Part three: How do you want to die?
Lady Gyokumen Koushu looked down from her throne, “What is it this time, Ni?”
Dr. Ni tilted his head up and stretched his arms out. His white bunny was holding a box, “I have something here that, I think you will enjoy.”
Lady Gyokumen Koushu looked at the box, she did not rise from her throne. “Explain.”
“I beg for the Lady’s indulgence, try as we might, we can’t seem to get the precious little sutra from the blonde priest’s neck. They seem to be able to outfight, outmaneuver and outthink anything we can do. Which makes me wonder if the only one that can beat them is them. “ He cleared his throat. He had her attention, he knew he did good. Bunny spoke, “What if I told you we have a way to make it, so that all we will have to do is find them and pluck it off his lifeless shoulders?” Ni laughed---more at himself than anything else.
Lady Gyokumen Koushu stood up and walked down the steps, “What’s in the box, Ni?”
Bunny opened the box and inside was a black glowing orb. “Death”. Ni snickered, “All we have to do is place this in a spot where they are resting.”
“Fool! You’ve wasted resources, how can we possibly know where they are going to rest?”
He softly giggled, “My lady, they are currently driving down a riverbank. Many of the bridges have washed out, we can destroy the others. Leaving only one particular bridge….”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hakkai looked down the hood of the jeep, paying very close attention to his driving duties. “There’s one!”.
“Finally, “ Sanzo looked at the intact bridge. Being this close to a river for almost two weeks was getting to him. They didn’t dare turn off the bank for fear of never finding a bridge.
Hakkai turned down onto the road that connected to the small wooden bridge. He looked down the road. The road on the other side cut between two cliffs. There was lush greenery on the cliffs and greenery as far back as he could see. “An oasis, what luck. We should have a good source of water, fresh fruit and shade for rest.”
“Fresh fruit? Where?” Goku perked up as thoughts of fruit ran through his head.
“A bath in safe water would be nice”, Gojyo looked at the road dust on his arm, the novelty of driving through sand having long worn away.
They drove across the bridge, between the cliffs and looked for a source of fresh water. They twisted and turned through the forest and found what they were looking for. A small, beautiful, blue lake and aromatic fruit trees. Hakkai scanned the landscape as he got out of the jeep. The lake was flat, of course, but the land on the far side of the lake sloped up. The peak had no trees around it, “That must be a beautiful view.” A gentle wind came down that slope, cooled itself over the water and washed them with comfortable inviting air.
“I’ll go get fruit!” Goku leaped from the jeep and scampered up and down various trees.
With everyone and all the supplies out of the jeep, Hakuryuu transformed. He flapped his wings and landed on Hakkai’s shoulder. He stretched his long neck out and looked at Hakkai, ”Couroour?” He looked at the lake and then back at Hakkai.
Hakkai looked at him, he looked tired, hot and dusty. Hakkai smiled, “Go have fun.”
Hakuryuu jumped off Hakkai’s shoulder and took flight. He circled above the lake and spiraled down into it. He quickly came back up dripping.
Gojyo saw Hakuryuu and walked up to Hakkai, “Is he singing?”
Hakkai lightly laughed through a big smile, “Yes, I think so. What luck!”
Hakkai started building a camp fire and Goku carried armload after armload of fruit to the camp site.
Gojyo grabbed a towel and headed toward the lake. “I’m gonna eat later, when I’m nice and clean.” Sanzo and Hakkai watched him as he walked toward the lake. When he began to remove his clothes, they looked away.
Hakkai looked down at his dust-covered arms, “That sounds like a good idea.”
Sanzo looked at his dusty robes and could feel the dirt on his face, “It isn’t sanitary to eat this dirty.”
Hakkai looked at Sanzo, “Would it be weird if we….” He looked at Gojyo, he was in the water up to his waist.
Sanzo looked at the lake, “It’s a big enough lake.” Sanzo grabbed two towels, “I’m not doing this alone.” He threw one at Hakkai. Sanzo rolled the scripture up and placed it inside his bedroll. He and Hakkai exchanged glances. They took off running; stripping their clothes as they ran. They splashed into the water and without looking at each other took off in separate directions.
Gojyo turned around at the commotion, he had his hands in his wet hair. “Hey, one customer at a time!”
“It’s big enough!” Hakkai joked back.
Goku turned from the fruit and looked at his friends in the water. He looked back at the fruit and looked back at his friends. He had an apple in his mouth. A muffled yell came from him, “You can’t have fun without me!” He dropped the apple and stripped out of his clothes as he ran.
Sanzo made his way to chest-deep water and ducked down leaving only his head out.
Hakkai seemed to be more swimming than bathing.
