In the shadows
Pressed against my skin
There are memories
Pieces of the past
That long to sink in
Deeper to my heart
Through to my soul
Along the dark paths
They stalk and they wait
The little deaths I never noticed
Until it was far to late
It was six a.m. in the middle of the week and Kozue stood shoulder to shoulder amid the group of horror struck construction workers. Ocean blue eyes unfazed by the bloody tangle of limbs at her feet. In the distance she could hear a voice calling for order, and "to back away from the scene".
The sun was just barely beginning to break across the sky in a multitude of colors but all Kozue could see was red and black. The owner of the voice touched her shoulder and she looked up a pale chill in her expression that made the emerald-eyed young man step quickly away from her.
Her hearing was muffled and she felt as if she were underwater being taken by wave after wave of tumbling emotions that she did not know how to express. She wanted to kill. She wanted to punish. She wanted to rage against the forces that seemed to be working against her, pushing her further from her home in the forest, making her seek freedom in something far too thick to see through.
The body had been thrown off the tenth story, bones shattering upon impact, blood pooling into the dusty ground, coloring the gray of the construction site. And it was not the first body to be found. Four others had met with similar fates since construction on the building had begun. It was becoming difficult to keep the construction crew at work, and increasingly annoying since there were never any signs of a perpetrator.
The commotion continued around her, a slow motion play to her foggy vision, and from the corner of her eye standing well within the shadows she glimpsed the figure of a man. It took her a few seconds before she realized that she was even running, sprinting at full speed towards the spot. Breath ragged and heavy as she stopped encountering nothing, nothing but the dark air and shadow.
Was it a dream? It could have been. She wasn’t sure. So slowly it had begun to happen, the nightmares she had been experiencing drifting into reality and now the line was becoming blurred. She knew whom it was she thought she saw a tall man with shoulder length hair a dirty strawberry blonde (red in her eyes... everything was either a shade of red or black…no grays just darkness). Why was he so familiar? She wanted to say she had confessed her soul to him at some point. That she had been changed by his presence, all her true feelings rising to the surface.
Her shoulder’s rolled forward and a few men from the site were around her, asking her questions. What had she seen? Who was it? And other such inquires she could not answer, did not dare attempt to try.
Kozue grit her teeth and looked up at the skeletal building (more like a hollow shell after two months of work). The unfinished monstrosity that mocked her progress at every turn and it was true that the building was near completion. Only a few more months of labor and it would be done, finished. Her ears perked at noises rolling from what she assumed to be the clean up crew. Did they say...
"Kozue we’ve caught a saboteur", the construction foreman said quickly, his husky voice tickling the back of her spine.
And she moved, eager, quickly, a shark to the scent of blood. Was it that everyone was afraid of her? Is that why all those big and burly men were backing away from her? Or was it the grin? The strange manic smile thinly spreading over her lips as she inched forward.
Ocean blue eyes seared into the very core of the man being held down by one of the workers. She ignored the shout from (was it Saonji... it could be no other) Saonji hunching over the man whispering so softly even the worker holding the saboteur down could not make out all of it.
"Take him down into the basement", Kozue hissed.
Her command was followed and quickly.
Down, down the twenty steps into the basement, the still wretched place luminous with a pale but bright fluorescent lamp. Pipes still dusty, still oozing a green liquid that could not be determined. The man was quickly bound with rope that was conveniently lying around, fastened tightly beneath one of the pipes, and he screeched like a child as the green goo dripped and ran down onto his skin.
Kozue said nothing, allowing Saonji to act as interrogator. Watching as the big construction workers manipulated their fists into the captive's flesh. A black eye, a bloody bruise, cracked lips, the snap of a shoulder dislocating. All occurring within a heartbeat followed by a barrage of questions and then further beatings.
After too long waiting and watching the useless event Kozue held up her hand and waved the men off. She stepped forward and it must have seemed to the prisoner that mercy was forth coming, but the light of hope died slowly away as Kozue again grinned, manic, crazed and deadly. She took his face in both her hands, thumbs massaging his cheekbones.
"I'm a wicked girl sir", she whispered. "I'm never kind to anyone, even my lovers; anyone in this room can tell you I'm quite the heartless bitch."
She paused as her thumbs moved towards the eyes exacting pressure beginning to dig into the soft flesh. He screamed as she pushed harder blinding him, blood collecting around her hands. From behind her she could hear a construction worker vomiting and she chuckled. She put her lips to the man’s ears breathing softly as he continued to cry out.
"No patience have I for such things, tell me in plain words who has hired you to kill my workers and sabotage this building and I will refrain from smashing your skull to pieces."
She waited a moment to listen to the low gurgling sound that managed to escape the man’s throat, "Piss off."
