A mysterious woman arrives in Tokyo . She has the face of an innocent, but behind her peaceful amber eyes lie dark secrets she alone knew...
The thin, short man whom Sano had encountered earlier now stood before him. His bright, beady eyes were steady as they stared at him. Behind him was another man, a mask-wearing ninja. It was Hannya.
Besshimi, the shorter man, stepped towards the intruders, a challenging smile on his face. "Ah, guests. It's been too long since we had one here, I believe," he said in a deceptively affable tone.
"It's you!" Sano hissed, clenching and unclenching his fists.
"Sanosuke-san," Kenshin murmured, trying to bring his friend to a realization that his hot-headedness would prove to be his undoing. The Oniwabanshuu were not to be looked down on. After all, they were ninjas and ninjas employed stealth and cunning to their fullest advantage.
Besshimi chuckled, infuriating Sano even more. "You," he repeated mockingly. "Are those the only words you know? Everytime we meet, that is all you ever say."
Sano was a street punk and he knew that he was being goaded into anger. Still, his temper was always short and he never learned to control it. "Shut up, you lousy bastard! Tell me where Takada is or fight me! If you don't tell, I'll force the answers from your bleeding, toothless mouth!" He punctuated his threat with a raised fist as he placed himself into a fighting stance.
Kenshin watched Sano's face, seeing something, a determination that was rare in him. The tall, former fighter-for-hire was a laidback character and he rarely, if ever, was determined. So this attitude he was showing now was both new and foreign. Kenshin wondered whether it had more to do with Takani Megumi or the fact that the Oniwabanshuu's opium was what caused his friend's death. No matter. I mustn't interfere, the red-haired swordsman thought.
Kenshin stepped back into the sidelines, still keeping his eyes on the two men who were now beginning to circle each other. Kaoru and Yahiko stood beside him, also watching the same scene. And then Yahiko suddenly caught sight of Hannya also standing in the sidelines. "That's him!" The boy exclaimed, pointing an excited finger at the masked ninja.
His childish voice went unheard among the two men who were engaged in battle. But Kenshin and Kaoru were a little startled by his exclamation. "What are you talking about?" Kaoru asked her young pupil.
Yahiko turned excited black eyes at his sensei. "That's him. That's the guy I saw with Megumi-san this morning," he replied. At this, Kaoru looked towards where the ninja was . The ninja did not flinch nor did he indicate that he was bothered at all by having other people talk about him. His mask made his facial expression impossible to decipher but his body language spoke volumes. He couldn't care less.
"Come on! Is that all you have?" Besshimi suddenly declared, his voice taunting. He was standing only two feet away from a panting Sano. It was obvious that the Onimabashu member was the better fighter but Sano had stamina. So it took him only a few seconds to recover from the blow that Besshimi gave him before he was once more renewed swinging his powerful fists at the wraith-like form of his enemy.
The ninja was quick. He dodged. He parried. And after six fist stances, Sano was still unable to penetrate his defenses. He didn't know how he could keep up with this for long. Most of his strength was drained by his earlier fight with the one called 'Shikijo' and his brain was still a little bit hazy from the alcohol. But in his mind, he saw Megumi's pale, haunting face and there he found his strength. He swung another blow.
Besshimi jumped back, hiding his surprise well. That swing was a little too close for comfort. He must be careful. There was something odd about this kid. It seemed that the more he fought, the faster his reflexes and the more powerful his attacks become. It was improbably, of course, but it seemed that way.
Besshimi issued Sano a wary eye as he distanced himself from the opponent's long reach. He began his assessment and it didn't take long for him to realize that the kid took defense for granted. In fact, none of his stances offered defense. All were attacks. But rather than rendering Sano weak, this rendered him even stronger. Because he cared not about the outcome, his blows are full-powered, unhindered by hesitation.
The Oniwabanshuu member smiled grimly as he finally stepped in and decided to match Sano blow for blow. He could not afford to be always on the defensive with an opponent like this. He would wear himself out before he could make his attack.
Sano perceived the change of tactics but this did not alarm him in the least bit. He had one goal and that was to hit his opponent, at least once. He had his chance when Besshimi avoided Sano's right fist by jumping. He must have landed wrongly for he appeared to lose his balance. Sano took this opportunity to aim a punch and broke his nose. He did not spare a second as he quickly followed this with a sharp jab to the stomach and another, knocking the opponent's breath out. Sano then lifted him like a rattle -- the man was unsurprisingly light -- and threw him across the room. There was a groan before the man went silent.
Sano remained standing, trying to catch his breath. And then slowly, deliberately, he turned to look at the masked ninja.
Hannya saw everything and couldn't help but admire the boy's tenacity and stamina. He knew Besshimi to be a skilled warrior, certainly more skilled than this street punk. If it hadn't been for an injury that Besshimi incurred a week ago where he sprained his right foot, he would have landed from that jump without trouble. And certainly, he would not have been beaten by the white-robed one.
"Where is Takada?" Sano said to him, his eyes fiery.
Hannya saw no problem in giving him a straight answer. Takada was no longer of the Oniwabanshuu. There was no betrayal in speaking about him to his enemies. "He is here but I know not where, " he said.
"What about...," Sano closed his eyes and swallowed, before finishing, "what about Takani Megumi?"
When Hannya answered, there was a perceptible smile in his voice. "She is...well."