Gojyo was careful to keep the water level just above his waist, ducking under to wet his upper body.
Goku came charging into the water. He ran over to Gojyo and splashed him.
“Stupid Monkey!” Gojyo splashed back.
“Goku!”, Sanzo yelled. He was already teetering on the breaking point of his hard exterior, he didn’t need the plucky young one pushing him to the point of openly having fun.
Goku spun in the water after hearing Sanzo voice. This caused a wave of water to cascade on top of Sanzo. “What?” Goku asked.
“Stupid Monkey!” Sanzo remembered the fan that was back with his clothes and splashed Goku.
“You missed, monk!” Gojyo turned and shoved water at Sanzo.
Hakkai was swimming under water with his eyes closed, enjoying the freedom that the water had to offer. He heard the water splashing above and figured he needed to check on Gojyo. He swam to the surface, took in a deep breath and opened his eyes. He didn’t see anyone. He turned as Gojyo turned. Hakkai surfaced right behind Gojyo and now the two wet naked men were facing each other, just a foot apart. Hakkai’s mouth dropped open and a nervous laugh escaped him.
“Hakkai, if you wanted to see me naked all you had to do was ask.” Gojyo joked as splashes of water came up over his shoulders.
Hakkai laughed and shoved water at Gojyo. “Remember the rumors!”
“Look but don’t touch, one-eye!” Gojyo splashed back, “I see your eyes are green with envy!”
Sanzo couldn’t tolerate the bad pun and splashed Gojyo.
A full fledged water fight was on. Hakuryuu had even gotten unto the act by finding a shell and, using his talons, he dumped water on heads. Everyone, including Sanzo, was laughing and coughing as water went into their mouths. After ganging up on Goku for starting it, Hakkai spoke through laughter, “Enough, enough, we need to eat.”
The four breathless men waded their way to land, grabbed towels, dried themselves off and got dressed using their clean spare clothing. The walls of modesty had been torn down at least for the moment. For one brief moment, they all got along. Gojyo left his white shirt off, wearing only his sleeveless blue button-up ----unbuttoned.
Sanzo shook his head, “At least we are clean now.”
Hakkai cut up bits of fruit for Hakuryuu.
Gojyo looked at Sanzo, “Do you need to cut up the food for YOUR pet, too?” The moment of civility was gone. Goku threw a piece of fruit at Gojyo. “Thanks, I was wondering how I could get you to hand that to me.” Gojyo wiped the dirt off it and bit into it. “Good stuff.”
Hakkai looked at Goku, “Good work picking all this.”
Goku blinked. A compliment? A real compliment? He looked over at Hakkai, “You’re welcome.” He was grinning from ear to ear.
Sanzo finished his fifth or sixth piece of fruit and reached into his bedroll for the sutra. Scripture in hand, he looked at his group, “After that outpouring of frivolity, I need some alone time.” Sanzo was a master at sarcasm, but Hakkai was better. Hakkai noted the soft undertones of the statement as Sanzo stood up and walked to the tree line.
He walked and found a comfortable spot next to a tree. He sat down cross legged and looked around. He made sure no one could see him. He held the scripture in his hand and began to chant.
Hakkai looked at Gojyo.
Gojyo looked at Hakkai. “We haven’t seen any demons for a while, I’m sure it is ok. I’m sure he didn’t go far.”
Hakkai relaxed his worried look, “I suppose. It’s so easy to forget he really is a priest and has priest things to do. “
“It’s not unusual for him to want alone time”, Gojyo glanced at Hakkai trying to read his expression, “However, I’m sure he’s not doing priest things. He’s probably….” He cut himself off remembering that Goku was present. He made a hand movement that Goku didn’t fully understand.
“Well, I’m going to check out the view.” Hakkai stood up and started walking around the small lake to the overlook.
Gojyo looked at Goku, “Well, monkey, what now?”
Goku shrugged his shoulders and bit into a piece of fruit. “Fruit?” he asked with his mouth full and offered a piece to Gojyo.
“No, thank you, I’m done. You just enjoy it all you want.” Gojyo stood up and looked off into the tree line -- not in the direction Sanzo went. “I’m going for a walk.”
Goku looked around him, he was surrounded by mounds of apples, pears, plums and a few other tasty-but-new-to-him fruit. He smiled and ate.
As Gojyo stepped into the tree line, his mind wandered to Scarlet. He thought about her face, hair and eyes. He thought about her name. He thought about her confidence. He envisioned her in battle, her sleek movements. The way she expertly handled her swords. He remembered their brief kiss. He saw a tree that looked comfortable and sat down, leaning his back against it. He closed his eyes and he could feel her lips on him. He knew they could never be together in reality. However, his forbidden fruit was available in his fantasies.