A wicked laugh rose from her throat as she skipped back and held out her hand. Fingers closing around a thick metal pipe she winked at an appalled Saonji before stepping forwarain ain and drawing the pipe down across the bound man’s neck and shoulders.
"B-b-bl-b-bl" the man began to say incoherently amid lucid cries.
An eyebrow raised and she ceased her ministrations. Listening closely to the involuntary confession, the man so far beyond mental reproach from the torture.
"Black...R-r-r-r-roooooosssessss", the man breathed. "Black roses....ne-ver....d-d-d....die... black roses...never...n-n-n-n..."
His head drooped and Kozue finished him with a blow to the temple. She dropped the pipe and staggered over to Saonji wiping her hands on his white clean-up jumpsuit, and nipping at his nose.
"He's all yours" she chuckled then she eyed one of the construction workers, "If you ever find another like him on this site... bring him down here for me to handle."
The blood stains red on hands so pale
Pretty pictures and fairytales
The monster will get you
Will stalk from under the bed
The boogey will slaughter
Take your childish head
And you can hide 'neath that silken red hood
But oh my lovely little girl
Oh my love, my precious pie
The wolf can smell what you disguise
That slick and wet between the thighs
That honey something sugar sweet
The desire to lose a cheery treat
The monsters can taste it
Even before you give it
And trust me baby
Animals' jaws leave scars in the damnedest of places
The blinds were drawn inside the small trailer serving as Kozue's office. She sat at her desk feet propped up on the table, ears still ringing from what the saboteur had said; "Black roses never die."
She shut her eyes to bring herself further into the dark, black and red still the only colors that she could see. Hands at her temples as she came down off the sadistic high of doing as she pleased. But that was not her (not really), yet on some level, part of her soul screamed "Yes. Yes it is. That was the real you. The real you is cold and enjoys...revels in breaking life in two. So drink the blood proudly it's what feeds your existence and nourishes your being. That as it is, you are made of the dark."
Teeth grit she attempted to focus on the confession again, even if it was painful and made her remember things she knew she had never learned. History, she needed to pay attention to the history, the past of the building, and the things terrible (they had to be… why else was the entire site so thick with death) that had occurred there.
Two months of construction, countless life threatening accidents, and four, now five deaths, six if she wanted to count the saboteur but she didn't. Mrs. Ohtori would not be pleased with the slow progress she was making. Her eyes opened as she considered that Saonji would most likely report her behavior and what would her employer think? Did it even matter?
The trailer door creaked open and she knew whom it was, but it did not make a difference. It could have been anyone; she half expected it to be someone ready to put a bullet in her head. She was not safe, and the Ohtori's were always quick to dispose of their uncontrollable employees.
Slowly she rolled her head up to see the look (was it terror, shock, concern, why couldn't she read the expression) on the auburn haired architect's face. She blinked in blind fascination, she could see other colors again. Kozue shook her head when she realized she was staring (for how long) hazel eyes burrowing back, touching, caressing, and asking but not prying.
Kozue stood up.
"K-Kozue", Juri's voice was so tangible, so solid and real the wild girl wanted to cry. "Kozue what are-"
But her actions were still out of her hands, because she was kissing the architect. Cold and clean hands (she'd rinsed her them of the blood) tangling into thick auburn curls, tongue tasting, playing, exploring what she claimed as salvation, and she almost forgot to stop and breathe. Juri pushed against her advances, waking her up, making her sentient.
Kozue closed her eyes briefly as she pulled away, aware that despite pushing her back, Juri was still clinging to her. A rebellious arm resting around her waist. Eyes opened to greet further questioning glances as Juri relented and pulled her closer, hugging her tightly and whispering reassurances.
"You haven't been sleeping", Juri stated. "If you would rest I doubt you'd be so manic."
"I know… I haven't, I've been dreaming instead", Kozue replied. "Tell me about this building Juri. Who built it originally?"
"Why-"
"Don't ask the whys…just do it. Tell me…tell me about the black roses."
They are kind they are cruel
They are the real you
The things you bury and will not say
The secret passions hidden away
A scent so sweet, and decayed
A vision of night that falters and sways
Under the brush of such gentle touch
Masks undone and lost in the rush
Of sex and murder
Dare you ask further
They are made of blood and flesh
They are shadow transparent death
Flowers and insects, parasites too
Let them eat away the hollowed shell that has become you
They sat in a corner booth neither ate.
Juri spoke.
Kozue listened, and intently.
The story, the history was the stuff of myth. Under normal circumstances the self assured and defiant young woman that Kozue had become would have laughed at the absurdity. She would have called it bullshit and gone on with her life. But things were not normal. Things were quite the reverses. Things were in fact bizarre and completely fucked, as she had liked to say.
But she listened. The information became more pliable as she sat.
