Tranquility never made it too school, enjoying the morning and afternoon sun. When did everything stop being important to her? She had never really liked school, but because she had been an orphan, the nuns had forced her to go. It was necessary if she wanted to survive in the competitive world.
She had so many questions, and so few answers. If Sesshomaru was from the past, why didn't she feel him here? Was there truly a multi-billionaire with his name? Did he die? The last thought terrified her. Tranquility didn't understand the desire to protect the Western Lord, knowing he was fully capable of handling himself. He was powerful, a law of his own.
His very aura demanded attention and respect, and if he wanted something, he couldn't imagine not having it. Finding an isolated park, Tranquility sat beneath a tree and fell asleep, bathing in the warm sun. Her auburn hair flew around her body, lifted by the wind.
She was unaware of the shadow that fell over her, or the strong arms that easily lifted her off the ground and carried her away. Sesshomaru watched as she slept, not wanting to wake her. He had waited patiently enough, but he had no choice but to return to his time, and to ensure that Rin was still safe. Jaken could watch her, but even he was no match against the wolf demons that would kill him or the child.
After he had left Artemis and Serenity, he had been deep in thought. Sesshomaru had thought of giving her more time, but he couldn't risk that he would run into his future self. A part of him knew that he should leave her here, but he couldn't wait another five hundred years.
Tranquility no longer wanted to attend this school of hers; she was simply to use to the routine schedule of her life. Sesshomaru smirked; he was about to turn her world upside down. Tranquility would be to occupied to focus on her past, or the loneliness she had felt growing up as a child among the humans. Rin wanted a mother, and he had no problems with letting Tranquility fill that role.
He already knew that Tranquility would love the child, and Sesshomaru couldn't find it in himself to part with the human brat. Somehow she had grown on him. Sesshomaru sensed her loneliness and vulnerability. She was slowly starting to believe that he would stay in her life, but a small part of her would always feel that she will be left alone in the end.
Sesshomaru had every intention of surrounding her mind and heart with his presence. Even if he had to keep her glued to his side for the next several years, he would rid her of this stupid notion. Tranquility was a fighter, he could feel it in the muscles of her arms and legs as he carried her towards the wooden well.
Despite her compassionate nature, humanity had left its mark on her. They hated what they couldn't understand, yet she still chose to protect them. Sesshomaru wanted to keep her locked away from their influence, but even he knew that would slowly kill what spark of laughter she had left.
Yes, he would take her from this world. Sesshomaru, in his own home and with more time, would be able to give her all the attention she desired and more. Tranquility would no longer desire what she had never known. It would be hers without a second thought for himself. Sesshomaru began to wonder if it was such a good idea for her to remember the past?
It had been brutal to them both, and she could finally be happy. Her last moments could possibly destroy her, and Sesshomaru would not allow such a thing. She had no need to remember, especially when he was incapable of changing or fixing the damage the humans had done.
Sesshomaru knew with a doubt that Artemis would follow with Serenity. He also had a strong feeling that Rei would as well, unable to separate herself from her best friend. The fire senshi had always been extremely loyal. It just surprised him that it was towards the older sister more than the younger one.
Tranquility needed to know her sister, and he would not deny her. Moving to the well, he looked at her peaceful face, making the decision for her. Other demons would accept what the humans could not. Artemis was about to shake things up in Serenity's group of protectors, and doubt he would give them a say in his decision.
InuYasha hovered at the door, not liking the color of Rei's skin. She had turned an ashen gray, sweat soaking her clothes. Kagome didn't know what to do. "She smell different," he growled.
"What are you talking about?"
"I'm not sure, but I think we should take her to Kaede."
"Shouldn't we let the modern doctors help her?"
The door crashed open, throwing InuYasha towards the other side of the room. He came up, holding Tetsaiga in his hands. A blond slid off a large panther's back, running towards her friend. "Rei, what's wrong?"
"Tran..." she whimpered, thrashing in her sleep. Even unconscious, she couldn't stop thinking of her best friend, wanting to keep her safe.
"Artemis?"
"Dammit," InuYasha roared. "She's dying! Kaede is the only one close enough to help her."
