Heartfelt Interference
Chapter Twenty-six
Age Nineteen
It hadn't taken more than a few minutes to get back to your house, even though you were practically trudging along. You knew that crying tended to leave it's mark but you hadn't actually cried for very long so you hoped that taking a long time back would erase any reminder. Rorsh might not have said anything, nor did Felix if he knew, but you wouldn't bet on Nox or your mom giving you the same treatment. You also had a feeling that you'd be wrapped in silky arms from head to toe the moment that Eon found out. Which was probably one of the last things you wanted at the moment.
The moment you opened the door a feeling of suspicion started to bubble up. You mom was at the circular dining table in the middle of the main room with a few things in front of her. Honestly it kind of looked like a back to school kit or something. There was a planning agenda on top of other papers in a three ring binder. In front of that was a very specific identification and a permit; the kind that the government gave out to certain people so that they could legally carry more than the allowed six pokemon. Of course, standard trainers were never granted that privilege. It was reserved for farms like the one you grew up on, research labs, and gyms.
"What is that?" you asked your mom suspiciously as you realized that the identification had your picture on it.
"We've been contracted out to give workshops in the surrounding areas," she said pleasantly.
"And?"
"And since all the rest of here are busy we decided that you're going to be the one going out to do them. Besides, your father thinks it's time that you start to take Ember out to compete. This just kills two birds with one stone."
See, the thing that your rebellious mind reminded you was the fact that they couldn't legally make you take Ember out anymore. You were over the age of majority. However, you also knew that was never going to fly in your house. As quickly as the thought of refusing came it disappeared right back where it had come from. After all, this was your mom you were talking to. And familial loyalty and obedience was blindingly strong.
"I won't make him battle for sport," you said quietly.
"You're just being stubborn. Everyone battles with their pokemon at some point."
"I don't want to."
"What if you get into trouble? How do you think your pokemon are going to feel if you get hurt because they weren't strong enough? How are you going to feel if they get hurt because you don't know what to do in the middle of a fight?"
Your mom's probing questions made you flinch. It was true - you had worried about that often. Sure you trained your pokemon so that they could get stronger but you had never pitted them up against other pokemon. You always found ways for them to train without it being intentionally violent. However, Ember had a tendency to train you in ways that involved making you fear being burnt alive. And you had gotten much better at your own defensive and offensive abilities at what you supposed was a rapid rate because of it. Fighting pokemon got them stronger faster, that much was true, and if you didn't know how to help direct them if a serious fight ever did occur then you would be the weak link. It would be all your fault. That still didn't change your mind about pokemon having to fight for the entertainment of humans. It was just that you weren't ignorant of the fact that you had to pick the lesser of two evils.
"You need to take this seriously. Especially since you can only take Ember."
"What?" you asked, completely surprised about that.
You mom looked at you with a mixed set of emotions. You could see the gentleness of understanding on her face but at the same time there was some frustration as well. Like this was something you should have known but she felt bad that you hadn't realized it all at the same time.
"Most places won't let you walk around with unregistered pokemon. There's a bunch of liability laws and insurance issues with unregistered, technically wild pokemon. It's okay here but...you know you can't have a pack following you all the time in most places."
In other words your mom was pointing out the fact that aside from Ember, none of your pokemon had ever been inside of a pokeball. As such they were not legally yours (like it was okay to own other sentient beings). Which meant that you couldn't be held responsible if anything went wrong. There was also the fact that the economic system surrounding pokemon and potential property damage as well as a few other things didn't function the same way if people were confused if they were domesticated or wild. You tried to imagine Rorsh or Eon out in the wild, having to forge for themselves, and that seemed utterly ridiculous. You could imagine Nox doing that because at times he did seem a bit more wild than the others, but for the majority of things you had a hard time picturing your not so little pokemon fending for themselves all the time.
"So you should probably pack up soon, I wasn't sure what you wanted to bring. The local gym is sending a driver to pick you and Max up sometime after five."