He dug into his pocket and pulled out the red crystal. He looked at the small oval and felt the slick surface under his finger tips. The color reminded him of her. She was so proud of her birth. He smiled. “I miss you, Scarlet, “he whispered.
Scarlet’s head whipped around and she looked at the large, oval, red crystal on her desk. “About damn time he took that thing out of his pocket. Those muffled sounds were irritating.” She realized Mikia was correct in suggesting a necklace, but she didn’t think Gojyo would wear it.
She sat down at her desk and moved the light linen fabric off the crystal. Gojyo’s face appeared and his voice came through as clear as if he was standing in front of her. “It works! “ she squealed, and sat back to watch.
As Gojyo fingered the crystal, their time together flooded his mind. Her laughter, her determination, her scent, her smile. The twinkle in her eye when she smiled. Unconsciously, his free hand made it’s way to his hardening cock. He began rubbing himself through his clothing.
Scarlet saw his eyes close and his head rest against the tree. She saw his lips part and heard a low moan came from him. Her eyes widened and she put a hand to her mouth.
Gojyo’s breathing increased as he rubbed his hand on his pants harder. He opened his eyes and looked around. “If I’m going to do this, I’m going to do it right.” He sat the crystal on his chest and opened his pants. His very hard member bounced as it was released from its cloth prison. He reached a hand up and slipped off his satin head band. He unfolded it and draped over his hard-on. He picked the crystal off his chest and caressed it in his free hand.
Scarlet had a prime view of Gojyo’s chiseled chest, large satin covered “tent“, and his red-framed face. Scarlet softly gasped, “Oh my god.” Her mouth hung open and she shifted in her seat.
Gojyo grasped his member firmly in his left hand and began to rub himself. The cool satin contrasted with his body heat. He closed his eyes and rested his head back against the tree. Remembering his previous sexual encounters, putting Scarlet in the role of the other women, he held him self firmer. “So tight,” he breathlessly moaned. He brought the crystal up to his face and rubbed it against his skin.
“No!” Her view had been obscured, Scarlet yelled at the crystal, “Damn it!”. She quickly checked the stones around the crystal and made sure he couldn’t hear her. “Then again….” She said and smiled wickedly. She adjusted the stones, “Oh, Gojyo” she breathlessly whispered.
Gojyo had a vivid imagination, but he would have sworn he’d just heard her. He stopped his stroking and pulled the crystal away from his face. He looked around. The sun was setting, but he could still see . Assured he was alone, he relaxed against the tree and returned to his fantasy.
He held the crystal at his chest and he looked down at it, “I want you, Scarlet.” He was so wrapped up in his fantasy that his thoughts were softly escaping his lips.
Scarlet looked at his face, his half-closed lustful eyes looking at her, “I want you, Gojyo.” Damn, he’s sexy.
He ran his hand over his member, rubbing the head through the soft satin. He saw Scarlet on him, kissing him, touching him, rubbing him. His strokes became faster and firmer. His hips began to rock, “Scarlet.”
“Gojyo.” Scarlet was leaning into the crystal, she wanted to desperately to touch him.
She put her hand on the crystal.
Gojyo felt his orgasm building. He shifted his position and removed the satin. He sat up on his knees, he dropped the crystal and it fell face up on the ground. He looked at it focusing on the red that now reminded him of her. He recalled the feelings he had with the twins, and replaced them with Scarlet. He pumped his hand furiously, his hips bucked.
Scarlet saw the crystal fall and when it stopped moving she was looking up at Gojyo. She saw his muscular thighs. He saw his large member being pumped by his hand. She saw the ripples in his stomach muscles and the flexing in his chest as he moved. She saw the sultry look in his eyes. He was looking directly into the crystal. She felt as if that erotic red gaze was right on her. She crossed her legs tighter and shifted in her seat. Her breathing had sped up.
She saw him pumping furiously, his lips parted and she saw his stomach muscles quiver. He loudly moaned. As he fell forward she saw a white steam arch over the crystal.
“Ok, that I didn’t need to see.” She put a hand over her eyes, parted her fingers and peeked at the crystal.
He bent forward, one hand flung out to keep himself from crashing to the ground. She saw his chest heaving and his hand slowly move from around his cock. She saw his member twitch as it expelled all it had to offer.
She saw something over his shoulder. She leaned into the crystal and adjusted the stones around it. “A zeitgeist?” she half exclaimed, half asked. It appeared as a shadow over his shoulder, she wasn’t sure. “Shit!” She fiddled with the stones, “Gojyo, where are you?” She moved the stones, “Ahhh! Hang on, we’re coming!”