"He's right," Artemis growled. There isn't a doctor for at least twenty miles."
"Tran... She can help..." Rei desperately wanted to be with her best friend. If she was going to die, it would be with her.
"Artemis," Usagi begged. "Please help her."
The panther leapt onto the bed, waiting for Kagome and Usagi to place the dying girl onto his back. He didn't know if he could save her, but Artemis would never give up trying. His emerald gaze fell on the girl he had sworn to protect, "I'm not leaving you behind."
She hesitated, but only for a moment. Pushing aside her fear, she approached her guardian and climbed up behind Rei. She was surprised to see golden stripes on his fur, amazed at the satin feel. "Is Luna like you?"
"No. She is a cat of Mau. I only took their form to become your guardian during the Silver Millennium. It didn't matter. Queen Selinity never listened to a word I told her anyway."
"Are you a youma?"
Artemis snarled at the insult, but had to remind himself that he had never discussed his origins to her. "What does your instincts tell you?"
"Youmas have a negative energy, something that Sesshomaru and yourself lack."
"We are youkai, the hanyou over their half-human. I'm surprised Inutashio would mate with a human."
"Usagi, this must be your choice. I will not return here."
"But..."
"Your fate was never my decision and I will no longer call you by a human name. You are Serenity, Princess of Lunaria. As long as I have the ability to change your destiny, I will do so. Join me, Serenity, and I swear that you will laugh and smile again. I will allow you to become the normal girl you long to be."
"The other senshi!"
"The senshi are protected by Endymion and other guardians I have not mentioned. Do you not wish to meet your older sister?"
A memory suddenly came to her, one that she thought forgotten. A girl of four was holding her baby sister, watching the couple that would take her away. They had not wanted Tranquility, but she wanted Serenity to be loved and safe. Pulling away, she gave Serenity a sad smile. "My little Sere, you must go. They'll give you a good home, better than here. You deserve to be happy and loved."
Tran stepped back, trying not to cry. "Promise that you'll forget. I don't want to see you sad. It's better this way."
"Big sis, big sis! Why won't you come with? I don't want to be without you!"
Tran shrugged, as if it mattered nothing at all. "I wasn't wanted, little Sere." Around her neck, Tran gave her sister a red star, warm against her pale skin. "It will keep you safe at night. If you find that your sad or frightened, just hold it in your hands and close your eyes."
Serenity hugged her sister, later taken by the young couple that had adopted and changed her name. Tears streamed down her face and she looked at the red necklace still around her neck. She had forgotten her sister. "Tran..."
Artemis saw the decision clearly in her blue eyes, already moving towards the well. She was becoming the Lunarian she had once been. In two strides, he was traveling through the blue light, landing on all four feet. Kagome and InuYasha were close behind. "Stay with them, Serenity. I can travel faster with Rei alone."
"Do you think my sister can help her?"
"Actually, it will be Sesshomaru. He has the sword that can bring her back to life. I don't think we can save her."
Serenity slid off his back, watching Artemis disappear. "Be careful," she whispered.
"Kagome, InuYasha," a monk greeted them. "You're back." Miroku was the first to notice Serenity and gaped. She was beautiful. "Who's she?"
"Miroku, Sango; I'd like you to meet Serenity. She's from the future, and it's a long story. I don't even know where to begin."
"Is Sesshomaru still in your time?" Sango asked, worry in her dark eyes.
"No. I think he took my friend and returned a few hours ago. Apparently my cousin has a group of friends that are unique to our time. A demon panther is trying to find Sesshomaru, hoping to save my cousin's life."
Serenity traveled around the small hut, curious about its simplicity. "Where are we?"
Miroku took the girl's hand, giving her a warm smile. "Don't allow all of this to frighten you child. You are in Feudal Japan."
"Miroku, don't even think about it!" Sango shouted, grabbing Miroku by the ear. "Serenity, you need to watch him. He has a bad habit of asking a girl to marry him and can't seem to keep his hands to himself."
Serenity blushed, but couldn't help but smile. A little blur jumped into Kagome's arms, asking her a thousand questions. "I thought you weren't coming back," he whined, tears in his large eyes.
