Disclaimer: I do not own Trinity Blood, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
Darkephoenix: My dear, you said you couldn't wait, and I am not one to try your limits. Ask and ye shall receive ;)
winterfrau: Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter a little more. Oh, Alucard will have his fun with the orden, and Alex will have her fun with Isaak. You'll see why very soon. I guaruntee it will make you hate him and love him all the more.
sephora: I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with the term mary sue. I'm also sorry that you're set against a character pair I've already admitted to planning to use :/. He won't be "sucked" into a relationship any more than any of the characters from the previous story were, and they won't have the same type of relationship as Alex had with Hugue and Abel, but there will be tension there. There's going to be tension between Alucard and damn near every other character, simply because he's an arrogant guy and he's always oozing sex. He's going to become very interested in Alex quite soon, so sorry, but that's the plan! I promise that this story is going to be all about Abel and Alex, but I'm going to use Alucard to sort of drive them together.
Retro Lamb: lol it's ok, don't worry about it. I just wouldn't want you to spoil it for yourself. And don't keep too quiet, I love reviews and questions and whatnot and a shh from me is never a scolding ;) What's better than Alucard and Abel? Alucard, Abel, and Hugue.....mmmMmMmMMmmmm.... yummers.
DarkCrusnikMagician: I know you guys are curious already, and I'm aching to just dump it all so you know everything already, but what's the fun in updated stories if I don't keep you guys on yer toes? ;) We'll find out a little more about everything in each chapter. And I'm going to keep the sexual tension between Alex and Abel at a high boil for quite some time, so hang on to yer hats!
Chapter 3: Tremors From the Past
Their guests had been shown to their rooms and told they were welcome to wander the Vatican grounds until Abel’s return. Both Crusniks would conduct the training for the four members of Hellsing, but Abel would need some rest after his mission. Alex left Catherina’s office when Tres insisted that she eat dinner. Alex needed less and less true food as she aged, and so she left the android and his Mistress so that the Cardinal might eat in peace. She had perched herself atop a gazebo in the middle of the gardens, watching as the sun sank and the light of day grew dim. She felt his approach long before he passed into the garden, closing her eyes to better sense his mood. He seemed neutral enough as he approached her from behind, his steps silent on the lush grass. She smiled ever-so-slightly as she received a warm caressing wave of emotion from him, like stepping out into a warm summer day. He tried so hard, but his warmth and pleading presence wasn’t enough to shake her guilt. She stood and let her wings sprout from her back, flexing them in the failing light.
“Hello, Father Nightroad.” He sighed almost inaudibly at the formal appellation.
“Good evening, Madame de Watteau. Alexandra.” He whispered her name into the gentle breeze reverently, hoping to coax her down from the gazebo.
“If you are looking for Lady Catherina she is in the Grand Dining Hall with Tres.”
“I have already spoken with her. I was looking for you.”
“Oh?” Alex’s voice came out rather unaffected and she winced inwardly at her seeming apathy.
“Alexandra, please.” Alex turned and cast a sad smile in his direction, stepping off the roof, landing quietly a foot away from the silver-haired priest. She tucked her wings and Abel watched, mesmerized as her wings melted into her back.
“You still wear that ridiculous outfit.” Abel dropped his gaze to the ground, flushing slightly. Alex shuddered at her own coldness. “I didn’t mean it that way... I just think you would look better without that silly getup.” They both fell silent, neither knowing what to say to the other.
“Would you walk with me, Alexandra?” Alex shrugged and stood even with him, but did not take the elbow he offered. Sighing quietly, Abel dropped his arm, clasping his hands behind him and resting them at the small of his back as they walked.
“What did you want to talk about, Abel?” Alex looked off down the corridor, unable still, to make proper eye contact.
“How are the children?”
“You saw them the last time I did. Seth assures me they are just fine.” Alex was suddenly gripped with an overwhelming, cold, pang of loneliness and homesickness.
“Are the boys still writing to you?”
