Chapter III: Situations
Gilbert followed Antonio looking down at the ground the entire way, breathing raggedly, once they reached the empty infirmary(normally, Tino was in) Gilbert collapsed against Antonio, heaving a dry sob. He felt terrible, but at the same time, relieved. He had gotten out his anger, but it also hurt to say the things he did to that moron Francis.
'Antonio, that f-f-ucking....he doesn't give a damn about anyone!'
Antonio held his friend, his expression a soft calm. "Don't say that," he said smoothly, gently rubbing Gilbert's back. "It's not true. People change. What he did was a very bad thing, but what is done is done, and all he can do is atone for it." He smiled gently. "As his friends we must believe in him, sí?"
Gilbert shook his head, just heaving dry sobs, wet eyes not letting out the tears. Antonio was always the calm one, the smiling one. He was the one who spoke peacefully and never hated; But he'd be damned if the Spaniard wanted Gilbert to pretend he hadn't seen that hatred filled gaze said man had gotten when he held his beloved Rovina, who was crying and felt so lost.
He would also be damned if he was going to continue pretending not to have seen that broken and blank look Feliciana had carried for weeks, the tears falling down her beautifully round cheeks at random times, in class, outside, when they hung out. It had stung so badly. They had all suffered that year.
'I-Its not awesome 'tonio....and Mateline is not going to be another one he hurts...'
Antonio placed a warm hand atop Gilbert's head. "I don't think you have much say in that decision, amigo." He tussled the pale strands. "Francis repents. And Mateline has the say in who she wants to be with. It is noble of you to want to protect her, but let her be the judge of things." He sent an encouraging smile to his friend. "She needs someone to have faith in her right now, not someone to protect her. She has a big, worrisome brother for that."
Gilbert at times wondered what kissing Antonio would do? Would he get that infectious sweet smile his friend had? Would he become sunny? Hell, would it help at all? He sat up, looking at Antonio and nodding. The other was right. Mateline needed support and strength. Still, he would at least keep a look out for her. Leaning over, Gilbert kissed Antonio's cheek. An action solely reserved for Antonio and his brother.
The Spaniard smiled and kissed both cheeks in return. "Ah~ I'm so glad you agree!" he said cheerfully. The happy man swiveled around in search of some alcohol and gauze for Gilbert's bloody hands.
Gilbert sighed and shook his head, offering a smile to is kind friend. At least Antonio didn't change. That was good, and he would make little Ronvina happy; the little tomato maid, and her little tomato-box-fairy of a sister would have Ludwig.
He found the desired products in Tino's large class cabinet and walked back, instructing Gilbert to sit so he could clean his wounds. Antonio dabbed the thin cuts with an alcohol-soaked cotton ball, blowing gently.
'Hey...'tonio....you know I love you, right?' asked Gilbert, closing his eyes and eyes drifting shut a little, feeling very tired.
Antonio laughed breezily, patting his friend on the chest so he'd lay back on the infirmary bed. "So sweet~ I love you too, Gilbert!"
'I'll kill 'im too. If he hurts you again' mumbled Gilbert, sighing and deeming it time to sleep, closing his eyes and drifting off.
Antonio's grin softened and he gently ruffled Gilbert's downy hair before wrapping the white gauze firmly around his hands. "But then," he murmured half to himself, "we'd be the bad friends duo, and that's no good."
He peeked out the doors for any sign of the school nurse and sighed when the adorable Finnish man didn't appear, returning to Gilbert's side and pouting. "Ah, my next class is with Lovicita, too..."
Gilbert mumbled something, turning over on his side, letting out a small snore and drooling. 'West...get the wurst....a-and beer...' he grinned in his sleep, a little pool of drool already appearing on the pillow. It would seem Gilbert wasn't going to wake up for a while and it would be ok got Antonio to head to class anyway.
The Spaniard grinned, standing. "Wu~rst and bee~r," he trilled softly floating out the door. He tried to sneak into his Biology class without getting caught, having flunked the previous year. Alfred was great and all, but he never missed an opportunity to point out how much Antonio sucked at science.
