A/N: Just thought I'd open up the discussion about creating new eeveelutions. I hope I'm not the only one who was disappointed that we didn't get a new eeveelution with the latest generation. Thanks to one reader I have a few ideas for some (such as flying) that could come into play whenever it feels natural to do so.
But don't worry - first all of the ones I promised will be added to the pile first. And I do promise that they won't all be male. I just wanted to keep it semi-realistic based on the canon ratios. Side note, I don't think I will be skipping vast quantities of time from this point on so I will do away with the age counter underneath the chapter from this point on.
Heartfelt Interference
Chapter Twenty-seven
"Woah, slow down there," Max said as he looked out at you from behind his glasses.
You smiled slightly and put down your spoon. It was no wonder that he was trying to get you to slow down eating considering the fact that you'd practically inhaled an entire plate of curry and rice. It was just that after reacquainting yourself with mauville you were understandably famished. And right now it just felt like you couldn't get enough food no matter how big your plate had been. Still, you realized he was right. The rice was bound to bloat up in your stomach and make you regret how much you'd eaten. You already kind of felt that happening actually, there was a bit more fluff to poke at around your middle than before which was a pretty good indication that you'd stuffed your stomach with the delicious curry.
Now you kind of understood why some trainers were thrilled about finding a pokemon center. Not only did they take care of the pokemon (albeit on a surface, battle ready level only) but the food was very well made. It was mostly cheap, in season vegetables with scants amount of meat, but it was hot and filling. And it didn't require you to cook anything which was always a nice feature. Sure you kind of missed being in the comfort of your own home and it was strange not having to cater to meals to keep the eeveelutions happy but...well, nothing was perfect. Besides there was a certain thrill in the air to know that
"So there's another class in the morning. What were you going to focus on?" Max asked you as he leaned back in the booth.
You took a moment to set your spoon down. You might have felt as though you were constantly hungry but that was no excuse for making a mess. It wasn't like the hunger was an excuse to be a barbarian after all. Besides it was already embarrassing enough that Max thought you were eating too much too quickly as it was.
"Probably communication styles of Pokémon. I know a lot of trainers get it figured out as time goes on but I think it's better to figure it out early."
The blue haired teenager nodded as he stared directly at you. The look made you feel like you were being scrutinized which you probably were. Max was one of those people who often pointed out the truth even if no one wanted him to. It had been a trait that you admired when you'd been younger. And to a degree you still liked it, it was just that you weren't too keen on being evaluated right now.
"You should show them what you can do."
That was not the kind of comment you were expecting. Realistically though it should have been. Max had known for years that you communicated with your Pokémon. At least he knew you talked with Rorsh. You supposed he put together that it was a bit more generalized at some point in time.
"You can talk with any Pokémon right? Not just yours?"
You shrugged slightly, "Not as frequently or as fluently. But yeah, as long as the pokemon is willing I guess. I'm not too sure how it works."
"What?" Max asked with wide eyes. "You mean you haven't gotten training yet? That's the first thing I would do!"
That made you confused. There was actual training for what you could do? Since when? Max picked up on the confusion on your face and laughed good naturedly even though it was still at your expense.
"You've never heard about the gym leader Sabrina? She's said to be the most powerful psychic in the world, and she's pretty famous in Kanto. Her whole gym is nothing but pure psychic types. She even helps train people who think they have psychic powers too."
"Really?" You asked him with wide eyes. "I didn't know that."
Then again, that wasn't surprising. Your understanding of the world was rather tiny - mostly you'd just been taught everything you might need to know about how to care for and raise pokemon. And sure you'd gotten through all the mandatory schooling but you hadn't learned about the gym track system like he did.
Max nodded fervently with a rather pleased expression on his face. "It's in all of the books about being a pokemon trainer in the Kanto region. Don't tell me you didn't read them?"
Now that sounded a little condescending. You frowned as you started to scoop more curry onto your spoon. "I had a lot of other things to do."
"That's where you made your mistake," Max said with certainty which was mildly insulting. "I know that if I had the ability to talk with pokemon like you do that I wouldn't waste a minute - I'd go get training for it."
