Kureno and Ishiku, Saki’s husband, stood in the train station waiting for Kyo. The cat stepped off the train and immediately spotted Kureno who was holding a little boy. The kid looked like his parents.
“Kyo, How are you?” Kureno asked.
“I’m fine, you?”
Kureno smiled and looked at the child in his arms, “I’m doing alright. Oh this is Ishiku Kohan.”
“Nice to meet you.” Kyo bowed slightly.
“Likewise.” The man replied. Kureno motioned toward his car. The small bevy made their way to the vehicle. Kyo sat in front, Ishiku sat in back with Shishi who had been introduced to the cat sensei somewhere in between stepping off the train and reaching the car. The ride to Tohru’s house was more or less silent.
“Arisa and I live over here,” Kureno pointed to a little house, “Saki and Ishiku live there, and this is Tohru’s.” Kureno nodded his head to the house in front of him. It was a small, quiet little house. Kyo grabbed his bags saying his thanks and made his way up the stairs. His hand was shaking a little when he reached out and knocked.
Nikkou answered after a moment. “Hey… how was your trip?” He asked in his dry tone.
“Long” Kyo replied.
“I’m not going to call you ‘dad’.” The boy spoke again.
“That’s fine.” Kyo answered. It was obvious the kid was having trouble with this situation.
“What should I call you?” Nikkou asked, “Not that I really care” he added.
“Kyo’s fine. Is there a place where I can put my bag?” Kyo asked holding up his suitcase to prove his point.
“Yeah, follow me.” The boy stepped back to let the cat in. He led him through the house to the back room where Tohru was sitting behind a desk, phone to her ear.
“Sango, I know you don’t like the Sakarabi house but you’re the only one who can cover it.” She was quiet for a moment longer before she sighed and said her thanks.
“I don’t know why you put up with her. She’s a pain in the ass.” The boy said
“Nikkou!” Tohru reprimanded. “She’s a good worker.” She wrote something in a day planner as she spoke.
“Kyo’s here.” Nikkou turned and went to his room.
Kyo stepped into the small office and looked around. It was probably about ten feet by twelve with a desk in one corner. A couch sat across from it with a TV and bookcase. Tohru smiled at him as she closed the planner.
“How are you?’ Tohru asked stepping around the desk.
“I’m…” ‘Nervous, overwhelmed, in shock, shaking’ “… Fine.” Kyo said at last.
“You’ll be in here. The couch folds out into a bed.” Tohru chewed on her lip. “Oh! Let me give you the tour.” She took his bag and, due to the fact that it weighed a million pounds, immediately dropped it.
“I should have warned you its heavy.” Kyo put the bag on the couch.
“How silly of me,” Tohru rubbed her sore arm. “Um… follow me.” She motioned and left the room. The office was at the end of the hall, flanked by both her room on the right and Nikkou’s on the left. The bathroom was next to the boy’s room and the toilet room was after that. The dining room and kitchen were on the right and the living room was in front with the entrance. As they past Nikkou’s room, Kyo noticed the boy looked over his book at the passing adults.
“It’s about time for dinner, what would you like?” Tohru asked.
“Fish?” Kyo suggested. He loved her cooking and for some reason the fish tasted fresher when she prepared it.
“Nikkou, how does fish sound for dinner?” the woman asked her son.
“Fine.” He called back. Kyo stood in the kitchen with Tohru helping her prepare dinner. It felt just like old times, working side by side talking about inane stuff. Tohru talked about her cleaning business and Kyo talked about teaching at the Dojo. Then Tohru moved on to the much touchier subject of Nikkou. She told Kyo about how he does in school and how his first word was ‘Yankee’. The fact that Nikkou’s first steps ended in a run right into a wall. Kyo looked over at Tohru as she spoke. The young woman’s eyes distant and she had a little smile on her face. It was obvious to Kyo that raising their son by herself didn’t bother her in the least. Nikkou poked his head into the door. They really did look good together, even if his mother was talking about embarrassing stuff.
“I’m going over to Aunt Arisa’s.” Nikkou said walking past the kitchen.
“Okay. Dinner will be ready in about ten minutes.” Tohru called over her shoulder.
Kyo listened to the door close before he turned towards Tohru, question in his eyes. “I need to ask you something.” He looked uneasy.
“Yes… what is it?” Tohru looked up at him.
“Why didn’t you tell me that you… about the… that you were… pregnant.” Kyo looked into her dark eyes.
Tohru’s gaze clouded with tears before she looked down. “I really don’t think it matters. But… I’m sorry… I’m sorry for not telling you about him.” She wiped her face and looked back up. Her eyes were still a little glassy. Kyo wanted to pull her close, to hold her. Whatever the reason, she was obviously still upset by it.
