Chapter 3

The next morning Mai got up early enough to make breakfast and lunches for Haru and Momiji. After they were off to school a new table was brought in and put in Akito�s room. Mai was slightly surprised to see Akito come downstairs and sit at the table. Mai set a plate of food down in front of him and silently watched him eat. She couldn�t help but notice how pale his skin was.
"You don�t have a fever again do you Akito?"
"I�m fine."
Mai just shrugged and walked back into the kitchen. When she finally came back into the room Akito was gone and there was an empty plate on the table. Mai picked up the plate and walked back into the kitchen. She would have to make sure that she told Hatori about how pale Akito looked. When she was done with the dishes she went to go find Hatori. She found him at his house, in his study. She stood there for a minute just watching him as he looked over some papers. She had always found him attractive, but since she had known him all of his life she had never thought much about it. But now that he was older she was seeing him differently. Mai knew that she was falling in love with him, but she didn�t think that he felt the same for especially since she knew that he still had feelings for Kana.
Walking up to the open door, "Hey Hatori I am worried about Akito."
Looking at her, "Is something wrong?"
"Well when he came down to breakfast he looked paler then normal."
"Did he have a temperature?"
"I didn�t check."
"OK I will go check on him."
She watched him leave the room and head for the main house.
"Hey Hatori."
He stopped and turned toward her, "Yes."
Smiling, "You should get your hair cut. You looked more handsome when your hair was shorter."
He just stared at her for a minute before continuing on to the main house. She knew that Akito would be mad at her for telling Hatori but she didn�t care. Mai walked up to Akito�s room, she wanted to know if he had a temperature or not. She could hear Hatori�s voice as she climbed the stairs.
"Well your fever is back. Your temperature is at 101.5. I want you to rest and take this."
"I�m not taking anything. I am fine."
"Akito please just take the medicine." Said Mai.
"No, why do you care anyway?"
"Because I love you and you are my son. I worry about you."
"Yeah right."
"Akito I am serious."
"Why should I? I am just going to die anyway."
"Because I want to keep you healthy and alive for as long as I can."
"I don�t want to live anymore. I hate this life."
He put his hands under the table and sent it flying. Mai couldn�t get out of the way fast enough and the table hit her on her right side, dislocating her right shoulder. Her head hit the wall hard as she was thrown against it. The last thing that she heard before she blacked out was Hatori yelling her name. Hatori ran over to Mai and pulled the table off of her. Then he picked her up and turned back toward Akito, "You better hope that her injuries are not serious."
He walked out of the room and carried her downstairs. He would have to take her to the hospital, just to be on the safe side. Hatori laid Mai down on the couch and called an ambulance. After the ambulance came to get Mai, Hatori headed for the school. He wanted to leave a note for Momiji and Haru, then he went to the hospital.
Akito watched from his window as the Ambulance took Mai to the hospital. He then turned and walked to the middle of the room, then sank to his knees. He couldn�t believe that he had hurt her. He never meant to hurt her just frighten her. Akito covered his face with his hands and began to cry.
At the school
It was lunchtime and Tohru, Yuki, Kyo, Haru, and Momiji were all sitting together eating lunch when a woman�s voice came over the loud speaker.
"Can Momiji, Haru, Yuki, and Kyo Sohma please come to the office. Please bring your things with you."
"I wonder what is wrong?" said Haru.
"I don�t know," getting up. "I guess we had better go find out." Said Yuki.
He grabbed his bag and turned toward Tohru, "I will see you in class."
She nodded as she watched the four of them walk toward the office.
"I wonder if it is something serious." Said Momiji.
"Maybe Akito is dead." Replied Kyo.
"That would be a good thing." Muttered Yuki.
They all walked into the office and up to the counter. The aid handed Haru a note, "Some one will be here in a few minutes to pick you up."
"What does the note say?" asked Momiji.
Reading the note, "Haru, Momiji, Yuki, and Kyo I am sending Shigure to pick you up. Akito injured Mai and I had to take her to the hospital. Hatori."
"Mai was injured." Said Momiji shocked.
"That is what the note says."
Just then Shigure walked into the office, "Good you are all here."
"Is Mai ok?" Asked Momiji.
"I don�t know, Hatori didn�t know anything yet when he called me." Looking at Kyo, "You are being awfully quiet Kyo."
"Yeah well there isn�t anything for me to say. I don�t know Mai."
"Well then maybe you should stay here. You can walk Tohru home and let her know what is going on."
"Fine, anything is better then being around that damn rat."
Kyo headed back toward his classroom, while the others followed Shigure out of the school. It was a good thing that the school was only a few blocks from the hospital, so it didn�t take them very long to get there. They walked into the hospital and found Hatori there waiting for them.
Running up to him, "Hari is Mai ok?" asked Momiji anxiously.
"Yes Mai will be fine. She had a minor concussion and a dislocated right shoulder. They are going to keep her for a few days and then she can come home."
"Can we see her?" asked Haru.
"Yes, follow me."