Instead of saying anything you kept quiet. Maybe it was the fact that you hadn't gotten to see Max for long a long period of time in the past or maybe it was that you hadn't noticed when you were younger, but you weren't a fan of this mightier-than-thou attitude he had. He might have been trying to help you but it was definitely rubbing you the wrong way. Besides, you might just be getting grumpy because of the cramp that was setting into your lower stomach. Curry did have a tendency to build gas up in your body.
"I'm going to bed," you said quietly as you scooted out of the booth.
It was a waste to throw away all this good food but you really didn't care for how this conversation had turned. It wasn't that you disliked your ability to talk with pokemon, it was just that you knew there was more to it than Max made it seem. You'd often worried when you were younger (and still did, actually) that people would either lock you up for being insane or try to study you. Of course, you hadn't known that there was a gym leader with psychic abilities either. Nor did you know that they took people in and taught them. Despite how many pokemon you'd been exposed to your understanding of the world was rather narrowed unlike Max. He had traveled around Hoenn and Kanto when he was younger with his sister and some other friends. It was just that you didn't care for the way he kept insisting he knew better so suddenly.
After you cleaned off your plate and washed your dish before putting it where you'd been shown, you headed to the dorms. This was the first pokemon center that you'd ever been in so you didn't know if what you saw was standard. However, it kind of felt like it. There were four sets of bunk beds where the pairs were lined up alongside the wall with barely a break between them. In the space where there was a gap between the pairs there had been a tall cubby system built in for trainers to place their private items. Other than the beds there was a large window between the two sets of beds with a desk and chair underneath it. As you looked around you noticed that there was only two other people, presumably trainers in the room which left six beds open to choose from. There wasn't much in the way of decoration nor did the furniture seem very unique but as you sat down you had to admit that the bed was comfortable. And if you had been a trainer weary from traveling then this place would probably have been like heaven.
You looked towards the bottom row of cubbies by your bed where you'd put your backpack. It took a bit of stretching but you were able to get into it. There was a singular pokeball hidden in a hidden pocket on the inside which you pulled out. After clicking the button a stream of red light filled the relatively dim room. Thankfully it didn't disturb the other two individuals in the room. Nor did the sound of Ember stretch out and making a kind of questioning sound.
"Sorry you had to stay in your ball so long."
The flareon seemed to shrug before he looked around. It wasn't as though he'd be able to see very much in the room, no more than you saw when you first walked in before closing the door. But it was a natural reaction to take in one's surroundings. Once he deemed it safe or whatever, Ember moved over to your bag. You knew exactly what he was going for before he had time to get there so you got up and stopped him.
"If you keep eating you're going to get fat."
"You're one to talk."
Your mouth dropped open ever so slightly as he stared at you. Wow. Leave it to Ember to say something like that. He was kind of the brutally honest type ever since you met him. After all, one of the first things that you had heard from him was the fact that you had to get over Rorsh leaving a few years ago. He'd been right - you had needed to move on. It had just been hard to hear and harder to do than anything.
"What?"
"You've put on a little weight," Ember said as he flicked his tail over your stomach. "You should train more."
"Well excuse me if I have to take care of all the food, grooming...you know, the stuff you love," you said in a whisper with a bit of an eye roll.
"Speaking of which," Ember pointedly indicated towards your bag.
His brush was in there as well. Now that 'request' you acquiesced to. Ember settled in front of you as you sat on the bottom bunk of the bunk bed. The motions of brushing through his fur was soothing to both you and him. It wasn't long before you realized that Ember had been lulled into a near sleep state that made him look so sweet and innocent. It was almost easy to forget the fact that he'd practically called you lazy. It wasn't that it was bad to have a bit of weight - it was just that if you were gaining some then it was stubbornly clinging onto your body some how. Other than the obvious feminine traits that had grown in abundance, you didn't retain to much because contrary to Ember's belief you did do a lot of physical activities. Being a good breeder meant being active with the pokemon; until a breeder made a name for themselves or carved out their little niche where they could comfortably accept or deny certain requests without fear of losing the basis for their livelihood they had to be able to keep up with the pokemon. Not to mention there were things like lifting buckets of water, constantly being on your feet, and other various physical activities that you had to complete almost every day. Though the more you brushed him the less you thought about it.
