Chapter 2
The next morning Integra
returned to her office after Henry had his morning feeding and
bath. No sooner had she walked in the door the phone started to
ring. She hurried over to her desk and picked up the phone.
"Yes?" She asked.
"Sir Hellsing, we've
recieved word of a brutal attack that occured last night. The
bodies have been taken to one of our examiners. There was an eye
wittness who claimed the attack was perpetrated by
something...non-human."
"The matter will be
looked into immiedately." Integra answered as she hung up
the phone.
"Walter," She
summoned on her intercom.
"Yes Sir Integra."
Walter's voice answered over the speaker.
"I must leave the manor
for an investigation. Inform Kenneth and make sure he takes care
of Henry while I'm gone." Integra instructed.
"Yes Sir."
"And Walter, have Alucard
and Seras informed of the matter. I have a feeling I'm going to
be needing them both." Integra added.
"Is it that serious Sir
Integra?" Walter asked.
"We'll know after I
return." Integra answered.
##################################################
That evening...
"I returned from an
autopsy performed on three individuals today. A man and a woman
were both vicisciously attacked by something defintely not human.
There was also a third victim. There was such mutilation done to
the body dental records have to be checked to determine the
gender of the victim. The face was so torn apart identification
was impossible. I've obtained photographs of the victims. They
were literally torn apart." Integra said pointing to the
photographs.
"I've never seen vampiric
attacks like this except done by ghouls." Seras said.
"We do not believe this
to be an attack by a vampiric entity. An eye witness said they
saw something that looked like a huge animal, but also somewhat
humanoid. Unfortunately it was very dark and the witness had
difficulty acurately describing what exactly was attacking the
victims." Integra explained.
She took a brief puff from her
cigar and continued speaking. "There was no sign of blood
being taken from the bodies, other than what had already been
splattered all over the ground. So that leads me to believe it
was not a vampire who is responcible for this attack. We are
however having to take care of information control since the
bodies were found by several other eyewitnesses. For them it is
being explained as a wild animal that got loose and tore apart
three people. Animal control is scouting the area to add
validation to the story."
"A particularly strong
and viscious creature could have done this, but I don't know any
animals here in London that could be capable of doing this kind
of damage. The victims were practically disembowled and partially
devoured. Only place large predators would be kept that I am
aware of would be the London Zoo. And they're pretty secure about
keeping their animals kept in the zoo and away from the
public." Seras said.
"The London Zoo has been
questioned about any possible animal escape they may have had in
the past two nights. They have reported absolutely no such
escapes and all animals that could be brought into suspect are
accounted for." Integra replied.
"There is one thought
that comes to mindafter seeing the victims and hearing of the eye
wittness account. I believe you have seen devistation like this
before have you not, Alucard?" She asked.
"Yes, I have. Werewolves
can do such damage." The elder vampire answered plainly.
"Werewolves?" Seras
asked.
"Yes. While the primary
target we hunt are vampiric entities, Hellsing has had a few run
ins with werewolves. I trust you know what a werewolf is
Seras?" Integra questioned.
"I know about the
legends. A werewolf is a person who has been attacked by another
werewolf and himself becomes a werewolf. At the light of the full
moon he loses all control over his human nature and assumes that
of a wolf killing friend and family or anyone who crosses its
path. The person can also have had a curse laid upon him, again
assuming the form of a wolf at the light of the full moon."
Seras answered.
"That is correct. But
there is another way a person can turn from man into animal that
has nothing to do with the full moon. There have been accounts in
Europe of people making covenants with the devil in order to
obtain the power to change from human to animal. Such people were
usually found out and tried for witchcraft and devil worship.
They were executed for their crimes. I cannot say for certain if
this is such a creature, but no stone must be left unturned. We
must assume that whether this person was cursed against their
will or willing accepted the power, there is a creature out there
who can do unspeakable harm to the populace." Integra
explained.
"And you think it's
possible that this werewolf could have willingly made a deal with
the devil to obtain this power?" Seras asked.
"I cannot say for
certain." Integra stated. "Walter, tell Zoey I have a
job for her to do. I need her to do some research for me."
"Yes Sir." Walter
said with a half bow and left her office.
"Alucard, you and Seras
are dismissed for the time being. But don't get too comfortable.
The moment I know what we're dealing with you both will be going
to hunt and destroy this thing."
##################################################
As Integra requested, Zoey sat
at her computer doing research on various sites about werewolves.
She read legends and myths and stories from several countries in
Europe about the dreaded creature. She'd already spent an hour
reading numerous accounts, many from Germany. She rubbed her
forehead and blinked her eyes. She clicked a link to enter
another site and found an account from England. She began to read
intently.
As she was reading the story
Seras appeared in her room. She walked beside her friend noticing
the story she was examining.
"Found something
interesting?" She asked.
"I think I may have.
There's an account out of the village of Salsbury about a man who
made a pact with the devil. In exchange for his immortal soul he
was given the power to change into a wolf at will. He wore some
kind of device that allowed him to change his form. With this
power he was able to stalk and terrorize his prey without anyone
ever knowing it was him. I'm going to print this account out so
Sir Integra can look it over." Zoey answered.
"Good idea. I'm sure
she'll be very interested in reading this report." Seras
replied.
"Do you think it could be
a creature like this causing trouble?" Zoey asked.
"I don't know. But Sir
Integra seems to think it's a werewolf that killed two people
last night. Do you know much about werewolves Zoey?"
