“Quite ironic, isn’t it?”
“What is?” Leaning against the wall behind him, Hibari crossed his arms against his chest. He stared into the dark-haired man’s eyes, watching as long fingers played with curly sideburns. Half of the other’s face was shadowed by the fedora he was wearing, and he seemed to be contemplating something as his other companions held a discussion behind him.
“That Viper originally worked for the very same board of the mental health facility she is now residing in.” The man pulled a packet of cigarettes from his pocket, fingering the box for a few seconds before slipping them back where they came from. “It was surprising to hear that she found herself in the Varia Wing, but then again it was somewhat expected; she was most peculiar when it came to money.”
The group were standing in the Varia Wing corridor together, peeking through the slot into Mammon’s room. The woman was curled up in amongst her blankets, seemingly fast asleep; Hibari wondered if she would want to see the ones she had worked alongside with, but then again, probably not; they had been the ones to place her here, after all.
“Reborn-senpai!”
Hibari and the man he was talking to – Reborn, as the skylark had always known him by – turned around at their purple-haired companion’s voice.
“What, Skull?” Twirling his sideburns again, Reborn waited impatiently for the other’s reply; he really had no idea what the other was even doing on this board, but at least he made for entertainment when things got boring.
“Fon-senpai and Colonnello-senpai are picking on me again!” Waving his arms into the air dramatically, the purple-haired male drew more and more attention onto himself. “Do something about –“
“- Would you please be quiet?” Another member of the group, a green-haired man with a white lab coat, peeked over his glasses to give Skull a disapproving look. In his hands he held a sheet of paper, details on the patients and their respective medication. “This list is either highly out-of-date, or your staff is lacking on familiarising themselves with new medication that seems to have higher results than this stone-age garbage they’re being treated with.”
Narrowing his eyes, Hibari felt his fingers twitch as he grew more and more agitated with everything about this situation; he wanted to go back to his office where he wasn’t crowded by herbivores, discussing the future of patients he was beginning to doubt he would be able to keep here much longer. “That medication is used because it’s shown better results than anything else they’ve been treated with, herbivore – we wouldn’t have them on it if it wasn’t any good for them.”
“Moving along.” The black-haired male named Fon, and his blond friend known as Colonnello moved to the next room, where they were surprised to find an empty room greeting them. “There is meant to be a patient in here, correct?”
“I have already found somewhere more suited to caring for him.” Changing the subject before the others could delve too deeply and discover that Hibari had done what was not allowed and placed his patient into guardianship, he said, “The loudmouth herbivore is next.”
“Oh, Squalo?” A flicker of unreadable emotion crossed over Reborn’s face before he said, “A facility has been found that will take him; I believe someone will be here to collect him later today.”
Hibari’s jaw went taut at these words, clenching his hands by his side. “Why was I not made aware of this? This is my patient we’re talking about.”
“We’ve all been busy with things as they are, and could not find the time to let you know.”
Stopping in front of Squalo’s room, the group looked in to find he and Xanxus sitting comfortably on the bed, the long-haired man in his lover’s lap as the two kissed slowly, yet deeply. The older male’s hands were wandering up Squalo’s sides, caressing soft silver locks as they went.
Clearing his throat, it was Colonnello who looked away first, uncomfortable with what he was seeing. “As Reborn said, someone will be here to get Squalo later.”
As expected, Lussuria was out of his room and following Ryohei around, and Leviathan, like Mammon, was sleeping peacefully as well, making the visit to the Varia Wing a short one.
“Where is Belphegor?” Hibari hated how Reborn was always on the ball. “In his condition, he should be under lock and chain, supervised at all times if he is not. Why is he nowhere to be seen?”
“He is undergoing rehabilitation with the staff.” Not cowering in the slightest at the stern gazes that fixed on him, Hibari continued on. “His medication has been changed and staff are trying their best to help him.”
Someone snickered from the group before the green-haired male known as Verde made his input. “You really believe someone such as Belphegor can be rehabilitated? You should have him brought back to his restraints now before you lose more staff to his hands.”
