CHAPTER 26
Keisuke had gotten home later than he had planned. It was late Wednesday afternoon and he had only been home a few minutes. He was wandering through the house looking for Takumi. In his hand he held a long thin box. He had noticed the medical papers on the desk in the study. There was a list of test results on them. Most of the results made no sense when he glanced at them. One thing Keisuke did know, Takumi had come home after his latest clinic appointment. He walked down the hallway and noticed the furoba door was shut, so knocked. "Hey, Takumi, are you in there?"
"Hai," was the muffled reply Keisuke heard.
Keisuke tested the knob, and found it unlocked. He pushed the door open and stepped inside. Takumi was sitting in his bathing chair putting his brace back on. Takumi had draped his towel around his neck. The rest of his skin was still damp and deliciously nude. Alarm flashed through Keisuke as he realized Takumi had taken a shower with no one around.
"You know not to shower alone. You could fall, damn it!" Keisuke set the thin box on the sink counter, his temper on the edge of ignition.
"I couldn't wait any longer. Okamoto-senumon-i had them do another ultrasound of my thigh this afternoon. That gel is really disgusting feeling even after they wipe it off. My skin kept crawling until I couldn't take it anymore, Keisuke." Takumi glared up at him.
"That's no excuse. Just because you have exercises to do, doesn't mean you should push your leg too hard, too fast. No matter how bad your skin was crawling, you should have waited for me to get here. You know someone here will help you if you needed it. This family doesn't want to see you hurt yourself. I can't stand it when you're in that much pain, Takumi. Don't take any chances no matter how bad the gel residue bothers you." Keisuke's arms crossed over his chest as he vented his displeasure.
Takumi's hand came up with a forceful fending motion. "Stop, Keisuke. The results showed that the remaining cracks are small enough that I can put some weight on my leg without causing a problem. The tests also showed that most of the stuff they used, that's supposed to dissolve has. I'll definitely be out of the brace a little after Christmas. Okamoto senumon-i said I needed to start treating my brace like a walking cast. He even put it in writing. The paper's on the desk in the study if you don't believe me."
"I already saw it. Still, treating your brace like a walking cast is not the same thing. Your leg's not ready for you to be bare legged in the shower alone. They designed the metal bars in your brace to keep the full brunt of your weight off your bones. Gomen for pissing you off, but you're scaring the shit out of me again. We both know you got damned lucky the surgeon didn't amputate when he realized how many small fragments he was pulling out of your leg and piling on his surgical tray. If not for that new procedure the visiting surgeon knew, you wouldn't even have a right leg, Takumi." Keisuke vented in a rapid fire volley of words.
"Would you stop freaking out on me, onegai?! I'm the one that's had all the stupid blood work to make sure the drug and experimental glue they used didn't have any side effects. I know that if the glue and other stuff the visiting surgeon had with him didn't work, I would have lost this leg. I'm the guinea pig here. Trust me, I was careful so I wouldn't fall, Keisuke! You need to back off already!" Takumi sounded more petulant than angry as he snapped.
Both of them glared at each other for several tense moments. Keisuke changed the subject on a hard snort. "Che. . . . Where the hell's 'Kāsan at anyway?"
"Kāsan Yukiko went out because your 'Tosān called her. I heard her ask him about something involving your family's clinic. When she hung up, she said she had to go to some meeting at the main hospital with Ryuunosuke-san. She said they would be back later this evening. I'm supposed to have something delivered for dinner whenever I get hungry." The teen continued to tighten his brace buckles with deft flicks of his wrist. "Anyway, is that the box with the necklaces you inherited from Sobo-san?"
Keisuke nodded, letting go of the argument before Takumi got irritated. He had missed his quieter partner a great deal because he had been gone overnight. Arguing was the last thing Keisuke wanted. His fright had made him forget to ask if Takeuchi had been found also. It would take a few minutes for his disgruntled lover to be in the mood to let him hold him. Keisuke thought he could get around his annoyance once he saw the pendant he was going to receive. "Hai. This case has your pendant in it. Any word about Takeuchi?"