“Cendricus wrote last week, but I only receive letters from Ilarius about once a month.”
“I imagine they’re moving into their independent stage. I’m sure Ilarius thinks about you just as much as Cendricus.”
“I doubt that. I know they love me, but Ilarius has absorbed himself in the culture of the Methuselah empire and the goings on at court. Maybe I shouldn’t have let Seth keep them within the royal fold.”
“You worry too much.”
“That’s nothing knew.” They both smiled at different memories, both of which involved Alex panicking over something small pertaining to the children.
“You have become a wonderful mother, Alexandra.” Abel stopped them in a rather dark alcove, turning toward Alex, his eyes shining in the dim light.
“Thank you.” Alex dropped her gaze, flinching when Abel reached a long finger out to lift her chin.
“Alexandra.” Alex knew the look playing in his eyes and his tone of voice. She suddenly felt utterly cornered and panicky.
“Don’t.” Alex turned to gaze away, trying to hide her trembling.
“After all these years, Alexandra, can you still not look me in the eye?” Alex shuddered, slowly bringing her gaze around to meet Abel’s. The raw emotion she found in his eyes, his hurt, his loneliness, his sadness, made the tears well in her eyes, tinting the world red. He leaned in, closing the gap between them.
“Abel...”
“Please don’t ask me to leave you be. Please.” Abel closed his eyes, his forehead resting against hers. She trembled almost violently, torn between embracing him and shoving him away.
“I-I... can’t.” Alex slid away from him until her back met the stone wall behind her. Abel was instantly close to her, reaching out to take her face in his hands. Alexandra closed her eyes and willed her feelings away, refusing to take pleasure from his touch. She tried to find her anger, struggled to find the rage that had subsided with time. She shoved at him, but Abel knew it was half-hearted. Seeing her weakness and an opportunity, Abel leaned in and kissed her, tenderly but firmly, cupping her face in his warm hands. Alex made some small desperate noise behind her lips, refusing to repay his affections.
“Alex, don’t fight me. It’s been so long, a lifetime. Let me repay you, even if it takes eternity, we have it now. I could always bear the thought of eternity until you turned away.”
“Don’t you dare make this my fault!” Her voice was tremulous at best, completely unconvincing of the anger she felt at his words. He shook his head and kissed her again.
“No, Alexandra, that isn’t what I meant. I just can’t stand the thought of such a long life if you’re not with me.”
“Abel, please.” His eyes glittered with unshed tears as a lone blood tear slid down her face. Abel’s face took on a pained expression, leaning in to follow the tear’s trail with his tongue. Alex gasped, melting, shocked at the intimacy of the action. She pushed herself away from him and brought her fingertips to her cheek, feeling the wetness he’d left behind. Abel shook his head, withdrawing.
“Forgive me, I rushed you. Alexandra, please. It’s already been a lifetime, must we continue to live this way? Tell me now that you have no feelings for me whatsoever, and I will never bother you again.” Abel watched as she gazed back at him, several emotions playing across her features.
“I can’t tell you that, Abel. I tried to hate you, but I couldn’t. It’s so much easier to hate myself, to hate my own weaknesses. I had never felt such devastation as I did when you cast me aside. I can’t say that I’ll ever forget that. I can’t even say that I’ll get over it, but I would be lying if I said I hated you. I will always have feelings for you, but I also have feelings for my husband. He carried me through the darkest night of my life, right through to the light of the next day. It may seem like a long ten years since my return, but it has felt like the blink of an eye to me. You of all people should know what grieving can do to one’s concept of time.” Alex dropped her gaze to the floor again, but caught Abel’s nodding in her peripheral vision.
“I understand, Alex. Don’t fault me for desiring you. I will wait as long as it takes, and I swear I will make it up to you, Alex. I just need the opportunity.” Alex nodded, shaking, feeling raw.
“I just need some more time.” Abel smiled slightly at her softened tone, leaning in to kiss her forehead.
