It took Yuki two weeks before he found time to go visit Onwa, Kadan’s brother. . It turned out that Wutase Manor, the Wutase version of the Sohma main house, was a two-hour bullet train ride from the nearest station to Shigure’s house. The young rat had been kind enough to call first and make sure he wouldn’t be intruding.
The train ride had been boring. Yuki finished a book and a half on the way there, which would be a problem for when he came back seeing as how he only brought two books with him.
The cab let him out at the front gate. A young man was sitting out front smoking and reading the newspaper. His hair was a dusky white color, muck like Yuki’s. The teen couldn’t see the man’s eyes. The young rat took a deep breath and walked to the man.
“Excuse me.” He said softly.
“Just a moment, Yuki, “The man said not looking up from the paper., “I’m nearly done with this article. Have a seat.” Yuki primly sat next to the one he could only assume was Onwa. Minutes passed between them. For Yuki, it was a chance to take a closer look at his surroundings, for the man, it was a chance to finish reading Shigure’s latest book review and study the boy beside him.
“Okay then,” the man said, folding the paper back exactly how it had come, “My name is Onwa Wutase, It’s nice to meet you, Yuki Soma.” The man said standing then slightly bowing.
“How did you know it was me?” Yuki looked confused.
“We’re not expecting any other visitors today. Come lets go inside.” Onwa opened the gate.
“Uh, thank you.” Yuki walked inside a little shocked. It wasn’t like Soma house. People were outside, laughing, enjoying themselves. The children were playing some chasing game. A man was tossing a little girl up in the air and catching her with a pivot on his foot so she would get swung around. The girl, all the while, was laughing with such joy and happiness.
“Monkey?” A young woman called. The girl quieted down and hid behind the man’s leg, still giggling. “Monkey, where did you go?” the woman asked again, drawing nearer and nearer to the man who was now acting as a shield. The girl exploded in a fit of laughter and ran behind Onwa with a “hide me, hide me!” the woman looked at the older rat. She slowly walked to the right of him then quickly moved to the left. She grabbed the laughing girl saying, “I caught you!”
“Yari, I would like to introduce you too Yuki Soma.” Onwa said after clearing his throat.
“Oh? It’s nice to meet you. My name is Yari Wutase and this is Houseki.” She said holding the still giggling child like a sack of potatoes, “Houseki, introduce yourself.”
“Hello,” the girl said softly, “My Name is Houseki Wutase.” Yari bowed the both of them
“Are you the monkey?” Yuki asked. The little girl was really cute. ‘Too bad Tohru isn’t here’ he thought, ‘She’d adore the girl.’
“No, I’m,” she wiggled her finger to have the teen come closer, “I’m the head of the Wutase family.” She blushed.
“Why were they calling you ‘Monkey’?”
“Oh, because of this,” Yari sat the girl on the ground and lightly pulled on the child’s ears while Houseki puffed her checks out. “See? She looks like a monkey.”
“And you, Miss Yari, are you a member of the zodiac?” Yuki asked. Gods, he was sounding like Tohru.
“I’m the horse and Hongo over there, he’s the snake.”
“If you’ll excuse us Yari, Hongo, Miss Houseki,” Onwa bent at the waist to acknowledge the four year old, “we have a lot to discuss.”
“Okay but you promised to have tea with me after dinner. You haven’t forgotten right?” Houseki asked.
“Of course not, Monkey. I’ll see you this evening.”
“Sorry about the interruptions.” Onwa said after they had made it into his flat. He put the Kettle on for tea.
“Don’t worry about it,” Yuki looked almost sad, “Things are never this lively at Soma house. It’s almost dead when you walk the grounds.”
“Hatori has said as much. I have a feeling if has to do with Akito.” Onwa placed the tea pot and cups in front of Yuki.
“So your sister is the cat?”
“Yes. We get along wonderfully now. Although, it wasn’t always like that. When we were younger we would get into the worst fights. She would say things like ‘It’s your fault were still cursed.’ And ‘you’re just being selfish. One life verses thirteen’, stuff like that.”
“What did she mean?” Yuki looked at the man quizzically.
“You know the story of the Zodiac, right?”
“Of course I do.” Yuki looked at him like he was nuts.
“The whole story?” Onwa clarified.
“What? God invited all the animals to a party and the rat fooled the cat into not going?”
“Yeah, but after that, God was mad at the rat for being deceitful. He told the rat that in order for the cat the forgive him, he would have to make a huge sacrifice.”
“Really? I’d never been told that.” Yuki said completely taken back.
“Well, its oral history, after a while parts get removed and rearranged. It’s not really surprising that you’ve never heard that part, seeing as how long the curse has been in your family.”
“Are other families cursed?” Yuki asked earnest curiosity in his eyes.
“Of course. What you think we’re the only ones with all the fun? There are families who have it and families who have gotten rid of it. But the unfortunately all got rid of it that same way.”
“What was it?”
“The Rat had to kill himself or be killed for his family. From what I can tell, the cat killed him doesn’t work. It may sound simple enough, but the rat must be completely unselfish. Not so much as ‘everyone will praise me for what I did’. And there is not guarantee that it will work.”
“Why not?” Yuki felt the knot form in him stomach even though he drank the tea.
“The cat may not forgive the rat.”
_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-
‘The cat may not forgive the rat’ his words ran into Yuki’s mind all the way home. He didn’t even try to read his book. And he was visibly distracted at dinner. So much so, Tohru asked if he was feeling alright. He had just smiled and said for her not to worry. But, despite what he said, Yuki still went to bed early.
“Maybe he’ll actually wake up tomorrow.” Kyo muttered eating a piece of mochi.
“Oh, um. Maybe I should go and check on him.” Tohru got up.
“No, go on to work. He’ll still be here when you get back.” Kyo collected his dishes and walked into the kitchen.
“Okay, “Tohru looked less then enthusiastic, “I’ll be back by eleven.” She slipped on her shoes and left. Kyo looked at the door after the rice ball had left. He grumbled and went up stairs to Yuki’s room. Kyo knocked twice and then opened the door.
“So what’s going on? You where okay to go visit that guy today. Are you sick?” the cat leaned against the wall.
“No, I’m fine. Besides, why do you care?” the rat sat on his bed.
“It’s Tohru. She’s worried about you.”
“Is she still here?”
“No, she left for work.”
“Oh. I see.” And he did. It was more then apparent how much Kyo was in love with Tohru.
“It’s just… is there any way you could forgive me?”
“What the hell are you talking about? You know the answer to that one.”
“Right.” Yuki said. “You know. I think I am coming down with a cold.”
“Okay. Fine. I’ll go.” Kyo left the rat to think in silence. ‘It would be hopeless. Completely hopeless.’
