“Raitooooooooo…”

Raito continued following his captor out of the airport, in the stead of being dragged out by the cuff that connected his left hand to the older man’s right one.

“Raitooooooooooooooooo…” Ryuk moaned again, tapping the teen on the shoulder, “I’m booooooooored.”

The Yagami boy sighed, managing to change it to a questioning tone in the midst of eliciting the sound. “Ryuuzaki? Do you suppose there will be any caramel or candy apples given out?”

Ryuk’s smile very nearly grew wider.

L put a thumb to his lips impassively, “I suppose. In fact, it is quite likely.”

“I suppose you want to hear that I understand I will be unable to eat said treats until we return to Japan and are freed from constant surveillance, yes?” Ryuk groaned.

Raito nodded silently, as the detective was ahead of him and unable to see such an action.

“Well, there, I said it. Nevertheless, thank you! Candy apples?! Now those sound interesting,” he chuckled, floating swiftly behind the young men.

“Raito~kun?”

“Huh?”

“You are aware that razorblades are often hidden in the midst of apple treats on Halloween? It would be best if you did not partake in any,” L still refused to turn and look at him, too content on moving forward.

Another agitated sigh slipped from Raito’s lips. “Yes. I am well aware of such an occurrence,” and then, just to rub Ryuuzaki the wrong way, “That’s what makes it more fun.”

“Mmmmm. Razorblades….” Ryuk licked his lips. Such dangerous things were always intriguing to the shinigami who could not be killed or injured. Raito couldn’t help but chuckle a bit at the death god’s reaction.

“Oh, dear. It appears I have driven Yagami~kun to insanity. Please forgive me, Raito~kun.”

Ryuk burst out laughing, yet again.

This caused the younger man to stop short, causing the chain to pull taught. Having been jerked quickly from his destination, Ryuuzaki turned to the teen, looking as stoic as always. “You credit yourself too much, Ryuuzaki,” Raito glared, “You don’t have it in you to make me crazy. I’d like to think it’s going in the other direction. A man who taints a children’s holiday with selfish intentions cannot be sane.”

The shinigami howled louder, “You two quarrel like a couple of newlyweds!”

“WE DO NOT!!!” Raito realized his mistake, before he actually whirled around to face Ryuk.

“We do not what, Raito~kun? I have not yet made a reply to your harsh critique of myself,” L’s eyes were wide, but both of his hands were tucked away in his pants pockets.

“What?” the teen donned a completely serious expression and gazed at Ryuuzaki with deep concern.

“You just screamed, ‘We do not’.”

“I didn’t say that.”

“Yes… you did.”

“I’m sorry, Ryuuzaki, but you are mistaken. The last words that left my mouth were ‘cannot be sane’. Though, if you’re now hearing things, I may have been more correct than I had assumed,” Raito took a casual step backwards, as though losing his balance, and stomped his foot down harshly to regain it. At least, that’s what the brilliant detective saw. In reality, the teenager had just stomped down on Ryuk’s foot.

“You do know I can’t feel that,” the shinigami could almost feel Raito’s glare, though the boy dared not actually do so.

Ryuuzaki turned suddenly, jerking the chain and walking swiftly to make up for lost time, “Perhaps I was the accurate one. If Yagami Raito cannot remember a statement that he, himself, made, then it appears he is more unstable than I had previously feared.”

“I’m not--!”

Or there is the possibility that Yagami~kun is speaking to someone I cannot see… perhaps… a shinigami? Thus he is acting strangely to convince me that he made no such mistake. 21%.”

“Two whole percents? Just because you’re going insane? That seems a bit unfair,” Raito crossed his arms. Unfortunately this threw off the chain and pulled him into closer proximity with the man he currently loathed most in the world, though only because death gods didn’t count as men.

“Stop wasting time, Yagami~kun. You are going to make us late for trick-or-treating, and you know perfectly well that it is limited to specific hours,” L picked up a swifter pace until they had finally reached the lobby of the airport. He quickly pulled Raito over to the main desk and asked, “Please, I need a taxi waiting outside immediately.”

“Yes, right away, sir,” the lady at the desk smiled politely.

“You’re an ugly Rem,” Raito muttered under his breath, glaring daggers into the floor in the stead of looking at his greatest enemy.