Goku looked at the fruit left to eat and the fruit he was eating. His stomach bulged from under his shirt. He looked over at Hakkai, standing with his arms out looking over the cliff. He saw Hakkai’s sleeves flapping under his arms in the breeze. Goku felt the cool air on his face. Goku shifted and nestled himself in amongst the fruit. He closed his eyes and slowly drifted off to sleep.
Hakkai made it to the overlook. Hakuryuu was flying above him, enjoying the air currents. Hakkai looked over his shoulder and saw Gojyo and Goku talking. He looked across the landscape, feeling the wind push him. He saw Hakuryuu wheeling and flipping in the air currents. So free, he thought. You’re a dragon and you’re a jeep. So simple, no hard decisions, no losses, if you’re fed and have some place soft to land you’re happy. He felt the wind pick up and it pushed on his face. He looked over his shoulder and saw Goku sitting alone. He closed his eyes. He felt the wind pulling at his clothing. His sash billowing. He stretched his arms out and felt the loose part of his sleeves flapping in the wind. He stood like that until he could no longer feel his feet. So free, the wind. It can go anywhere it wants at anytime. No burden of memory, no anxiety of the future. Just here and now.
Hakkai wanted to feel more of that freedom on his skin. He opened his eyes and noticed the stunning sunset. He untied his sash, held it up and let it go in the wind. He saw it tumbling toward the lake. He pulled at his waist band and took off his shirt. He tossed it to the ground. He saw the golden, violet and scarlet hues of the sky reflect in the water of the lake. He saw the stark contrast with the dark green foliage. It looked like a picture perfect scene, so serene, so peaceful, so free. He put his heels on the edge of the cliff. He spread his arms out and leaned back into the wind. So very freeeeeeeeee……..
Hakuryuu screamed and dove for him.
Sanzo sat with his eyes closed, head bowed, and words came effortlessly from his mouth. I can’t believe I remember this shit. How long has it been since I’ve done this? Why am I doing this, now? Sanzo heard a distant giggle, his mind’s eye opened to a soft green field. He heard the giggle again and turned his head. He saw Kouryuu running and laughing chasing after butterflies. He saw his Master sitting on wooden steps smoking a cigarette.
His Master turned to him and looked puzzled. “Why are you here?”
“I needed to check on things.”
“Things are fine here.”
“I needed to know that he is alright.” Genjyo Sanzo turned and looked at Kouryuu.
Koumyou Sanzo looked at Kouryuu, “He’s fine. Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of him. Although he does get moody. That is only part of the reason you are here. What’s the full reason, Genjyo Sanzo?”
Genjyo Sanzo looked into the warm but worried eyes of Koumyou Sanzo and felt his shoulders drop. He couldn’t keep anything from him. He sat down and looked at him. “I’m tired. I’m physically tired. I want to rest. I want to be with you. I can’t take anymore of this journey.” He sighed. ”And, I’m a crappy priest.”
Koumyou Sanzo snuffed out his cigarette and looked at Genjyo Sanzo. “Your journey is very important, Genjyo. You must find the inner strength to persevere.”
“I cannot. I have searched and searched and I cannot.”
Koumyou Sanzo locked eyes with Genjyo Sanzo --- brown met violet. “This is not the Kouryuu I know. The Kouryuu I know did not give up.” Koumyou looked deep into the violet eyes. He saw a flicker of darkness. “You are in danger. Something is acting upon you.”
“What does it matter, maybe it is my time? It is so peaceful here, can I not stay?”
“No, you cannot stay. This is not your time. You are in danger, Genjyo Sanzo. You must go back. Sha Gojyo is in trouble. Cho Hakkai is in trouble. Son Goku is in trouble.”
“Goku?” Genjyo Sanzo’s head snapped up, “Hakkai? Gojyo? In trouble?”
“You must hurry to them.”
Genjyo Sanzo stood up and began to run in the direction from which he came.
Koumyou yelled out after him, “Hurry! And, you are a fine priest! You are, after all, saving the world!”
Genjyo looked at Kouryuu, the laughter had stopped. The child stood by a large tree looking and Genjyo. “Hurry,” the small boy whispered.
Genjyo Sanzo heard the beat of galloping horses in the background. He was trying to pull himself back into his body. Suddenly, he felt the need to sneeze. The force of the sneeze pulled him into his body. His eyes opened and he saw a white demonized horse in front of him.
He jumped to his feet and looked at the large white mare. The white horse had a diamond-shaped blaze of iridescent black hair between its eyes. The eyes appeared as pearls with white iridescence gleaming at him. The horse wore a Damascus and leather harness-of-sorts and an ornately carved leather saddle accented in silver. There was a heavy feedbag lashed to the saddle. The horse huffed at him. He looked at the rider and saw Jorja looking down at him. He heard Hakuryuu cry out and jerked his head. Jorja reached a hand down to him. ”Hurry!”
