Disclaimer: I do not own Fushigi Yuugi, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
Like I said earlier, the more I think about it, the more I
think I got the Tamahome/Miaka ‘which world shall we live in’ thing backward,
but at this point, I don’t care. If it
really bothers ya, think of this as an AU; the way this story is going, it’s
gonna majorly break off from the series pretty soon anyway. On with the story!
Ch. 3: Harsh Truths
************************************************************************
The group came across a group of nomads later that day who
were willing to lodge them for a while.
They were all extremely grateful as Tamahome had saved the life of the
chief’s son.
Once they heard that they were the Suzaku seishi and
priestess, all kinds of helpful information about the Genbu warriors came
pouring out. Unfortunately, some of
their helpful information actually made things worse. After hearing that Genbu couldn’t allow his priestess to stay in
their world, Miaka was even more certain that wishing Tamahome back with her
would work. She refused to be convinced
of anything else, and she was heartily sick of everyone sticking their noses
into her business.
Both Mitsukake and Nuriko kept at her to talk to Tasuki, or
at the very least talk to Tamahome to hear their side of the story. Even Chiriko had asked her why his adopted
older brother was so upset. But she knew
there was no point in talking to either one of them. Tamahome was so turned around that he obviously didn’t know what
was going on. And Tasuki would just lie
to her about whatever it was he did to Tamahome, she was sure.
The only person that hadn’t said anything to her was
Chichiri. ‘Maybe that means he’s on my
side,’ she thought. ‘He may even have
some ideas on how to get Tamahome back!’
Determined, Miaka threaded her way through the camp looking
for Chichiri early that evening. She
found him keeping warm by a fire, and threw herself down next to him. “Hello Miaka-chan, no da,” he greeted her as
if nothing was wrong, irritating her immediately. That he was wearing that smiling, happy mask while her whole
world was crumbling around her irked her even further.
“How can you be so casual right now?” she burst out. “Tamahome thinks we shouldn’t be together
anymore. He must just be confused or
something. He said he loved me, he even
said he wanted to marry me! That can’t
change just like that!”
When Chichiri didn’t say anything, she went on. “Tasuki must have done something,
right? Or maybe it’s some kind of
spell, like the kodoku. You could
reverse it, couldn’t you? If you can’t,
I have to find some other way to make him give Tamahome back. Once we get the Shinzaho and summon Suzaku,
I’ll be able to use one of my wishes to get him back.”
Chichiri had heard enough.
He slid his mask off and faced Miaka with a stony expression that
surprised her. “You keep saying that
you want Nakago to give you Yui back.
You want Tasuki to give you Tamahome back. Are they the only people in this world who matter to you?”
Miaka started. “What
do you mean?”
“Konan is in trouble.
Thousands of people will suffer and die when Kutou invades. One wish to Suzaku for protection will save
countless lives, but the only wish you seem to care about is being able to end
up with both Tamahome and Yui.”
The girl felt a twinge of guilt at that, which she
ignored. “I love them both very
much. What’s wrong with wanting to have
them both back with me where they should be?”
Chichiri sighed.
“You once told Hotohori that you can’t force people to change their
hearts, and that is true. Nakago didn’t
take Yui away from you; she chose to believe his lies and go
along with him. Yes, something terrible
happened to her, but bad things happen to people all the time, and not all of
those people choose a dark path.
“And Tasuki didn’t take Tamahome away either, being with
Tasuki is something that Tamahome decided on his own,” Chichiri added.
“That can’t be true,” Miaka protested. “Why is everyone always trying to defend
him, anyway? I’m the one who’s
had her heart ripped out here!”
“We defend him because we can see that he didn’t do anything
wrong; in fact, he saved Tamahome’s life.
Is it right for you to punish him for that?”
‘Saved his life…?’
“Well, of course not, if that were true… but it isn’t fair. Tamahome and I are supposed to be together
forever. I can’t just let this go. I love Tamahome!”
The monk decided that it was time to drop the other shoe,
hoping it would force her to rethink things. “Do you really love him?
Think about it. He’s kind,
handsome, and the first time you met him, he saved your life, and has been
saving your life ever since. Are sure
it’s not just a crush?”
Miaka’s anger at Chichiri’s words choked her so badly she
couldn’t speak. Only little kids got
crushes. Of course she loved Tamahome!
Chichiri got up and walked a few feet away before
stopping. “You could ignore what
everyone has been telling you and try to find some way to split the two of them
up. But before you do that, you should
be aware of the consequences.
“We would fail in our mission to summon Suzaku and more
lives would be lost. They are much
stronger together than apart, and they may actually die as neither one could
endure the separation. Could you handle
that?”
Miaka just gaped at him wordlessly.
“Just think about it, and don’t act out of anger. Nothing good can come of it. Trust me, I know that better than anyone,”
he said sadly. With that, Chichiri
donned his mask once more and departed, leaving Miaka alone in stunned silence.
************************************************************************
After a few moments, shook her head angrily. Chichiri had to be wrong. She and Tamahome belonged together. How could their mission depend on Tasuki and
Tamahome being together? It just didn’t
make any sense. And they wouldn’t
really die; Chichiri was just exaggerating.
People don’t die just from being separated. Tamahome would get over it and realize that wishing them back to
her world was the right thing for both of them.