"Wait, Max is coming?" That was news to you since you hadn't heard from the blue haired teen in about a month or two.
Your mom nodded with a sort of smile on her face. She knew that at one point you might have considered dating Max; it had been obvious as you looked back on it. To date he was the only boy that you'd ever really brought over. Which is why you realized that this was probably not going to help matters in the least.
"Yeah, his father is the one who actually helped set this up. It'll be good for us to get out there and expose ourselves. Plus I'm sure the two of you have a lot to catch up on."
You cast your eyes towards a very still, very quiet Rorsh. You could tell that your mother was wisely avoiding the fact that he was in the room as well. She knew just how protective your pokemon were of you at this point which is why she'd brought up failing in battle. One time when Rorsh had been gone, she'd made the mistake of trying to come into your room while you were asleep to put something away...Nox wasn't exactly the most observant when he was half-asleep as the faint bite scars on her forearm could attest to. And while she had enough understanding to see how possessive they were of you, thus part of the reason she refused to look over at the psychic pokemon, it was obvious that she had no idea how deep that rabbit hole went.
"And don't worry your dad and I will look after your pokemon while you're away," she offered.
Oh she had no idea how much of a stink Rorsh was about to put up. You could practically feel your chair shaking already but that might have been your imagination. Nox moving out of your room with a deadly look in his eyes, however, wasn't. Even Eon had looked up from his spot on the couch, though he looked far less violent and much more anxious. His anxiety wasn't helping with the twinge of fear and worry that started to ball up in you. Nor did it help to calm Rorsh down seeing as he was rising up in both of his and his son's 'defense'. You suddenly realized that your mom might have been in some real danger of being assaulted because they thought that she was the one trying to make up the rules as to why they couldn't go.
Suddenly you stood up, pushing your chair back quickly and reached out for both Rorsh and Nox, grabbing handfuls of lilac and black fur and pulling sharply. You looked back over to your mom who sat with a sort of practiced confidence at the table and nodded.
"I'm going to go talk with them."
It was funny how people never questioned how pokemon could understand humans, but always seemed to deny that the opposite could be true. Your entire family and all your mentors didn't think it was strange in the least that you talked with your pokemon like they were humans. And most trainers could understand the general concept of what a pokemon was trying to express just based on body language mixed with vocally and physically represented emotions. But most people had no idea that you heard them, somehow, as though they were speaking your native language. Though right now all you could hear from them was this vague sound of anger if one could imagine a sound of anger that wasn't particularly a gowl. It was almost more like an absence of sound, like the sensation when a predator is drawing near.
You started pulling at Rorsh and Nox, finding that they were adamant about not moving away. And seeing as they both were about half your weight and very intent on not moving, thus using their muscles much more effectively than you, they definitely had the upper hand here. So you tried a different tactic. As you slowly let go of their fur, you pushed your mind out as far as you could. It felt like you were stretching a very tightly spun rubber band - one that was ready to pop you as soon as you let go. And you had a feeling that it was going to sting.
"The last one in my room by the time I count to ten will be banned from sleeping in my bed. Forever."
Your little sylveon was the first one up, before you even started counting actually, and in the room while his espeon of a father and the stubborn umbreon sat there for a moment. You mom watched in slight confusion as you started to count under your breath. It wasn't until you'd gotten to five that you started to move to your room. When you'd gotten down to three both Nox and Rorsh were beside you with their sides moving against any part they could reach. They almost made you lose your balance when they silently fought for the 'right' to pass through your door first. It took a bit of side scraping against the wooden door frame (them, not you) but eventually everyone was comfortably in your room.
And it was then, as you sank down on your bed, that the rubber band effect snapped and hit you right between the eyes. That was the first time that you'd mentally spoken out to all three of your pokemon at once; you were just glad that it had worked to be honest. Timidly Eon wrapped his ribbons around your middle and put his head against your back as he laid on your bed behind you. The other two you made sure were right in front of you so that you could see exactly what they were doing. Besides that you didn't want them to touch you; Eon was the much safer of the lot right now.