“Look… I… its okay... I mean… it will be okay.” Kyo looked uncomfortable. Why was he always reduced to a dithering idiot when he was trying to comfort her? Kyo liked to think he’d grown at least a little since high school. Tohru sniffled a little and turned back to the pot, stirring it.
“Dinner’s ready.” She said softly. She felt Kyo standing behind her before he placed his hands on her shoulders. Kyo laid his check on the top of her head.
“Everything will be fine.” He whispered quietly. Tohru sighed contentedly. This felt right. She hadn’t dated at all since she had her son, hadn’t wanted to. No one really fit, But he did.
“Mom?” Nikkou called from the front door, “smells good. Is the food ready yet?” Kyo jumped back and turned away, blushing. A complete… dithering… idiot.
“Yes, it’s ready.” Tohru grabbed three plates and asked Kyo to help bring in the food. The three of them sat down and Tohru set to work dishing everyone. Dinner conversation was topical; Kyo told Nikkou that he was a Karate teacher which earned him an “Oh? So what… do you resort to violence to solve all your problems?” from Nikkou, which in turn earned him a stern look form Tohru. Kyo sighed with happiness at the first bite. Her cooking had only gotten better.
After dinner, Tohru started gathering dishes and taking them into the kitchen to be washed. She grabbed another small stack and headed into the other room. Kyo sat for a moment longer and picked up his own plate to help her. Unfortunately, Tohru forget something on the table and turned back. She bumped into the cat and dropped all of dishes and made the cat go poof. Nikkou looked in amazement as the man who was standing before him was now an orange feline.
“Oh, no, Kyo, are you okay? You’re not hurt are you? Oh! I broke some of the dishes.” Tohru freaked out.
“Calm down.” Kyo said resting a paw on her knee.
“What the hell is going on?” Nikkou shouted.
“You didn’t tell him?” Kyo asked the distressed woman.
“I promised I wouldn’t share your secret with anyone. And it never really came up.” Tohru picked up the broken pieces of the plates.
“Look… my… our family is under a curse. Thirteen of us turn into the twelve animals of the zodiac, plus the cat.” Kyo explained as Tohru rushed shards into the trash.
“So wait, twelve other people do this too?” Nikkou tried to wrap his head around the new concept. The house was quiet for a long moment before Kyo felt the familiar surge of adrenaline and his muscles tingled. His body lengthened back to its normal form in the familiar poof of smoke. Tohru turned her back out of politeness and waited for him to redress.
“So I guess you think I’m really weird, don’t you?” Kyo asked.
“As far as strange stuff goes… I guess yours is pretty cool.” Nikkou shrugged. Tohru smiled at the two men standing in her dinning room. This was so great. She heard the soft scratch at the door and the muffled meow before she went to the front door and let her cat in. the small white feline wondered in and meowed at the woman before darting into the dinning room and hopping on Kyo.
“Sauri, Come here.” Tohru picked up the cat and held her, scratching under her chin. The cat purred and looked over at Kyo who was very studiously cleaning up his dish before depositing it in the trash.
“Well, kids, it’s been fun, but I’m going to watch TV.” Nikkou stood and went to the living room. Kyo and Tohru went into the back office. Tohru pulled her chair around while Kyo took the couch. They sat and talked about everyone Tohru had left behind. Haru was married to Rin; number one’s on the way. Yuki was still single but didn’t really mind. He would just say that the right woman hadn’t come by yet. Hiro and Kisa were engaged, the wedding was next spring. Momiji was dating a really nice girl. As he says, they’re semi serious. Hatori married their homeroom teacher. Apparently her name is Mayu. Ayame wasn’t dating or married but it’s pretty obvious that he’s with his assistant. Shigure is still single and apparently still torturing his editor. Akito died about five years previous and the new head of the family is really cute. He’s not even four yet. Tohru was happy that everyone was doing well, she really did miss them. Nikkou came into tell Tohru that he was going to bed and gave her a hug. He glared at Kyo, daring him to say anything about it. The young man just looked back face carefully blank while he tried not to laugh. He and Tohru stayed up for a few more hour talking before Tohru decided to head to bed. Tohru went into her room and closed the door leaning against it. After all this time, he still made her stomach do flip flops. She took a deep breath and changed for bed. Tohru slipped into the waiting sheets, pulling the covers up to her chin. Sleep took her quickly and she was soon dreaming about a certain orange haired Sensei.
Kyo thought for a moment longer before pulling out the couch bed which was already made. The cat smiled; of course Tohru would already have it made. He changed for bed which required pulling off his pants and clamored into the surprisingly soft and comfortable bed. His mind wondered the amazing woman in the next room before sleep finally sucked him in.
