Chapter 25: My Unwitting Master
The sun was sinking, setting the sparse clouds in the sky in radiant pinks and purples, as Alex, Abel, and the Watteau children made their way back to the Vatican. Twilight had taken hold of the town by the time they crossed the main courtyard entrance. Alex kissed all her children as Abel ushered them into their room to clean up and ready themselves for dinner. Alex needed to hunt, still recuperating from her tussle with Isaak. As she crossed the gardens, she caught movement in her peripheral vision. She turned abruptly, ready to do battle, but found herself facing Walter and Seras. The two of them stood, crossing their right arms over their chests, bowing low to her.
“You are quite adept at hiding your nature, My Lady.” Walter eyed her curiously and Seras smiled.
“Sir Hellsing told us all about the fight. I wish I’d been there to see you kick his ass.” Seras grinned a little lopsidedly.
“Indeed, it sounded quite spectacular.” Walter allowed himself a small smile and Alex fidgeted, shaking her head.
“It was nothing to be proud of, nothing to boast about. I didn’t do it for the glory of besting him, I did it because I have a score to settle. I’ll not let myself succumb to death until I see him punished for his crimes.”
“Was he the one that turned you?” Seras flushed, seemingly embarrassed by her own question. Alex smiled weakly at her.
“No, Seras. I wasn’t turned, it was an accident.” Alex turned, walking over to the gazebo, taking a seat under it’s small roof. “Shortly after I left the Vatican, Hugue and I had taken a break in the south of France. I was pregnant with the boys, but we still exterminated the rogue Methuselah we met along the way. It was a miscalculation, nothing more. I thought he was a Methuselah, until he wrapped me in shadows. Hugue had been knocked unconscious and I had no way out. He drank from me until I could feel my heart slowing, my body growing heavy. The nanomachines took over after that. I blacked out for a short time, but when I came to, I was drinking from him. Normally, a Crusnik merely absorbs the victim’s blood, summons it by sheer will. We can absorb it by feeding, but it needn’t be done that way. I was feeding gluttonously and he was whispering, his voice fading. I thought he was delirious. I passed out again and when I awoke, Hugue had gotten us back to the hotel. He was torn up pretty bad, but I’d already finished healing. I awoke to a burning in my veins, a terrible burning ache. It was like becoming a Crusnik all over again. I thought I had been injured too badly in battle. I thought I was losing my babies.” Alex’s expression looked stricken, her hand drifting unconsciously to her belly. The trio fell silent as Alex cleared the dark memories from her mind.
“What did he say to you? Do you even know who he was?”
“Oh, yes, I know who he was. I knew him, inside and out, the second his blood touched my lips. He was so quiet I almost couldn’t hear him. His last try, I finally made out the words: ‘what a lovely child’. He was old. Not as old or nearly as powerful as Alucard, but he was old.” Alex’s expression softened as though she were recalling a fond memory.
“So, he intended to kill you then?” Walter’s monocle glinted as he spoke.
“Yes. He didn’t see me for what I was, nor I him. His last meal gave him the worst case of indigestion he’d ever experienced.” Alex smiled, but the action didn’t reach her eyes.
“Who was he?” Seras’ voice was the barest whisper, as though she were asking something sacrilegious in the middle of Sunday mass.
“He was my Master, Miss Victoria. My unwitting Master.”
“And the hatred for this Von Kämpfer? Where did it come from?” Alex regarded Walter with a curious expression.
“He murdered my husband and my happiness. Happy hunting, Ms. Victoria, Mr. Dornez.” Alex turned and walked into the darkness of the gardens, leaving the Vampires to stare after her with a mixture of awe and sadness.
Alex found her meal quickly, feeding from him in the shadows. She allowed him to stalk her, reading his mind as they walked along a darkened alley. He was plotting ways to defile and ravage her, completely unaware that she was going to turn the tables on him. She read a little of his soul like an open book, finding grievous misdeeds, many worthy of death. Satisfied that she’d found a proper target, she drained him slowly, savoring the flavor of his young blood. Alex bid him repent before she finished him, but he refused. She felt a whisper of guilt as she left his body on the front steps of a hospital.
