Chapter Twenty-Six:
September 26th, 2017:
7:00 PM:
Old Family Grudges:
Having arrived at the Christale City airport, the group decided to unwind from the long train ride and eat before their next destination. Shiro walked up to the glass window and bounced up and down with excitement.
"Whoa! So that's what an airplane looks like up close!" Shiro's eyes lit up. "That's amazing. I've always wanted to ride on one!"
"Amazing and expensive," Christina grumbled. "Why are you so fascinated with airplanes? Can't you fly?"
"Most Mages can work with enough practice." Shiro rubbed his head. "I can jump super high and hover in the air for a while, but flying isn't my forte just yet. I've always wondered how humans can fly without Magic."
"You've never ridden on a plane before?" Cassandra asked with widened eyes.
"….No, why?"
"Here, take some of this when you get on the plane," Cassandra handed some pills to Shiro. "Dramamine is supposed to help with motion sickness."
"…What," Shiro blinked. "but I handle the train ride just fine? How bad can planes be?"
Cassandra wordlessly wandered her gaze to the left, and Shiro followed her line of sight to the guy throwing up in the trash can.
"…Needless to say, you don't want to end up like him. Just in case."
"Duly noted," Shiro dryly replied.
"Shiro! Hey, Shiro!" Alyssa suddenly called out to him.
"….Yes, I'm Shiro."
"They have a famous ice cream stand, filled with different things worldwide," Her eyes gleamed as she leaned in. Shiro blushed as she got a bit too close to his personal space. He still remembered the soft thighs he rested on were still fresh in his mind. "And the best part, it's made by professionals, so it's all homemade."
Shiro's face turned serious.
"Do they have mint chocolate?"
"…Sundae," Alyssa confirmed with a peace sign.
"What the hell are we waiting for!?" Shiro grabbed her hand. Alyssa's face turned red in surprise. "Airports are amazing! Who the hell wants to ever leave this place?"
"Did you forget we're searching for treasure! We don't have time for a quick break!" Christina seethe.
"Well, we still have three hours till our flight. We did arrive a bit early," Cassandra muttered. Though her thoughts were more on Shiro and Alyssa. "Maybe it's just my imagination, but those two seem close lately."
"…Lady Cassandra, are you perhaps jealous of Alyssa?" Christina asked.
"W-what!" Cassandra was flustered. "Me? Jealousy of Alyssa never."
"You were getting pretty anxious you couldn't spend any time with Shiro on the train." Christina didn't let up.
"…So it's wrong now to be worried about my friends!?"
"You were glaring at Alyssa the whole ride."
"You're totally in love with the brat." Puck grumbled as he held everyone's suitcases. "Why am I doing all the grunt labor!"
"Ohh, I must be a terrible friend, jealous of my friend." Cassandra moaned into her hand. "Was it that obvious?"
"Yes!" Both Christina and Puck agreed.
"Okay, I get it," Cassandra groans, "I'll be more mindful next time! Let's find our flight gate already!"
While Cassandra and the others left to find their flight gate, Shiro and Alyssa sat at a table stand, waiting for their Ice cream. Shiro was writing in his journal, keeping track of their progress.
"Hey, Shiro."
"…Yes, I'm Shiro."
"I think Cassandra hates me." Alyssa sniffled.
"Huh?" Shiro blinked and stopped writing in his notebook. "Well, that's random. Where did this come from?"
"Well, I kept trying to explain the incident with the assassin on the train. But all I kept receiving was a huff, followed by the cold shoulders." Alyssa whimpered. "She might be mad at me for allowing that assassin to trick us."
"We didn't get tricked by him," Shiro hummed. "Though, I guess we didn't try to escape him either."
"…What should I do?"
"Well, first, making many assumptions isn't going to solve anything," Shiro stated. "You might just ask if something is bothering her. Let's call her over. Hey Cassandra!"
"…!" Shiro and Alyssa both fell silent as the group was no longer in a spot waiting for them.
"…They left us."
"Yes, I can see that clearly," Shiro spoke dryly.
"She hates me." Alyssa nearly got ready to cry.
"What did I say about making too many assumptions!"
"Shiro! Order for Shiro! Your sundaes are ready!" The shopkeeper called out.
