Growing Affections
May 31: Apparently Hayate was in Himeno’s bedroom last night. She gave him quite the bruise! I wonder if she would have done so if it were me?
She is certainly a unique girl. Perhaps it is possible to fall in love again? No, I cannot think that, I cannot sully her memory… the one I could not protect.
June 15: Hayate has been working as an assistant to Himeno’s father! This is insufferable. Now he gets to be around her all day! Why didn’t he say anything to us?
June 17: She is so beautiful. My heart soars when I am with her. Today Himeno and I bumped into each other downtown after I had finished taping my radio program. We had a lovely afternoon at the park eating ice cream and chatting. She really opened up to me. We sat closely together on a park bench, and she became so embarrassed when I tried to put my arm around her. What an innocent girl.
July 1: I went with Hayate and Goh to check out a suspicious presence. Himeno had a dream about a sinister darkness killing us the night before and begged us not to go. It turned out to not be a demon larva, but we were confused about what brought us there in the first place. Himeno was glad to see us returned safely and she hugged each of us in turn. I had hoped she would hold onto me for a little longer, it felt so nice to feel her slim body against mine, but she didn’t. Perhaps she is embarrassed about what the others might think? I noticed Hayate returned her embrace… when did he start to develop affection for her?
July 5: We had quite a scare today, Mannen, Hajime, and Shin were in grave danger! Himeno is distraught. She really loves those younger knights. I must try my best to calm her.
July 6: Fenrir has turned her attention to Himeno. We had to tell her the story of who she is. I neglected to include my side of it, and let Hayate tell most of the story. Mannen, Hajime and Shin were also told why they are so much younger than the rest of us. It is such a sad story.
Is it my paranoia, or is Hayate staring at Himeno? Even now as I write this a smile is appearing on his face. I wonder what he is thinking.
July 7: Today we were forced to fight a great battle. Himeno became the Pretear of Wind in order to combat the threat of the demons. Why did she ask for Hayate to prêt with her?
When it was over Hayate emerged from her quite injured. We had to carry him back to Himeno’s mansion, where we tried make a secure a location as possible. Himeno was whispering something to Hayate and holding his hand, I wondered what she was saying so I decided to go over and find out.
“Do not worry, Himeno,” I said, “this is part of our responsibility. Besides, we knights heal quickly.”
She just looked up at me with tears in her eyes. It broke my heart to see her so upset. Undoubtedly she blamed herself for what happened to Hayate.
“Come.” I took her hand. “Hayate needs rest now. Kei and Mannen will take first watch to make sure nothing happens. Right Kei?” Kei nodded and picked up a magazine to look at.
“Why do I have to do it with Kei, Sasame? I can watch over Hayate all by myself! You’ll see,” Mannen whined.
Good, that made Himeno smile. I put my arm around her and walked her towards her room.
“I’m so glad you are here, Sasame. I don’t know what I would do without you,” Himeno said when we reached her door, holding me in an embrace. I was speechless. I must confess all I could do was stare at her. I was startled out of my absorbed stare when she pulled away from me and went into her room.
All I managed to say was “goodnight, Himeno.” Why could I not say more? I should have at least told her how I felt about her. But wait, how do I feel about her? I am not sure… can I really let go of she whom I have loved so much for so long?