“The blond herbivore mimics behaviour, which is why he was put specifically with the Millefiore staff.” Not backing down in the least, Hibari stood proud; if they were going to shut this place down in the end anyway, what was wrong with standing up for his patients? “He mimics behaviour he is most used to, which is violence. Put that with his condition, his trauma, and his survival instincts which go off the second someone so much as looks at him, it makes for a catastrophic concoction. He doesn’t know any better.”
“I don’t understand your reasoning, Hibari.”
“Violence isn’t the only behaviour he mimics; he has been seen several times mimicking Viper’s behaviour, treating our newest patient in almost the exact same manner she treats him. He only knows what he’s personally experienced. If he can experience anything other than violence, we believe he’ll learn to mimic normal human behaviour, even if he doesn’t understand it – he’s smart enough to know how humans work; he just doesn’t know how to behave normally.”
“You’re playing a risky game with him let lose, Hibari.”
“Everyone knows that, and is prepared to accept anything that goes wrong.”
The newcomers looked at each other, talking amongst themselves before they agreed to see the last of the patients. Hibari followed behind them in silence, just glad that they were at least respecting the patients’ privacy by not interrupting them.

“Belphegor, come on.” Bringing their patient into town was not going as Shoichi and Spanner had planned; unable to leave the blond home by himself whilst the two had to do some things in town, they had both hesitantly decided to bring Bel with them, hoping it would stem his boredom; Belphegor was destructive when he was bored.
“No.” Pulling himself away from hands that were trying to tug him out of the back of the car, Bel growled. “No!”
“It won’t be for long.” Shoichi was standing by the car door as Spanner waited patiently by his side. “We just have to get my meds and then we’re going to have some lunch. Don’t you want some food?”
Though food did sound appealing, so did curling up and going to sleep on the back seat. Bel growled again, curling in on himself in his stress; he didn’t like being bothered so much – he valued his privacy and alone time.
“Bring food to the prince,” the older blond demanded. “He will wait here so he can sleep.”
“We aren’t your servants, Belphegor; we’re not going to let you order us around like that.” Shoichi knew to be patient and understanding, but sometimes the Varia patient wore him thin; Belphegor was far more difficult than Byakuran and Rasiel. “We aren’t leaving you alone in the car, no matter what you say, so you have two choices; you can either come with us, behave, and have lunch once we’re done, or you can come with us, misbehave, and not get anything. I’ll even throw in a little extra if you behave yourself today; on top of lunch, you can pick anything in any of the stores that you want.”
Bel’s attention was grabbed by these words, having never been told something like this before. He didn’t fully trust them, knowing it could be a lie to get him to do what they wanted – but what if he didn’t take that chance and they were being genuine, after all? Would it hurt him to take them at face value just once, to see if they would keep their word or not? At least if he was lied to now, he’d know better in the future.
Speaking in a wary tone, Belphegor tensed in discomfort; there was nothing he hated more than letting his guard down around people. “…What constitutes as behaving…?”
“If you’ll do as we say and not protest against us –“
Obscured eyes widened as the blond shook his head, his warped mind taking these words the wrong way. Throwing himself against the back door of the car, he kicked out to keep them away. “No! No!”
Spanner, who could hear the commotion loud and clear, frowned as passers-by sent them odd glances. “Hey, Sho? Would it be easier if I wait with him? You can run in and get everything.”
Shaking his head, the redhead sighed, looking up at his lover. “He’s not going to learn anything if he’s coddled like that; he’ll only think he can keep getting his own way. Belphegor, I am very sorry; I didn’t mean it the way you thought I did.”
“Liar! You’re trying to sell me, aren’t you?!” Bel’s screaming was full of anger and hatred, but there was also fear hidden beneath those two emotions; all the man wanted was to stop being hurt all the time.
“Belphegor, I swear to you that I wouldn’t ever do that to you.” The frown on the younger’s face must have seemed sincere enough to his patient as Belphegor quietened down, trembling and panting in distress as he listened closely. “I should have chosen my words better, and I’m so sorry I scared you. What I meant to say was, just stick close by our sides and don’t wander off, and please don’t pick fights with anyone.”
“…What if they start it, first…?”
“We will deal with it for you, Belphegor; I promise you that. Now, please? Behave, and you can choose something of your liking.”
“…Anything I want?” Slowly untangling his arms from around himself, Belphegor warily pulled himself out of the car.