Takumi's expression darkened. "iie, Itsuke's still missing. I checked this morning with Benika-san. She has the house number so she can call if Itsuke does show up, but the kēsatsu are beginning to think foul play is involved with his disappearance. They asked Benika-san some alarming questions the day before yesterday. . . . Kenta also called looking for you last night. Benika-san told him yesterday about Itsuke's disappearance when he called Itsuke to go do something. He's pissed that you didn't tell him about Itsuke's disappearance. Anyway, I don't want to talk about it any more."
Keisuke had no idea of his beloved's thoughts, and it troubled him. Pushing Takumi for answers would only make his small lover angry, and more resistant to telling him about the things he had learned that made the authorities think foul play was involved. Keisuke fought down his annoyance and growing alarm. Giving his younger lover time to calm down would make it easier to get Takumi talking about whatever he had learned. His obvious depression over his missing brother was adding to Takumi's uneasy looks, and troubled tone. Getting Takumi mind off of the situation was his best option at the moment.
"Will you let me put your pendant on you so it's where it belongs? Or, are you still going to be grouchy with me because I panicked and got over protective again?"
Keisuke opened the box and pulled out the key pendant. Time had worn down the back of it until it glowed smooth and lustrous. The front retained its antique patina and tiny pitted grain from the older, original castings. The designer had worked a small reading scroll into the design of the skeleton key, giving the pendant a vague impression of a hunting bow. Two small gems winked at the top of the key. One was a garnet, the other a pearl.
"I'm not grouchy, lover. You worry way too much about my leg. I remember having to get Okamoto senumon-i to tell you my leg's fine to calm you down after the first time we slept together again. I wish you'd just listen to me and believe me when I tell you I'm fine."
"I've always known you're fine. You don't have to remind me about how good looking you are. I'm the one that told you first." Keisuke teased in a sassy tone with a blatant leer to lighten Takumi's mood.
Takumi chuckled. "Bring it over here. Let me see it."
Keisuke leaned forward showing Takumi how to work the complex clasp. Someone had designed it to remain on its wearer. A three-step process was needed to open or close the heavy gauge precious metal of the intricate triple hinged latch. Only someone who knew where the two tiny buttons were found could remove the heavy chain from which the pendant dangled. Keisuke's family had discarded the old hook clasps and heavy leather cord for the more secure clasps and thick puzzle link chain decades before. Although the style of the clasp had proven unpopular, the difficulty in removing it was a perfect echo of the meaning of the antique pendants his family cherished.
Like the legacy set's lost wax molding technique, the clasps used were unusual, and all but unheard of in modern times. Keisuke understood the nuances of the multiple locking hinges because Sobo had shown him how to open and re close the two clasps. Keisuke tugged the towel off, and put the unusual chain around Takumi's neck, fastening it in place.
Once in place he dropped a fast kiss on Takumi's brow before straightening up again. "That really does look wonderful on you. I'm still in shock over being the one that inherited them, my own."
Keisuke smiled at his smaller mate, happy that he now wore the key pendant, the first part of the legacy he was inheriting. The scroll worked gold and gemstone key slid into place a little below Takumi's collarbone. He smiled as Takumi toyed with it. His younger lover inspected the antique with care. It fit into the lock of the treasure trunk that was resting against the top of his breastbone. It took Takumi's key pendant to open the small trunk that was a cunningly made locket.
"It's beautiful, Keisuke. I was wondering whether these pendants would be girly, but this one isn't. The chain's really thick and complicated like the clasp too. Knowing your family has passed these pendants down through the generations makes my getting trusted with one a huge honor."
"I'm glad you like it. Sobo insisted on putting my pendant on me before she allowed me to leave this morning. By the way, she was thrilled to get your ring size information. I haven't seen her this energetic since before Sofu died."
"Hey, no fair! Let me see yours too." Takumi insisted with childlike excitement.