"…Yes, I'm Shiro!" Shiro stood up and grabbed his order. Alyssa and Shiro sat silently, enjoying their Sundae. "Well, look at the bright side."
"What can there possibly be a bright side to all of this?" Alyssa asked.
"…We can say Christina for certain hates my guts." Shiro sighed. "I'll never understand that girl."
"Now that's making way too many assumptions."
"Like hell, it isn't!" Shiro snapped, slamming his hands on the table, not that he was aware. His pen fell to the floor…and as they were arguing, a sniper aimed at Shiro from a distance.
She had a dark skin tone, long brunette hair, and deep amber eyes. She held her breath steadily, aiming her weapon.
"Target sighted," She muttered.
"Aim lower about thirty degrees. Wind trajectory fifteenth miles, no resistance." The shadow behind her spoke. "Right there is perfect, Rika! Fire, now!"
"Sayonara, child of Zenrus," Rika slowly pulled the trigger…and fired at Shiro.
"That's weird. That's where my pen is?" Shiro blinked and saw his pen on the floor. "Oh, must've knocked it over."
Unbeknownst to Shiro, a bullet fired over his head as he bent down to pick up his pen. While he didn't hear the bullet, he did feel a gust of wind on his neck. Shiro shivered.
"Ugh! I just sense a small disturbance in the force."
"Are you sure it's not brain freeze?" Alyssa asked. Shiro looked at her, confused."
"You know, from eating too much ice cream?"
"…Your brain can freeze from this stuff!" Shiro exclaimed.
"…It's a metaphor," Alyssa spoke dryly.
"…O-of course, I knew that!" Shiro lied. He rarely ate ice cream. So, how was he supposed to know about that phrase?
Rika's eyes twitched on the balcony as she missed her shot, and the shadow behind laughed hysterically.
"Pfff, and you even said the whole Sayonara bit and everything. How lame!"
"Grrr!" Rika growled in frustration and shot the shadow again.
"Yeow! My other eyes!"
"Quit you! I'll kill him with my next shot." Rika hissed.
This is Rika Kujou. Grade-A assassin, while she's very good at her job….She, unfortunately, has terrible luck. She adjusted her rifle only to find Shiro and Alyssa had disappeared.
"What! They moved!" But where had they run off to? Rika scanned the crowd and found them walking to the gate. "Over there! You won't escape from me!"
"So, as I was saying before. I don't think Christina hates you. But she is overprotective of Cassandra and me. I remember a time when I was being bullied, and Cassandra and Christina, who were strangers to me, stepped in and protected me." Alyssa hummed, happily recalling the memories as if it was yesterday.
"No way! You were bullied!" Shiro exclaimed.
"Several boys had tried to ask me out, and the popular girls didn't take the news too kindly. One thing led to another. And I was harassed throughout high school." She sniffled. "I couldn't fight back. I felt so weak and defenseless. Without Cassandra and Christina being there for me, I don't know where I'd be without them today."
"….It must be nice to have friends," Shiro spoke in a monotone. He recalled his time in Mundus. Everyone stayed clear away from him. To the people, he was a problem child. He wasn't bullied per se, but he hurt all the same. He stretched his hands, but no one accepted them. Until a hand reached out and pulled him forward, his brother Leon accepted him. He remembered playing with Leon, catching up to him, and calling out when Caleo Ardeo attacked.
….Caleo Ardeo.
Shiro's eyes darkened as he clenched his fist. Everything was his fault! If it wasn't for him. He might still have a family. If only he wasn't so weak! He might…he might-
"Shiro!?" Alyssa called out to him in concern. He blinked and looked at her with confusion.
"Huh?"
"Your ice cream is melting!"
"Gyyya! Not my Sundae! It was innocent!" Shiro exclaimed. He fell to his knees in an overdramatic fashion as he threw away his melted ice cream.
"Shiro? Are you gonna be?" Alyssa was hushed by Shiro's hands
"Silents! I must grieve!" Shiro silently cried
"Perfect!" Rika exclaimed. Aiming her rifle at the stationary Shiro. "I won't miss for sure like this."
"Come on, you big oaf!" Alyssa rolled her eyes and offered her hands. "I'll pay for your replacement since you treated me earlier."
