,” Mitsu said in amazement.
“Arigatou gosaimasu Mr. Fujita. I was hoping that perhaps in all your travels you might have run into the emblem before.” Mitsu smiled, “I was correct in assuming you would know.”

“Another bottle… uh, make that two bottles of sake,” Sano blurted his order out to the waitress while he sat at his chabudai in the nomiya trying to understand what he had seen earlier.
His heart was still racing and the lump in is throat seemed to be getting bigger. Sano was choked up over the scene he witnessed in the restaurant between Saitou and that woman.
Sano curled his fingers inward into a tight fist where one could plainly see the strength of his grip by the whites of his knuckles displayed while he muttered to himself. “Now I know why that bastard didn’t ask me over to his place tonight. The asshole had other plans all along! Damn it!” Sano struck the chabudai with a quick downward motion causing everything upon it to quake, and turned the heads of many who were seated close by.
Sano looked around and realized that he was putting on a public performance, without even trying. Not wanting to be thrown out of there for causing a scene, he calmed himself down and took one of the two sake bottles in hand and drank half of the contents down.
“You must be in a hurry to erase the damn images from your brain, ‘Rooster-Head’,” Cho mentioned as he sat down opposite from Sano.
“Well, do you fucken blame me ‘Broom-Head’?” Sano slurred his question out to the arriving young man as he wiped his mouth with his sleeve after downing the sake.
Cho leaned forward and eyed Sano. “Blame you for what?” Cho shrugged. “I have reason for being upset due to the fact that I happen to be ‘in love’ what that purty little lady Saitou was with tonight.” Cho raised an eyebrow and form a suspicious expression on his face. “I’m still trying to figure out why the hell you are upset about Saitou and my lady.”
It hit Sano between his eyes. Sano knew why he was behaving like a jealous lover, but Cho didn’t have a clue. Sano looked up at Cho and shrugged, not really knowing what to say to the curious Kyoto man. He felt the sake and didn't really care what Cho was trying to get at.
“I’ve got my reasons ‘Broom-Head', and it won’t help the situation if I discussed it with you, so shut up and drink some sake before it gets cold. Oh, while you’re at it, order a couple more bottles.”
Cho picked up the sake bottle and lifted it up to a near by waitress and signaled that another round was needed at their chabudai. Cho then drank, hoping that the sake would ease the edge of the image he had of Saitou and Mitsu in his mind as well.
Cho lowered the sake bottle and his lips found his upper arm’s sleeve to wipe the excess from the corner of his mouth. He raised his gaze and scanned Sano, and still wondered about the reason behind Sano’s reaction and behavior tonight.
Cho calmly stated, “I get it now, you’re sleeping with the old wolf, aren’t you?”
Sano didn’t flinch at Cho’s statement. He simply looked up from the sake bottle he held in his hand, and smiled.
“First sane statement you’ve said all night, ‘Broom-Head'. Took you long enough to figure that out."
Sano tipped the bottle's tail up into the air and drained the very last drop from it, and set the empty on the chabudai.
“Shit, it’s none of my business what the hell goes on between people, but I’m curious about one thing…” Cho scratched his head in his attempt to comprehend the situation between Saitou and Sano. “…Aren’t you damn scared he’ll end up killing you if you piss him off good enough?”
Sano let out a loud belly laugh that drew the attention of others in the room again. “What the hell are you talking about, asshole? Is that what you think of Saitou?”
“You would too if you knew about his past and seen that wolf in action! That sucker is mean!”
“Well, there’s another side of him that not many know about. I guess he’s keeping it between us. But right now, I want to know what the shit is going on, and who is that broad with him anyway?” Sano asked as he raised his hand to hurry the waitress with their order.
“That unfortunate lovely lady got herself wrapped up with a heavy duty drug-lord who recently started smuggling weapons into Japan on top of opium. She’s suck into it on the opposing side, but I have a strong feeling she wants out.” Cho kept shaking his head, as though this was a sad story indeed.”
“Yeah but, what the hell is Saitou doing there alone… with her?” Sano started to slur even more.
“Well, that’s the strange part. Saitou didn’t clue me in about what’s up with their meeting. Alls I can tell you about that, is that Saitou warned me a few times not to get involved with the lady,” Cho said as he wiped some spilled sake off his gi. “Then I see him out with her, doing exactly what he told me not to!”