Keisuke grinned at his younger lover's tone and actions. He pulled the small trunk out from under his hooded shirt and bent forward again, holding it so Takumi could inspect it. Takumi took it in his palm with reverent gentleness, and studied it as Keisuke let his eyes travel over his lover's nude length.
Not so long ago, Takumi would have squirmed, turning bright red at being seen without clothing on. Now, he was much more comfortable within their relationship. He only flushed slightly when Keisuke indulged his enjoyment in staring at his compact, yet hard muscled and well-formed body. At the moment, Takumi was too intent with examining the antique to realize he was even ogling him.
The locket in Takumi's palm was a miniature Shogun tax collection chest. The same sized garnet and pearl on Takumi's key pendant, were strategically placed to enhance the sacred scroll design that flowed along the chest's surface like a wave. Like the key, the chest was neither masculine, nor feminine.
"Wow. This is really complex too. Is there any special meaning to the scroll on both necklaces? It looks like something to read."
"The scroll represents sacred texts. It means having faith in Kami-sama's laws. The chest represents the wealth of the aristocrat. The key looks a little like a hunting bow for a reason too. It represents the commoner my ancestress loved so much she threw away her fortune to marry him."
"Whoa. Guess you're like your ancestress then. You always say you love me so much you can't stand being away from me. You even put up with my being stubborn about being financially independent after all." Takumi smiled up at him.
"Very good observation. Devotion runs in my family, my own. We all got it from her. That's the reason I get to wear the chest instead of the bow shaped key. Sobo knows I love you, the same way my ancestress loved my ancestor." Keisuke's blood was pooling in his manhood over Takumi's state of undress. His childlike curiosity and innocent demeanor was a heady combination that fueled the blond's emotions. Keisuke's possessive and protective instincts stirred as he watched this newest revelation into Takumi's personality.
"This trunk even has a key hole and everything. I didn't know really old jewelry could be this detailed. Have these really been around for four hundred years? It's just, . . . I can't wrap my head around it. I expected something much larger for their age." Takumi looked up into his eyes. His eyes were a rich nutmeg and gold spoked hue.
Keisuke indulged his obvious curiosity. "This chest's front panel is roughly four hundred years old, the same as most of your key. The garnet and pearl in each pendant came from an even older piece of jewelry my ancestress asked the priest to cannibalize when she found out he was creating them for her and her socially condemned beloved. Some things are newer in both pendants because of wear, or damage. The end of the key you have on broke off about one hundred and twenty years ago. Using the same techniques and original mold to recreate the wax key form was how it got repaired. That's the reason the bottom of your key has more of the small grainy impression than the top part."
"How does that work? I mean the repairs and stuff?" Takumi's genuine interest remained in his tone.
"The jeweler takes the required mold and forms a special softened wax into the right shape. Then they encase the wax with wet very fine grain sand. It hardens around the wax. When the metal gets poured into the part where the wax is, it melts the wax away, but can't seep into the sand to lose shape. We have always melted and reused the original gold that was damaged into the locket's repair process, the same as the key's. The chest has more molds to keep track of because it has moving parts that are forged separately."
Takumi released his pendant and lifted his gaze. "Using sand explains the bumpy looking surface." Before Keisuke could reply Takumi continued, "You know, I really missed you while you were gone. I wish I could have gone with you, but I had to get that stupid blood work and other tests done over the last couple of days. Was Sobo-san upset with me for not being with you this time?"
"Sobo's not upset with you at all. She said to tell you she sends her love. She also said for you to take good care of yourself. Sobo had way too much fun teasing me over the last couple of days. It seems I was obviously missing you the whole time I was there. Trying to pay attention to the history when she showed me the family records proved a waste of time." Keisuke gazed down at his enticing lover as his body stirred even more. He wanted to wrap Takumi in his arms and forget about the history of the pendants.
"Your great-aunt mentioned that the family passed these to a same gender couple once before. Did you find out anything about that?"
