Aspirations
Chapter 28
You looked at the notification on your phone. It said that you had a delivery. The funny thing was that you couldn’t remember ordering anything. Even more bizarre was the fact that you’d gotten a notice about something being delivered to your office. You had never ordered anything to be sent to that office before. You barely even knew the new address so there was no way that any company had shipped an appreciation package either.
Which was exactly why you trudged through the minute amount of snow to make your way off campus. The Main Street was well maintained so it didn’t take you long to get to the building.
Once you’d gotten there you had a whole other set of questions. Namely revolving around why Hawks was there. Noticing the fact that he was bundled up as much as he possibly could be while still being free to move his wings, you opened the door to the office so he could go in. It was warmer inside the building despite not having the heating on. Hawks looked around as you turned on the lights and set the temperature.
“I bet you’re wondering what I’m doing here,” Hawks was the first to break the silence.
You turned around to see him pulling out two lacquered boxes from inside his jacket. They looked like very nice bento boxes if you weren’t mistaken. Though a bit on the smaller side they were packed well.
“I figured after you handed me half your lunch, I owed you.”
Well at least you guessed right. You tilted your head as you regarded the winged hero. He had such a warm, open look on his face as he handed you one of the boxes that you accepted with a murmured: “Thanks.”
“Mind if I eat lunch in here with you? It’s a bit of a flight back to the office and I just got the icicles off if you know what I mean.”
“Sure,” you said quietly, still feeling confused about the situation.
You motioned for Hawks to follow you. You lead him from the office space to the much larger back room. There was a door to the side that led up to a decently sized attic you’d been using as storage. Even with the couple of boxes of things up there, there was still plenty of space to sit down and have lunch as was evident by the small round table and chair. Though prior to quickly cleaning the table off, there had been books on mutant quirks open to various different pages. You closed the books and grabbed a cushioned medical stool to use as the second seat.
“Would this or the chair be comfier for you?”
He did have large scarlett wings behind him to consider. The chair you had up there was fairly standard as it hadn’t been made for a mutant quirk. Which was why you guessed the stool would have worked better for him. Based on his choice you felt confident to say that he was right.
“You do know that you could have just had it delivered right?”
You asked the question as you and he sat at the table. Perhaps it wasn’t the smartest idea to be along with a stranger even if it was for lunch. The fact that it looked like he had somehow tricked the delivery notifications was a little disconcerting but he seemed like a nice enough guy. It was the fact that he was such a recognizable hero which put you at ease. Sure some heroes could have been horrible people in disguise but that wasn’t your experience. Plus you knew if he laid a hand on you there were plenty of people out there that would love to hear about that. Bad news sells and all that.
“Yeah but that seemed a little impersonal after you shared the Yakitori you made.”
That caused a small smile on your face as you opened the box. Unsurprisingly it was a high quality, yet not pretentious, Yakitori bento.
“How do you know I made them?” You asked with interest as youfit the bento lid underneath the other. “I could have gotten them from a couple places around here.”
Hawks shook his head as he pushed his protective glasses up to act as a headband of sorts. “None of the shops taste like the one you made. Trust me I tried them all.”
“You must really like Yakitori,” you commented.
“Don’t tell anyone or I’ll have people delivering it all the time. Even I can’t eat a mountain of it.”
“Well you could try but flying might get difficult if you add another person’s weight,” you teased slightly, picking up the first skewer.
Haws chuckled good naturedly. “I don’t know about that. I can carry a lot more than just my weight with these wings.”
“But a whole other person?” You asked in interest. “If you gained like 60 or 70 kilos, you’d still be able to fly?”
“No sweat. Haven’t you seen the news reports? I can carry a whole other person with just a medium length feather.”
“That’s pretty cool,” you praised. “I suppose that’s my fault for assuming they worked like a normal avian feature. They’re a lot more than just a pretty decoration.”
His wings spread out from his back, flapping a little. You pushed back some wayward hair in the resulting breeze. You smiled before deciding to laughingly blow into his face. Hawks’ face turned from his jovial pride filled expression into surprise at your action as he instinctively drew back. As the surprise faded you saw an easy smile settle into place.
Satisfied that he hadn’t gotten the last “word” in, you leaned back in the chair and picked up the first skewer. The pro-hero crossed his arms over his chest, the action slightly impeded by the thickness of his winter jacket. You looked up from your meal to see him looking at you as though waiting for you to say something.
“What?”
“So?”
“Thank you for this meal?” You tried the customary phrase, though your tone was uncertain.
“How’s the meat?”
“Good,” you replied, looking at him quizzically. “It’s still warm.”
“Not too spicy?”
You shook your head. “No, I’m generally okay with spice. Compared to what I’ve eaten a lot of Japanese foods are mild.”
Hawks nodded. Apparently you’d given him a satisfactory answer because the meal continued in silence from that point on. It wasn’t until the end when you were leaning back in your chair completely full that you broke the silence.
“So…how did you trigger my delivery notice?”
The contented look on his face shifted into look of guilt. He raised his arm and scratched at the back of his head.
“Someone owed me a favor so I called it in. I figured it was for a good cause and that you wouldn’t get too upset because there was good chicken waiting for you.”
“I’m not mad. Concerned that the delivery notification are easily manipulated but…not mad. As long as this lunch stays out of the spotlight, how could I be mad at a free meal?”
Hawks lowered his hand. Though you could still see the hint of guilt on his face it lessened. You walked him back out of the attic space to the main lobby. You noticed that he took one of your business cards from the front desk but didn’t think much of it. After all, he had made an off handed comment not that long ago about trying out your skills as Endeavor found them worthy. It would make sense that he needed your contact info to do just that.
You waved him off as he took to the skies to get back to his normal area.

“Where were you?”
Aizawa stood at the gates of U.A. Though standing was a nice way to put it. He had been leaned up against the weighty thing. Or at least he had been. He pushed himself away from the structure as you got closer.
“At my parlor.”
“You didn’t log in a session,” he observed.
He was right. Shortly after joining U.A, you’d told Aizawa that you’d keep him and Nezu updated on your professional jobs outside of U.A. That way if something happened they had some extra information to go off of. Today though, you hadn’t forwarded your schedule today because you hadn’t had any clients. The lunch out at your parlor hadn’t been planned - a bit of trickery on Hawks’ part. Though to be fair to him he had been delivering your lunch.
“I was having lunch.”
“You could have eaten here. It would have saved you time.”
“The dorms feel creepy all empty, I figure eating with the kids would blur the lines between peer and authority too much, and can you blame me for not wanting to use the Teacher’s room?”
Aizawa grunted slightly, accepting your points. You walked beside him all the way back to the main school building. Your aunt could probably do with your help now.
“Besides I got a notice of a delivery so I needed to head out anyways.”
“What came in?” Aizawa asked; you couldn’t tell if it was curiousity or courtesy.
“Funny story — it was my lunch. Hawks felt he owed me a lunch since I shared mine with him. So yeah he brought me a Yakitori bento.”
Though you hadn’t really noticed, Aizawa fell out of step with you for a brief moment.