"Shippo, you're being silly. Of course I'll come back, at least until the well closes completely."
"Do we go after your friend, Kagome?"
"I think we should wait for Artemis to return," Kagome sighed, no longer sure of anything. "In the mean time, let's continue searching for the jewel shards."
An old woman joined them, staring at Serenity with curiosity. "Child, you are a powerful demon with Miko powers. How can this be?"
Everyone stared at the blond in shock, their mouths hanging open. InuYasha snorted. He had already known that she was different, but Kaede had brought up a nagging question. Kagome was like this girl and Rei. Was she too a demon? He decided to wait and see what happened? It would make his day to see the expression on his brother's face if Kagome were a demon instead of human.
Serenity smiled and bowed, allowing her gold, crescent moon to show itself. There were a few gasps of awe and fear, but Shippo was the first to approach and touch the mark. "Are you like Sesshomaru?" He asked. "You don't smell like a dog demon."
She laughed, picking up the small demon child. "You're cute, but no. I am half Lunarian and half Solarian."
"They vanished nearly five hundred years ago," InuYasha whispered in awe. "Weren't they all slaughtered?"
"Hai. My mother, the only survivor, made a wish and had everyone sent to the future. She had hoped that we would have normal and peaceful lives. I was reborn along with my older sister Tranquility. I was adopted at three and until yesterday, had forgotten about her."
"Solarians are said to be extremely powerful. Can you fight like them?"
"I'm more like the Lunarians. I hate to fight and would rather spare my enemy than kill them."
"What is the Panther?" Kagome asked her. "I've never seen a demon like him."
"I think he's like my sister, but a full Solarian."
"He must have been the one Tranquility spoke about. She mentioned seeing him in a dream."
They continued to talk throughout the night, waiting until morning before they decided to search for the jewel shards. Serenity prayed that Artemis would find help for Rei.
She was covered in thick furs, safe and warm. Where was she? Tranquility remembered falling asleep in the park, but now she was in a large chamber with a four post bed and red and blue rugs on the floor. Sitting up, she blushed, bringing the blankets back up. "Where are my clothes?" she growled.
On the other side of the bed, she noticed a purple and black kimono, the colors matching her eyes. Her school uniform was nowhere to be found and with a sigh of frustration she dressed in the silky clothes. With a purple sash, she tied back her hair before she stepped into a giant hallway.
"This place is huge." There wasn't a person in sight, Tranquility exploring the castle. She saw hundreds of tapestries upon the walls, all of them of Sesshomaru or another figure that had a strong resemblance to the Western Lord. Tranquility felt a connection to the tall demon lord, touching his strong facial features. He had been like a father to her.
"Inutashio..."
A gasp and the sound of cloth hitting the floor, captured Tranquility's attention. She turned, seeing a small woman standing close, her features almost perfect. She's beautiful. Tranquility felt insecure around the other female, already walking in another direction. The woman grabbed her arm, a whimper of fear escaping her throat.
"My lady, you mustn't wander. Lord Sesshomaru will be most upset if you were hurt or captured. He has many enemies."
Tranquility laughed. She had been alone almost her entire life, that she couldn't comprehend being afraid. She was a fighter, and couldn't rely on someone to be there if she were attacked. "If your Lord Sesshomaru had wanted me to stay put, he should have not given me the opportunity to leave." The woman hissed in terror, jerking back as if Tranquility would be struck down at any moment.
"Why do you fear Sesshomaru?"
"Everyone except for Rin fear Lord Sesshomaru."
"Who is Rin?"
"She is a human child. He refuses to give her up."
"A human?" Sesshomaru was becoming more and more of a mystery. He claimed to hate humans, yet he had chosen to protect one. Again the female tried to stop Tranquility from exploring further.
"Please, Lord Sesshomaru will be extremely angry."
"Will he hurt you?" There was a hint of anger in her voice, a purple light building around her slim form. The girl backed away, afraid of the strange girl.
"What are you?"
"Answer my question?" Tranquility demanded. "Why do you fear Sesshomaru? Will he harm you?"
"He's killed thousands, especially those that dare to question his commands."