As Miaka walked back toward the tents, she saw Tasuki emerge
from one of them. She made a quick
decision to take the chance to appeal to him one more time. Steeling herself for the confrontation, she
began to follow him, but stopped short when she saw Tamahome a short distance
away waving good night to the small boy he had saved earlier that day.
After the boy went on his way, both men froze where they
were. Slowly, almost reluctantly, each
man turned to look at the other. Miaka
gasped at the tension in the air. It
was heavy. Neither made a move to come
any closer to the other, but slowly Tamahome lifted his hand palm up toward
Tasuki, pleading. Tasuki visibly
flinched as if struck. The anguish in
both their eyes was plain as Tasuki finally managed to tear himself from the
spot he was rooted to, stumbling backward before striding quickly off into the
trees.
Desperate and frustrated, Tamahome balled up his fists and
looked for something to punch.
Unwilling to disturb the camp, he settled for a string of colorful
curses that would have made Tasuki proud as he stormed off into his tent.
Miaka’s plan fell by the wayside as she slid slowly to the
ground, coming to a painful realization.
‘He’s never looked at me that way.
Maybe… Chichiri was right, this is different.’ Seeing their pain was a cold slap to the
face that finally rattled her cage of self-pity.
Tamahome and Tasuki weren’t trying to rub her nose in
anything. In fact, it looked like they
were going out of their way to keep from hurting her further.
She had told Tamahome that she loved him, but in all
honesty, she couldn’t say that she cared for him any more than she did for
Hotohori, who had always been there for her, even when Tamahome wasn’t. If she had met him first, she would probably
be with the young emperor right now.
Hell, she had even fallen for Nakago’s stunning looks when they first
met.
Which meant that she was keeping Tamahome and Tasuki apart
for no other reason than foolish pride.
After what she had just seen, she realized that threatening to take
Tamahome away had been beyond cruel.
‘I’ve got to fix this, now!’
************************************************************************
Miaka tapped on Tamahome’s tent. “Go away!” he called from inside.
Miaka took a deep breath, and went in anyway, stopping short
just inside. Tamahome was sitting on
his bedroll, crying. After studying him
for a moment, she could finally see what Chichiri had been trying to tell
her. He looked strained and completely
worn out. “Tamahome?” she ventured.
“What do you want?” he asked, sounding defeated.
Gingerly, she sat down across from her warrior. “I want you to tell me why you want h-him
and not me.”
He laughed bitterly, but answered her question. “We’re connected in some way that I can’t
begin to understand, and it’s a much deeper feeling than what I have for
you. I’m sorry that it hurts you, but
it is true. I just need him.”
Hearing this, Miaka began to forget why she came to see
Tamahome in the first place. “This all
just seems too sudden. I mean, why
would Tasuki do this right before we’re about to find the Shinzaho? Don’t you think he’d–”
“Stop it,” Tamahome growled. “He didn’t do anything.
If you want to be mad at someone, be mad at me. I went after him, and you
couldn’t possibly imagine what I put him through. If I hadn’t… done what I did, he never would have said a thing
and I never would have known how he felt.”
Miaka couldn’t accept the fact that the bandit hadn’t
started all this, and so she ignored it.
“How do you know that we don’t just need more time? If we stay together, we could be connected
in a special way too! Come back with me
and give us a chance. I’m sure Tasuki
will be fine, he always is!”
Tamahome stared at her, incredulous. “‘He always is’? He left behind people he’s supposed to be responsible for just to
protect you. After you got back from Kutou,
he spent days in pain with a broken body just so Mitsukake could heal us both
first. And you want to repay him by
leaving him heartbroken and alone? I
thought you had a good heart, but you really don’t care about anyone other than
me and Yui, do you? I’m an idiot for
letting things go on this long.”
He got up, disgusted with her dismissal of Tasuki. “Waste a wish on me if you want. It won’t work. I will find a way to stay here.
I’m not going anywhere.”
Tamahome headed to the door, determined to find Tasuki. A quiet voice stopped him. “I’m sorry.”
He turned. Miaka had
her head down, tears splashing on her clenched hands. “You’re the second person today to tell me that I was ignoring
everyone but you and Yui. You’re
right.” She sighed deeply, trying to
find the courage to say what needed to be said. “I’m not saying I’m over any of this, but you should go to him. I’ll… I’ll try to think about what you told
me.”
Tamahome just stared at her for a moment, the look on his
face betraying the fact that he was completely amazed by what she had just
said. Then, slowly, the radiant smile
that he turned on her before he practically flew out of the tent was proof that
finally, she had made the right choice.
**********************
Yatta!! Miaka’s on
board. Kinda sorta. Meh, I’m sure Nuriko will be glad to make
her feel better (but I don’t intend to go there). Now, the real fun starts.
Sorry for the Miaka-centric chappie, but it was necessary. Next chapter is all about the guys.
OK, I lied about the chapter length earlier. The next chapter will be short, but it’s
content will make up for that, I hope.
I hope to see you all next week!
To Tasukigirl78: Yeah, I kinda feel bad for putting them
through all this. But I’ll make up for
it! After the next chapter is over
with, I don’t think anything’s gonna be able to split them up again. ~_^