The warmth from his body was incredibly soothing and it was no secret that his hair was like brushing through a soft, warm cloud. Flareon fur when properly cared for really was among the best; especially for a fire type. After a lot of stroking through said fur with his designated brush you finally put it away. Ember barely lifted an eyelid to see what you were doing as you secured your backpack back into the cubby. He did, however, look up when the door opened up once more.
Max came in with a rather expressive look on his face. Although that was actually very hard to see seeing as his back was towards the light, casting his face in shadows. Mostly it was just an impression you got as he moved closer. He seemed nervous.
Ember slowly stood up and hopped up onto the bed next to you, taking his time to do it. You felt his warmth against your side as he sat on the cover, staring out at Max. The dark haired teenager stopped close to you and looked down, his hands kind of wiggling near his side.
"Look, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to insult you," Max started out. "I was just so excited to finally talk to you about what you can do that I kind of got carried away."
"Alright," you accepted mildly.
"Do you forgive me?"
"Yes," you said though it was hard to meet him in the eyes.
"But next time don't just run off, okay? Tell me when I say something wrong."
Run off? Is that what he thought you did? You looked up at him to try and see his facial expression as best you could in the extremely dim lighting of the dorm room. The more you concentrate the less color you actually saw. But suddenly as the room looked black and white to you, you could see him clearly. He had this worried look on his face but it also seemed to be mixed with a bit of frustration. Not only that but Max was trimmed in silver fire which moved this way and that as he rocked back and forth.
As you closed your eyes you could still see everything going on around you. The outlines of the furniture were like those of an unfinished drawing - fuzzy but completely distinguishable. You could see beyond the walls too. The wiring carrying electricity was like the silver fire that traced around Max; not exactly the same but it was more like that then the outlines of objects. Black, white, and everything in between stretched on for what seemed like forever even though your eyes were closed. And the more you tried to get it to go away it seemed the farther you could 'see'. It was like when you were a kid all over again only this time there was no Rorsh to pull your mind out of the spiral.
"Hey, are you alright?"
You could hear Max call out to you but his voice seemed kind of like it was rooms away. What was really easy to tell was the fact that he was moving his arm. That was clearer to you than anything. You flinched as he moved his arm towards you just out of pure instinct. You might have seen the world in black and white before a few different times but it always had this haunted feeling to you that you didn't know how to shake.
Your tongue felt too thick in your mouth to say anything to try and alleviate Max's worry. You felt it like a tangible thing in the air as his silver fire outline flashed and twisted all at the same time. It was almost like a turbulent spot in a creak, one that could have been a rapid if only it evolved. You both felt and saw everything in the room all at once and it was a bit mind blowing. You felt like the wind had been knocked out of you despite the fact that nothing had really touched you - well nothing other than Max's hand. You could feel Ember moving around to curl behind you, providing warmth to your back which suddenly seemed cold in comparison.
Max shook your shoulder and out of instinct your eyes opened up, though it really didn't change anything. The teenager took a step back as he saw your eyes which caused you to close them. You knew that he'd made a sound based on the fact that you saw his jaw move and his mouth open.
"Woah."
"Max...I need you to do me a favor," you said slowly, quietly, and started to stand up with much difficulty seeing as it was hard to concentrate on anything other than the black and white world on fire.
"Uh, yeah, sure, what do you need?"
"I need you to call my mom or dad. My pokegear is in my backpack," You stopped for a moment as a wave of dizziness gripped you. Ember helped to make sure you didn't fall back onto your bed like a fool and you were grateful for that.
Max hurried over to your backpack and started to search for your pokegear. It was the same one you'd gotten as a kid - you'd just made sure that it hadn't got damaged. Besides you hadn't had much of a reason to carry it with you since you'd stopped going to school. Mostly it was just kind of there.