"Hai. Sobo showed me their story first. I didn't know it, but we'll also inherit a written family record that each generation has kept. We get to put our own story in it once we get the rings and molds. That's part of the legacy's reason for existence, and their meaning to my family. I hope you're not too uneasy about being part of the ritualized exchange in front of witnesses. That's the only way we can claim the rings, record, and molds to complete the set. Sobo thought either Christmas eve, or right after New Years would be good times for passing along the rest of the inheritance. She asked when we wanted to do it so she can finish arranging things for us. So, which would you prefer?" Keisuke could barely wait until the rings were on their fingers. His anticipation was palpable in his question.
A contented sigh escaped Takumi's lips as he stood and wrapped himself inside Keisuke's arms bringing his nude body flush against his. Keisuke felt the welling up of tenderness because he held the man he genuinely loved again. Although they had been arguing a few minutes before, Takumi seemed happier now that they both wore the necklace set. He knew Takumi wanted their love to be acknowledged and accepted as much as he did. The necklaces made their commitment more tangible and solid, even in the face of ongoing opposition by Oyaji-san, and his grandparents on the Takahashi side.
"Sobo Ogino-san is going to lots of trouble for us, Keisuke. I'm happy with any day she wants us there. I'll be out of this brace if she holds it after New Years. That means no possibility of isha san visits getting in the way of you and I inheriting the rest of the legacy."
"You do know that things will be kind of like a wedding ceremony since a forbidden marriage started the legacy. Inheritors always have to give a vow to protect the meaning of love before they get the rings and molds. It's not all that different from a vow to get married. I guess you could say that these necklaces are like an engagement ring substitute in our case. I personally can't wait to put your ring on your finger. Then I can make my family accept that we belong together. I bet you wearing a legacy ring will piss Oyaji-san off again once he sees it. But, I warned him that I'm not going anywhere. Think he'll finally believe me once you have your ring on your finger?"
Takumi smiled up at him. "Let's not talk about Oyaji either. I know you're excited about us wearing the rings too. I'm kind of surprised that you haven't already demanded a picture of me to go in your locket."
"This locket doesn't hold pictures, dear heart. Cameras didn't exist four hundred years ago. The priest designed it to hold hair. So, I'm going after some of yours the very next time you get a haircut." He slipped his fingers through Takumi's damp mane as he spoke.
Takumi chuckled. "Hair huh? Well, that saves me from having to overcome being camera shy, doesn't it?"
"I love you, Takumi. I missed you so much while I was at Sobo's." Keisuke tightened his hold around his smaller mate's waist and shoulders. His head dipped to kiss his mate.
Jewel toned eyes looked up at him, seeming to twinkle with an inner fire. Takumi's lips turned up in a mysterious and compelling smile. "Lucky. I missed you too. You know that it's hard to believe we've only been together for six months. It feels like it's been longer some days. Other times, it feels like it hasn't been nearly that long."
Keisuke felt the observation deserved a serious answer. "You said hai to being mine in mid April. So much happened that I guess it's hard not to feel that way, Takumi. Right when I finally got you over the fear of my leaving, Mogi showed up and screwed things up royally the first week in July. We've gotten used to really talking things through so we understand each other because of getting shot. As much as I hate to admit it, that's the good thing that came from your psychotic ex. We've gotten a lot stronger as a couple, much faster than most. We were focused on knowing each other in the mental and personality departments. That's the biggest benefit of not getting sidetracked with incredible sex I suppose."
"Probably. . . . We've also been living together, so we're getting to know each other's habits, and things like that. If we were only seeing each other on dates, we wouldn't know so much about each other yet."
"True. I'm always finding out new things about you because I get to keep you with me. I even found out that you have an adorable expression when you get excited about something today. And, since you mentioned living together, . . ." Keisuke felt a twinge of unease. As he had driven back from his grandmother's home, his determination to get Takumi and himself into their own place had solidified. There was a consuming need to have Takumi all to himself that drove him to broach the touchy subject. Perhaps if Takumi had missed him half so much as he had missed Takumi, his stubborn mate would not have as strong a negative reaction as he often did to any topic involving finances.