As she wandered back toward the Vatican, she decided to make a very bold move. She listened to the sound of her heels clicking on the cobblestoned street, scanning the area for any unwelcome guests with her keen senses. She detected nothing, and so, opened her mind, sending a message in a taunting sing-song voice.
“Isaak... Isaak.... Where have you run off to, Isaak? Have you crawled back to Cain yet? Do you understand now that I have the power to destroy you? I’m ready to take your life whenever you’re ready to make another appearance, you skulking rat. I will so enjoy draining the life from you. Come out, come out, wherever you are...”
Alex put her mental defenses back up as she hopped back over the garden gate, disappearing into one of the Vatican’s countless corridors.
Isaak gasped, sitting up in his bed, his eyes sweeping the darkness in his room. Just as the thundering in his ears quieted a fraction, he heard another ghostly whisper. He sat back on shaky arms as he realized she was calling to him across the distance, her voice only present in his mind. Isaak listened to her threat, noting the taunting tone that mimicked his own whenever he found someone totally within his power. He had half a mind to respond, but as her voice trailed off, he felt her presence abruptly leave. He laid back in bed, grinding his teeth, realizing that he wasn’t yet strong enough to retaliate.
Abel had been waiting at Alex’s room after she tucked all the children in. He smiled warmly, wrapping his arms around her tightly, locking her in a heated kiss. She pulled away, a weak smile barely lighting her features.
“Alex, what is it?”
“Nothing, I’m just... tired.” She finished her sentence rather lamely, unable to meet Abel’s eyes.
“Has something happened? You’re not feeling guilty, are you?”
“No, I just...” Alex felt her stomach turn and she couldn’t quite find a way to articulate what she was feeling.
“Was is the feeding?” Alex bit her lip, nodding. She hoped Abel wouldn’t try to see into her thoughts, read the true emotions that were running through her mind.
“It always makes me feel a little... sullied.”
“I understand. Now’s not the time. We don’t have to do anything you don’t want to.” Abel pulled her close and nuzzled into her hair, kissing her temple. Alex allowed herself to relax into his embrace, but only for a few moments. It was hard to deny the gentle pull of his comforting aura, but she didn’t want any unwitting looks into her dreams tonight. She pulled away from him, kissing him tenderly.
“Abel, maybe tonight’s not the best night.”
“Oh.” He couldn’t quite keep all the hurt from his voice and Alex felt another stab of guilt. “Well, I don’t want to impose.”
“Abel, it’s not like that. It’s not about imposing, it’s just that... I’m not in the right mood to be close to you. When I’m in a brooding mood, I can’t always keep my thoughts to myself. I don’t want you to be around that.”
“Are you sure, Alexandra? Wouldn’t company lighten your spirits?”
“A good night’s sleep would do me better, I think. It’s nothing personal. I’m still working on controlling my mind.”
“Well, all right. If you change your mind, I’m just down the hall. Please, don’t hesitate, if you need anything, call on me.” Alex nodded, throwing her arms around his neck as she graced him with another dizzying kiss. He smiled, his angst somewhat quelled and left for his own chambers.
An hour or so later, Alex lay in bed, her thoughts still chasing each other around in her head. She felt her guilt renewed now that she had time to stop and think about Hugue and his killer. Anger welled inside her as her thoughts dwelled on The Magician. Then she fell back to Abel, feeling another shock of guilt for sending him from her bed tonight. She knew he expected things to be the way they were before, but she knew that on nights like these it was better for everyone that she sleep alone. More than anything, she felt a keen longing for Abel’s embrace, but knew she couldn’t risk something slipping that she didn’t want slipping. Their relationship was just getting started, and the thought of him rejecting her again made her heart quiver in fear.
She finally fell into a reluctant sleep some time later, kicking the down comforter off in the warmth of the room. She slept in her panties and a tight t-shirt, clutching the flat sheet, her face twitching in her sleep. She barely stirred when a few pale slender fingers reached out to brush the hair off her face.
“Alexandra.” She turned onto her back, a small noise escaping her lips. Those graceful fingers pulled the sheet away from her body slowly, and her brows furrowed. “That’s it, dearest, wake up.”
