Aspirations
Chapter 26
You heard some excited chatter as you sat nearby your office. In front of you was a sweet kale and seaweed salad as well as a couple chicken skewers - basically your lunch. Though you had to bundle up to protect yourself from the chill in the air, you’d decided to eat outside between sessions. The cold air was crisp and there was a certain beauty to the world. It was like the world was taking a breathe; or like it was in between heartbeats. Whatever it was you reveled in it. With a blanket on the picnic seat underneath you of course.
As you picked at your salad, you looked up towards U.A. Nezu had of course done his best to get you an office building as close to the school as possible but it was still a bit of a walk away. A short walk of course.
“What’s he doing here?” You heard someone ask as you nibbled on a rapidly cooling skewer.
“I don’t know. He was here a couple days ago. He left with Endeavor.”
When you raised your eyes up to see what all the fuss was about, it didn’t take you long to figure it out. No wonder people were talking. Hawks was actually walking on the sidewalk, smiling and giving small waves to the people (mostly students) brave enough to start the interaction. Though you didn’t know all the heroes like some students did, those scarlet wings were pretty unmistakable. The rest of his hero costume was bland by comparison.
Huh.
What was the avian hero doing outside of his normal haunts?
The first time you’d seen him, Hawks had been coming to find Endeavor for another team up. Now he just seemed to be out and about. Though if you had to guess, he was probably headed to U.A.
What you didn’t expect was for him to tilt his head up slightly. If you didn’t know any better you’d say he was sniffing the air. After a moment you saw him turn his head; as you continued to nibble on your meal you mentally remarked how the open expression on his face was kind of cute. The sudden smile on his face as he lifted up one of his arms to wave in your direction was, however, confusing. You watched in surprise as he jogged right over, wings ruffling behind him as though annoyed his feet were doing all the work.
“Hey kid, you’re that cute doctor Endeavor visited right?”
You sat down a skewer. Which you noticed that Hawks seemed to track before looking back at your face. “I’m not a doctor.”
He smiled and chuckled. “Right, I remember. Not enough lines on your face for that. So if you’re not a doctor, what do you do kid?”
“Also not a kid,” you grumbled to yourself before taking in a breath to answer him. “I’m hero support, I suppose you could say.”
Hawks eyes widened as he took a seat across from you. He leaned his elbow on the table and then his head in his hands. Apparently whatever you just said had his full attention. You did your best to remain still. Somehow squirming in your seat, even under a look as intense as the current number 2’s, felt like it would contradict your claim to not be a child.
“I didn’t know he was interviewing for more side kicks!” Hawks remarked with a smile.
“…I’m not a side kick,” you replied slowly, a little confused how he could have mistaken you for a hero.
As far as you were aware, you didn’t have that certain panache or confidence that even a sidekick would need to do their job. Especially not one looking to work for the number 1’s agency.
Hawks tilted his head even as he continued to rest it in his hands. You watched as the easy going smile faded as he continued to stare at you.
“Okay. I’m curious —- you aren’t looking to be a sidekick and you don’t look like the kind of girl to weird a wrench…so what kind of support are we talking here?”
“Rude,” you remarked as you stared at him.
Hawks lifted his head from his hands, pulling back. You watched his wings shuffle over themselves as he looked at you with surprise. Ever so slowly the serious mask you wore cracked to reveal the teasing smile underneath. You laughed at the look on his face, pulling off a piece of chicken from your skewer and eating it. Again you noticed that he seemed a little too attentive to the food you were putting in your mouth. Considering the time of day it was possible that the pro hero in front of you was probably hungry.
Wordlessly you offered the skewer of chicken you hadn’t eaten off of yet to him. He took it before common sense kicked in, telling him to at least visibly examine the food he was offered.
“I’m a masseuse,” you offered the blonde in front of you an explanation. “Hero work is physically taxing right? I help to make it easier to cope with day in and day out.”
His surprise stayed on his face though the young hero did lean back in with a hint of interest on his face. “That doesn’t really explain why Endeavor came all the way out here though. There are plenty of massage parlors in the city. Why come all the way out here? Other than the fact that you’re so darn cute.”
You tucked your head in as you blushed in embarrassment. Somehow having someone directly call you cute was more embarrassing than what you did for a living. Then again, attraction was actually a deficit in your line of work as you’d been finding out (all thanks to Aizawa). So you tried to ignore that while working. Tried being the key word sometimes. As you fought back the embarrassment you watched as he downed the skewer of chicken in just a couple of bites. The guy didn’t waste any time devouring what was in front of him, in contrast to your habit of eating slowly.
“I had a prior connection,” you said quietly. “And the fact that I was cleared to work at UA probably gave him confidence in my capabilities.”
“You work at UA Huh?” The winged hero mused. You could practically see when the light bulb went off in his head. “I heard a rumor the school hired a couple more people to help out with the students. a bit unorthodox but that’s what the school is known for. So you give the kids massages? Let me guess - that connection was with his son right?”
You smiled tightly neither accepting or denying his assumption. Hawks’ smile seemed much more genuine as he continued on in a joking tone.
“He has a thing for his son,” Hawks joked. “I never knew familial pride could get so intense till I met him.”
“He’s his father and Todoroki is doing pretty great. It’s only natural.“
“Is it?” Hawks questioned slightly as he sat the stick down. Picked clean. “I suppose. Well if Endeavor thinks you’re doing a good enough job to make the trip all the way out here, I might need to try you out.”
Working with feathered wings would be a new one for you. But that almost seemed fun. They were really pretty and it’d no doubt be interesting to check out how his back muscles were formed to make them useful appendages. It’d be a nice change of pace from all the studying and avoiding you’d been doing these last couple of days.
“Besides getting rubbed down by a cute girl would be worth the time it takes to get out here.”
“…dirty old bird,” you muttered out before realizing that you’d just said that aloud towards a prospective client. A very well liked hero at that.
“Old?” The blond laughed as he leaned back. “That’s new.”
“How old are you then?” You asked, trying to recover from your fumble and pretty much failing at it epically.
“Don't you read the tabloids?” He returned your question with one of his own.
You shook your head no as you poked around what was left of your salad. You could see the start of a misty cloud being formed by your breath as the temperature started to drop.
“Why not?” Hawks asked. “If you’re in hero support, keeping up with the latest hero gossip and numbers should come with the job description.”
“Because gossip isn’t fact. And numbers aren’t people, heroes are,” you answered. “Unless it’s data I need on my client to do my job, information I’d rather get from them, then I don’t pay attention to the gossip.”
Your answer made the pro hero go quiet for a moment. Though judging by the look on his face as the seconds ticked on you were pretty sure it was a good type of quiet.
“I can see why UA hired you. Heck if you weren’t already taken I might have tried to recruit you too and I haven’t even seen if you’re any good.”
“Oh I’m good,” you said off handedly, finally picking more chicken off and eating it with a bite of your salad.
“I don’t doubt that,” he said with a wink, making you rethink your words and find that they could have been taken as an entendre. Hawks stood up and backed away from the table. “It’s been fun but I had a meeting with the Principal of UA. See you later kid.”
As he left you stabbed at your salad, unaware that the pro-hero actually heard you as you moodily mumbled out, “Not a kid.”