Shiro sprung forward like an uncontrollable rocket. He grasps Alyssa with sparkles in his eyes. He gracefully dodged another bullet Rika had fired without even being aware of the attempt on his life. Rika was baffled, and her eyes twitched madly.
"Really!?"
"I don't mind." Alyssa flushed red. "It's the least I can do for all you've done.
"Thank you so much, Alyssa-senpai!" Shiro grinned as they walked back towards the ice cream shop.
'I didn't think about it before, but Shiro called me Senpai when we first met. He said it was used as a sign of respect between classmates.' Alyssa's face was heating up from embarrassment. 'Does that mean he thinks highly of me?'
"Hey, Senpai?
"Gyhhaa!" Alyssa yelped in surprise as Shiro closed in on her face. She was too caught up in her thoughts to notice the worried look on his face. "Y-Yes!"
"If anything like that happens again, tell me about it." Shiro's eyes darkened. "I'll be more than happy to deal with a few bullies."
"Don't worry about it." Alyssa smiled. Her face was flustered at his concern. "It's all in the past now. But I appreciate you caring about it so much."
Silence fell between them. Alyssa swallowed nervously as she found the courage to ask her next question.
"Hey, Shiro?"
"..Yes, I'm Shiro?"
"D-do you like popular girls?"
"…"
"…"
Time seemed to have halted. Alyssa felt the anticipation crawl through her skin. She felt embarrassed when Shiro turned around and stared at her with a baffled expression.
"…Ehhh!?"
….
..
.
Meanwhile, not too far from Shiro and Alyssa. Rika had found herself pacing back and forth, seething at her recent failure to kill. It wasn't much longer until he left for his flight. She needs a sure way to kill him for good.
"I've never felt so humiliated in my life!" Rika growled. "How can one person be so difficult to kill? It's no wonder Gin couldn't deal with him."
"Bwaha! I want to know how to stay a top-ranked assassin when you can't even aim!?" The shadow howled out. "You should just stick with a direct approach."
"The hell do you think I'm doing right now!" Rika shouted at her companion. But because he was a shadow. The onlookers just walking by only saw a crazy woman shouting at the wall. Rika was flustered when she realized she was tricked and turned away with a huff.
"…I hate you."
"But you love working with me~" The shadow sang. He fell silent the moment Rika threatened him with a knife. "Sorry, I'll be quiet now."
"I can't possibly fail this time," Rika muttered. "I'll stake my own life on it."
"But wait, aren't you immortal?" The shadow was Ignored as Rika dashed towards the couple. "….Ah, whatever, I'm sure she'll be."
Back to Shiro and Alyssa, time seemed to have resumed. Shiro rubbed his temples, someone resisting the urge to sigh. He had to patiently try to understand Alyssa's question.
"I'm afraid I didn't understand the point of your question. What do you mean by liking popular girls?"
"Like Cassandra…F-for example." She stuttered.
"Do I like Cassandra because she's popular?" Shiro reaffirmed her question.
Alyssa reluctantly nodded.
"No. I don't. Liking someone because of Social standing is a stupid notion that needs to die." Shiro scoffed.
Much to her relief, she could relax, knowing Shiro wasn't the kind of pet to take advantage of Cassandra. But that didn't quite answer her question.
"Then what is your relationship with Cassandra? With us?" She added.
That made Shiro pause and think. The obvious answer to him would be friends, right? But he didn't outright go to them seeking friendship. They came to him in hopes of seeking treasures from his planet. Cassandra also confessed to him, but that didn't mean they were dating. What was their relationship?
"…Well, I don't-"
"I found you, child of Zenrus!" A voice boomed in the distance.
A blur shot passed the crowd and charged straight at Shiro and Alyssa. Shiro saw the dark-skinned woman coming after him. And with his quick thinking, Shiro shoved Alyssa to the side and dodged several slash strikes from the assailant.
"Woah, Woah, Woah! Why do I attract all the crazy people who want to kill me!?" Shiro shouted.
