THE BIRDS AND THE BEES | Pt.3
I really need a drink, thought Sano as he ran from the dojo, heading for his
usual watering hole at the edge of Ruffian Row.
"Sano-san, welcome!" Came the proprietor's cry as he burst through
the doors.
"Hiro, I need a jug of sake--quick," Sano tersely muttered as he
slunk to a small room at the rear, where he slumped down onto the mats with
a groan.
That little twerp Yahiko, Sano thought. I could just KILL him for starting
all this! Even as he fumed, he had to concede that Yahiko didn't force him to
grab Kaoru and kiss her like he did. He had to be man enough to admit that he'd
always been a little curious about Kaoru and had used this opportunity to taste
the forbidden fruit. Well, sort of forbidden fruit.
The attraction between Kaoru and Kenshin was an open secret, but he knew for
a fact that nothing had happened between them yet. The way Kaoru acted when
he kissed her... Well, it was evident that she'd never been kissed like that
before. It all made him wonder about Kenshin's true feelings--if he was interested
in her, why wasn't he showing it? Leading the poor girl on like that. It was
just all too much for him to think about at the moment, and he wondered where
the hell that sake was...
"Sano-san, are you all right?" The proprietor, Hiro, was standing
in front of him with a jug of sake, wondering why his friend was looking so
strange.
"Fine, fine, I'm just fine; just gimme that jug," Sano grabbed the
container out of Hiro's hands and had raised it to his lips before the cork
had time to hit the floor. Sano started gulping down its contents as if it were
water, making Hiro very worried.
"Hey, easy there, Sano--what the hell's the matter with you?" Hiro
had never seen him like this. If he didn't know any better, he would've said
the young man was distraught.
In between gulps, Sano managed, "I'm...just...thirsty, that's all."
When the jug was empty, he let out a prodigious belch and leaned back against
the wall, waiting for the alcohol to take its effect. Ah, blessed release shall
be mine, was his last coherent thought as the world started turning fuzzy.
"I don't think you should be going home like this, Sano," Hiro said,
backing away. "Stay here as long as you need to. There are way too many
guys with grudges against you who'd love to jump you while you're drunk."
As he went back up to the front, he told a waitress to keep an eye on Sano and
make sure he didn't try to leave while he was drunk.

Meanwhile, back at the dojo, Kaoru was still reeling from the kiss that Sano
had planted on her. The kiss that she'd responded to so shamelessly. Putting
a hand on her heated forehead, she groaned. Oh...what was she going to do about
this? She was confused, no doubt about it. If she was in love with Kenshin,
how could she have acted like that with Sano? It was just that he was so...overpowering!
He'd just swept her up and did as he wished with her, no dilly-dallying or sending
out mixed signals for him--he wanted her and he let her know it. It had been
quite thrilling, she thought with chagrin. How the world could change in an
instant. Lost in thought, she didn't see Kenshin coming through the front door.
"Kaoru-dono?" the perplexed greeting snapped Kaoru out of her reverie
and she was face-to-face with the other piece of this bizarre puzzle. Flushing
to the roots of her hair, she felt an overwhelming sense of guilt. She felt
like she'd betrayed Kenshin, but she knew that was crazy--there was absolutely
nothing to betray! And that caused a surge of anger to rise within her--had
there been something to betray, she thought, she never would have betrayed it!
If only Kenshin had given her some kind of a sign, like Sano...
"Kenshin! Hi! Um...I gotta go, OK?" She whirled on her heels and
sped down the hall to her room, needing to sort out all the thoughts spinning
around in her head.
"What the..." Kenshin stood there scratching his head, wondering
what was going on. You just never knew what you were going to come home to around
here, he thought. As he started shuffling off toward the kitchen, he noticed
something on the ground. It was Kaoru's blue hair ribbon.
***
A couple of weeks had passed and Sanosuke hadn't so much darkened the doorstep
of the dojo. Usually he was over at least once a day, looking for food, so his
absence was quite noticeable. Especially to Kaoru. At first she was dreading
the thought of facing him again, but after a few days she was starting to get
worried. She knew he was staying away because of what happened between them,
and while a part of her was relieved, she hated the thought that he might be
gone forever.
"Hey, where the heck's Sano been lately?" Yahiko wondered out loud
during one of their practice sessions.
Kaoru's heart started beating faster at the mention of his name and she tried
to be nonchalant. "S-Sano? Why do you ask?"
Yahiko looked over at her as if she was incredibly dense and said, "Well,
considering that he's been coming over here every day for like the past
year, don't you think it's kind of weird that he hasn't been here once in over
two weeks?" He paused to think back on when he last saw Sano and
continued, "Come to think of it, he hasn't been over since that afternoon,
when I...um...you know, told you that thing--that I apologized for, by the way!--and
you guys got in a huge argument. We haven't seen him since that day! Kaoru,
did you piss him off for good? Is he ever going to come back?"