You slowly made your way to the door. You tried not to pay attention to the fact that the world was pulsing and everything was either glowing or outlined, though that was actually impossible. Instead you tried to focus on not tripping. Also difficult given that the ground looked nothing like you were used to. Though it wasn't as hard of a task as ignoring the white pulsing going on around you. As you made your way to the bathroom Max worked on calling your mom and dad.
It wasn't too late though you knew that they were probably getting ready for bad. You felt horrible about that, you really did, but there really was no helping it. You also knew that you were inconveniencing Max too but right now you didn't know what else to do. At the very least you could move out of the room where two other trainers were trying to sleep and hope that no one else needed to use the bathroom right away. Ember traveled around you; worried and anxious even though he wouldn't show it. You stopped and grabbed at your stomach as you felt pain. That was new and something you very much didn't appreciate. At all.
You almost felt like you were going to crush the doorknob as you turned it, moving in there and using the doorframe to make sure that you had a wall to lean back against. Ember moved in right behind you as you leaned against the wall. You had kind of been able to tell what it was by sight but it was still much different than you were used to. You watched as rushing sparkles traveled through outlines of what you could assume was pipes all around the room. It was both rushing and somehow standing still. Water. It had to be water.
"Okay, I got them on the pokegear," Max said as he tried to respect your privacy by staying outside of the still cracked door.
"Slide it to me," you said in a breathless voice.
Whatever this was...it was tiring. It felt like you'd been running for at least half an hour even though it had only been maybe three minutes at most. You heard it slip around the door before Max closed it and watched then as the silver spirit shape of Ember moved it closer to you.
"Honey, what's wrong?"
You took a deep breath to try and get your voice stable, though you kept your eyes closed because you didn't want to worry your mom. If Max had seen something out of the ordinary when you'd opened them then you knew your mom was going to see it right now. You might not be able to see her over the digital display but you could hear the worry in her voice.
"Mom, I need you to send Rorsh here. I'm at the pokemon center."
"Why? Did you get into trouble?"
After a moment of not responding, mostly because you didn't know how to respond, she spoke again.
"You don't look good."
Ember settled next to you. Judging from the way he was sitting he was really tense. His silver fire kept snapping around him; anxious.
"I just need Rorsh."
"Es-peeeon."
That was a sound you hadn't heard in a very long time, not since he'd been an eevee. You supposed since you weren't near him you couldn't understand him. Just like you couldn't see him right now with this...whatever it was going on.
"You should go to the hospital."
"No. Just send him."
Why didn't they get that? Sure it wasn't often that this happened but you'd dealt with it before. You just needed something to help you push it back away and so far the only thing that had ever done that had been letting Rorsh into your mind. You supposed it was like flipping a switch - you just had to distract yourself. But how could you do that when you could literally see through walls all around you? It wasn't like you could close your eyes to stop seeing what was going on. And the more you tried not to see what was happening around you the more you saw farther away from you.
"That will take at least an hour."
...you'd forgotten about that. You gripped at your shirt and tried not to let how much your whole body hurt show on your face. You might not be able to see them right now but you had no doubts that your mom could see you. Especially when you heard a very sharp, very demanding "Espi!" in the background as well as felt Ember lay his head over your lap. The heat did feel good, which helped to loosen the cramp. But it didn't help you focus on not seeing your surroundings at all. Everything flashed white in your eyes as your vision snapped back to your surrounding area.
You heard something from the other side but you couldn't see what it was. There was a sound of surprise and your mother asking something in a murmured voice. Then another sound from not one but three pokemon - Rorsh, Nox, and Eon. You might not be able to understand them over the technology but you did know their voices by now. It was just slightly tweaked given that all you could actually hear was a variant particle of their name.
"Alright, we have an idea. Can you hand the pokegear back to your friend Max please?"