"Accept your fate and die!" The woman shouted, throwing several punches that Shiro easily countered. Shiro grabbed her wrist when she closed in and lifted her over his shoulders. Rika was baffled by the sudden counter move, but she used her weight to ground herself before she could hit the floor. Rika spun around and slammed the back of her heel on the side of his head with a roundhouse kick. Sending Shiro flying into the wall.
"Shiro!" Alyssa shouted.
"Ugh! Damn! She's good." Shiro groaned as he rubbed his neck.
"Now die!" Rika grabbed her knife and charged at Shiro. However, before she could stab Shiro, a hand grabbed her wrist, and a loud whistle blew in her ear.
"Alright, that's enough horse playing!" A stern voice commanded. Rika was yanked up in the air, causing a sharp pain in her hand as she dropped her knife. Shiro recognized the uniform the man was wearing. He was a security guard, and he was a tall Puck…really tall. So tall, in fact, he easily threw Rika over his shoulders and yanked Shiro by the collar. "You two are coming with me."
"Unhand me! You big oaf!" Rika demanded. However, she could not escape the security guard's grasp on her. She pointed at Shiro. "I must slay this fool for the trouble he's caused!"
"But I haven't even done anything!" Shiro whimpered. Their plea went unheard as they were dragged into the security guard's office.
Alyssa stood dumbfounded by the events that transpired.
"Oh dear, what should I do now?"
Shiro and Rika sat patiently in the security guard's office, waiting for the verdict to be passed on them. The guard looked unamused at the situation in question. He looked back and forth between Shiro and Rika and his paperwork and leaned back with a tired sigh.
"Well, considering this is your first violation, there are no previous records of public misdemeanors. I'll let you off with a verbal warning." The security guard twirled the knife in his hands. "That being said, this is none of my business. But ma'am, there are more subtle ways to handle a breakup than violence. If you're going to fight, make sure it's handled privately."
"Breakup?"
"He thinks we're having an affair," Shiro whispered.
Rika turned red, seething with anger. She slammed her hands on the officer's desk.
"We are not dating! His family is my mortal enemy! I would never date such a degenerate loser in a million years!"
"Now that's just rude!"
"I see, " The officer nodded. He looked rather unconvinced. "Be that as it may if that's all you have to say. You're free to go. Try not to cause any more trouble."
The officer shoved the two out of his office. And Shiro and Rika just stood next to each other in silence. Rika's eyes twitched madly while glaring daggers at Shiro. He tried his best to hold in his snickering.
"...I don't think he believed you, darling," Shiro teased. He effortlessly dodges several of her punches. "Woah! Can you at least know why you're trying to kill me!?"
Rika managed to strike Shiro's abdomen. He nearly hunched over from the pain, only to sense something was off.
"..No way, my magic!" Shapiro gritted. "Spirit shackles."
"Don't underestimate me just because I'm a woman," Rika spat. "I'm still an assassin. I've tied down your ability to use Magic. You will do as I command if you ever hope to be a mage again."
"What do you want from me?" Shiro hissed.
Rika let go of his stomach and walked away. Shiro followed her wrist, which had a shackle around it. And along invincible chain trailed back to his Magic core.
"If you want an answer, follow me to the roof," Rika smirked. "Otherwise, if you disobey, I can always kill off your friends. I have this entire place hostage."
Shiro frowned as he watched the woman walk away freely. While he felt threatened by the woman's actions, he couldn't help but feel some of her emotions. Especially now that he's shackled to her, she feels desperate. Unlike Chao, Gin, or hell, even Xyaqom all carried themselves with dignity. But not her. What a strange assassin.
"Shiro! Hey, Shiro! Over here!"
"Yes, I'm Shiro." Shiro blinked when he saw Alyssa running up to him. "What's wrong? You look exhausted."
"Of course I am!" Alyssa exclaimed. "After that assailant that attacked us, how can you be so calm!?"
After several assassination attempts on his life, this one was rather lackluster, to say the least. By God! Did that mean he enjoyed fighting to the death? Perhaps that was a signal he needed to find a hobby?
"I guess I'm used to being close to death at this point." He muttered.
"…Shiro," Alyssa whispered. He ruffled her hair with a reassuring smile.
"Don't worry about it," Shiro smiled. "Why don't you go on ahead and wait for me with Cassandra and the others. I'll catch up with you guys in a bit."