Sighing, Kaoru put down her bokken and said, "I don't know, Yahiko. Something...did
happen. I think I need to talk to him."
"Well you better do it soon, 'cause I...miss him, and I know you and Kenshin
do too!"
"Yeah...I guess I do miss that idiot," Kaoru said, mentally adding,
you have no idea how much. In the past two weeks, she'd definitely noticed a
shift in her feelings toward Kenshin. While she still felt love for him, his
face wasn't the only one that occupied her dreams anymore. She'd had more than
a few nights where she'd woken up sweaty and hot, having dreamed about the kiss
she and Sano had shared. She didn't know if what she felt for Sano was love;
it was more like a physical craving, like needing to eat or sleep. She'd never
felt that way about anyone--even Kenshin. She'd been trying to sort of provoke
Kenshin these past two weeks, leaning in closer when they talked or ate, brushing
against him when they passed in the halls, and trying not to bonk him on the
head so often. All to no avail--he was always the same polite and deferential
Kenshin, and it was driving her crazy!
"Yahiko, I'm going over to find Sano and have a talk with him," Kaoru
declared. When she saw Yahiko put down his wooden sword to come with her, she
added, "I think I need to go alone. I'm sorry, but this is between me and
Sano, OK?"
Yahiko looked at her suspiciously, but for once didn't give her a hard time.
"OK, but be careful, all right? He doesn't live in the best area..."
"Don't worry, I'll be fine," Kaoru said, heading to her room to change.
***
Another shitty day, thought Sano, heading home from a disastrous bout of gambling.
He'd been trying to lose himself in various distractions ever since that afternoon
with Kaoru, but nothing was working. He just couldn't get her out of his mind.
He'd tried being with other women since then, but it never got far, his mind
always preoccupied with the fact that the woman he was with wasn't Kaoru. There
had actually been a horribly embarrassing episode where he'd cried out her name
while fondling another woman and had received a resounding smack in the face
for it.
Ah, it's no use, he thought, I need to go back to the dojo and straighten things
out with her or I'm gonna lose some of the best friends I've ever had. His steps
quickened on the darkened streets, eager to get home and get some much-needed
rest before the dreaded confrontation he planned for the next day.
All of a sudden, he heard a woman scream. It sounded like it was coming from
just around the corner. He ran toward the sound, hoping he wasn't too late.
The sight that greeted him chilled him to the bone. Five men were circled around
a woman unconscious on the ground, guffawing and clapping each other on the
back, one of them loosening the ties of his hakama.
"Hold it right there, scumbags!" Sano shouted. Without giving them
any further warning, he plowed toward the group and started swinging, eager
for the feel of flesh and bone against his fists. He dispatched the would-be
rapist first, with a hard right that sent the man's head snapping back and a
quick left toward his stomach that had him flying toward the wall of a nearby
building. He ducked down to avoid the swing of an arm and punched him hard in
the chest, feeling the man's ribs cracking under his fist. He grinned in pleasure
at the sound and launched himself up in the air to deliver simultaneous kicks
in the face to two more of the men. Noses bleeding profusely, they crumbled
to the ground. Sano was now face-to-face with the last one, who was brandishing
a sword.
"This ain't none of your business, asshole. I don't appreciate you interfering,"
the man said through thin, cruel-looking lips.
Sano retorted, "It is my business when someone doesn't play fair.
Five men against one unarmed woman, does that sound fair to you?" Sano's
directed his unrelenting gaze at the man, prepared to pummel the criminal into
the ground.
"Well, if you wanna get technical about it, she was armed--even
if it was with a toy wooden sword."
"Huh? A wooden..." Sano's eyes flicked over to the woman on the ground
and saw to his horror that it was Kaoru. He felt an indescribable rage flow
through him at the realization and his hands itched to strangle the life out
of the man responsible. Momentarily distracted, he didn't see that the man had
started to charge and barely managed to avoid the man's sword as it came toward
his face. Sano felt a sting across his cheek and a warmth flow down. His body
going into autopilot, he fluidly avoided the man's return swing and delivered
a crushing high kick to the man's head, sending him swiftly to the ground. Sano
was on him in an instant, grabbing the front of the man's gi to lift his whole
upper body off the ground and proceeded to calmly and methodically beat the
man's head into a bloody pulp. The man babbled pleas and apologies while he
was able to, but soon he was limp and unconscious in Sano's hand.
Breathing hard, Sano looked down at the mess and disgustedly threw him on the
ground. He rushed over to where Kaoru lay and saw that she didn't seem to have
suffered any other damage than a knock to the head. He gently picked her up
in his arms and headed for his home, just a few houses down. What the hell was
she doing here at this time of night? He wondered, heart pounding and full of
anxiety. He thought of what could've happened to her and his arms tightened
around her slight form. Please be all right, Kaoru, he prayed.