“My dear, time is all we truly have anymore.” He smiled reassuringly at her, though he hadn’t managed to fully reassure himself. Alex felt his gentle attempt to brush her with his emotions again, relaxing as she felt the old familiar warmth of his love.
Alucard’s curiosity won out and he’d taken to haunting the grounds as the sun went down. He came across that strange woman in black and a silver-haired priest he’d never seen before. He stopped, leaning into a pillar as he watched their exchange. They seemed oblivious to him and he sneered, watching the cold front that the beautiful woman presented to the priest. He offered his arm and she ignored it. Alucard let his curiosity get the best of him, continuing down the corridor that wrapped around the edge of the gardens, watching as the couple entered the same corridor farther on ahead. He drew up close to them, hiding himself in a shroud of shadows in an already darkened corner. He watched as the priest pressed in on the woman and she pulled away until her back pressed against the wall behind her. He leaned in close and their conversation continued. An outburst from the woman hurt his sensitive ears, catching him off guard, but the priest was undeterred. The priest leaned forward and licked up the cheek facing away from Alucard and he grinned ferally into the dark at them. So, their relationship ran deeper than it looked. She pulled away and touched her cheek, her shocked face looking up into the priest’s desperate one. As their conversation continued, he could see by her body language that the young woman was being worn down. The priest smiled, a weak smile, and kissed her forehead. They exchanged a few more words and then parted.
The woman stayed against the wall for some moments, closing her eyes to still her thundering heart. Alucard grinned obscenely at how easily he could read her emotions, though she kept her thoughts locked up tightly. She was dismayed, curiously, and she felt an equal amount of desire and guilt. He basked in the glow of all her different emotions, learning the contour of her personality. He smiled to himself, taking on a more solid form, approaching her slowly, letting his steps ring down the hall. He heard her gasp as she swiped at her eyes and turned to leave the corridor, thereby avoiding him. He swooped in quickly, brushing past her shoulder, startling her. He stepped in front of her, blocking her access to the gardens. She looked up at him defiantly, challengingly. She checked her attitude and softened her features, looking up at him. He towered over her impressively, grinning down at her in a less-than-sane way. She barely subdued her own shudder.
“Can I help you with something, Sir Alucard?” She had injected her voice with a false sweetness that made his teeth ache. He chuckled deeply, leaning in toward her even more.
“I just thought I’d go for a walk and look what I’ve stumbled across.” Her eyes were a bright red from crying and her jaw was tightened in discomfort.
“I can assure you, there are far more interesting things within the Vatican’s walls than myself. Perhaps you’d like to get a bite somewhere else in Rome? There are some really lovely restaurants nearby.” The sarcastically sweet tone was not lost on Alucard, nor was her jibe about food. She knew quite well, precisely what he was, and yet she did not fear him. It had been many a long year since he’d come across a human that wasn’t petrified of his presence, let alone one that had the gall to stand their ground and challenge him. He was delighted.
“Actually, I was hoping I might catch a bite somewhere inside the Vatican. The city itself is too far to go when there is such tantalizing fare right here.” He leaned against the wall of the hallway, further invading her space. She let her head fall back and laughed, a deep almost menacing sound, that made his flesh tingle.
“You should be careful, Count. You never know when your prey may bite back.” She pushed his back against the wall, walking past him rather regally, laughing that bone-chilling laugh. Alucard was taken aback by both the strength with which she pushed him aside and the appellation she’d used. Had she delved into his mind? She couldn’t have without him noticing, but she knew far more than he, or indeed anyone in her organization, had given her credit for. He turned to his right, toward the garden that she’d passed into mere moments before, only to find it quite empty. His shock deepened, but before he could contemplate it, he felt warm breath on his left ear, amusement playing in her voice.
“Be careful, Sir Alucard, you might find the answer to some of the questions racing through your mind.” He didn’t even turn to look for her, he could feel she’d left him utterly alone, almost shaken, for the first time in his immortal life. Almost.