"Huh?" Alyssa looked worried as he walked away. "But where are you going?"
"To settle some unfinished business."
"Honestly, I can't tell if you're just an idiot or if you have a death wish for being here alone."
Shiro smirked at his assailant's comment. The fact that he was still alive as he walked through the airport's rooftop. Was at least a solid indicator that he could escape if he played his cards right.
"Not that I could run away since you have my magic hostage," Shiro tugged on the shackle chains connected to Rika.
Shiro scanned the rooftop, waiting for a possible ambush. They were alone. So like he thought early, she was working solo.
"Don't mock me! You could easily escape if you wanted to," Rika exclaimed.
Sure he could...he chose not to.
"Right back at you," Shiro scoffed. "You could've easily killed me if you wanted to."
Rika scowled. She hated questions within a question. Especially one that she already knows the answer to. She may be an assassin, but she still had her pride as a mage. And that pride she refused to let go of. And Shiro was the same as her.
"And you still showed up alone despite that fact. You're a Moron!"
"Better to be an idiot than a heartless monster who only cares about hurting others."
Rika snarled. "A child of Zenrus has no room to complain after what your family did to me! What can a weakling like you hope to protect without Magic!"
"I don't care if you insult me," Shiro glared at her. "But don't mock the pride of mage when you use a cheap imitation spell like this!"
Shiro grabbed the Spirit shackles and tugged Rika forward, launching her.
"Eh! Hold on just a sec!" She panicked.
"A mage can't fight without Magic, and who decides that!
The moment Rika was within range, Shiro struck her with his fist with all his might, sending her flying across the rooftop.
"Don't underestimate a battle between two Mages, ya fool!" Shiro spat.
"You brute!" Rika groaned, rubbing her cheeks. "Whatever happened to the chivalry code of honor? You're a young male. You're supposed to be hot and bothered by fighting an attractive woman like myself."
"Why should I follow some boring old cliche trope like that? I'm not some loser Rom-com protagonist. I have a refined taste for older women, and you don't even make the top ten on my list," Shiro exclaimed. "Stop fooling yourself, lady. You're not that attractive."
Something inside Rika had snapped.
"Oho!" She seethed. "I don't care."
"Come again?"
"I don't know what Lex wants anymore!" Rika replied angrily. "I don't care about my job or being a mage. I still have my pride as a woman. And I swear I'll kill you!"
Rika held her left hand up and unleashed a pulse of energy that pushed Shiro several feet back. Shiro's eyes widened as Rika summoned several giant icicle shards surrounding her.
"Oi! You gotta be shitting me!" Shiro cursed under his breath.
"Sagitta Magica: Series Glacialis!" Rika fired her Magic directly at Shiro. "Die!"
"A spell without an incantation!?" Shiro exclaimed, dodging several arrows fired in his spot.
"What's wrong!? You were so cocky earlier. You said you would defeat me without using Magic. I'd like to see you try. A mage without Magic is worse than being a human!"
Shiro continued circling Rika while simultaneously dodging her relentless ice arrows. Rika ceases firing the moment Shiro disappears within the misty field. Her attack ended up hindering her vision. She shivered from the cold temperature.
"Kehehe! You're right. A mage without Magic is ultimately useless."
"Impossible," Rika's eyes widened as three Shiro's suddenly charged at her from the mist, right above her. "Cloning Magic! But I sealed your Magic with Spirit shackles!"
Rika realized what she said and saw a fourth Shiro, standing idly by with mist. Copying what Shiro did earlier, she tugged on her chain, hoping to draw him forward. But the Shiro in front of her faded into nothing.
"No way!"
"But Earthlings have been fighting without Magic for more than a millennium. With nothing more than the power of science!" The real Shiro spoke as he charged forward and landed a solid right hook upon Rika's face as she fell to the ground.
"B-but how!?" She groaned weakly.
"Hypothermia," Shiro explained while tying up her hands. Her eyes widened as she realized where he was going. "Magic is great and all. It can heal wounds, cure burns, paralyzed, poison. But for disease, it can only be cured through medicine-through science, in other words."
"Even after all these years of seeking against your family, I still lost to a child no less," Rika whispered in frustration.