Once there was a man and he was a genius with numbers. He designed buildings that were ground breaking in appearance and scale, grandeur the likes of which none had ever seen. His buildings were art and his name was Mikage Nemuro.
The young man's talent caught the attention of a rising criminal family. The Ohtori's commissioned him for two buildings; two flowers of an opposing force like phoenix eggs (for as an organization the Ohtori‘s sought eternity, immortality of a sort). And the genius toiled for years to create two buildings that once stripped away to the basics would appear as a pair of blooming roses. It was a master achievement, the discovery of a new geometric formula.
Juri looked very intently into Kozue's eyes; "The rest is pure superstition. Alleged accidents kept occurring on the Black Rose building…which I guess if you look close enough at the Grey stone you can see where it once was completely back. You work at the White Rose building even if it isn‘t called that any longer. The names for the buildings hardly seemed to matter once the Black Rose fell into such disrepair."
"What happened to the designer?" Kozue was resting her head on the table.
"He was killed when the building caught fire the first time. It was always rumored that he was the one who caused it. He wanted to destroy his work."
"Why?"
Juri sighed heavily as she relayed, "The story says it was because he thought his buildings, the Black Rose in particular, would give birth to a great Phoenix…A light that would destroy the universe. Complete nonsense if you ask me. Just an urban legend to be heard and disregarded for the fairytale it is."
"But fairytales are Old World warnings Juri, they're lessons."
"And since when do you care about lessons?"
Her eyes shut and she sat up brushing a hand through her topaz hair. She sniffed and then shrugged, "Since I've been losing sleep and dreaming…"
"Dreaming of things far too deep for you to continue to keep."
Both women looked at each other; a haze of shock crashing over them the second the words were uttered. Juri shook her head immediately dismissing it as nothing, just a strange moment of recognition, but of what she could not say. Kozue on the other hand had heard the words before, a few months back in dream in which she spoke to Fenris again. The moment passed, Juri left the booth and walked to the door.
What do you find there?
Under her skin that wet spot growing thin
What do you need there?
Inside her hallowed ground devouring her sin
Is it that you need the bitter taste on your tongue?
Is it that you seek answers to your own nature buried between her thighs?
Well then alright
Take it deeper
Push it harder
Make it sticky, sweat it down and out
Blind your sight with the light of her disgust
Wrap your hands 'round such a slim throat
And…fuck…and…fuck…and… fuck…fuck it all up
It was so easy. Shiori could hardly think why she'd never done it before. All it took was a lingering glance; a well placed lie that seeped beneath the skin so sweetly it could not be ignored. She never knew how simple it was to just succumb to her nature. To take and kill so lightly. To kiss and breathe in the scent of want and lust without crying and backing away.
She remembered…briefly, as her lips trailed ever so gently, sweetly down (what was her name this girl with the doe brown eyes) a slender throat. She remembered how before if she had tried to do something like seduce another woman she would have retreated. She would have run and surrendered herself to some petty and rough boy. Would have been disgusted with her self only to immediately find the salvation she craved in the brutal truths offered by Kozue's kiss.
Now though, Shiori felt so powerful. When did it happen? She wanted to pinpoint the moment. She wanted to mark it eternally on her skin as the hour when she knew she had strength. When she realized she could take and taste, play so freely and without regret (and the girl she was pushing into the wall of the gas station restroom gasped and pulled her closer…had such a spark of desire and for her…just at that moment).
It was so…so easy to do.
She wondered, as her right hand began to unzip the girl's jeans (her left was roaming the wonders beneath the girl's white baby T-shirt, there was a pink star on it), if this girl (did she even ask the name) was making realizations of her own. Shiori hoped so. It would make the moment so special.
Two girl's (Shiori not really a girl any longer, decidedly older than the prey she was taking) over come by the simplicity of grabbing what they desired as they browsed a gas station store for snacks. Of knowing what they really wanted as they rushed into the single occupant restroom, locking the door and then ing.ing. Kissing and now…
Jeans unzipped; Shiori slid her hand under the light cotton, fingers tickling through the rich forest of brown curls to the slick and hallow in between quivering thighs. Her mouth muffling the gasps of her quarry, as well as her own. A delicious need building in her as hips rocked against her hand and she burrowed deeper. Hugged close and she bit the doe eyed girl's cheek as she (was the name ever important…no) shut her eyes to accept her loss.
Power…power and hunger were all Shiori felt. So she could take without regret. She could and it was wonderful. Would Kozue be proud? Did it matter? Of course not, because she had her own strength and the dreams had been so right… All she needed was what she accepted a new heart. And she would revel in the dark.
As the girl lulled against her, Shiori removed her hand slowly to offer a taste to waiting lips that took with such gratification as if it was all she had been waiting for. And after all the honeyed sweetness was sucked away, Shiori kissed the girl… hard.
