Chapter 2: Hang-ups and Hangovers
“What?”
The woman at the front desk sighed before repeating herself once more, “I said, the room number is 205. Your luggage will be delivered accordingly.”
“Oh- uh, thank you.” Shuichi blurted out.
“You’re welcome.” she said without looking up and handed him his key, “Please enjoy your stay, Mr. Shindou.” The singer took that as his cue to leave.
He had made it half way to the elevator when he heard it… ‘Oh gods,’ but it was too late.
“OH. MY. GAWD. AMY!! AMY! QUICK GET OVER HERE!”
“What are you—OH MY GAWD! IT-IT’S HIM!!”
“Who? -WAIIII! SHINDOU-KUN!! HE’S HERE!!!”
No. No. NO! He escaped them when he left Japan… or so he thought. He had fans here too?!? CHRIST! Looking quickly to his left he saw his sanctuary, upon which was written one word: “STAIRS.” Shuichi bolted, swearing he left a cloud of dust in his wake, and flung himself through the door and up the stairs. Barely making it to his room, he slumped against the locked door and sighed. ‘Looks like I’m gonna have to change my appearance a little.’ He’d take care of that tomorrow though. Right now all he wanted was a bath and, his eyes trailed to the mini-bar in the corner, ‘To forget.’
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I’m not going to bother asking you what you were thinking because clearly you weren’t, but…” the sound of a gun being cocked was evident, “I DO expect an explanation of some sort. Are we clear?”
Yuki took a drag of his cigarette, seemingly uninterested, but truth be told he really felt uneasy around his ex’s manager. The trigger happy man was unreadable, if a bit off his rocker, and the writer hated unpredictability. Despite how much the man may have disconcerted him however, Yuki resented being talked down to like a child or subordinate, so he merely shrugged.
“Hn, my personal life is my business, and is of no concern to you.” the writer stated lowly as he blew his smoke in the other’s direction.
“It concerns me when it interferes with MY business.” K glared.
Yuki snorted a bit, “The brat left you of his own volition; I had nothing to do with that. Seeing as how you have no idea where he is or why he went I’d say it’s a safe bet he didn’t want you to know.”
K’s grip on the handle of his weapon tightened briefly. Damn, but that man was so infuriating. Sighing in an attempt to calm his nerves, the gunslinger spoke again, “I was hoping to resolve this peacefully, but you leave me no choice. Fine, Yuki-san, I’ll just let the President handle it like he said he would.”
Eiri faltered slightly at this. Tohma? What did he have to do with anything?
“I see I caught your attention. Well, good day then, Yuki-san.” With that, he left, leaving the writer standing in the doorway of his apartment, a sour expression etched over his features.
Not five minutes later, the phone rang. Yuki rolled his eyes, ‘If this is who I think it is…’
“Moshi Moshi.”
“Good afternoon, Eiri-san.”
‘Gods, how did I know.’ he thought irritatedly. “Tohma, what do you want?” Cringing, he tried in his mind to deny what he knew would be the answer. ‘No. K did NOT just call you as he left my apartment. You are NOT going to get involved in my personal life. I am NOT going to get a lecture from my sister when you tell her what happened today.'
“Want? What- can’t your brother-in-law call you from time to time?”
‘From time to time my ASS. Wait for it … wait for i—'
“Oh, before I forget…”
‘Bingo. Here it comes.’
“…K called me. He said he just left your apartment, I’m sure I don’t have to explain to you why.” There was a brief pause on the other end, “Yuki, you know I hate to meddle in your personal life…”
‘Oh gods, WHY???’ Yuki barely repressed the harsh sigh that threatened to accompany his inner monologue.
“…but your actions as of late have forced my hand. Shindou may be a handful, but he was still an asset to the company. Now, I find myself with no singer, a leaderless portion of Bad Luck, and a producer currently in the midst of a mental breakdown.”
“Hn. So tell me, Tohma. When does the part come where I’m supposed to care, hm?” Okay, so that was only just slightly above childish, but really, the author had had enough. He took amusement in the fact that he could practically see his brother-in-law glaring into the receiver. ‘The sooner he gets pissed at me, the better, and the quicker he’ll hang up.’
“Don’t play these games with me, Eiri, I’m not in the mood. I’m not hanging up until you tell me what happened or at LEAST where we can find Shindou-san.”
‘Shit.’ Yuki sighed and ran a hand through his hair, “I have no idea where he went. Truth be told, I didn’t even know he’d left Japan until K showed up on my doorstep. My first guess would be somewhere in the States, but other than that I can’t tell.”
Tohma was silent for a moment, “New York, perhaps?”
“No, that’s the one place I can say he won’t be headed. He’s an idiot at times, but if the brat doesn’t want to be found he can make himself scarce. New York is the first place he’d expect anybody to look; also, it’s the one other place that… would remind him of me. Seeing as how he’s left the country, forgetting is probably at the top of his list, not reminiscing.” His tone got softer and softer with every sentence. Saying those words didn’t exactly make him feel all that great. It stabbed at something in the center of his chest; made him almost feel… regret?
He shook his head violently at that, but he couldn’t shake the feeling away. The one boy who’d managed to worm his way into the writer’s life, the only person to make him feel anything other than anger or indifference, the one who sang just for HIM, was gone. And even though he’d never seen the younger man pick up one of his books, Shuichi was his greatest admirer, the one who wanted to know everything about him. His biggest fan… had left. Damn, and they had no idea where he’d gone either.
Tohma groaned at the change of the author’s tone and the prolonged silence. He knew what this meant. “Ugh… Eiri, PLEASE tell me you didn’t just throw him out callously in a fit of irritation, and only stop to think about it later.” It was quiet on the other line. If Seguchi could’ve, he would have gotten a stick and poked the writer with it ‘til he got an answer. He sighed, “Yuki… I can here you regretting over there.” There was a light growl in reply, and the president had the sudden urge to thump his head repeatedly across his desk until sweet unconsciousness decided to claim him. So he was right then. “Listen, Yuki, I-“
“I have to go.” Click
… “WHAT?!!?” Seguchi screeched, but all he got in reply was the sound of the dial tone. He indulged himself in one good head-thunking against the top of his desk, then reached to dial another number. He’d call Mika, she’d want to hear about this.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ah, it was morning in L.A. The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and the celebrities were, inevitably …sleeping off their hangovers.
Shuichi was no exception, however, he wasn’t really sleeping; more like, curled in the fetal position on his bed trying to keep his head from splitting open. Now he remembered why he hated drinking. He couldn’t really remember last night; he only just vaguely remembered passing out in the bathroom, then waking up in a pool of his own vomit. The thought in itself almost forced him back into said bathroom. All in all it was probably one of the most disgusting moments of his life, only it was overridden by the head ache that had followed immediately after getting up. The singer barely had managed to throw himself into the shower and rinse down, after which he had thrown on his boxers and curled up in his current position on the bed.
If that wasn’t enough his memory seemed to be able to dredge up nothing but flashes of amber eyes and blond hair. That was the LAST thing he wanted to think about right now. Besides, there were things he still had to do. He had to concentrate on getting a new identity, finding a job, and looking for an apartment.
‘Ugh,’ His stomach lurched at the very thought of moving. Unfortunately all his plans would have to be put on hold until the 3 aspirin he had consumed did their job. Then maybe he would feel alright enough to function. Until then, maybe he could attempt to get a bit more sleep. Shuichi struggled for a bit, but soon found himself drifting off into a fitful sleep, while visions of amber and gold flickered through his subconscious.