“How disheartening,” Ryuuzaki placed his thumb against his lips, “As you happen to make quite an adorable shinigami, yourself.”

Both Raito and the real death god’s heads snapped towards the stoic man. The detective merely continued looking at the lady who was just hanging up the phone. “Your taxi should be here in just a moment, sir,” she smiled politely.

“Thank you so much. We greatly appreciate this,” without another word, he turned to leave the building. Raito couldn’t help but notice the sudden shock that passed over the woman’s face as she saw their handcuffs, though she seemed to quickly decide it was just another part of their strange Halloween costumes.

“How interesting, Raito. L thinks you’re cute.”

A million comebacks shot through the Yagami boy’s mind, but he dared not mess up again. He had already once spoken to Ryuk aloud, and it had cost him two percents of suspicion. Not to mention the one rebuke that was most prominent in his head was, Ryuuzaki most certainly did not mean it like that. There’s just no way he thinks I’m…cute.

Both men stopped walking as they stepped out into the brisk air of the sunset lit parking lot of the airport. The older man still had not met the teenager’s eyes. “Are you all right, Raito~kun?” even as he spoke, L did not turn his gaze from the diminishing sun in the distance, “You have not spoken since I said you looked cute. I surely expected some snide remark. At the very least a: ‘How terrible, I appear to be handcuffed to a homosexual.’ or some such statement. Have I upset you?”

“N-no! Not at all, Ryuuzaki. I guess I just took it as a, uh, compliment. I hadn’t realized you were joking,” Raito paled a bit. The detective was correct; he normally would have said something nasty in return.

“Actually, I did mean it as a compliment. Only you often perceive things as badly as possible, and I did not believe you would accept that I would say something kind about you. Sometimes you forget that you are, indeed, my only friend.”

“R-Ryuuzaki--”

“The taxi is here. Do not delay, Raito~kun. You did promise,” L opened the door and slipped inside slowly, taking care not to yank Raito in by the cuffs. The younger man sat down and shut the door behind him. “To Central Wharf, please.” The driver took off.

Ryuk definitely was not going to fit into the backseat; that much was obvious even to the stubborn death god. He wasn’t upset though. The shinigami simply sat down in the trunk and leaned backwards through the seat until his head was resting on his arms between the humans. Missing any of this fun conversation was something he absolutely refused to do.

Raito hardly noticed the snickering shinigami. He was rather consumed by Ryuuzaki’s earlier statement. He opened his mouth, nearly said ‘L,’ and quickly closed it again. He knew better than to call him that in the open, and yet it had almost slipped from his lips. What the Hell is wrong with my mind, lately?

“You boys headed to some big costume party?” the driver asked.

“No, actually. We are going trick-or-treating,” L was not one to lie needlessly.

The man looked absolutely stunned for a moment, before laughing loudly and obnoxiously, “Whoo! You had me goin’ there for a minute. I thought you were serious! Guess the trick’s on me.”

“Please, shut up,” Raito moaned. He was still lost in his thoughts, and the driver’s horrible voice was cutting through his brain like a samurai sword.

“Raito~kun! That is no way to speak to this man. Apologize.”

Raito Yagami did not apologize, especially not to annoying unintelligent men. “I’m sorry,” he said. Unfortunately, he found that he did not want Ryuuzaki to be disappointed in him, and that fact only further upset him.

“You like him, too. Don’t you?” Ryuk’s eyes glinted.

The teenager massaged between his eyes, why wouldn’t everyone just stop talking, except maybe L. For some reason, he found himself wanting to hear the man’s voice again. No! he thought suddenly, This is getting ridiculous. I’m just letting L and Ryuk get to me. I have no feelings for that man, whatsoever. I want to kill him! I hate him! That’s all there is. I just have to go out there and finish stupid trick-or-treating, and then this will all be done with, and I can forget it ever happened. He started to feel better. It was good to know that he had just been overreacting.

“Raito~kun?”

“What?” he looked up, honestly surprised.

“Thank you for coming with me, tonight.” Ryuuzaki was staring at him, eyes wide and appreciative.

He stared back for a moment, before turning away quickly and crossing his arms, “Keh.” He was not about to let some self-centered immature man bother him.

Wow Ryuk thought to himself, I’ve never seen Raito look so distressed. This really might end up being very entertaining, after all.