“Hmm.” Alex turned and nuzzled into the hand that had prodded her awake, completely oblivious to the weight that had settled at her side.
“Alexandra.”
Alex opened her eyes, but they were still fuzzy from sleep. She caught a flash of gold in the moonlight and reached out toward the voice that had called to her.
“Cen, is that you?” Her voice was raspy with sleep, but the chuckle that came from the body at her side, drove sleep from her mind completely. Without a word, she sat up and scooted to the far end of the bed.
“Now now, is that how you treat your Master, Alex?” Alex blinked, sure her mind was playing tricks on her, or else delivering her a horrible nightmare. Her son sat on the edge of her bed wearing nothing but a pair of boxer shorts and a grin that was not his own. She didn’t see her own eyes looking back at her, but a pair of brilliantly blue eyes, just like Abel’s, just like his Father’s.
“C-Cendricus?”
“No, Alexandra. Surely you remember my voice?” Her son was crawling across the bed towards her, a distinctly heated look painting his features. Alex was rooted to the spot, her heart thumping wildly in her chest.
“No... No, I don’t believe it.”
“Oh, but you should. Do I not evoke the same reaction in you? I can see you trembling, hear your heart pounding.”
“C-Cendricus, please... Th-This isn’t funny.” Alex found herself stuttering, the mad fluttering of her heart causing her to choke on her words.
“Cendricus, my son... My wonderful son has been kind enough to lend me his youthful body, so that I might pay you a midnight visit.”
“No... No, it isn’t true! This is a bad dream. A nightmare.”
“What an awful thing to say!” Her son adopted a hurt expression, one she’d seen more times than she’d cared to. She came up level with her, his fingers ghosting over the nearly bare skin of her hip. Alex drew in a shuddering breath, pushing against her son. To her horror, she couldn’t move him, even with all her strength. “Alexandra, I expected better than this. Surely you realize that it’s within my power to possess my own son? He does carry my nanomachines, after all.”
“Stay away from me.”
“Why would I want to do that?” Those wandering fingers came up to cup her breast and Alex’s face flamed in shame.
“Jesus! Don’t do this to me, to our son!”
“Don’t you think he’d enjoy it, Alex? Don’t you think either of your sons have thought of you that way? There hasn’t been a single man in your life whose attention wasn’t held fast by your beauty.”
“That’s disgusting!” Alex’s words came in a pained hiss, blood tears rolling down her cheeks as her trembling redoubled.
“But surely the body doesn’t matter. It is merely a younger version of my own. Besides, this is the soul that gave you a new life, the soul of the man that covets you eternally.”
“No, stop this.”
In the next moment, Alex found herself pinned beneath her son, his fingers now like iron shackles, holding her wrists hostage. His hair spilled forward, tickling her cheeks. Alex’s heart was thundering so loudly she was sure it would burst. Try as she might, she couldn’t find her voice.
“Mmm, don’t you remember this, Alex? All those nights we spent, locked in one another’s arms? Don’t you remember the way I trained your body to desire my own?”
“You’re disgusting!” She could only whisper, horrified.
“You don’t honestly believe that. You wanted me as much as I wanted you. You cried my name as you found bliss under my ministrations. Nobody commanded that, Alex, you did it on your own.”
"No, I did no such thing!”
“You lie to yourself, but we both know the truth, Alex. We both know you loved me, wanted me...” Her sons lips hovered over hers and just as he leaned in to press them to hers, she screamed, for all she was worth.
“ABEL!” She twisted and writhed in her son’s stony grasp, panicking as his features melted into a cold fury.
“Look what you’ve done! You’ve gone and ruined our first chance to be together.” Inexplicably, his features softened into a wicked grin. “No matter. You will be mine, Alexandra. I am coming for you. Right nasty thing, what you did to my Magician, but no matter. He has recovered and we’re coming for you.”
Abel came bursting through her bedroom door, splintering the solid wood like so many toothpicks. He tore Cen off of her by the scruff and pulled the boy up to look him in the face. A pair of cold blue eyes, remarkably like his own, gazed back at him. A cruel chuckle made the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end.
