Chapter 27
"I heard that you went on a date with a certain famous pro-hero."
You hadn't had time to cover the incredulous expression on your face when Monoma leaned on a wall nearby. Class 1B was doing a directed workout routine that had been customized for them. Which meant that you were there to keep the students going all day; cleaning out lactic acid, making sure oxygen and blood flow was healthy, and soothing over major muscle groups. Monoma had come over for a short break when you hadn't been paying attention. Apparently he had wanted to point out some dazzling information he found out and just now found the time to do so. For your part you had no idea what he was talking about. So you turned to look at him, face balancing somewhere between surprise and confusion.
"So you don't deny it," the blond student said with almost a mocking laugh as he used a clean towel to wipe the sweat from his face.
"I have no idea what you're even talking about," you told the manic copycat.
"You were seen at a park eating lunch with the number 2 hero, Hawks."
"...okay so someone got their facts wrong. I was eating lunch by myself, he just stopped by to say hi on his way to U.A," you corrected Monoma.
"That's not what's all over the news."
You stared at him blandly to avoid glaring at the kid. If he was right, you couldn't be mad at him. At least not unless he was the one to write the news story. Assuming, of course, that it was even on the news. For all you know, he could have been talking about it as though it had been published when in fact it was just something a couple kids had been talking about. It was Monoma after all. He wasn't the most reliable or unbiased source of information.
"Where?"
"What?" He asked in return as he sat the soiled towel down before taking a drink from his container.
"Which news source is spreading the lies this time?" You asked in a more direct tone.
"The Nikkan Gendai."
Shit. You frowned heavily even as you tried to project a more neutral stance. You knew from experience with your own family how quickly acts of denial can inflame the inaccurate news until it was accepted as truth. At the same time letting students or people you were with regularly circulate and repeat false information would also be seen as confirmation.
"So a tabloid," you replied in an even tone, rolling your eyes.
"One of the biggest and most respected newspaper branches in all of Japan," Monoma returned with a smug tone.
Your deadpan expression slipped into a glare. Monoma took a slight step back as his smile only increased. He pushed his bangs back as he let out that somehow patronizing chuckle of his.
"Maybe you should stop hanging out with so many pro heroes if you don't want the reporters to write gossip about you."
"I don't hang out with pro- heroes," you said, shifting your jaw as you tried to keep the aggression out of your tone.
It really wasn't his fault. You knew that. You were just annoyed that the news was so hungry for something to publish that you got caught up in it. Again.
"Endeavor, Recovery Girl, Vlad King, Eraserhead, and even All Might," Monoma listed off on his fingers. Then he added up another one. "And now Hawks."
"Work, family, work, work, and being a good human being plus work," you listed off in the same matter. "And like I said, Hawks just dropped by on his way to talk with someone at U.A."
"I believe you," the blond said with a smile. "But the picture of you sharing your food is going to convince a lot of people otherwise."
"I didn't—" but you stopped yourself.
You vaguely remembered handing him a chicken skewer. You groaned and covered your face with one hand out of frustration. At the time you hadn't thought much about it. Hawks had seemed very interested in the movements you made with food. Given that it had been lunch time and you knew he was going to be busy right through it, it had only seemed right to give him a skewer. Even if one skewer was more of a good snack size than a full meal the idea had just been to help him. You hadn't thought of the repercussions from such a simple act of kindness.
You peaked at Monoma, almost glaring at him again, before saying, "Just get over here for the tune up so you can get back to work."
At the end he told you something that made you feel better. As you rinsed your tendrils off with warm water, Monoma admitted:
"At least the press hasn't put a name to the picture they have. And it wasn't even a great picture! Anyone in class 1B could have gotten a picture a hundred times better than that!"
Oh look. His ego complex was back.
"Then how did you know it was me?" You asked him as you turned back around, ready for the next student.
"You taught us to be able to pick out our support staff from a crowd, remember?" He asked with a wide grin. "And told us to pay attention to details in the face and body incase someone's trying to disguise themselves! Do you think I'm like the idiots in class 1A who don't pay attention to what they've been told?!"
You rolled your eyes at the issues he projected before you shooed him back off to his workout. It was Kendo's turn to take a recovery break.
________________________________________
You pulled a bottle of water out of the fridge before sitting down in the lounging area. After the mishap with the lunch "date", you were weary to eat outside of U.A. And since class 1A was on Nabu Island, the dorms just felt empty and depressing. So you had decided to eat lunch inside of the actual school. However as a not-student, eating in Lunch Rush's cafeteria was out of the question. Which just left the Teacher's Room.
The room was more than spacious. There was a desk for every adult working in the school. Along with that there was a well stocked kitchen, a handful of private toilets, and lounge space with a spacious coffee table. Attached to the teacher's room was even a luxurious showering room with a couple private stalls. The more you poked and prodded about the facilities in your spare time the more you realized it was no wonder the teachers never seemed to actually leave the school unless they were on duty as Heroes. Other than beds the Teacher's room had everything they needed. And based on Aizawa's sleeping bag with him inside of it on the couch in front of you, he had even solved the need to sleep elsewhere. The other teachers, while they stayed as long as other teachers across the country, had not taken up Aizawa's "solution". Thankfully.