"I'm nineteen years old."
"No wonder I couldn't beat you. Are you some kind of prodigy?"
"...Sure, let's go with that." Shiro lied. There was no way he could admit to a stranger that he was an apprentice mage or the fact he was bottom of his class.
"Well, if you're going to finish me off, do it while I'm at my weakest. Child of Zenrus." Rika laid down and closed her eyes, ready to accept her fate.
"I refuse."
"Accuse me?"
"You're not a bad person. I can tell that much, so I refuse to kill you."
"How idiotic can you be!?" Rika scowled. "I tried to murder you today. I was even willing to risk this airport. So why won't you take my life as payment for my mistakes?"
"Yeah, you did try to kill me." Shiro nodded.
"So why!?"
"You didn't involve anyone else. You were willing to, but you didn't," Shiro said. "I'm sure that if you went all the way, I wouldn't have any answer besides death. That's why I'm not gonna kill you."
Rika was stunned by his kind words. No one had ever viewed her as a good person before. She was ridiculed, harassed, and rejected by her own people because of her appearance. But Shiro said that she wasn't a bad person. He acknowledged her existence.
"Should it really be okay for me to live? Despite that, all I did?" She whispered.
"We can't help how we were brought to this world. But we weren't born in it to be alone." Shiro shook his head and squeezed her hands. "It's okay to live. I'll say as many times as possible."
And so, for the first time, Rika had cried into the arms of a stranger she had just met.
"He's late," Cassandra paced back and forth. The look of worry was undoubtedly plastered all over her face. It's been over an hour since the group separated, and Shiro and Alyssa had yet to contact them. Christina and Puck sat idly by, though they were not quite pleased with the strange looks they received from the other people passing by.
"You're gonna grow wrinkles if you keep worrying about the young lad," Puck remarked.
"Then why pray-tell, aren't you worried about Shiro!?" Cassandra snapped around. "He's your employee as well. Assassins are targeting him to get to me. Yet, you don't care that life is constantly in danger!"
Christina hummed, seemingly in agreement. Though she didn't care about Shiro's well-being either way.
"The kid can handle himself. He's tougher than he looks." Puck dodged the question.
"But aren't Mages physically weak?" Christina chimed in.
"True," Puck chuckled as he remembered when Shiro couldn't even lift a fifty-pound crate. "But for what he lacks, he makes up for it with his spirit. Otherwise, he would never have survived this long on his own. Not against that assassin, and certainly not against Cal-"
Pick bit his tongue, almost forgetting who he was talking to.
"Cal? Who?" Cassandra asked.
"No, never mind." Puck shook his head. "If Shiro hasn't mentioned it by now, forget I said anything. That's something personal for him to say on his own."
"Cassandra!" Alyssa sprinted over to the group in a panic. "Thank goodness you're okay."
"Of course I am?" Cassandra said. She looked at her friend with concern. "Why? What happened with you and Shiro? Where is he anyway?"
"It's terrible, we were attacked by an assassin, and he hasn't come back yet!"
"What did you say!?"
My story began a little over a hundred years ago when the two great nations, Highland and the Lorance region, had yet to establish a military presence. Mundus was divided by its ethnicity. It was about survival of the fittest. And those considered weak were left to die."
Shiro nodded and listened along while healing Rika. She had dropped her spirits and allowed Shiro to regain his Magic. He responded kindly by punching her right in the face.
"That was for threatening my friends!"
'Bam!'
Rika responded with her fist as well. Landing a solid uppercut on Shiro. "Will you listen before acting like an idiot!"
'Bam!' Shiro struck her back. "Yeah, just because I agree to listen doesn't mean I can't be mad at you!"
And this back and forth exchange with their fist went on for a while….
Eventually,
"Ow! Ow! Ow!" Rika cried into his lap. "You're such an ass! Is this how you normally treat a woman!?"
"Only to those who try to kill me," Shiro spoke dryly. "Now hold still. I can't heal you if you keep moving around."
"Now you're super nice to me!?" Rika muttered. "You're weird, you know."
"So, in short," Shiro ignored her comment. "You're an evil witch that lived for over a hundred, and because of the crimes you committed-"
"Committed is such a strong word. I didn't choose the life of Mage, to begin with."
