The sound of distant thunder rumbled gently across the sky as silent lightning flashed with violet radiance in the corner of his eye. He couldn’t take his eyes off Light’s stunned face. His eyes were filled with a screaming horror. A soft rain began to fall like burning ice against his naked white flesh.
“What?” Light whispered in shock for the second time as lightning flashed above. There were tears streaming from his frightened eyes. His face was a mask of anger one second and deep sorrow the next. It looked like he was trying to process the fact that he had been tricked and it simply was not computing. Of course! How could someone as brilliant as he be tricked? Well, it had been simple. It had been simple and spontaneous.
L wrapped his arms around him, pulling him ever so close. He didn’t want him to think he was being threatened in any way. The tears simply ran down his bone white cheeks as he held the trembling college student in his embrace.
“I don’t understand,” Light whispered. His voice was shaky and his iron grip was causing L to flinch in some pain. It hurt. “Why aren’t you attacking me? Why aren’t you calling the others?”
“Because,” L cooed, kissing the top of his wet head. “I love you.”
Light lifted his head, looking into his eyes. They were filled with a frightened and yet stunned awe.
“You could deny everything,” L said, knowing he had no physical proof to show the others. “You could tell them I simply lured you out here and raped you if you wish.”
Light’s eyes widened.
“You could make it very convincing, too,” he said, smiling sadly. He really was crazy. “We can beat the shit out of each other right now if you want.”
His head suddenly snapped to the side and the slap echoed all around. Light had just slapped the hell out of him. It actually stunned him. He had been punched, kicked, hit with blunt objects, threatened to be stabbed, but never had he ever been slapped across the face.
“I’m a killer!” Light snarled with a seething rage right in his face. “If I was raped, I allowed it.”
L put a hand to his stinging cheek, knowing it was going to be purple later. Oh, well. It might look good on him. Purple was such a yummy color.
“Is that a confession?” He asked with a big shit-eating grin.
Light gripped him by the shoulders, giving him a good shaking. His eyes were rolling around in his head. “Does it really fucking matter now, L?”
“Why?” He asked, breaking away from him, causing him to get scratched in the process. “Why did you do it?”
“Because I could!” Light screamed, getting to his feet. “It wasn’t because I wanted to! It wasn’t because it was fun! It was because I could! It’s because I still can!”
“But,” L said, rising with him. “It’s wrong, Light.”
“Who says? You?” Light laughed, turning his back to him. “What gives you the right to judge me?”
“Ha!” L laughed right back. “What gives you the right to judge them?”
He froze when Light slowly spun around with the fluid grace of a dancer on ice. He looked like a statue carved of warm gold. His eyes reflected a frozen wasteland.
“Their actions,” Light smiled and it was frigid. “And because I have the power to do so.”
L was forced to look away. He couldn’t look at him. His words were so twisted…and he liked the way they sounded. It went against everything he was brought up to believe in with his whole heart. Was love truly this blind? Could he blind himself to Light’s actions? Oh, it was so tempting.
“All of them were killers, rapists, and monsters,” Light hissed, advancing on him like an avalanche. “Yeah, sure, a few innocents got in the way. But, hey, casualties of war. If you want to live, go where God can’t see you.”
L blinked. “Innocents, Light?”
“There were only two,” he said, throwing his hands up in the air. “They should have just stayed in bed.”
“Penber,” L whispered. “Misara…”
Light nodded. “When people stand in the face of God, they die, L.”
“Listen to yourself,” L said, letting Light hold him. “You’re not God.”
“I know,” Light said, caressing his back. “I’m the real thing.”
L trembled in his arms. He was losing him and it hurt like hell. Maybe he had gone about this the wrong way?
“You love me,” Light said. “Even after all this?”
L nodded. “Yes…”
“Well,” Light said, letting him go. “What are you going to do now that I’m Kira?”
“Keep you,” L replied without even thinking about it.
“Huh?” Light asked, blinking.
“The 13 days,” he said. “It’s a lie.”
Light nodded. “I thought I was being clever, but you’re obviously smarter than you eat.”
L let that comment slide. His eating habits were just fine and dandy. He decided to let Light think he saw through it.
“Well?” Light asked. “What are you going to do with me?”
“Aren’t you going to kill me?” L asked.