"Other than what I read
and movies I've seen, not really. I admit I was always more
interested in vampires than werewolves. I remember the movie 'An
American Werewolf in London.' Some college student got attacked
by a werewolf and it killed his friend, and the friend kept
showing up in different stages of decay trying to get the man to
kill himself before he killed others." Zoey answered.
"Oh yah, I remember that
one too." Seras said.
"Mariah needs to be
fed." Alucard's voice told her mentally.
"I better go. Mariah
needs to be fed again. I just fed her three hours ago. I swear,
she's only a few months old and already as voracious as her
father." Seras replied.
##################################################
In another part of London:
In a rather seedy London motel
a man and a woman sat in their room having a couple of drinks.
"Do they suspect anything?" The woman asked.
"No. Right now they are
chalking the attack to a wild animal." The man answered.
"You know there was an
eyewitness. Why let a witness go?" The woman questioned.
"I want to see where
suspcision goes. That is where you shall be the greatest use to
me. My captors are dead and rotten. But their lines may yet go
on. And they shall be the fodder for my revenge. You must find
them for me." The man said.
"Of course. They shall
suffer as their ancestors made you suffer. And they will never
know it was you. Even if they prove it was a werewolf, they can
never prove it was you." The woman replied.
"I shall feast upon the
unsuspecting cattle of this city once more. And once I've had my
fill, I shall feast upon even more. And this time, there will be
no stopping me."
##################################################
Integra sat looking over the
information Zoey found on the web. She looked up at Zoey.
"This could prove to be very useful as a reference. Thank
you Zoey. That will be all for now. I will call you if I need you
again. Dismissed."
"Yes Sir." Zoey said
and left Integra's office.
On her way to her room she ran
into Pickman. "Sir Integra keeping you busy Zoey?" He
asked.
"Not at the moment. I
just finished looking up some information for her on
werewolves." Zoey answered.
"Werewolves? That's a new
one on me. When I joined Hellsing they were dealing mostly with
vampire and ghouls, but werewolves?"
"She said they had a few
dealings with them in the past, but she wasn't specific about
when or where. She thinks that a young man and woman may have
been killed by a werewolf last night."
"Well, it would certainly
be a challenge. Vampires are intelligent and cunning creatures
that can penetrate your thoughts and know your move before you
even get the chance to make it. Werewolves are from what I
understand are unhinged beasts with the strength of several
strong men." Pickman replied.
"While she can't be
absolutely certain, Sir Integra thinks this werewolf could be
different from the typical kind man is used to hearing about in
stories. She thinks this one could have the power to transform at
will, not at the light of the full moon." Zoey said.
"You mean there could be
a person out there who can turn into a werewolf whenever he
choses? Well, that certain does complicate things. Not to mention
making a potential mission that much more dangerous."
"Stewart, you don't think
you'll have to do battle with this thing do you?" Zoey asked
with concern.
"I hope not. Usually that
sort of creature is left to Alucard and Seras. That's why they're
always out on the forefront. We human troops are usually the back
up and more oft than not the clean up. Course I wouldn't go
worrying about anything til we know what we're dealing with. Look
I've got some time before going on patrol with my unit. Why don't
we go get something to eat?"
"All right."
##################################################
Seras was just placing Mariah
in her crib after feeding her. Mariah however, wasn't ready to
call it a night just yet. It was still several hours before dawn
and the tiny vampiress wanted to play, not sleep. Seras looked
down at her daughter who began to squirm and gurggle in her
little coffin bed.
"Normally you'd be ready
for a nap after you eat. Now you want to play." Seras said
as she picked her daughter up. She went over and sat in the
rocking chair hoping to lull the child into wanting to sleep. She
slowly rocked back and fourth to help Mariah relax. But the child
was intent upon staying awake.
It seemed the more she rocked
the more intent Mariah was upon not going to sleep. Seras got up
and started carrying her daughter over to her bed. As she was
about to place her in it Mariah began to cry and protest. Seras
let out a frustrated sigh realizing it was not going to be easy
to get the child to sleep.
"She's beginning to
realize we don't sleep at night." A deep voice said
smoothly.
Seras turned to find Alucard
coming through the door and walking toward her and Mariah. He
made his way to Seras's side and looked down at their daughter.
"It would appear she's
grown wise to that little fact." Seras replied.
"Yes it would. She'll
most likely start sleeping during the day exclusively soon."
Alucard said. He picked up the infant and gently cradled her in
his arms.
"Shhhh my little
princess. I know you want to play, but you're just a tiny thing
right now. You need to rest." He said soothingly. But the
child's cries persisted. His eyes flashed and he jerked his head
upward sniffing the air.
"Alucard, what is it? Is
something wrong with Mariah?" Seras asked insistently.
"We are not alone. There
is another undead in this city." Alucard answered seriously.
"Another vampire here on
the grounds?" Seras asked.
"Not on the immediate
grounds of the mansion, but close by to it. Stay here with
Mariah. If someone is daring to poke into Hellsing affairs
Integra must be informed." Alucard answered. Seras nodded in
agreement and took Mariah into her arms. The child continued to
cry as Seras tried her best to soothe the child and make her feel
safe again.
##################################################
Integra sat at her desk when
she felt her vampiric servant speak to her mentally. "We
have a potential threat master. A vampireis lurking somewhere
near the mansion. I'm going to take care of the problem."
"Silence the target.
Do not let it set foot upon these sacred grounds." Integra
ordered.
"Orders understood my
master."