Scarlet galloped through the trees looking for Gojyo. She saw a sliver of red through some bushes and slowed her steed to a trot. She totted over to him and saw him laying face down in the dirt. His pants were still around his thighs. She got off her steed and bent down. She picked up his limp, but still warm body and adjusted his clothing. “Be thankful I alone found you.” She manhandled him into a sitting position and put the small crystal in his pocket. She held his face in her hands. Now what? She wondered. She put a hand on his forehead, nearly conjuring some chi ---”Shit! That would just make it worse.” She looked at her horse and rummaged for her water flask. She unscrewed the top and poured it over his head. Chanting and calling his name, as she focused her intent on him.
Something was pulling Gojyo from Scarlet’s arms. He was lifted off her and he struggled against the force. He stretched his arms out and grasped her hand. She remained still. As his hand slid past her finger tips, her arm limply fell to her side. She slowly closed her eyes. “Scarlet!” he yelled out, trying to get to back her.
His eyes flew open and he gasped. He saw Scarlet’s face in front of him. He felt something cool and refreshing run down his face. She heard him gasp and she stopped the water. She stood and helped him up.
“Scarlet? What are you doing here?” He touched her cheek to make sure he was no longer fantasizing.
“You’re in trouble, Gojyo.”
They heard Hakuryuu scream and she leaped on to her horse. She stretched an arm down and Gojyo grasped it. He sat on the horse behind her. He wrapped his arms tightly around her waist and the horse galloped in the direction of the screech.
Mikia stood near the campsite, her feet slightly more than shoulder width apart. Her arms up at a slight angle over her head, upturned palms faced more up than in. Her head was tilted up and her eyes were closed. Her body hummed and glowed with her chi.
The drawing position, the Goddess pose, Kyla thought as she ran to Goku. Now that she was here she wasn’t sure why she had asked to come. She looked down at his limp body and had no clue what to do. She knelt down to get closer to him. She cradled his head in her hands and kissed him. She held his head firmly and pushed her lips into his. She felt her mind spin and her knees go weak. She backed away from him and opened her eyes. Nothing…no movement….no flicker of movement… no reaction at all. She heard Hakuryuu scream and looked over at the peak. She saw Hakuryuu dive down and Tasha’s horse coming to a halt on the far side of the lake.
She heard hoof beats emerge from the tree line, two horses sprang out. On her left, Jorja and Sanzo and on her right, Scarlet and Gojyo, the four of them charged toward the peak. As Scarlet and Gojyo passed her, Gojyo looked over at Goku, “Free meat buns, buddy!”
Goku’s eyes popped open, “Where?”
Kyla looked down at him, she stood up and put her hands on her hips, “That figures.”
Goku looked up at her, “Kyla, what are you doing here?”
Kyla smirked at him as she helped him up, “Apparently nothing.”
Tasha jumped off the horse and hit the ground running. She halted at the edge, pebbles fell into the abyss.
Hakuryuu had his talons in one of Hakkai’s belt loops --- flapping wildly. Hakkai still fell, his arms out and eyes closed. Tasha sent a beam of chi down to him -- she managed to slow his descent. She looked over her shoulder as the horses emerged from the tree line. “I can’t do it alone!” she yelled.
The horses went through the lake at such speed that the riders did not get wet. They looked like streaks of white. They came to a sudden halt. If Gojyo and Sanzo hadn’t had such tight grips on the women, they would have flown over the heads of the horses. The women jumped from the horses; the men fell, more than slid, off. Sanzo sneezed as they ran to edge.
They looked over the cliff and saw Hakkai slowly falling to his death. Hakuryuu screamed as he struggled. Scarlet and Jorja sent beams of chi down to him and slowly he began to float up. Hakkai appeared oblivious to the commotion. His face looked like the definition of peace and tranquility. They guided him over the edge and gently placed him on the soft grass.
Tasha, exhausted, slumped to the ground. Scarlet went to her.
Hakuryuu jumped off Hakkai. Walking on the grass he flapped and squawked wildly. “I declare, you boys are worrisome. I freely offer to relentlessly labor to guide you and safeguard you. I excel in my duties as transportation and night watchman. Is this how you offer your appreciation and gratitude?” Hakuryuu stumbled, “Fret! I believe I have strained a talon!” Hakuryuu looked up at the group. ”You there! Are you going to continue to refrain from action?”
Gojyo looked down at Hakuryuu, “Boy, he’s really upset. I’ve never heard him squawk and screech like this.”
