Tempting Fate
Chapter Three - "Tempting Fate"
This is taking far too long for my satisfaction. I would have thought that the sudden lack of the uprising of violence I created to distract them would in fact peak their interest, but no. These digidestined are slacking off, and taking this silence within the digital world as a vacation. A candle flickers its most violent when it is about to die; perhaps they believe that I am gone. Perhaps the last few embers of that war should spark up to perk their interests. To the contrary, however, I don\'t want all of them. I only want one of them; a test product. All of them will respond to violence. Perhaps I\'m being too impatient. Shall I wait, Wormmon? Shall I give it one more day?

"Well," spoke up Mimi, after a slight pause. "If Cody\'s leaving, I think I\'ll go too. I have a new hot tub, waiting for me at my hotel." How curious. Sora wasn\'t the first to leave, this time. She usually was. Well, whatever they were talking about, they couldn\'t do it while she was there. Obviously, she\'d interrupted some sort of important meeting, about these \'Veemon\', \'Kaiser\', and \'Digital World\' things. She\'d find out soon enough; Davis was starving for female attention, and he\'d be an easy mark for the information. If Joe ever found out she was intending to do such a thing, he\'d probably disown her and claim he\'d never even dated her. She\'d done alot of changing in her last couple months, it\'d probably altered who "Jade" really was.
"TK and I have a movie to catch, too. It was nice seeing you again, Jade. Perhaps Tai and I will have you over for tea and sushi." Kari spoke, more politely than anything. Kari might\'ve been the only female of the lot that liked her. Mimi and Sora never has before. Yolei was hard to place though; she was nice to everyone around her. The trio left quickly, leaving Jade in the presence of the other seven.
"How\'s the garage band, Matt?" Jade questioned, trying to make conversation. Last she\'d seen him, he was trying to make it with that band of his.
"Well, we\'ve been on tour a couple times, and have two CD\'s out....Nothing all that big..." he replied, modestly. That was big news for Jade.
"Seriously? That\'s so exciting, Matt! I always knew you\'d make it."
"Thanks. How\'s the reporting thing going? Found any big breaks?" Jade frowned. It was too bad that she didn\'t have any good news as well.
"Well, no. The Mayan Temple I went into actually didn\'t have a ghost like the source claimed. It was just a bird escaped from a neaby village, who\'d learned to whistle like the wind. It sounded like a ghost to the very paranoid traveller. It\'s a shame, really. I\'d\'ve loved to snap some shots of a ghost."
"Wow, that\'s kinda lame. What are you going to tell your boss, Jade?" interjected Tai, rather untactfully. Sora whapped him on the shoulder, as if to chide him.
"Actually," Joe piped up, "I think that in and of itself is a cool story. A tamed bird impersonating a ghost? I\'d read about that." What a sweet heart. She knew there was no story there.
"I think I\'m going to just say that I couldn\'t get in because of village law. It might get me some time to find a new lead and get him to forget about it. But, right now, I think I need to borrow Davis\' shower. I haven\'t had a chance to use one. Do you mind, Davis?" At the hail of his name, Davis snapped out of his trance, staring out the window. He\'d been thinking about poor Cody.
"Wha-? Oh. Yeah, sure. If you need clothes, I\'m sure you\'ll fit into something of Jun\'s..." Jade really didn\'t need a shower. But if she burned enough time, everyone would have left, and she\'d have the perfect excuse to let Davis catch a gimpse of her in nothing but a towel. Sure it was evil; but she had to know what the big secret was. She\'d known that Joe was hiding something from her a long time ago; she didn\'t know it involved the entire group of his friends. Now she simply had to know. Maybe it was her cat-like curiosity, or maybe it was her need to feel included. But either way, she wouldn\'t rest until she knew. Jade slipped herself away into the bathroom, and made a beeline for the shower. She couldn\'t just stand there like a stupid ass and not have a shower. She may as well take one. If any of them decided to walk past, they\'d discover that the shower wasn\'t on. So for the sake of thoroughness, she flipped on the water, and began to strip herself.
"Wow, Joe. She\'s...different." Matt spoke up, once the water was running.
"What do you mean?"
"She seems alot more...Pushy."
"Where\'d you get THAT from? Her talking about work, or asking you about your band?"
"Well, she was alot more softspoken and shy before, I guess. Alot like how you used to be. Now she seems alot more like...Davis."