Tranquility trembled in suppressed fury. Slowly she calmed, ready to cross that bridge if and when it occurred. True, Sesshomaru was demanding and aggressive, but Tranquility truly believed he would not kill without reason. Perhaps it was his reputation that kept people from stepping over the lines he had drawn.
She refused to allow fear to control her and shook off the woman's hand. Sesshomaru didn't want her a prisoner, nor did he want her to fear him. Taking a deep breath, she followed the hallways until she stepped into a large garden, thousands of roses assaulting her senses at once.
"It's just like my dream." For the first time, she was truly happy, feeling at home in this new and strange place. Petals fell in her hair, and the clouds slowly passed over head. Who needed school or the pressure of the future? Sesshomaru cared for none of these things.
With a cry of happiness, she began to spin and dance, gliding through the beautiful garden. Her feet were bare, feeling the soft silk of the petals. This is where she wanted to be.
Sesshomaru had left Tranquility in the west wing, safe in his bed of furs. Her clothes had been replaced, knowing the unwanted attention her school uniform would bring. He thought of waiting until morning to ask her to change, but Tranquility would more than likely resist the change and Sesshomaru had no desire to battle her over such a matter.
She did have a room that use to connect to his own, but he had long ago given it to Rin. No, she would remain where he can protect her. She slept deeply, unaware of him removing her school uniform and tearing it to shreds. Taking the blankets, he covered her body. Tranquility was attractive, but Sesshomaru decided to wait until she had made her first transformation.
Jaken had returned to the castle a week ago, knowing Sesshomaru would return for them eventually. Sesshomaru ordered that the servants watch Tranquility, but he refused to stay away for long. Only he would be adequate in keeping her from harm. He quickly traveled through the halls, finding Rin playing in the library.
Rin was so happy to see him, she threw her arms around his leg, ignoring his growl of protest. Sesshomaru hid his smile. Rin would never fear him and he had learned to quit trying. "Lord Sesshomaru! Are you safe? I thought the wolf demons took you away. They came near our camp several times."
Sesshomaru growled. Koga knew better than to allow his wolves near Rin. "Did they harm you?"
"No, Koga was near and he ordered them to leave us alone."
"Rin, I have a surprise, but you are to be on your best behavior."
"Really, for me?"
"I will introduce you to her later."
"Can I play with Jaken until then?" She asked.
"What?" The demon protested in outrage. Why should he cater to the human child?
Sesshomaru shook his head. "I have another playmate, and for now I want you to eat and dress more appropriately. As for Jaken, I wish for you to deliver a message to the Eastern Lord. Tell him to come to my castle."
Rin was bubbling with excitement. "Will I like my new playmate, Lord Sesshomaru?"
"Hai." After he had assured that Rin was taken care of, Sesshomaru went to wake Tranquility. The stars were still out and he was positive she'd be in her rooms. Seeing the empty bed, Sesshomaru howled in rage, already tearing down the halls searching for her.
Servants scattered in terror, watching the demon lord race by through the castle hallways. Her scent led him to the gardens, and he found her, buried in a sea of petals. She was laughing, swatting at the flower petals raining down on her.
Sesshomaru approached, parting the falling petals with his large form. She saw him at the last moment, too late to escape his pounce. Tranquility didn't run or scream. Instead she giggled, giving him a true smile and circle of flowers around his neck.
"They said I should be afraid of your anger," she teased, stroking his muzzle. "I doubt seriously you would harm me." Sesshomaru snarled, offended that she not fear him as she should. Tranquility only laughed. "You can't be the big bad wolf and my protector as well, Sesshomaru." He nipped her neck in outrage. Sesshomaru was nowhere like the wolf demons.
Quicker than lightning, she was on his back, Sesshomaru racing through the Western Lands, the moon and stars as their guide. He knew every inch of his realm, and with a leap, he dislodged Tranquility from his back and watched her fly into a wide creek.
Tranquility squealed in protest, throwing a wave of water in his face. The water was cold, especially in the winter months. Sesshomaru growled, lunging in after the little minx, but found her already gone. What was she doing? A burst of laughter was his only warning, Tranquility knocking him over. It was hilarious to watch the large dog demon trying to pick himself back up, but his coat was heavy with water and held him down.