Hakuryuu waddled over to Gojyo and glared up at him. “I will implore that you cease and desist that immediately. I will have you know I am no he! I am a she!”
Gojyo looked at Hakuryuu, “Sorry fella, I don’t speak parrot.”
“Impossible moron! I could expectorate!” Hakuryuu released a small fireball. Gojyo jumped back. The horses seemed to laugh. She turned around and looked at Hakkai, “I come back for you and this is what I get!” Hakuryuu draped her neck over Hakkai’s shoulder.
Jorja knelt down next to Hakkai. She softly patted Hakuryuu, “Calm, little one. I will care for him.” She crossed her palms over his forehead and conjured some chi. Hakkai slowly fluttered his eyes open.
“Jorja?” He whispered, “What happened?”
She helped him up and Hakuryuu jumped on his shoulder nuzzling him. He looked at Hakuryuu as she cooed. He touched a hand to her long neck, “I must have really worried you, huh?”
Hakuryuu cooed, “Yes, quite.” There was something about that soft coo that Hakkai found comforting.
Sanzo sneezed and sniffled. Gojyo looked at him. His eyes were getting puffy and red.
Mikia yelled out, “I’ve found it!”
The women ran for their steeds, and helped the men up onto them. They galloped around the lake to Mikia.
They stopped and got off the horses.
Mikia dropped her pose. Her chi dimmed. “That tree, the nest is not a nest.”
The four men looked up at the tree. There was what appeared to be a squirrels nest resting in a fork in a lower branch. Gojyo conjured his weapon and twirled it in his left hand. The crescent blade detached and cleanly knocked the nest from the tree. The twigs broke and dispersed when it hit the ground. A small, black, glowing orb rolled from it.
Hakkai and Sanzo exchanged glances. As Sanzo slowly walked up to it, he felt the urge to go to his Master growing stronger and stronger. He quickly turned around and walked back to the group.
Goku went to walk up to it. Sanzo put a hand on his shoulder, “No, Goku. It is [sneeze, sniffle] forbidden magick.”
“How do we get rid of it?” Goku asked.
Sanzo looked west, there was no sun left in the sky. “Damn,” he muttered.
Hakkai conjured a chi sphere and threw it at the orb. The orb seemed to absorb it and it grew slightly. His brow knitted, “Hmmm.”
Gojyo looked at Goku, “Goku on three. One, two, three!” The two of them took off running. They leaped into the air and pointed their weapons at it as they came to the ground. The spade end of Gojyo’s weapon and a brass ball of Goku’s hit it at the same time. Their weapons bounced off it and they fell back.
“Great idea, grotto-for-brains,” Goku jabbed.
“I didn’t hear you come up with anything, stupid Monkey!” Gojyo helped Goku up and they walked back to the group.
“Ya know stupid and monkey are two different words, right?”
“Not when it comes to you,” Gojyo playfully smacked the back of Goku’s head.
Sanzo pulled his banishing gun and took aim. He squeezed the trigger and sneezed. He missed. “Damn!” He dropped his arm and stormed up to it. He stopped and knelt by it. He felt an overwhelming urge to leave his body and join his Master. He heard his Master’s voice in his head, “Strength to persevere”. He weakly raised his arm and placed the barrel of the gun next to the ball. Tendrils from the ball seemed to wrap around the gun. He heard his own words in his head, “A weapon small enough to point at my own temple.” He felt his hand begin to turn. He closed his eyes and pulled the trigger. Sanzo’s arm flew back. He sailed in the air and landed on his back in the grass.
“Sanzo!” Goku cried out as he ran to him.
The ball exploded into a million little shards, each one disintegrating into oblivion.
Dr. Ni saw the blip disappear on his screen.
“Ni! You’ll pay for this!” Lady Gyokumen Koushu yelled. He dropped his head.
Sanzo sat up and shook his head, “Hell of a recoil.” He leaned on Goku as he got up. They walked back to the group.
The group sat down around the campfire. Hakkai and Tasha began cooking.
Kyla walked over to the horses. She patted each one, speaking softly to each. The harnesses were more like headdresses than true harnesses. There were no reins and no bits. She attached the feedbags to the uniquely designed headdresses/ power limiters.
The wind shifted. Sanzo sneezed, sniffled, and wheezed. Everyone except Kyla, who was out of ear shot, looked at him. His eyes were puffy, watery and red.
Gojyo looked over at the horses and began to chuckle.
Hakkai inquired, “Sanzo, are you allergic to horses?”
Sanzo sniffled, “No, hay.”
Hakkai knitted his brow, “Hay? Since when?”
