Chapter 3: Running For What I Believe In

Birthday party, forget it. I spent my tenth birthday with two Pokemon and nothing more. I sighed and looked at Squirtle. He had grown since when I found him and he was a full adult Squirtle. Me, I had grown taller myself and discovered that with age that I had new powers. Clothes appeared on my body one morning and I had to admit, they were a lot better fe toe to wear than anything else. I had a royal blue strapless top that stopped below my breasts and a bikini bottom the same color. A fishnet skirt was around my waist and I now went barefoot. I had a gold ankle bracelet on one ankle and an armband on my right arm. Around my neck as usual was the blue seastone that kept me who I was. My auburn hair had grown longer and my eyes had the same sparkle in them. I had grown into quite a beauty.
But I was ten years old. I could become a Pokemon Trainer!
I sighed and stood up walking to a window as Squirtle followed me. I moved the curtains and studied outside. James was talking to a girl with long red hair and wore a strange uniform. It wasn\'t until she turned around that I recongized it. \"Team Rocket,\" I whispered. \"Why would James want anything to do with those idiots?\" He shook hands with the girl and walkack ack inside. \"Kari!\" he called. \"I am right here,\" I answered. \"I finally got a new job that I can support us better,\" he said proudly. \"I\'m joining Team Rocket!\"
\"What?\" I asked in shock. \"Those guys steal Pokemon! Why would you want anything to do with them?\" \"They make good pay,\" he said seriously. \"I have you to support, remember?\" I sighed and frowned as I walked off. Later that afternoon, I studied the newspaper clipping I had saved about Professor Oak. He was my hero, my idol. \"If only I could meet him,\" I sighed and put it back in my desk. James entered my room without knocking as usual. Squirtle looked ready to attack him, but I held him back. \"You\'re ten years old now,\" he said nodding. \"You\'ve grown up on me.\" \"James, I wanted to ask you something since I\'m ten now,\" I said. \"Go ahead,\" he said sitting down. \"I want to be a Pokemon Trainer,\" I said finally. \"I\'m the right age to be one and Professor Oak can help me.\"
He studied me for a moment before laughing hard. \"I don\'t see the humor in this,\" I said narrowing my eyes. \"You kids these days,\" he said once he recovered. \"You think you can do things now. Kari, i don\'t think you\'ll be doing such a thing. You\'re not capable of such silly thoughts and dreams.\" I was crushed. He put me and my dreams down and I turned my head with a heavy sigh. \"Forget I said anything,\" I whispered. He smiled and left the room. \"Get ready because tomorrow, we\'ll be the best Pokemon snatchers in the world!\" he said happily behind his shoulder. I looked at Squirtle and shook my head. \"Pokemon aren\'t meant for that,\" I said rubbing his head gently. Then I had an idea. \"If he thinks he can force me into that life, he has another thought coming,\" I said firmly. \"We\'re leaving tonight, Squirtle.\" \"Squirtle, Squirtle!\" he answered happily and jumped in my arms hugging me.
At dinner, I had to act like nothing was w. In. In fact, I was rather silent to keep from saying anything I didn\'t want to come out. After the night chores were done, I walked upstairs to take a bath alone. But once I locked that bathroom door, I looked at Squirtle and nodded. I started the water and sloopenopened the bathroom window while standing on the ledge and slipped outside in the darkness. I poked my head inside and grabbed Squirtle in my arms. \"Shh,\" I whispered as we slid on the roof walking silently toward the drain pipe on the side of the house. Just then, a light came on in a room. I gasped quietly and ducked away from the window holding Squirtle close with my hand over his mouth. I was shaking with fear, but my courage kicked in. James closed the curtains and the light went off. I sighed with relief and hurried as fast as I could before I was noticed. I climbed down the pipe and landed on the ground. I looked toward the woods knowing it was too risky to go for. The ocean would be my way out. I ran down the beach and dove in the water feeling my legs turn into my fish tail and my clothes disappear as a pair of pink seashells covered my chest. \"That was close!\" I said with relief. \"Come on, Squirtle.\" We swam off for the Pallet Town docks. We decided to spend the night underwater until morning.