Again she dodged his attempt to capture her, swimming around in the water like a fish. The sight was strange to him, a trait she must have picked up from the modern era. Kagome was capable of swimming in water as well, not controlled by the fears and superstitions of his world.
Tranquility's speed and stealth were incredible, a reminder of what she had been and could yet become again. Never! His youkai snarled in protest. It wouldn't allow her to be taken again. As far as the Western Lord was concern, he would fight her enemies, keeping her from harm's way.
With a surge of strength, Sesshomaru twisted his body and pinned her in the shallow water, his paws on her arms. She was trapped, her hair fanning out in the water. Tranquility laughed, trying to squirm away from his tongue and sharp teeth. "This is hardly fair, Sesshomaru!"
His sharp teeth grazed her neck, a warning. Tranquility had yet to show signs of fear or submission. She was always giving him new surprises. In the past it was one constant battle after another. This side was strange, but not unwelcomed. Other than the lack of attention and love, Tranquility's life had been relatively calm compared to the one that had taken her.
Sesshomaru paused. She had been like this in the past, but he had forgotten. It was before their parents forced them to marry. Tranquility loved to laugh and play, a contrast to the warrior everyone respected and feared. She was too trusting, a lot like Rin.
Perhaps that is why he had chosen to keep the orphaned child. 500 years ago, he had lost the ability to feel compassion or to forgive. Tranquility shivered, cold from the water and the wind. In her dreams, she had seen this form, but he was much bigger in reality and his fur was so soft; even if he did smell like a wet dog.
His ears flattened, hearing her last thought. She had been getting better about blocking him out, but had purposely allowed him to catch this one. Tranquility knew she should have been afraid of Sesshomaru, but he had come when she had needed someone the most.
Did it matter that Sesshomaru wasn't human, that he claimed the same about her? She tried to move, but Sesshomaru had already settled on top of her, content at keeping her squirming.
Unable to control himself, Sesshomaru bit down on her shoulder, drawing a yelp of pain and blood. It trickled down her shoulder as he licked it away, purring softly as she growled in protest. He had left his mark. "You're impossible, Sesshomaru! I am not a child!"
With little effort, Sesshomaru shifted forms, still keeping her beneath him. He wrapped a strand of long hair around his wrists, his teeth pulled back. Tranquility knew he would nip at her bared shoulder again. "I agree. You're a rebellious female that knows no fear for her own safety."
"I will not be locked away like some kind of criminal, Sesshomaru. It would kill me."
"You're under my protection," he growled, as if his response answered her protest.
"Sesshomaru, I need my freedom. Please, don't take it away."
The Western Lord couldn't believe he was giving in to her so easily. If she had tried to battle him in a fight or with words, he would have been more able to deal with it. Tranquility, instead, was sadly asking him to allow her the freedom she wanted.
With a sigh, he lifted her off the ground and headed home. He would finish this discussion after they were both in dry clothes and warm. Half way towards the castle, a body dropped in front of them, his eyes snapping in unrestrained rage. Tranquility thought him very young, but his fury was very real and directed towards Sesshomaru.
He crouched, baring his fangs for the kill. "Sesshomaru, you insult us by daring to mate with a mortal! Have you forgotten?" Koga roared.
Sesshomaru had always avoided a fight with the wolf demon, mainly out of respect for Tranquility. However, this was beyond stupidity. Koga dared to question his motives? "Do you not chase after that Miko?"
"It annoys the half-breed! I would never claim that girl for a mate!"
Tranquility struggled to get free, but Sesshomaru simply gripped her tighter. She was furious, prepared to challenge Koga. He was amused by her willingness to protect him, but Koga would kill her before he realized who she was. "Stop," he warned softly.
She sighed, knowing it was pointless to argue. Tranquility had wanted to be protected, but this was insane! "Tread carefully, Koga. Know what you attack before you strike. You, better than anyone, know I would never choose a human."
Koga slowly relaxed, his eyes not leaving Tranquility. It was her eyes that triggered the memory, followed by her familiar scent. "Tran..." Gradually, Sesshomaru allowed her to touch the ground, not quite releasing her until he was positive Koga wouldn't attack.