“No,” Light said. “I don’t fuck corpses…but then again, I’ve never tried.”
L wanted to laugh, but he couldn’t do so. “You will have to stop, Light.”
“I’m not the one killing,” he grinned.
L’s eyes widened. “Misa…”
“She has the eyes and she’s under Rem’s protection,” Light immediately told him. “If you threaten her, Rem will kill you, and anybody else who threatens her. You can’t hide your name or face from a God of Death.”
L was shocked. Well, not really. The girl was too stupid to survive on her own. That was for Goddamn sure.
“So, Rem will simply kill anyone who threatens, Misa,” L said, making sure he had it right.
Light nodded his head. “Can we go in now? I’m freezing.”
L couldn’t believe it. That skinny little blond shit was untouchable.
“Wait,” L snapped. “How come Rem didn’t kill us all before when we had Misa tied up and blindfolded?”
Light chuckled. “I wouldn’t let her.”
L blinked.
“It was all a part to get you off my ass, L,” he said, looking up at the sky. “But, it only worked to get you in my ass.”
“Huh?” L asked, knowing he sounded like an idiot. He was an idiot in love.
“It was this long drawn out plan that is too complex and mind fucking to explain in grand detail at the moment,” he said, sounding angry. “I’m going in now.”
“No,” L said, jumping in front of him. “You have to tell Misa to stop.”
“Actually, I need to go tell Rem not to kill you,” he said, pushing him towards the door. “Otherwise, I’ll be sleeping with your bones.”
“I said no!” L yelled, pushing him down, standing over the fallen teen.
Light looked up at him with startled eyes. “Are you going to lock me up? Are you going to hand me over to die for ridding the world of monsters?”
L was breathing heavily. He was so angry. Light was just a child. He had been an innocent. These Death God’s were evil. They were running around, corrupting people with divine powers. He was being used and they were being entertained. They didn’t care about him. Light was just a TV set to them.
“Where is your Death God?” He asked Light. “Where is the one who kills for you?”
Light looked down at his lap. “Mine has yet to fall in love with me?”
“Love?” L asked. “These things love?”
“Be respectful,” Light warned. “They are Gods.”
“Why are you telling me all this?” L asked, feeling suspicion creeping in. Was he still planning on killing him?
“Because,” Light said, rising to his feet. “I want you to live.”
“You do?” L asked.
Light nodded, holding out his hand for him to take. “I…love you, L.”
L looked at him. He knew he meant it. He didn’t know how. He just did.
He reached out, putting his snowy white hand in Light’s slightly bigger one. He blinked when Light suddenly sniffed and then sneezed.
“Ugh,” he moaned, rubbing his nose with his free hand.
“Come on,” L said. “I’ll ask Watari to fix you some soup and I’ll run you a hot bath.”
“Oh,” Light said, letting him lead. “How about you join me?”
L didn’t answer him. His mind was racing. What the hell was he going to do? He couldn’t turn Light over to the authorities. He loved him. Plus, Misa would kill him. She was such a bitch.
He was in a bind. Turn Light in, Misa kills. Don’t turn Light in, Misa kills for fucking ‘her’ man. That little bitch troll from hell was such a raging slut cow. He wanted to tie her hair into knots and then brush them all out, making her cry like five year old.
“Um, L,” Light asked, poking him on the shoulder. “You don’t laugh like that.”
“Huh?’ L asked, turning to look at him with big eyes.
“Uh, nothing,” Light said, looking away. “I just want you to take that bath with me.”
The door slammed shut and L had Light pressed up against the wall. “I’m not going to turn you in,” he said, pressing him up farther. “You’re going to tell Misa to stop killing, and you’re going to give me her Death Note also.”
“What about Misa?” Light gasped.
“She has Rem,” he said. “I have you.”
“But…”
L just kissed him. He didn’t want to think right now. He just wanted to be happy, Goddamn it! Was that asking for too much?
Light broke the kiss. “The Death Gods will be stuck here until she and I die…”
“Is that a problem?” L asked, cutting him off. “They’re immortal. What’s seventy-eight years to them?”
“They get bored, L.”
“Well,” L told him, picking up his soaking wet shirt off the ground, slipping it on over his head. “What can we do to keep them from getting bored?”
“Apples.”
L just looked at him. “Huh?”