You nodded and tried to grab at the device. It kind of looked like a ball of lightning with how you saw the world right now. Standing up was the next hard part. As you slowly started to rise to your feet you felt Ember take the pokegear out of your hand with his mouth. And then with some dexterity you hadn't seen out of him before he reared up and twisted the doorknob with his paws. As he landed back down on the ground, the door opened. You couldn't see behind you but you heard Max when he took the pokegear and then he'd started running away. Apparently whatever you mom thought of made the teenager feel like it had to be done quickly.
Ember closed the door once more with his back leg and returned to your side. You slowly moved back to sit down as you decided to stare up. Only that was probably the worst mistake you could have made because you got an eye full of what was happening on the floor above you. Some things happening in private room should definitely stay private. You were pretty sure that your face was going to explode with the blood that rushed to it from embarrassment.
"Try and relax."
He was trying to be helpful, you knew that Ember was making that effort but all you wanted to do was either curl up into a ball or tell him that it was easier said than done. Both of course were easier said than done as you tried to just hold on for a bit longer. It felt like ages between heart beats. It was getting hard to breathe actually. Your body felt like you'd been putting it through the ringer. Every bone started to feel like it was vibrating and your muscles felt like you were over stretching them. There was a sense of fatigue that started to set in as well. Passing out would have been much more preferable to this monochromatic hell. Assuming of course that you woke up after. Right now it felt like those times when you'd stretched yourself too thin and trained too long with Ember. Whatever was happening right now was definitely connected to that. You just didn't exactly know how.
You felt a new sensation that could only be described as a water balloon being popped and it gushing all at once. Your pants didn't absorb nearly as much as they would have if they'd been cotton, causing the thick watery material to slide down your leg. With horror and fright all at once you struggled to take off not only your pants but your shoes so you could even get your pants off to begin with. Ember started to back away from you in confusion.
You gripped your stomach as the latest cramp rolled through you. The true fear set in when you realized that it wasn't exactly a cramp. At least it wasn't in the usual sense. There really was no comparison to describe what you felt; at least nothing that wouldn't be obscene.
"What's happening?"
His silver energy was all around the place. You practically panted before you clenched your jaw, sweat lining your face. Your hands moved to help support you so that you didn't fall down. You squeezed your eyes closed tightly as you held in a sound of pain. When you reopened your eyes the world was back to how it should have been - you could see each and every detail in color with the silver fire around it. That was a relief. But that finally let you see exactly what was happening.
That water that slid down your leg was mixed with a little bit of blood. And it wasn't exactly water for that matter. It was thicker - mucus like. The reality of what was happening rolled over you with sudden clarity as you started to vividly recall some of the videos from health and sex ed. You didn't need to look down your body to see what was causing the sensation. In fact you were pretty sure that right now that was only going to make the situation worse for your already exhausted brain. Instead you shakingly got to your knees and spread your legs out wide. At the very least you were going to have gravity help you as your mind raced over what the hell was going on. One thing was clear though -you'd gotten pregnant...from your pokemon. And after just the scant few weeks, less than a month and a half really, something was happening. You didn't know if it was a miscarriage or if was giving birth.
At least not until you heard the plop as whatever it was slowly slid onto the tiled ground. Embers complete sound of surprise said more than any words could ever describe. You nearly fell forward as the sensation of something sliding back out through your body died down. You caught yourself with your forearms, touching your head to the ground as you panted. The feeling of wetness wasn't going to leave anytime soon but at least that sliding sensation was gone.
It took a moment before you even felt steady enough to turn around and see what had just come out of you. When you did you realized that there was the shape of something in extremely cloudy liquid. The only thing stopping all that thick, cloudy liquid from spilling everywhere was what seemed to be a thin membrane. You realized in a hazy sort of way when you fell back onto your ass that it was your placenta.
The door practically burst open. Three eeveelutions ran into the room.
"Close the door. Close the door. Close the door," you kept repeating until you realized that it was firmly closed.
There was no way you wanted anyone else to see what lay between your feet right now. You were having a hard time believing it and it had just come out of you. You'd...you weren't sure how to accurately define what had happened. Did you give birth? Was it alive? Did you miscarry? Was it dead? ...What was it?