“Shit!” Sano pounded the chabudai with his clinched fist again.

“I’m glad everything is completed in here, Kenshin,” Kaoru said as she placed her father’s urn centered in the alcove. It’s so peaceful in here, and I’m sure my father appreciates the hard work you’ve done in his honor.”
Kenshin walked over to her with a big grin on his face. “It is my pleasure to see you smile, Miss Kaoru. I am also glad your father now has a resting place such as this, and time spent here by any of us will be comfortable and calming to one’s spirit.”
Kaoru moved over to Kenshin, placed her hand on his shoulder and timidly asked him, “Do you think we have a future together?”
The question surprised him, for Kaoru had never been bold enough to inquire about the future with him before. Perhaps she sensed Kenshin’s swaying spirit, or maybe she’s making plans for her own future, and she is not sure how to include Kenshin.
Kenshin answered her question with a question of his own. “Is it a life with me what you are desiring for yourself?”
Tears filled her eyes as she looked deeply into Kenshin’s violets. “Not for myself,” Kaoru said, “but a life for both of us.”
Kenshin placed his finger upon her cheek and wiped the tear that fell from her eye. The moment was a tender one, a rare event, seldom shared between the couple because of Kenshin’s fear of Tomoe’s appearance from the past within his mind.
“If it was possible to have a life with you Miss Kaoru, I believe it would be a good life.” Kenshin leaned over and with a soft voice he added, “a good life if we are ready for such.”
Kaoru always knew that a time such as this would eventually arrive. A time when she would make her move and tell Kenshin she had always dreamed of being part of his life and how she thought about that from the very first time they met. But the words fail to come, as though they were locked away behind bars of steel.
“Perhaps...” Kenshin paused, sensing Kaoru’s desires of sharing her life with him, but he didn’t want to get cornered into a conversation that will end up hurting her. “...Perhaps, we both need time to make sure it is the best thing for us. After all Miss Kaoru, you are still very young.”
“Why do you always have to bring that up, Kenshin?” Kaoru snapped, crossing her arms in front of her and pouted. “I may be young in years, but I’ve been through a lot with my father, dieing and leaving me with this dojo to run. Then when I met you, so many things happened between us that I feel like I gained many years in such a short span of time! So, please stop with the age thing!”
“Yes, you are right.” Kenshin admitted that Kaoru had been through a difficult time when her father left her alone to cope with running the dojo. She was also right about having gone through so much since she met him. “Forgive me,” he sighed.
“Oh, it’s okay, I have to admit that there were times when I do over react,” Kaoru laughed.
Kenshin laughed along with her and confirmed... “That you do!”

“You dumb asshole, you pushed me down!” Sano yelled at Cho after getting up from the ground outside the nomiya and dusted the dirt from his gi.
“You’re the asshole for pushing me down, ‘Rooster-Head’!” Cho remained where he and Sano stumbled into the street after being bounced out of the nomiya for picking a fight with a patron. “Shit, I think we both fell down together, mainly due to the fact that we both drank ourselves shit-faced!”
“Oh yeah? You think so? Then how come I can still walk?” Sano staggered into the middle of the roadway, barely able to keep his two legs from going off in opposite directions.
After trying a couple times, Cho accomplished to get himself into a standing, but swaying stance, and he also dusted himself off. “You call what you’re doing ‘walkin’? I’ll show you what walkin’ is.”
Cho staggered out to the roadway where Sano was standing and threw his arm around Sano’s shoulder, looked at him straight in the eye and said, “Let’s go to my place, I got more sake there if you’re wantin’ more to drink.”
“Walk me there, because I don’t know where the fuck we are at the moment, and that’s a fucken relief!" Sano caught himself from staggering into Cho. “That means I’m not thinking about Saitou.”
The two men tried, as best as they could, to walk together on the street. They kept running into each other as they put one foot in front of another, barely avoiding passing jinrikishas and carriages. Yet they walk on, shoulder to shoulder. Amazingly they were making progress when they weren’t banging into each other on the way. Loud, they were, but harmless. A scene like that was nothing out of the ordinary of what people normally see on the streets of Tokyo that time of night.
Upon reaching Cho’s place, Sano stumbled again, and Cho stumbled to the ground over Sano. The two men laugh uncontrollably for a minute.