“Yes. Anything you want.” Shoichi smiled, stepping back so that the smaller male could stand by his side. Closing the car door behind his patient, the redhead clicked the lock button on the remote, listening to the beeping the vehicle made. “We’ll even make this a daily thing; every time you show good behaviour, you can get a reward. Does that sound okay?”
Bel nodded, glaring at everyone around them as he followed the younger two towards the shopping centre. “I need to piss.”
“Can you hold on for just ten minutes?”
Making an agitated noise, Belphegor stomped his foot heavily. “I need to piss now! I’ll go where I stand if you don’t take me!”
“Don’t threaten us, Belphegor; that’s bad behaviour, and we won’t tolerate it.”
“Fuck you!” Reaching down to unzip his pants, Bel snarled when calloused hands reached out to stop him. “Don’t fucking touch me!”
“Aren’t you forgetting what’s on the line?” Spanner was gentle as he pulled the smaller hand away, hoping the older male would calm down. “I guess you aren’t really hungry, then.”
“…” Grinding his teeth together, Bel shrugged; he was quite hungry, and he wanted to know just how honest the two were being about their little deal. “…Fine. I’ll wait ten fucking minutes… But if I piss my pants, it’s your fault.”
“We know, Belphegor; we won’t blame you because we were the ones who told you to hold it.”
“…” Bel grunted, not sure how to reply to these words; he was used to being blamed for everything, no one else ever taking responsibility for the things he knew wasn’t his fault. “…As long as you know…”
Following behind the two, Belphegor shifted uncomfortably; he would just be glad when he got to a toilet.
~~XX~~
Spanner and Shoichi had been patient with the older male’s outbursts and difficult behaviour; they knew it would never change overnight, and they could tell how hard Belphegor was trying for his reward, so they always forgave him and allowed him second chances – it would be unfair of them to punish him for not knowing any different, after all.
Now, after having successfully kept him mostly calm while they sat in the food court and ate lunch, they were taking their patient around the shopping centre so that he could find something he wanted. So far he had turned his nose up at most every store that had been suggested to him, but he quickly stopped when he caught sight of a pet shop, confused as to why so many people were gathered around looking at the animals with smiles on their faces; animals were disgusting, filthy creatures, so why would anyone want to surround themselves with them?
“I’m not getting him a pet,” Shoichi whispered to Spanner, knowing how badly that would turn out for the poor animal. “He’ll torture it for a while and then once he’s bored, he’ll kill it.”
Spanner nodded in agreement, but neither of them said anything to Bel; the man was just watching; no harm done. It was when their patient walked into the shop did they grow worried; if he got his hands on one of those animals…
Now that Belphegor was closer to the cause of his curiosity, he could see the lack of fear in the animals scattered around the store – if anything, they wanted to be close to the humans observing them. Was this normal animal behaviour? Every animal he had come across had been terrified of him, trying to flee at the first chance they got.
“Mummy, I want this one!”
Turning around to look at the enclosures in the front window, obscured eyes glazed over as he became lost in his thoughts, trying to understand why such a little girl seemed so excited about wanting a puppy; what was there to like about a stinking animal? All they did was shit everywhere and stink the house out – so why was everyone in this store looking so fondly at the animals?
“Belphegor, this isn’t the best place for you to be in…” Spanner and Shoichi had approached their patient carefully, knowing not to make any sudden movements lest they startle him and get a violent reaction out of him. “Maybe we should… Belphegor?”
Cocking his head to the side, Bel mumbled something in a faraway tone before he flinched and whimpered, raising his arms as if to shield himself from some aggressive being only he could see. He growled for someone to shut up before he shook his head again, turning his attention back to the little girl.
The young man was confused to see the girl hugging a fluffy brown pup tight, thanking her parent profusely as the dog licked at her face. He then looked to the couple standing next to her, finding them tapping at the glass as they cooed to the puppy jumping at the glass in between them.
Moving to close the distance between himself and the same enclosure, Bel observed the couple for a few seconds more before he copied their behaviour, trying to understand why he felt so numb doing such a thing while everyone else seemed to be enjoying themselves.
