“What’s wrong Usagi? You seem more sad than usual.” Ami frowned in worry as the two of them sat eating lunch together the next day.
“What?” Usagi looked up from her barely touched food. “Oh, nothing, I’m fine.”
Ami’s phrasing, ‘more sad than usual’, stung her. She tried to be brave for her friends, tried to be happy as she had promised Mamo-chan. It hurt to know that she was failing.
“Are you sure? Is there something you’d like to talk about?” Ami’s concern for her friend warred with her dislike of being nosy. The Usagi she knew never needed prompting when it came to sharing her problems, at the least the Usagi she used to know.
“No, I’m fine.” Usagi knew she could confide in Ami, in any of her friends. But her discovery unsettled her, and she didn’t know how they would react. Her friends had been fiercely loyal to the prince of the Earth.
“Well, you know if you need anything that I’m here for you, Usagi.” Ami reached across the table and put her hand on her friend’s shoulder. “We all are.”
Usagi nodded, only keeping her tears from spilling down her cheeks by sheer force of will. The girls paid their check, collected their things and went their separate ways: Usagi to her job in an office building several blocks away and Ami back to the University for her afternoon classes.
The inner scouts made sure that one of them met Usagi for lunch at least three or four times a week. It seemed to keep her from slipping into her darker states quite so often when they spent more time with her. Haruka and Michiru took turns as well, but often eschewed lunch duties for spending whole days with their princess on weekends.
They were all busy. Ami and Rei were enrolled in the University. Ami was studying biology and volunteering at her mother’s hospital. Rei was studying business, and was only allowed to attend University because of a tenuous compromise with her grandfather involving her duties at the temple. Makoto split her time between her job at Bleu, a popular downtown restaurant, and taking classes at the culinary institute. Haruka was racing and Michiru performing with the national orchestra; and they both had their hands full with little Hotaru. But they all made time to be with their princess. She needed them, even if she wouldn’t bring herself to ask for their help.
Still, it was Minako who spent the most time with Usagi. Her career as an idol was slowly gathering momentum, and she could have been much busier if she didn’t take so much time off to be with Usagi. But Minako knew that her time would come, and her friend was more important, always had been more important, than becoming an idol. It was Minako who knew best the depth of pain that still tormented her princess; she could see through the smiles and laughter, knowing they never lasted long.
So, it was Minako who Ami called as she headed back to campus.
“Hello?”
“Minako? I’m really worried about Usagi. Something’s wrong.” Minako clenched her free hand into a fist; her fingernails biting into the flesh of her palm.
“What is it? Is she hurt? Where are you?”
“No, she’s not hurt. Not physically anyway. I just came from lunch with her. Something’s changed. She was more upset than I’ve seen her in a long time, but she wouldn’t tell me what was wrong. I’m worried.” Ami bit her lip. She hated seeing her friend in pain. Her helplessness was eating her up inside. Minako sighed and rubbed her forehead.
“This can’t keep going on. Usagi is slowly killing herself. I can’t watch her hurt anymore!” Minako’s fisted hand pounded down onto the table in front of her, and she received several, ‘shh’s from the crew involved with filming the commercial she was working on.
“But, Minako, what can we do?” She could tell from her friend’s voice, that Ami was near tears.
“We do the only thing we can do at this point, though I’m not sure you’re going to like it.” Ami was a little taken aback by the sudden smile of mischief she heard from Minako.
“If it will help Usagi, I’ll do anything.”
“Call Rei. I’ll call Makoto. It’s time for a slumber party.”