“There is nowhere you could take her that I wouldn’t find her.” Abel dropped the boy, narrowly suppressing the urge to hit him. As he landed on the floor with an indignant oompf, Alex scrambled off the bed, toward the door. Her breath was coming in great gasps and she felt like she still wasn’t taking in enough oxygen.
“Alex, wait!” Abel moved to follow her, but she backed away, shaking her head, her eyes wide in shock.
Alex bumped into a solid body and shrieked, covering her head and cowering as though she’d stepped on a landmine.
“What is it, what’s going on?” Seras and Walter skidded to a halt just behind Alucard, the three of them taking in the scene. Abel quickly threw a robe over Alexandra who continued to scoot away from everyone, the sound of her heartbeat nearly deafening to all present.
“Alex, please, you have to calm down. It’s me, it’s Abel.”
“No! I can’t tell!” Alex had managed to weasel into the robe, just as Tres and Leon came running down the end of the hallway. Alex moaned in dismay, gripping her head as though she thought it may explode at any moment.
"What is it, what’s wrong with her?” Alucard’s voice was sharp and demanding.
“Mom?” Cendricus had stumbled out of her room, rubbing his eyes as though he’d been woken from a very deep sleep. Everyone but Abel turned and looked at him in complete shock.
“Alexandra?” Tres reached out to help her up from the ground and she bared her fangs at him, her claws elongating. He backed away, his hands held up in surrender.
“Has she gone mad?” Alucard’s voice wasn’t as sharp, but held more concern.
Alex’s eyes roved around the circle of faces wildly, focusing on the members of Hellsing. She scooted a few inches towards them, her eyes still wide with terror.
“S-S-Seras?” Her lower lip trembled as she examined the faces of her own teammates.
“Yes, Lady Watteau! I’m here.” Seras tried to flash her most comforting smile, but the gesture went unnoticed.
“Lady Watteau... Yes, that’s right...” Alex’s voice was quiet, bewildered.
Abel kneeled in front of her, his hands raised where she could see them.
“Alexandra de Watteau. You are at the Vatican, with your fellow AX members, your children, and the members of Hellsing.” Alex nodded almost imperceptibly, calming somewhat. Abel tried to creep a little closer to her, but she scooted even further away.
“Abel?” Her voice was trembling, as was the rest of her.
“Yes, Alexandra, it’s me.”
“Tell me something only we know.” The rest of the group looked around for the meaning behind this curious request, but no one had an answer, silent or otherwise.
“You got your first ear piercings when you were very young, the second pair when you were in your teens, and another piercing for every major achievement after that. You have thirteen in all.”
“Oh, God.” Alex launched herself at Abel who covered her up properly with the robe, holding her tight as she balled up in his arms.
“Is Lady Watteau all right?” Seras was biting her nail anxiously.
“She’ll be fine, she’s just had a fright. Tres, call Lady Catherina, won’t you? Cendricus, go back to bed, I’ll come talk to you when your Mother’s settled down.”
The boy nodded and promptly retreated to his room, too shocked to ask any real questions at that point anyway. Tres left to follow his orders and Leon shook his head as Abel carried a still sobbing Alexandra off to his room. Alucard wore a thoroughly disconcerted look as Leon retreated to his own room.
“That poor woman.” Walter was busy pulling off the gloves he’d donned, ready for a siege.
“I can only imagine what brought that on.” Seras had her hands balled up together, chewing a thumb in concern.
“Perhaps we should have researched this team a little bit more. The lovely Lady Watteau screams for help in the dead of night, chased by her sleepwalking son, and refuses help from any of her dearest comrades? My my... Curiouser and curiouser...” Alucard’s trademark grin was absent as he melted into the wall at his side.
“I do hope she’s all right.”
“Nothing we can do about it now, Seras. Let Abel handle it. We’ll get some answers in the morning. I can’t believe how hard her heart was beating. A mortal woman would have died from that kind of fright.”
“Then it’s a damn good thing she’s something else.”
BTW, I posted new chapters on BTG, esoteric, and beautiful cruelty if anyone wants to know!
