Chapter 3
Dee stalked angrily into and and Ryo’s office, slamming the door forcefully, causing random objects in the room to rattle. Ryo raised his hands from their resting place on his clasped hands and shot a glare at his lover. "What the hell is your problem?" Ryo ground out icily.
Dee pulled out a cigarette from the pack in his pocket and lit it furiously. Ryo scowled, knowing Dee’s nerves had to be tightly wound for him to be smoking. The dark-haired man inhaled the smoke and blew it out quickly. "Jesus, Ryo, can you be that fucking oblivious? You should know why the hell I’m mad!" Dee spat out. "You know what’s going to happen once that bastard gets you alone!"
Ryo stood up quickly, fuming. "Oh, and that’s my fault? God, Dee, you’re acting like I wanted this to happen!" Ryo yelled.
"Well, I certainly didn’t hear any objections! The least you could have done was say something to that bastard’s face! It’s like you don’t even care what the fuck happens!" Dee raged on.
"What the hell did you expect me to say, Dee? ‘Sorry, Commissioner Rose, I’m afraid I cannot work on this case with you because I don’t have permission’? Dee, I am not putting my job on the line because you’re paranoid and don’t have an ounce of trust in me!" Ryo argued.
"You think I don’t trust you? Jesus, Ryo, it’s him I don’t trust! You saw the look in his eyes…he’s lusting over you, Ryo, and you know it! Never mind the fact I told him we were engaged, he still looked like he was up to something!" Dee yelled, puffing on his cigarette one last time before putting it out and lighting another one.
"God, Dee, calm down! If you had even the slightest bit of trust in me, you wouldn’t be acting like this!"
"Hell, Ryo! I can’t help it that I’m mad! Wouldn’t you be acting this way if the roles were reversed and that jerk-off had his mind set on getting me into this pants?" Dee sneered.
That last statement hit Ryo hard. A look of sadness came over his eyes as it sunk in. "No, Dee," Ryo said quietly. "I would not be acting like that at all, because I trust you with all of my heart and soul and knew you wouldn’t give into any of his advances…just like I’m not going to. I thought you had more faith in me than that, Dee." Tears slowly filled his eyes, but the blond-haired man blinked them away before Dee could see them. "Now, if you’ll excuse me, I believe I have to get home and get ready for tomorrow." Not even saying good-bye to Dee, Ryo walked out the door without even as much as a glance towards Dee’s direction.
But Ryo had been wrong…Dee had seen the tears forming in Ryo’s eyes. It was enough to have him stricken with guilt. "God, what an ass I am," Dee said aloud. He sat down and buried his face in his hands. "I shouldn’t have treated Ryo like that…he didn’t do anything wrong in the least." Deciding he needed to make it up to Ryo, Dee smiled as some ideas formed in his head. He would show Ryo just how sorry he was and how much he did trust him. Dee picked up the phone and began to dial a number, beginning to put his plan into action.
*****
Ryo drove home angrily, many thoughts filling his mind. He was in still in shock at what had transpired between the two of them. It was true, he hated the fact that Berkley had obviously set this up, but Christ, it wasn’t his fault! Couldn’t Dee see that, or was he that blind with jealousy? Ryo smacked the steering wheel in frustration. If he could change the way things were set up at the moment, he would. But he just couldn’t risk losing his job over it.
The events of the meeting this afternoon ran their course through Ryo’s memory. He had seen the way Berkley was ogling him, and the way Dee was glaring at Berkley. He also hadn’t missed the smug look Berkley tossed in Dee’s direction, plainly showing that the man may be up to something. Despite what Dee might think, he was not an idiot, and could see how much Berkley lusted over him. But there was no way in hell he would let Berkley get the upper hand and risk losing Dee. He loved him too damn much for him to let anything even risk ruining their relationship.
Before Ryo knew it, he found his car parked in the parking garage of his and Dee’s apartment. He sighed in frustration, wishing he could think of an excuse that could get him out this situation. But no matter what he came up with, he knew Berkley wouldn’t believe it. He just had to face the facts: he was stuck in this predicament and there was nothing he could do about it. He just hoped Dee would have faith in him and know he wouldn’t ever cheat on him…not with Berkley, nor with anyone else for that matter.
Ryo trudged up the steps and entered the apartment, kicking off his shoes and flopping down on the couch, exhausted. Ryo closed his eyes, just wanting everything to flee his mind as quickly as it had come. He knew he would have to deal with all of this again when Dee came home tonight, but now he just wanted to take a nap and let his worries leave him, even if just for a few short hours.
*****
Several raps on the door roused Ryo from his peaceful sleep. Cursing quietly, he got up from the comfortable spot on the couch and looked through the peephole to see who could possibly be at the door. Ryo’s eyes widened in curiosity as he saw someone who appeared to be holding a bouquet of roses at the door. He unlatched the lock and opened the door, greeting the visitor with a groggy "Can I help you?"
The gentleman smiled at him. "Ryo MacLean?" Ryo nodded as he was handed the flowers. "For you, sir. Enjoy." The man then turned and left, leaving Ryo stng tng there, puzzled.
Ryo took the flowers inside and set them on the kitchen table. It was then that he spotted the card sticking out of the vase of flowers. Ryo reached for the card, opening it and reading it aloud.