Sanzo looked at him, “Since always, remember when we ran into the imposters and we were put in the cell? The beds --if you can call them that--- were made of hay. You didn’t notice me sneeze? The hay was old, so my reaction wasn’t that bad.”
Kyla looked at the horses and spoke, “We have a nice mixture of barley, oats and sweet hay for you and, once you are done, I have a sugar cube for each of you. Thank you so much for your help today.” She bowed slightly to the horses and they began to eat.
Jorja looked at the night sky and poor, miserable Sanzo. “I suppose we shouldn’t stay too much longer.”
Sanzo glared at her. “How’s your leg?”
She looked at him. “Fine.”
He locked eyes with her. “So am I.”
“How did you get here so quickly?” Sanzo asked trying to change the subject.
Jorja sighed. “There’s a lot about our abilities that you don’t know.” She smiled, looked at their faces and realized her “mysterious ways“ theatrics were unappreciated. She laughed. “Well, that and we can travel underground ---- straight lines.”
Scarlet and Gojyo had wandered off during the conversation. She leaned against a tree, and he leaned into her, one palm against the tree by her head. He tilted his head slightly and looked into her eyes. The light from the campfire softly shaded their faces. Gojyo was finding himself getting lost in her stunning crimson hues. He leaned his head forward and remembered what she was. He pulled his head back and flipped his hair.
“So, how did you know we were in trouble?” he asked, trying to get his mind off what he wanted to do.
She smiled sheepishly. “I’m not so sure you want me to answer that.”
He looked at her and knitted his brow. “Now, I want to know even more.”
She softly chuckled and pressed her lips together. She sighed. “That crystal in your pocket is more that just a trinket to remember me by.” She bit her lower lip and tilted her eyes up.
His eyes narrowed. “What is it?”
She closed her eyes. “Well…” She squinted her face, “It’s a…ummm…” Oh, she did not want to tell him this.
“Out with it, Scarlet.” Gojyo’s mind was racing.
She sighed again and looked at him. “It’s a communication device.”
Gojyo’s mouth fell open as he pulled it out of his pocket. He stared at the crystal. “How does it communicate?” he stammered.
“Visual and audio. It also has a homing signal. So, we can find you if you need us.” She pressed her lips together and knitted her brow. She put on her best “I‘m-too-cute-to-be-mad-at” face.
Gojyo limply held the crystal and looked at the campsite. “So they saw and heard….” His voice trailed off as he tilted his head down.
Scarlet brushed her hand against his face. “No, just me.”
He looked at her and grinned mischievously. “Really? Does it work both ways?”
She grinned back at him. “It can.”
He tilted his head up and winked at her. “Then, you owe me one.”
She giggled.
Jorja looked over at Scarlet and Gojyo. She sighed. “They’ll be the death of each other.”
Sanzo stood up with a “Hmmph,” and grabbed a small cloth. He walked down the lake shore, seeing his reflection in the water. His head was surrounded by the twinkling of stars. He dipped the cloth into the cool water and wrung it out. He patted the cool cloth to his hot, puffy face.
Jorja stood up and walked toward him.
Tasha and Hakkai were engrossed in conversation.
Kyla was pointing out the various constellations to Goku.
A black streak swooped across the grass and snatched Jorja from her feet. Jorja felt pressure around her waist and over her mouth. Her back and head slammed against a tree with such force limbs fell.
Heads jerked and looked around in reaction to the sound. Everyone was accounted for except for one --- Jorja.
Jorja felt the pressure release from her mouth and move to her shoulders. “Damn it, that hurt!” she yelled as she opened her eyes. “Homura,” she gasped.
“Yes, sister, ‘tis I.”
They heard Jorja’s yell and everyone ran to the source.
“I grow weary of these games, sister.” His voice seemed to spit at her.
She narrowed her eyes, “Then quit. I don’t find them much fun, either.”
“The object of my desire has shifted.“
Jorja nodded slightly. “Yeah, I figured as much.”
“You now have something I want.” He glared at her. Jorja saw the group forming behind him. He released her and whipped around, “And, I’m willing to take a few hostages to get it!” Homura held his flame sword solidily in his hands.
Sanzo stood up front and in the middle of the resuce party. He had his weapon drawn --- his left arm long, sleek and steady. Goku stood slightly behind him to his left, his Nyoi-Bo ready in his right hand. Gojyo stood to the right of Sanzo, his shakujou staff in his left hand. Hakkai was to the left of Guko; he had a chi ball in each hand, tendrils jumping between them. The warrior women stood behind them, Scarlet and Mikia had their blades. Tasha held a glowing orb. Kyla looked like she was about to lose her bladder.