" . . . I know saying this will probably make you mad again, but, . . . I really want you to understand how I feel."
"Nani?" Takumi frowned and worried his lower lip as he tilted his head, looking up at him.
"Kāsan's been a huge pain again this past week. I don't think I can handle waiting until you're out of the brace and working full time to get us out of here. I know you want to get a job first, but, . . . damn it, . . . I can't stay in the same place with Kāsan meddling every day. In my eyes we're married, and having 'Kāsan interfering with us is making me insane, Takumi. I'm really serious about moving us into our own place."
Takumi smiled up at him which surprised Keisuke. He had expected irritation. "I don't blame you for being tired of her harassment. I'm tired of Kāsan Yukiko yelling at you over me. I know she does it because she's worried about my leg getting hurt. Still, I'm frustrated with her too. She had the nerve to make me go to the waiting room so she could talk to Okamoto-senumon-i this morning right after he gave me the test results. She looked embarrassed when she came out afterward. I have a feeling she wanted him to forbid us showing each other how we feel about each other. I'm not comfortable being here if we can't even be together without feeling like we're breaking some rule."
Keisuke felt relief spread through his body as he bent his head and kissed his beloved again. "I don't want you to feel like I'm trying to push you into being dependant on me. That isn't naze I'm asking you to let me move us into our own place earlier than planned, dear heart. I never want you to feel uneasy, or shamed about finances or anything else. I honestly want to be like any other married couple. Let's always share everything we have and are with each other. Is it all right for me to have this selfish desire? I really want to do things, even spend money on you because I really adore getting to spoil you. Will you let me have my way at least on occasion?"
Takumi blinked several times, looking surprised. "Is that how you feel?"
Keisuke nodded. "Hai. I always want to see you happy. I enjoy it on the rare occasions you look delighted, and even surprised with everything I am. I want us in our own home for the same reason. Being able to give you anything your heart desires, is something I need, my own. I know that time with me is the most important to you. I adore that about you. However, . . . sometimes, . . . I want to do unexpected things so I can give you a solid expression of how much I love you. Does my selfish request have to make you so uneasy?"
"Looks like I'm being thick this time. The idea that you were wanting to do things for me because it makes you happy never crossed my mind. I guess my wanting to be your equal in every way I can think of has caused trouble. But, I've never meant it that way. I know I get stubborn. I want to give you real reasons to be proud of me. That way, you'll never feel like you made a bad choice in loving me." The teen looked up through his lashes. His expression was adorably bashful Keisuke thought.
His unexpected answer explained several things. Takumi was admitting his motives. The ongoing argument about Takumi becoming a signer on his trust fund suddenly made perfect sense. It was not shame that caused his younger lover to resist. It was his strong desire to prove himself worthy of being loved. Residual fear that he would lose interest in him if he was too dependant on him was also a part of the problem Keisuke realized.
Keisuke chuckled. "I'm already proud of you. You really are so humble that you're hopeless. I've found another thing about you that's so damned cute I can't help but fall in love with you all over again. Especially with you looking at me like that. That adorable expression makes me want to wrap myself around you even more. Now, can we agree to get our own place earlier than planned?"
Takumi's hand rose, fingers gliding along his cheek as his eyes shifted to a richer antique gold with hints of dark forest green and royal blue. "When do you want to start looking? . . . Or, did you already find a place, and are waiting for the right time to spring it on me?" His voice held amusement as he delivered the gentle caress.
Keisuke twisted his head and kissed Takumi's palm as joy filled him. "Well, I admit I've been doing some research into available places. I haven't actually looked at, or picked anything specific. Is tomorrow too soon to start looking together?" Keisuke's voice held a pleading note he could not hide.
Takumi pulled his head down and gave a light, lingering, and chaste kiss. Keisuke felt the love that his younger mate wanted to convey in the action. "Tomorrow's perfect."