The next morning, I climbed a ladder returning to my human form and grabbed Squirtle as we ran toward Professor Oak\'s home. I walked through the gate and headed uphill to his front steps. I rang the doorbell and waited for someone to answer. An assistant in a lab coat opened the door. \"Is Professor Oak in?\" I asked. He didn\'t say anything since he was too busy studying what I had on. \"Excuse me?\" I asked sharply. He came back to his senses and nodded. \"Come with me,\" he said and I followed him inside to a lab. Pokemon were everywhere and I gasped at them. \"Wow!\" I said in shock. \"Professor Oak,\" the man said. \"This girl is here to see you.\" A man turned around and I saw myself staring face to face with the man who I knew would give me a chance to let my greatest dreams come true.
\"My name is Kari,\" I said extending my hand to shake his. \"Nice to finally meet you, Professor Oak.\" He shook my hand and smiled. \"I take it you\'re wanting to be a Pokemon Trainer,\" he said. \"Yes sir,\" i said nodding. \"I already have one that I raised since he was a baby.\" He looked at Squirtle and nodded. \"He looks very healthy too,\" he said. \"Do you have experience in training Pokemon?\" I shook my head sadly. \"I\'ve lived with them as a small child in the ocean,\" I said. \"What do you mean by that?\" he asked in confusion. I bit my lower lip and sighed. \"Come with me,\" I said finding a small pool outside. \"Can you see underwater in this thing?\" He nodded. \"Go there and you\'ll see what I mean,\" I said as I dove in the water. Squirtle followed behind me and I swam to a window to find a very shocked professor staring at me in shock. I surfaced and pulled myself out as he walked to me. \"Incredable!\" he said. \"You\'re a mermaid!\" \"the last of my kind, I\'m afraid,\" I sighed. \"Oh yes,\" he said his looks becoming somber. \"I heard what happened. It was a sad day for the ocean. It took forever to clean up that mess and arrest those men.\" \"The human I stayed with was like living that fate,\" I said seriously. \"He didn\'t understand about me wanting to do this. He wanted me to join Team Rocket with him, but I refused and ran away last night so that I could do what I want and that is to be a Pokemon Trainer and one day a Master.\" He nodded firmly. \"And that you will,\" he said seriously. \"I have an idea. Why don\'t you stay awile and learn more about Pokemon? You can start your journey a little later than usual, but believe me, it\'ll be worth your while.\" I nodded smiling. \"Don\'t think of me just as your teacher,\" he said. \"Think of me as the human father you never had.\" I grinned hugging him.
\"All trainers get a new Pokemon when they begin,\" he said and handed me a red and white ball. \"This is a PokeBall,\" he explained. \"Inside is a new Pokemon waiting to meet you.\" \"Ok,\" I said and released a Charmander! \"This is Charmander,\" he explained. \"He\'s a Fire Pokemon.\" Squirtle sniffed the new Pokemon causing Charmander to flee into my arms shaking uncontrollably. \"Why is he doing this?\" I asked in confusion. \"He thinks Squirtle might put out the flame on his tail,\" Professor Oak explained. \"That flame is his life source. If it goes out, he could be in danger.\" I smiled and stroked Charmander\'s head. \"He won\'t hurt you,\" I assured him. \"Squirtle wants to be your friend.\" Charmander looked at me with his green eyes and walked to Squirtle. The two sniffed each other and soon became instant best friends. \"That\'s a relief,\" I said smiling. \"Kari, you have much to learn about the world of Pokemon,\" Professor Oak said resting his arm on my shoulders. \"I see great things for you and a life far beyond what you once had. I believe in you, Kari. But you have to believe in yourself and in your Pokemon to become what you want to be in your heart.\" And so that day, I discovered a new world: The World of Pokemon!