Ryo,
I know I acted like a fool, so I wanted to make it up to you. I want you to know that I do trust you, and I hope you believe that I trust you too. That is why I want you to meet me by the waterfront on 59th and 7th (Author’s Note: I have no idea if such a place exists, I’ve only been to New York a few times and have never heard of such a place, or even the street for that matter. It’s just a figment of my imagination ^_~) at 7:00 pm for a surprise. If you do believe that in my heart I do trust you, you will be there. If you don’t show up, Iw I w I will have to work damned hard to think of another way to prove to you that my trust and love for you still burns strong. See you tonight…hopefully.
Love,
Dee
Ryo smiled, remembering the night Dee had confessed his love for him at that very spot. Ryo glanced at the clock and noticed it was 6:30. Ryo quickly scribbled a note for Bikky, letting him know he wouldn’t be home for dinner tonight and leaving some money on the table for a pizza, he left the apartment and drove in the direction of the waterfront, all the time wondering just what Dee had in mind for them tonight.
*****
Ryo noticed Dee’s car as he pulled into the parking lot of the waterfront. Looking at his car’s clock and noticing it was 7 on the dot, Ryo got out and stretched, the sweet smell of the water invading his nostrils. Ryo loved the smell of the water at the waterfront, and thought that it was the perfect spot for a romantic night. ‘Apparently, so does Dee,’ Ryo mused, remembering the many times they had come there when either of them had been in a romantic mood.
Ryo looked around, hoping to spot Dee around there somewhere along the sandy coast of the waterfront. Spotting a small light flickering in the distance, Ryo followed his instincts and walked towards the direction of the flame. As he got closer, he noticed it was the tiny flame of a candle. He smiled as he reached the spot where the candle was and saw Dee sitting near it, his face aglow with the light from the candle.
"Hello, Ryo. Glad you believe that I do trust you," Dee greeted, standing up and taking Ryo’s wrists. Ryo smiled as he allowed Dee to pull him into his arms, melting into the kiss Dee placed on his lips. "Sorry to have exploded like that, baby."
"It’s okay, Dee. I just think we need to clarify a few things so this incident doesn’t happen again," Ryo stated, sitting on the sand with Dee, snuggling up close to the man he loved.
"I agree with you 100 percent. Which is why I figured we could talk things over right here, as we have dinner here on the beach by candlelight," Dee said as he revealed a picnic basket filled with tiny sandwiches, some wine, and a strawberry shortcake for dessert.
"Sounds like a great plan to me," Ryo smiled. Dee could be so romantic at times, especially when he knew he had messed up. He always redeemed himself in the sweetest of ways. Sure, Dee could be pigheaded, but when it came down to it, he wasn’t afraid to admit he had made a mistake, and was quick to apologize for it.
As the two sat there, sipping at their wine and eating, Dee was the first to speak up. "Baby, I didn’t mean to come across to you as untrusting today. I guess my muddled thoughts got the best of me, and I wasn’t really thinking clearly about what I was saying," Dee explained softly. "You know how I can get…my temper really isn’t one of my better attributes."
"I understand completely, Dee. Which is why I wish you would think things through sometimes without just blurting them out like that. It could cause a lot of trouble, as you can see from this afternoon," Ryo replied.
Dee nodded. "I know, Ryo. Which is why I have thought things over, and what I really wanted to tell you was this: I know you wouldn’t let Berkley hit on you, and I trust you completely. I had no right to explode on you like that. I’m just worried that the idiot might try to pull something. I know he has in the past, but with me out of the picture, he might try to go a little further this time. I’m just scared for you, baby. I don’t want him to hurt you in any way. I know how sensitive you can be at times, and I’m not saying it’s a bad thing! Not in any way, Ryo. But I think Berkley senses this, and he might think you may be vulnerable to him. I just want you to be careful, Ryo."
"I know, Dee," Ryo began. "But I promise you that I won’t let him persuade me into anything. I am going to make it clear to him that the only reason I am there is business, and I have no intention on betraying you. If he even tries to lay a finger on me, I will punch him so hard he won’t know what hit him. And if he tries to fire me because of it, he’ll haveastyasty sexual harassment suit on his hands." Ryo smiled. "I’ve thought everything through, Dee. I am aware of what may happen, and am fully prepared for it. And I promise you, I will have my cell phone with me the whole time and will check in with you every night. I’ll be okay, I promise," Ryo reassured Dee.
"I know. I shouldn’t have accused you of those horrible things. Forgive me?" Dee asked, brushing his lips softly over Ryo’s.
"Of course, my love. I love you too much to stay mad at you for long," Ryo said as Dee kissed him sweetly.
When the kiss broke, the two of them satthe the beach, listening to the sound of the waves crashing and knowing in their hearts that their love was very strong and could withstand anything thrown in their way. After a few hours, both stood and headed home, not ready to admit that despite the talk they had tonight, they were scared out of their wits, not knowing what Berkley might be capable of.
To Be Continued…
Sap and angst galore! Sorry if this chapter wasn’t any good, but I was in a depressed mood when I wrote it and I know I could have done better. Next chapter will be longer and better, I promise! Please, review!
