Six Senses

I imagined Drake as the perfect listener,
because rarely does anyone hear what
he has to say. Until Like ,Like Love ;
when JJ does , and Drake ends up
getting that kiss.






Drake is , despite his last girlfriends' accusations , an excellent
listener . He's had to be . Third child of seven in a big catholic
family , it was a mantra he lived with growing up . Listen to the nuns .
Listen to your mother . Listen to me , so help me God , if you get
that girl pregnant...

It isn't that his hearing is any better than the average guy , or his
attention span any longer . It's just that he hears things , little things ,
that other people seem to miss . A turn in phrase , an inflection
in tone . The way a sentance starts to lead into a question , a
statement starts to turn instead to a confession .

And the things he's heard about his co-workers ? He could
write a book . But that would make him a writer , and that's not what
he does best . Instead he listens . And learns .

Most of his fellow officers think the commisioner is an elitist ass ,
if they think of him at all .Drake knows better . Berkeley Rose is
actually a very funny guy . His underbreath asides during staff meetings
have made Drake bite back a chuckle more than once . Wouldn't do
to have the boss know he's on to him , see . Might blow his whole
sleepy eyed , slacker demeanor.

Ted is easy too . Ted's the cleverst voyeur Drake's ever known. If
it wasn't for his big mouth , the fact that he has a wandering eye
--for his male co-workers, no less--would never have been apparent.


After listening to him ( repeatedly ) describe Drake's own partner's
pristine anatomy to him ( " I mean , do you think the guy shaves
his legs , or what ? ! " ) , Drake might have wondered about his friend's
sexual orientation . No , Ted was harmless . Just a peeper , albeit not a
quiet one , once you loosened his tongue with a few nods and smiles
of encouragement . That always keeps 'em talking .

JJ was easily the enigma of their little group . Drake had been listening to
him ( non-stop , it seemed ) for nearly two years now , and still his partner
could surprise him .JJ was , what Drake would have labeled , a " Good Boy "
He rarely called in , never swore , ( okay , the F-word once , when he broke two
ribs taking down a rape suspect ) , and always phoned his mother on weekends .

Everyone was still " Senpai" after nearly two years on the job . He was
unappologetically gay , and wore his heart on his sleeve when it came
to Dee . Spoke jelously -yet politely - to Ryo , and flirted shamelessly
with Drake and nearly every other man at the station . " Mr. GoodyTwo Shoes " ,
the ill-fated Max had called him .

Mr. Goody two Shoes had stolen Ted's prize leather jacket .

Drake glimpsed it there , tucked away in JJ's front hall closet , when he'd
come over one night for pizza . Remembered the gleeful rendition Ted had
given him describing JJ's naked body in the showers , and realized who
else might have been a good listener that day . ( " I may be gay ; I may like
to bottom , but by God don't EVER call me a girl ! " )

Looked at the coat , shut the door , and turned to see JJ's deadly sweet smile ,
and he had Pizza house on the phone , and did Drake want pepsi or coke ....?

Always the good ones .

Like Ryo .

Drake's heard most of the Dee-Ryo chase game second hand , through walls or from
behind closed doors . Oh he knows the chase is over , Dee's won . But the game is still
being played . And the intriguing part , if Drake was a deep enough thinker to be
intrigued in the first place , is who's doing the playing now .

Ryo is . You see , Ryo is a tease .

Dee's a walking hormone ; Drake knows that ; has known since they were uniforms
back in the old days . But he's never seen Dee like this , reduced to a puddle of
goo if Ryo so much as bats an eye . If it wasn't true love , it would make Drake
puke .

At first Drake thought Ryo was the innocent , virginal type , not even realizing
the effect he had on Dee . And he probably was , at first . Deep down , however ,
Ryo is as competitive as JJ , as intellectual as Rose , and as lusty as Dee .
He just wraps it in a more cultured, cashmere sweatered , red-wine flavored
package . All the blushing , the little sighs of acquiesence , as he lets
Dee have his way , only to shoot him down again minutes later...

It's similar to the JJ-Dee chase game in a way . Drake used to try to get Dee
to admit he secretly liked the attention he got from being pursued . Inside ,
Drake knows Ryo thrives on the attention as well , using it to controll Dee
like a dominatrix with a slave on a leash . Ah yes , the quiet ones .
Sneaky as females , Drake thinks .

Dee of course is anything but quiet . He's loud , proud , and in your face .
Thankfully , under all that a decent guy lurks ( despite Rose's accusations ) .
He's a great cop whose mouth and actions have unfortunately gotten him
written up more times than Drake can count .

He's also openly bisexual , but has thankfully never hit on Drake ( " you're
too hairy , man . " ) Not that Drake felt insulted in any way . Dee is just
too honest . He's also one of the best friend's Drake 's ever had . And
he'd hate to lose a friendship over something as ridiculous as sex .

There are many things Dee never says , though , and still Drake hears
them nearly every day . " JJ , get off me !! How many times do I have to tell you
I'm not interested ? ! " ( " I don't want to hurt you anymore , I can't give you
what you want . " ) " Aw , C'mon Ryo , just a little kiss ? No one's
looking . " ( " Are you ashamed to be seen with me ? " ) " Fuck you ,
Rose , Ryo's mine . " ( " I know you're better than me . Better for him .
But I'm the one who really loves him ; not you " ) . " C'mon ,
Drake my man . Let's go get a beer . Hell , I'll even pay . " ( " I had a fight
with Ryo and can't bear to go home yet . Let's get drunk , and maybe
I'll forget how lonely I am . " ) .

Drakes gets lonely too , sometimes . So it's no surprise to his ears .
when he hears JJ asking him out to dinner after work , the answer is yes .