Why did he feel so empty trying to do what he could so clearly see was expected of him? He couldn’t explain how he felt; just that when the puppy didn’t even come near him, he felt a strange churning in his stomach, the same one he always got when he felt like crying.
“Belphegor, are you okay?” Spanner came to the smaller male’s side, leaning down to look at him. He was worried when he noticed a few tears sliding down his patient’s face, not sure what could have happened to dismantle him so suddenly. “Do you want to leave?”
Ignoring his psychiatrist, Bel turned around at the sound of two men arguing by the counter. He wiped hastily at his face before his curiosity was piqued by the pet carrier an ununiformed man was holding, wondering why the other seemed so angry.
“I’m sorry, but we can’t buy them off you as they’re not a pet we can sell!” The cashier looked to be frustrated, as if he had been dealing with this for a while now. Belphegor approached, just wanting to see what was apparently trying to be sold to the store.
“I just want them off my hands! They’re fucking pains in the asses and I – hey!”
Belphegor growled as the stranger moved towards him, pulling the pet carrier away as he moved to put ground between them. He tilted the carrier upwards to look through the gate, finding several long-bodied, furry creatures looking up at him.
Cocking his head to the side once more, Belphegor turned to show Spanner and Shoichi his catch. “What are these?”
“Unless you’re going to buy those, give me that damn carrier!” The man who was kicking up so much ruckus moved to snatch back his property, only to have the blond continue to back away.
Opening the gate, Bel reached in. He grabbed the first animal he felt by the neck, lifting it out so that he could see it better. He dropped the carrier carelessly to the ground, not caring for the other animals’ safety; he just wanted to see these strange new creatures properly.
“Belphegor, put it back!” Shoichi felt panicked at the sight of his patient holding an animal, knowing what was most likely about to happen. “It’s not yours!”
Spanner was much more level-headed than his lover, and he could see that, for whatever reason, Belphegor wasn’t a danger right now; he was simply curious. “You shouldn’t hold it like that, Belphegor; hold it with both arms.”
Bel clicked his tongue as he did as instructed, making eye contact with the animal he was looking down at. He was silent for half a minute, just watching the furry creature in his arms, trying to understand why he felt so warm all of a sudden.
This kind of warm was different to how he felt whenever he wanted sex; it was similar to how Mammon and Fran made him feel, as if he knew he wasn’t going to get hurt. His chest swelled with an unknown feeling, and even the voices that always whispered away to him had stopped, leaving him with his own thoughts for once.
For the first time, Belphegor didn’t see an animal as something he wanted to hurt, much less kill; this one in his arms wasn’t what he knew them to be – it was quiet, sitting peacefully in his arms, and it certainly didn’t stink. Belphegor was curious, and he wanted to learn; there had to be an explanation for why he seemed to be the only person who hated animals, right? A reason to why everyone looked so happy and joyful around these creatures when he certainly didn’t feel the same way.
Belphegor always had enjoyed learning new things, so surely it wouldn’t hurt to satisfy his curiosity with an animal he didn’t feel like killing, right? After all, if he did decide he didn’t like it, he could always kill it later.
Finally, looking up to meet Shoichi’s gaze, Belphegor declared, “I want this.”
“Belphegor, I’m not getting you an animal…” Shoichi didn’t want to admit that he was afraid of whatever fate may befall for the poor animal if he agreed. “They’re very expensive…”
“I’ll take forty for it!” The man, who had been glaring at Belphegor on the sidelines, interjected. “Thirty-five! Just take the damn thing off my hands!”
“That’s not very much,” Bel pointed out. “And you said I could have whatever I wanted! I did what was asked of me, now give me!”
“Wouldn’t you want something less… living…?” Shoichi winced inwardly, knowing how cruel he was being in this moment; he had promised whatever Belphegor wanted, and here he was, trying to change the other’s mind.
“No! I want this! Give it to me!”
“Belphegor, you don’t even know what kind of animal it is, much less how to care for it!” Shoichi argued, just wanting to spare the creature’s life.
“It’s either you take that mink off my hands, or it’s going to wind up at a fur farm.”
Shoichi hated the predicament he had found himself in, but… If Belphegor had supervision with the animal, then surely it would stand a better chance with them than at a fur farm, right…? What was the right thing to do here? “…I don’t… Spanner?”