"Heeeeeeey!" the goggle-headded teen complained, but the boys ignored him. Tai snickered, as Sora gave Matt a hairy eye.
"Maybe that\'s a good thing for her." Izzy pointed out. He\'d almost totally become a wall ornament until now, and didn\'t really bother talking. "Perhaps Jade is trying to extrovert herself more in the interest of her career."
"Maybe. But something\'s not right with that girl. I can\'t place it....But something in her has changed for the worse."
"Maybe we need to take off..." Tai commented, and Sora nodded. "We\'re not going to get time to talk about you-know-what. We may as well have what\'s left of our afternoon." Davis frowned. He\'d been looking forward to the evening-long company.
"I guess so. We\'ll plan another one, WITHOUT extra company, in a few days after Cody gets back."

Davis flopped lazilly down on the couch, resting his feet on the coffee table. Everyone had left, and Jade had been in the shower almost fourty minutes now. Women always took such long showers; he didn\'t get it. He himself maxed ten minutes under the shower, and that was when he really stunk. Women never smelled bad; what did they have to wash? He flicked on the TV, and began flipping through the channels. Maybe something worthwhile was on. At 4 pm on a friday...as if. He shut it off after about thirty seconds. Maybe he should check on Jade. Fourty minutes was a bit much. He stood, and started to walk over.
"HEY JADE, I DON\'T THINK THE HOT WATER TANK FOR THIS BUILDING REALLY MEANT TO HANDLE A FOURTY MINUTE SHOWER...." he called through the door. After there was no responce, he knocked. "Jade?" Again, silence. Now he was getting worried. But should he go in? What if she simply hadn\'t heard him? What if she was stark naked? Oh that\'s brilliant. Obviously she\'s naked. He knocked once again, this time louder. "JADE!" The door tugged open. Davis was greeted by a waft of heated steam. It cleared quickly, leaivng Davis to gawk at the form of Jade, with nothing but a towel wrapped around her. He blushed, and turned away.
"Sorry, sorry! I wasn\'t peeking, I-"
"Its okay, Davis. I am completely covered." Jade interrupted, with a cute smile. "I guess it\'s a little different with a towel though, considering that I\'m not wearing anything else, and all it takes to pull this thing off is to flick your wrist..." Davis reddened further.
"Uhhhhh yeah."
"Boy would that be embarrassing, having my towel fall off. All I\'d have on then is just water..." she kept on, using a mildly sultry voice.
"Mhm...I think I\'ll go get food now..." Davis rushed, and dashed off. His pants seemed a bit more tentlike to Jade\'s wandering eye. She laughed faintly. This was almost too easy, she thought, as she glanced over to Jun\'s bedroom. Maybe she\'d have something sexy. Would that be weird for Davis, though? Her eyes slid back to the bathroom, where her clothing was. She\'d probably be wiser to wear her own duds. If she had someone coming on to her wearing something that belonged to a relative, she\'d become very grossed out. Her camo shirt and black jeans would do just fine. As soon as she had them on, she found her way to the kitchen, and leaned against the wall. Davis was busy making nachos. Typical male; choosing junk food for a snack. Truth was, she could probably go for some junk food.
"So, what were you guys talking about before you ran in to me?" Davis glanced over his shoulder at her.
"Huh? Oh, uhhh, nothing that matters, really."
"Doesn\'t matter, huh? Well, that\'s a shame. I thought it would have been something important." she stepped closer, pretending to peek at his food. She rested a hand casually on his back. "You making enough for two?..."
"Yeah, I figured you\'d be hungry...And, everyone liked nachos. You like nachos, right?" Jade shifted her weight, leaning closer to Davis. He was beginning to look a little flushed. Good.
"Doesn\'t everyone?" she herself didn\'t really get why this kind of stuff got guys going, but it worked for whatever reason.
"My family loves it when I make my nachos. I guess it\'s a hidden talent."
"I bet that\'s not the only thing you\'re good at..."Davis flushed a little deeper.
"Uhhh, I guess I can make a pretty mean stir-fry..."
"That\'s not what I meant...I dunno Davis, you\'ve gotten to be quite the cutie..." Jade let her hand slip lower on his back. Poor Davis didn\'t know quite what was happening. She was Joe\'s girl, ex or not, wasn\'t she?