Pug bag back, out of breath, but feeling so perfectly alive to say, "Not that it matters because we'll never see each other again, but did I ask you your name?"
The girl sighed in something of relief, as she tugged at her jeans and zipped them back up, "Wakaba, and no you didn't."
Shiori grinned, "I'm so happy I met you today." kis kissed her again before adding, "Too bad I'm running late or I'd have you return the favor."
Wakaba shrugged and then offered softly, almost hopeful, "We could… we could meet again."
"No…we can't."
Finally…
I can break and I can take
Destroy and shatter
Don't feel sad you weren't half bad
But I am all that matters
Deep inside you took the ride
And now we can be equal
Don't feel sad you weren't half bad
And now I know my privilege
I can take and I can break
I can taste you coming
And ain't it great it's not too late
For me to enjoy the slaughter
You can writhe and you can cry
But face it dear you like it
When I bite, when I fight
As I hit you harder
Choke your breath I've proven my best
'Cos I am… I am… rediscovered
Your useless and heartless lover
I am…and I have new words
New hearts
But don't feel sad you weren't half bad
And I'm ready for another
Round
"Do you think dreams can come true", the wolf asked.
"I don't dream so I don't know", Little Red Cap replied. Her voice so soft and delicate it could hardly be heard.
"Nervous", the wolf asked yellow eyes narrowing.
"Yes."
"You shouldn't be."
Little Red Cap stopped in her tracks looking all around her. Frightened for she thought herself lost.
"Oh but where has the path gone", she cried, pleading in her tone. "You led me astray you've betrayed me", she wailed at the wolf.
"But child you are not lost", the wolf comforted. "Look there between the trees, just beyond the brush, there is your granny's house. See, I have not betrayed you I took you through the short cut."
Little Red Cap sniffed and wiped her eyes dry, still afraid, still nervous, "But I'm not supposed to take the short cuts through the wood. What if something attacked me?"
"Something", the wolf questioned, "Like a wolf perhaps?"
"Oh no I didn't mean it like that", Little Red Cap defended. "You've been very kind."
Little Red Cap looked through the trees then and saw her granny's house, smoke spilling from the chimney. She smiled, happy that she had made it so far so quickly. Then she noticed that the wolf was leaving.
"But won't you stay with me the entire way wolf", Little Red Cap asked sweetly.
"I can not step outside the boundaries of these woods child. Is there not a hunter staying at your granny's? Does he not wish to make a grand prize of a creature such as I?"
"Why did you help me wolf", she asked curiously, growing nervous once more.
"Because the woods are dark and treacherous child and no place for a young girl…even one who prefers to stick to the path. Do not fear. You will be safe the rest of the way I will watch you go."
So Little Red Cap started walking towards her house, sadness in her heart because she wished to reward the wolf for helping, but there was nothing she had that she could give. When she was close to the edge of the woods she heard the wolf from far behind her.
"If you ever dream", the wolf called, "Come and find me and I will ask my question again."
Little Red Cap continued on her way to her granny's house and there she bid her granny hello. She did not speak of the wolf. And that night she dreamed and dreamed and dreamed till she thought she would never wake.
And it must be said… she never did.
Mistress Mary how does your garden grow
Not so very well see my roses failed
They are black and they'll have to go
Kozue sat at the end of the bed starting into the darkness. A dream about fairytales, she sighed… Freud would have a field day with her. Petite arms wrapped around her from behind and she reflexively pulled away and then back. Something was different about Shiori and she couldn't quite figure out what it was. The violet-eyed young woman had been less tentative and more aggressive in bed. Surer of the moves she made and while Kozue could keep up with the change it worried her.
"Why are you over here", Shiori asked playfully leaving tiny kisses all along the slender of Kozue's neck.
"Couldn't sleep."
Blue eyes shut and she turned to meet her playmate's lips. They tasted of peach flavored candy and rum. Eyes open as she pulled away to view the want that was growing, the girl looked hungry, starved for what she normally would not openly ask for.
"I can help you sleep", Shiori whispered, drawing closer almost sitting in Kozue's lap.
"I don't want to sleep."
"I can help you with that too."
Shiori pushed Kozue back and the reluctant wolf accepted it, curiosity getting the better of her. An interesting twist to the day having the petite young woman so frisky, so willing… too willing.
A sly grin spread across Shiori's face as she lay her self over the wild young woman she had constantly referred to as "a friend", never lover, never sexual partner, just friend. But she didn't want to be just a friend anymore it was clear in her eyes. She craved something deeper and on some levels something more sinister. Her lips gracing a slender neck once again, moving up to greet a pair more complacent. Moving a kiss from light to hard, something entrenched.
"Kozue", Shiori asked whispering into the young woman's ear, ready move on to more interesting things, but she needed to know.
"What?"
"Do you believe that dreams can come true?"
To be continued…