You laughed to yourself as you imagined the room filled up with wiggling yellow cocoons of teachers.
Aizawa cracked an eye open at your amused sound. You waved off his questioning look to put him more at ease so he could go back to sleep. At which point you started eating the lunch in front of you. You looked up midway through your katsudon as the principal made his way over. He had a cup of tea in his paw as he climbed onto the comfortable couch right beside you. Considering that there were two individual chairs adjacent to the couch you were sitting on, you were going to make the assumption that he wanted to talk.
"Sir?"
"Yes?" Principal Nezu asked after a cautious sip of his hot tea.
"Did you want to talk?"
"Oh, I just wanted to check in to see how you're settling in to your position with class 1B."
"I think it's going well," you said honestly. "Currently I'm assisting the students during training to increase efficiency over time. And I'm happy Vlad King trusts me enough to teach the students what I've learned about the realities of the day to day grind too."
That last comment might have been aimed at Aizawa. Said hero continued to "sleep" on the couch wrapped in his sleeping apparatus.
"That's good. I'm glad you're settling into your role," there went another sip.
You didn't know why but you had a feeling of apprehension. That feeling only grew as Nezu lowered his cup before making a thoughtful sound.
"I hope that as one of the newest staff members, you continue to feel free to come to me with any concerns or suggestions. Just as you've done in the past."
And there was the drop. You had a feeling you knew exactly what this impromptu heart to heart was really about.
"You read the news report," you said blandly.
You did your best to keep your face professionally neutral but at best, given your irritation, you managed a deadpan expression. The rising tension quieted the room which made your stomach clench even more. And though you didn't notice it, as you had turned to look at the white furred quirk user, Aizawa finally stopped pretending to be asleep as he opened his eyes.
"I didn't believe you put stock in unsubstantiated stories."
"Oh I don't," Nezu said in a tone of assurance. "But there was an accompanying picture that I don't believe was manipulated. This lends to the idea that there may be a story. Just maybe not the one that they tried to depict."
"...sir, with all due respect, can you just ask me what you want to know directly? I'd like to have time to eat my lunch."
Nezu cleared his throat. "Very well. What is your relationship with Hawks?"
"As far as I know, nothing," you replied honestly. "I met him through a client he wanted to team up with. And the second time I saw him was when that picture was taken. He was on his way to talk to you."
"Yes," was the chimera's vague sounding reply. "I thought as much but I didn't want to draw unnecessary assumptions."
It was quiet in a tense sort of way as you ate your lunch. Nezu continued to sip on his tea beside you. Meanwhile Aizawa had moved to sit up. No doubt he had paperwork to double check for the students. While they were working they had to fill out paperwork and reports just like the real pros. The only difference was that as their teacher, Aizawa was checking over their documentation from a distance to ensure everything was in order.
"I apologize for interrupting your lunch," Nezu finally spoke again as he finished his tea. "I just wanted to make sure you were in a comfortable place. I would hate to lose such a promising employee so early into their career."
"Even if I were in a relationship, I have no plans on resigning my position...not that you'd let me..."
Oops. That last part was meant to stay in your head. From the way the...rodent laughed, you'd have to say he wasn't offended.
"Quite right. I believe that you and the other support staff will make all the difference in preparing the students for their future. It would be short sighted of me to lose such valuable educators over something like a difference of opinion. You're in the prime of your life too! So I want to do my best to encourage you to have a satisfying, fulfilling life both at the school and outside of it. All I ask is that should you like to pursue anything over night outside of U.A's properties, that you let me know."
We're there crickets? You could have sworn you heard crickets as Aizawa finally stood up from the couch with his yellow sleeping bag folded over one arm. Nezu seemed obvious to the fact that he was speaking so much but saying so little. Considering the fact that you told him to speak frankly, it was mildly annoying that he was beating around the bush again.
"Sir?" You prompted quizzically. "I'm sorry but...was that just a bunch of well wishes or were you asking me to inform you about my personal life?"
"It'll help Recovery Girl and myself to worry less about your safety if we maintain an open, honest dialogue. After all, humans have sporadic courtship and mating rituals in comparison to other mammals. Though studies do show that the majority of babies are born in late summer which would logically place the most popular conception time around this month."
And cue the red face of embarrassment. You stared at the quirky animal with your mouth parted.
"While a majority of my female staff have aged out of the time of their life where they may be seeking out a virile mate for procreation, I do like to check in with everyone from time to time. I know that professionally it's none of my business but I believe that ethically I have a duty to care for the staff and see to their continued health as much as possible don't you?"
"Yes?" You put out uncertainty as you tried to stop from blushing in embarrassment.
"Good. I'm glad we had this talk! Please enjoy the rest of your lunch."