"I swear, if you ever attack mom or dad because you're pissy…" you let the threat stand in the air for a moment as you stared at them. "What the hell were you two thinking and where is Ember?"
You'd thought he'd be in the room. Turned out you were wrong. Which probably meant he was up to no good.
"Your mom put him in the little ball," Sylveon said as he rubbed his ribbons up and down your stomach.
Which you realized that you needed to put a stop to if you wanted to concentrate. You knew that unlike the guilty eeveelutions in front of you that Eon didn't mean anything by his touches, which was why you didn't mind it too much. That didn't stop the goose bumps from rising on your skin, however. Your shoulders straightened back up when you saw that Rorsh and Nox once again started to raise their hackles.
You stood up and went towards your small closet, pulling out your backpack full of camping gear. All that was left was to throw some clothes in there and you'd be ready to go. Apparently the more aggressive eeveelutions understood this as you started to stuff a few of your shirts and a pair of your nicer pants into the oversized backpack before moving on to get some things from your dresser drawers. You narrowly avoided the wood slamming your fingers as Rorsh used telekinesis on it.
"You're not going."
Nox and Rorsh ran out together on that one.
"You two don't get to tell me what to do," you returned as you tried to break through his psychic abilities before giving up and moving on to the next drawer. Which you had all of five seconds to snatch a pair of jeans out of before it too slammed.
Nox actually snarled on that one as he put one paw forward. You leveled a glare at him as you felt heat rise to your face. You realized that they probably thought the worst of you right now, that you were going to go off and leave them forever. Not only that but throw on the whole situation with Max coming with you too and you had two very upset pokemon.
"Like hell we can't," Rorsh, while looking physically much calmer than Nox, still had a darkness to his voice that made his thoughts very clear on the matter.
"Excuse me, you're his," the indication towards Eon was very clear, "father. Not mine."
"You're our mate."
You narrowed your eyes on Nox as he teamed up against you with Rorsh. "No. I'm not. And if you keep saying that I'm going to start ignoring you."
Finally you'd broken through Rorsh's ability just enough to grab out some bras and underwear. Now that you had the very basics you could mentally prepare for what was about to happen. Which was something that none of the pokemon in the room would like, at all. Before you could tell them your idea Nox sent out a dark pulse. You had to jump away from the dresser in order to avoid getting hit, which made you nearly fall onto the ground. Eon caught you with his ribbons at the last moment, slowly and carefully setting you back on your feet as Nox growled out.
"We live together. We eat together. We sleep together. We've rutted. You are ours. Our mate. All that's missing is an egg."
Even Rorsh understood that Nox had crossed the line. While his eyes agreed with the dark pokemon he said nothing to support his statements. Neither did he deny them. Which was probably why you'd simply detangled yourself from Eon's intertwining ribbons and moved towards your door.
When Nox made a move to stop you, you reacted out of frustration and pushed him back with a wave of green energy. Unprepared as he was, Nox slid back into your bed as you opened the door. But being the bold hellion that he was, he tried again. This time you threw up a barrier to keep all three of them in. You stopped and bent down to look at him in the face, watching as the blue of his eyes constricted in the sea of red.
"Let me make this clear. I decide what I do. And I was going to tell you how you could come. But now there's no way in hell you're coming. Since I can't trust you not to attack this barrier is staying up until after I'm gone. Which means you're the reason that neither Rorsh or Eon can come with me. And if I find out that when I leave, that any of you hurt anyone because you can't wait for me to come back...I won't come back at all. I love all three of you but I won't let you run my life. If you haven't attacked anyone by the time I come back then we will talk like actual partners are supposed to about what's happening."
You could only hope that you were able to maintain the barrier that long. You'd never honestly tried to do it from a distance. But if there was one thing that you learned during all of this it was that emotions were a great source of power. Today had been filled with a whole lot of emotions.