"Not that it matters," Shiro corrected. "You were caught in the act by my old man."
"Zenrus!" Rika spat venomously.
"The old geezer placed a curse on you to punish your crimes, tying your life force to our blood."
"Essentially, I'm immortal so long his blood runs through your veins," Rika explained. "I can't die by any natural means. Disease, old age, gunshot to the head. I've tried them all."
"And yet you lost to someone who's not even a full mage," Shiro snarky replied. "And be treated by that same target. How does that make you feel?"
"Ashamed! I can't even return to Lex until I acquire your head!" Rika groaned into her hand. "Which means I won't be paid!"
"Then don't return to him," Shiro spoke softly.
"Huh?"
"So long as you promise to give up the life of an assassin, I can provide you a job," Shiro offered. "One worth far more than what Lex could ever pay you."
"Go on," Rika sat up and slowly leaned forward, staring at him intensely. "I'm listening."
Shiro smiled, "Perfect timing."
The door to the roof slammed open, scaring Rika slightly. Cassandra stepped out looking like she had run a marathon. She was ready to kneel over.
"Thank goodness you're safe. I was looking all over for you."
"Meet your new boss," Shiro nonchalantly waved off her concerns. "You'll be working underneath her as a new employee, be sure to get along now."
"Eh?!"
"Huh!?"
Cassandra and Rika stared at each other, baffled and shocked. Although the latter was left more so ready to faint at the revelation.
"Hold it right there, mister!" Cassandra fumed. "I was worried sick about you! And here I find you again, chatting it up and befriending an assassin trying to kill you. Why should I keep hiring these people?"
"I don't see the problem," Shiro shrugged. "The more allies we have, the more connection Lex loses out on. What better way to fight fire is with more fire."
"You sound like you have a personal vendetta against him!" Cassandra argued back.
"Well, not against Lex per se. This is more of my middle finger to someone that works closely with him."
"Who!?"
…
..
.
Somewhere in the depths of space, onboard Lex's ship...Leon sneezed.
"Ugh, I can already feel a headache from my past failures. I should've killed him when I had the chance.
…
.
.
"Don't worry about it," Shiro grinned from ear to ear. "He'll get what's coming to him."
"You're impossible!" Cassandra exclaimed.
"Well, what do you want me to do, just ignore them when they cry out for help!?"
"Yes!"
"Excuse you! And I didn't ask for your help!"
"The point is," Shiro ignored Rika's input. "I thought I was the only survivor of my race until recently."
"But you can't just go around saving everyone!"
"Offering two people a job does not constitute, as you put it, 'saving everyone,' Shiro argued back. "If anything, showing them a better path to follow isn't helping either, but it's not like I'm forcing them to change their way.
Shiro and Cassandra continue to scowl until Cassandra gives in first.
"Fine, but if she tries anything funny-"
"I'll take responsibility," Shiro finally smiled. "Thank you."
"You're just lucky that I love you, goofball," Cassandra muttered, her cheeks flush red. She took out a document, folded it in a letter, and tossed it to Rika. "Here, hand this to the maids. They'll get you started on work right away."
"You guys are wired," Rika stared blankly, baffled at the two as they went from bickering to suddenly making up. "You two fight like an old married couple."
"We're not even a couple!" Cassandra retorted. Though she wanted to add, 'not yet, anyways,' she kept that to herself.
"Will you keep your promise?" Rika asked Shiro.
"Of course," Shiro nodded. "Thought it'll take me time to research. I'm not all too familiar with curses. That was more of Leon's specialty since his Gramp's actual family was related by blood."
"...!"
"...!"
"What?" Shiro noted the silence.
"Earlier, you said Leon was your brother!?" Cassandra recalled.
"Yeah, that's right."
"So Zenrus isn't your actual grandfather?!" Rika questioned.
"That's right, gramps is what I call him. But he's not my grampa by blood. I'm adopted." He dropped the bombshell. "Did I forget to mention that?"
"Ehhhh!" An ear-piercing screech from both girls nearly made Shiro deaf momentarily. Shiro turned around before the screen faded to black and scratched his head.
"Oops… my bad."
To Be Continued...