Her eyes widened. She knew this demon, not only from her dreams but deep within her soul. They had been inseparable as children, always close after a battle that had nearly killed them both. She looked at his right shoulder and gasped. It was him! The scar was proof. "Koga."
The wolf demon took a step closer, his entire body shaking. At first sight, he had mistaken her as a human female. His nose was telling him otherwise. Their gazes connected and for a long time, neither said anything. A deadly battled flashed in both their minds, followed by blood and pain. It lasted for hours, interrupted by a dragon that had forced them to make a truce and kill the creature together.
Their two races had been enemies for centuries, but was ignored as the two formed an unbreakable friendship. As a result, she was permitted to visit the Eastern Lands on Earth. That was a different age, when he had been a prince and this girl's guardian. "You're her, but where is your birth mark?"
Reluctantly, Sesshomaru released her. He had no doubt of her loyalty to him, and the mark would discourage any demon that wished to claim her. Tranquility took a hesitant step closer, her hands shaking. She had been ten during that battle, the same age she had been when she had saved Kagome from a group of gang members.
It confused her. How could she have lived two different lives? Tranquility didn't bother trying to understand. Nothing else made much sense to her at the moment. All she needed to know was that Koga had been her closest friend for years and with a cry she went to him.
It felt right and like she had finally come home. Koga, unable to speak or function, he could only hold her. This was a dream, wasn't it? How could Tranquility possibly be here? They had seen her lifeless body. He sniffed, realizing she had yet to make the change, his gaze flying towards Sesshomaru.
Koga struggled to understand, but even the demon lord was having a difficult time coping with the situation. She was their Tranquility, but she was different. Until she gained the powers of her youkai form, Tranquility was vulnerable. With a sigh of regret, he pulled back, stroking her face before he gave her back. "You should do as Sesshomaru asks. I will return soon."
She was not the Tranquility he had known. Could she still hold her own in a battle? He didn't want to find out, and for once the two demon lords were in agreement. They would do everything in their power to keep her from harm and trouble.
Tranquility was exhausted by the time Sesshomaru placed her in bed. She had finally found the third person in her dreams and Tranquility couldn't have been happier. He started to leave, but was halted by a pair of arms wrapping around his chest. "Will you leave me alone?" she asked, a tremble in her voice.
"You will not come to harm here." Sesshomaru needed to check on Rin before he slept, but her grip only tightened. He needed to be firm with her, but Sesshomaru found it impossible to deny her wish for him to stay. Even in the past, they had never shared the same bed for more than a few hours. The other rooms had been hers, but it seemed she would only sleep if he were near.
Sesshomaru found himself dreaming of the past, returning to find her room empty and the sheets stained with blood. She was dead before he had a chance to find her and the humans laughed at his grief. Not one had survived, nor the villages that they came from. No, she would continue to sleep in his bed, where he could guard her. Rin could keep Tranquility's old rooms.
Kagome was looking for a place to bathe when a pair of arms grabbed her from behind. "InuYasha!" She would have told him to sit, but Kagome had long since lost that ability. If it hadn't been for the beads of submission, Sesshomaru would have killed InuYasha. It had taken her a long time to believe that he wouldn't leave, no longer obligated to stay, but he had stubbornly remained by her side.
InuYasha tried to say it was because of her ability to sense the jewel shards, but they both knew he was lying. He hated to see Kagome hurt and had often rescued her from death. Even after she had nearly killed him, he had forgiven her. Did he love her? He never said.
The Hanyou nipped at her ear, hearing her cry of surprise. He smirked. He had used the last couple of weeks to think. Yes, Kikyo had been a part of his life, but she had also turned on him. Unlike Kagome, no spell controlled her, nor did she give InuYasha a chance to explain. Kagome accepted him as a half-demon, wanting nothing more than what he could provide. Kikyo would only have InuYasha if he were human.
InuYasha would never be able to protect Kagome if he were human, and he couldn't take the chance that he would kill her if he became a full fledged demon. He sighed, having found an inner peace that wouldn't have been possible with Kagome around.