Homura reared his sword back. Sanzo narrowed his eyes. Jorja jumped and leaped into the air. Sanzo sneezed as he squeezed the trigger. His hand jerked.
Jorja landed where the bullet should have gone, facing Homura.
She stood between them, her arms straight out. “He won’t hurt me. I have something he wants!” Everyone noticed she stumbled slightly as she landed. She babied her right leg.
Sanzo opened his eyes and gasped.
“This won’t last forever, sister!” Homura yelled and, with a flip of his cape, was gone.
Jorja let out a breath as she dropped her arms and turned around, “Now, we should leave.”
Mikia ran up to her, “Your leg!” Sanzo looked at her leg. He saw the bullet hole in the white fabric.
“I’m fine.” Jorja looked at Sanzo. “This old injury still haunts me.” She walked back to the campsite, trying desperately to hide her limp. “Gather the horses, it is too dangerous for us to stay.”

Disclaimer: I do not claim rights to the Saiyuki characters. I did not create them. I did not have permission from anyone to write this fanfic. I’m not making money off this so please don’t sue me. I did however create The Moon Order and Jorja. I did originate the family ties between her and Homura. For all I know, Homura is an only child, so please forgive me if this diverts too far from the original story line. I also played with why Hakuryuu hangs with Hakkai ---this is NOT a spoiler as far as I know. I just really like the twist. I hope I stuck to the spirit of Saiyuki and made the characters grow just a bit, while staying with their original intent. I know Sanzo is heading a little out of character, because in my mind he is healing a little. I fully intended for there to be more sex in this one, sigh, it just didn’t happen. I do hope you enjoyed reading it. I wrote it before the 10th ADV dvd release and after reading the second TokyoPop manga. For those of you that wonder, I am female and Hakkai is my favorite character….which explains why I put him through so much.
Endnotes:
Now, as far as the character’s handedness, I went back and reviewed the first nine dvd’s paying attention to which hand the characters use most often. (Oh god! This is so sad!) I noticed that the characters are ambidextrous, usually favoring the upstage hand which would open the visual to the fourth wall. After making note of that, I watched them again, trying look beyond the visual necessities. Sanzo overwhelmingly uses his left hand, although he will use his right. Hakkai tends to use his left hand for his more powerful moves, and his right seems to be a supporting role. Although there are a few times where that flips. Gojyo seems to be right hand dominant, but his most complex moves tend to lean on his left hand. However, with his weapon I can’t be that sure. Gojyo seems to be the most ambidextrous of the bunch. I went back through, paying attention to his cigarette. It tends to show up on the left side of his mouth, which implies he predominantly uses his left hand. Goku favors his right hand over his left. They all do mundane things with their right. When they are eating they seem to be totally right-handed. (Wow, this seems so very sad as I write it. I am pitiful.) After the start of the second season a lot of this flipped ---- maybe they changed from a left-handed to a right-handed animator or story-board artist???
With that said, I don’t think the artist really put much thought into their character handedness. Why should they? The fourth wall and visual effects dominate it.
With all that said, I don’t have to worry about the visual. So I’ve applied my thinking to my writing. Sanzo, Hakkai and Gojyo are left-handed and Goku is right handed. I could be wrong. This should mean something ---if you noticed it ---when Gojyo was interacting with Dokugakuji.
Kouryuu ’s name. I have finally learned to spell it, then I noticed in the credits on the dvd it has 3 u’s, in the manga it has 2 u’s. I went with 2 because it means one less keystroke. (I’m REALLY lazy)
Koumyou’s spelling came from the manga.
Dokugakuji’s spelling came from the dvd credits.
I’m going to stop promising my husband the computer back, I keep breaking that promise.
Saiyuki and Saiyuki stuff is owned by whomever owns it. The original creator is a very talented young lady, please support the anime industry. We want more!!!

End-End Notes: After beginning work on the fifth installment, I have come across some trivia. According to Minekura, Hakkai is right handed, Gojyo is left handed, Sanzo and Goku are ambidextrous. Since I found this out after so long into the story, I will continue my now incorrect thinking. Sorry about the loss of integrity.
Editor’s Note (cupnjava‘s hubby): She really is pitiful. I TRY and TRY to give her a REAL life (I really do) but she ignores me. I think she’d rather have married Cho Hakkai, the way she carries on about throwing him in a blender and licking him up…also known as beastfucking him…
‘Course, I can’t say too much. I want Miss Arie from “Those Who Hunt Elves” to suck me ‘til nothing comes out but bone marrow.
We need lives. If you have one for sale, call me. Please. Now. I’m begging. I REALLY need a life and so does cupnjava. Please.
I have just been told to shut up and get in the blender…