Spanner had pulled his wallet out of his pocket, handing over money to the man without prior warning. He shrugged when he felt his lover turn to stare at him, offering a small smile. “He did his best to behave, and he deserves his reward, Sho.”
The redhead looked betrayed for several seconds before he sighed, giving in. “Alright, then… Help me find some supplies for it, Spanner.”
Knowing he had finally gotten his own way, Belphegor smiled brightly as he followed behind the younger two, watching as they picked out items he had absolutely no idea what they were for.
“So what kind of animal is this, anyway?” Lifting his new pet into the air, Belphegor scrutinised it closely. He sneezed when a bushy tail brushed against his nose, lowering the animal back into his arms.
Shoichi sighed, hoping they had done the right thing. It was Spanner who replied. “That’s a mink, Belphegor.”
“What do minks do?”
“I’m not quite sure, Belphegor; we have lots of research to do about them once we get home.” Turning to smile at his patient, Spanner then added, “What are you going to name him?”
“Hmm…” Falling silent for several seconds as he thought about this question, the older blond soon replied. “Mink. I’m going to name it Mink.”
Both Spanner and Shoichi smiled at this, their moods lifting at the other’s childish innocence; beneath his twisted disposition, Belphegor really was just a damaged kid at heart.

Laying in his bed, lost in thought, Squalo barely took notice of the knock on his door. He sighed once it was pushed open, expecting Lussuria to be visiting him – what he didn’t expect was to find a group of unfamiliar men standing in his room, staring at him with visible dislike in their eyes.
“Who the fuck are you?” Sitting up against the headboard, Squalo didn’t like this situation at all; he wished Xanxus were here, but the man had gone back to sleep not long ago, having had his fill of steak for the next few hours.
“We’re from the Kokuyo Mental Health Hospital.” Stepping forward, a tall brunet locked gaze with Squalo. “You were transferred into our care last night; we’re here to transport you.”
“Fuck off!” Squalo screamed at the top of his voice, feeling anger overwhelm him greatly; if they were going to try and take him away from the only family he had left, he wasn’t going to go down without a fight. “I will fucking kill you if you come anywhere near me! You hear me?! You’re fucking dead!”
“Calm down, or we’ll sedate you.”
Squalo’s temper only grew, especially when he heard someone mutter the word ‘faggot’ in the background. “Fuck off, you assholes!”
Jumping off his bed as they approached him, Squalo was prepared for a fight. He punched and kicked and screamed, and though he had landed plenty of good hits on whom he viewed as his enemies, it wasn’t enough to stop himself from being grabbed and dragged from his room.
“Let go!” Squalo screamed at the top of his voice, struggling to get away as best he could. “Fucking bastards! Get off me! Get off me! Xanxus! Xanxus, help!”
The doors to the other patients’ rooms swung open, some stopping to stare in shock, while others dove forward to help their comrade. Leviathan tackled away three of the men while Xanxus lunged at the ones who had hold of his lover. He roared at them as he pried them off Squalo, but in his anger he was blind to the syringe that was thrust at him. He barely noticed the prick of his skin, and no matter how heavy his body became, or how exhausted he felt, he refused to stop fighting until he dropped to the ground, barely able to move his limbs, having been hit with several sedations.
Leviathan was in a similar state, and the unfamiliar doctors paid them no heed as they continued dragging Squalo off. The long-haired male continued to scream protests, tears running down his face as he sobbed for Xanxus, wanting anything but being taken away from here.
“Oh, dear…” Lussuria, who had finally snapped out of his stunned state, ran towards his fallen comrades. Calling out to the ones taking away his beloved Squalo, Lussuria felt his own tears fall. “Wait! Please, don’t take him away! Please! I’m begging you! No! No!”
Mammon was silent as she walked over to the others. She put a small hand on Lussuria’s shaking shoulder, never judging as her friend cried harder than she had ever seen him cry before. The two stayed with Leviathan and Xanxus until Ryohei had come along and found them, and then they helped the security guard move them back to their respective rooms.
That was the first time Mammon had stayed by someone other than Belphegor’s side, knowing that giving comfort to Lussuria when he needed it most wasn’t going to cost her anything.