“Shit, I never did imagine you to be a barrel of laughs,” Cho said wiping the tears from his eye. “Tonight wasn’t a total dry duck ass.”
Sano stood to his feet and leaned against Cho’s door and waited for him to let them in. “Yeah, I hate to admit it, but I was thinking the very same thing myself. I’ll probably kick myself in the ass for admitting that to you, but right now, I don’t give a rat’s ass about much of anything!”
The two men stumbled into the small apartment after Cho managed to open the door. They both fell onto the floor and sprawl out.
“What do you mean, ‘you don’t give a shit about anything right now’?” Cho crawled over to a table located in the corner of the room and yanked a sizable bottle of sake from it. “You telling me you don’t give a shit about Saitou right now either?” Cho took a few swigs from the bottle and passed it to Sano who was still lying on the floor.
Sano sat up and pulled a few gulps from the bottle as well. “Now, why the hell did you have to remind me of that bastard?” Sano drowned his last words with a few more gulps of sake.
“I can’t imagine anyone, male, or female, actually loving a guy like Saitou, “Cho shrugged while he began to strip off his dirty clothes. “Besides, I can’t even picture Saitou actually loving another human being. That’s just too scary of a thought!”
“Fuck you, ‘Broom-Head’, may I have you know that Saitou can be a gentle, caring lover!” Sano defended Saitou, even though earlier that evening Sano felt much like punching the consciousness out of him.
“Whatever you say, ‘Rooster-Head'… but by the looks of you right now, it’s hard to believe anyone could find it in themselves to love you either.”
“Yeah, I guess I am pretty fucked up right now.” Sano removed his gi top and tossed it to the side. “If this was Saitou’s place, we’d be in the tub right now soaking and getting all clean and fresh for what comes afterwards.”
Cho cringed, “Please spare me the details about that. I could never figure what the whole guy-on-guy thing is all about. I reckon I don’t want to know unless the whole world was about to blow up so that I wouldn't have to face myself the next day.”
“Before this whole thing started between me and Saitou, I never, ever given a thought about being with a guy in that way either. Actually the only thoughts I had about that stuff were like what you’re saying to me right now.”
“I reckon you have a point, and what you’re saying makes sense, but I can’t see doing anything like that in the near future.”
Cho pulled his futon out from the far corner of the room and spread it out. “Hey, feel free to get some rest here before you head out. You’ll probably end up a dead person if you try to get back to the dojo now, being that you can barely walk.” Cho fell forward onto the futon and instantly started to drift off.
Sano took another few gulps of the sake and set the bottle down, crawled over to the futon next to Cho and collapsed next to him. “Damn you, Saitou… damn bastard…”
A few hours passed while the two men slept. Both of them stir a few times, only to reach for covering as the night turned into the early hours of the morning and forced a change in temperature. Between their snoring and dreaming, the alcohol they consumed that night pulled them into a deep sought after slumber, where they both found refuge from the painful sight they witnessed at the restaurant.
At sun up several series of raps echoed through the quiet apartment, but the two men were dead to the world. They probably wouldn’t have felt an earthquake if one was to take place at that time.
“Cho, are you dead in there? What the hell’s the matter with you?” The door to Cho’s apartment cracked open which let the dim early sunlight in.
Cho and Sano still didn’t respond. Instead, as the door continued to push open, the gap let in the cool, air from the fresh morning. The chill poured right into the room where the two men were laying, causing them to huddle together for warmth under the thin covering they shared, but they continued to sleep.
Saitou, stepped through the door, as he he’d done so many times before in the past. It wasn’t unusual for Cho not to respond to Saitou’s knocks if Cho had been out drinking the night before. Saitou would let himself in and wake the sleeping bachelor, so they could touch bases and Saitou would gather the written reports that Cho was expected to turn over to him.
The light that shown through the door wasn't bright enough to see that Cho wasn't sleeping alone until Saitou stood above the two bodies.
Cho stirred, “Close that damn door! It’s cold!”
“You have a meeting with me,” Saitou barked as his eyes adjusted to the dim lighting at the far end of the room.
“What the fuck?” Sano mumbled as he flipped over on the futon next to Cho. The light coming from behind the towering figure that stood above them caused Sano to squint his eyes into tiny slits. “What the hell is going on?”
Now that Saitou’s eyes adjusted to the limited light in the room, he gazed down at the two seemingly naked young men who were snuggled close together under the covering before him.