Rovina jumped when she spotted Antonio, and crossed her arms, puffing her cheeks. He was a little late, and he looked a trifle bit sad and relieved. Something had happened and she wanted to know, however she had to wait until after class to ask.
He dropped into the desk next to Lovina's, shooting her a bright smile before trying to seem attentive to Alfred while really not getting it at all.
Rovina rolled her eyes at her boyfriend, but wrote down her own notes, though they were a bit sloppy. She knew Antonio would be needing those in the future so she just saved herself a headache and took down everything she could for her no-good boyfriend.
Antonio subtly poked Lovina's side, questioning her about the genetic model in a hushed whisper while Alfred prattled on in the front using words that Antonio was finding hard to remember.
'Alright you guys! We're going to do some awesomely heroic stuff today! Like, fricking a project about raising a baby! Aren't you excited! Don't worry, I've picked out your partners based on compatibility and just how ugly a baby would be with you and 'x' person. Anyways, do we know ho babies are made?!' asked Alfred laughing loudly.
Antonio lifted his hand into the air: finally, something he totally, without a doubt understood!
'Go on then Ferrari! Tell me how to make a baby!' said Alfred joyfully, posing heroically. He could never get Antonio's last name right. At. All.
"Carriedo, sir! And babies come from storks!" he answered proudly, completely unaware of the odd looks and snickers he was receiving.
Rovina stood up smacking Antonio on the head with an angry blush. 'I-Idiot! Babies come from women, from the uterus. The process takes a man and a woman, the sperm of said man inside said woman. When the sperm reaches the egg it attaches itself to fertilize the egg, encrypting the DNA strands of the mother and father to create a baby, the sperm loses its tail when the egg is successfully fertilize.' she said blushing and glaring at Alfred.
'Right! Cerebro, you learn from your girl friend!' called out Alfred, not even getting Antonio's middle name correctly.
Antonio's eyes grew as wide as saucers. "Eeeeeehh?? But that's impossible, Lovi! There's no way it could fit! It's gotta be a stork!"
'S-Shut up! How do you know it doesn't fit? Mrs.Kirkland is pregnant!' cried out Rovina sitting down with a heavy flush.
'Anyways, Andrew's weirdness aside!' didn't get his first name either....'I'll call your name out and that of your partner to pick up your new 'baby-in-a-stomach' pouch! Kiku had them imported! There's an actual baby doll in these fake pregnant stomachs! I'll set the timer once we choose the mom who's going to carry it!'
Antonio muttered to himself, sure that there was no way... even though Mrs. Kirkland was pregnant... but no way....
Alfred called out various partners, Antonio and Rovina being the last. 'Hey! You guys are so compatible, that I've decided to be awesome and let you lovebirds be parents! Here's your present!' Alfred crooned happily, lifting Rovina's shirt a bit, just enough to slip the stomach on her own slightly pudgy stomach and fastened it. Once that was done, he set the timer.
'In nine months, you'll all have a baby! They'll vary in color, depending on the environment they are birthed in and how much attention you pay to them and how careful you are!' Alfred loved Kiku, having a Japanese was the best. They made the weirdest and coolest things!
Antonio looked at Lovina. "See? It doesn't even show! Madres just get big before the baby is born because they eat a lot for all their excitement!" He leaned over, laying a hand over Lovina's stomach. "See~?"
After swiftly kicking her boyfriend, Rovina wobbled out of the room, thrown off balance by the strap-on stomach she wore, none the less, being extra careful and rubbing her belly. She spotted Gilbert who was walking down the hallway, yawning and ruffling his white hair, spotting Rovina and standing still for a moment.
'....'
'....'
Gilbert burst into hysterical laughter, rolling on the ground and pointing at Rovina who was attempting to stomp off Gilbert's vital regions.
Antonio watched from the doorway, fretting and waving his arms. "Be nice, Lovi!" he cried. "You have a baby now!"
'Then you kick his ass for me!' cried out Rovina, face as red as a tomato as she clutched her stomach pouch. Gilbert was still laughing at her, and it didn't help that Antonio was being ever the pacifist.
Antonio meekly trotted out into the hall and crouched down beside Gilbert, poking him in the side. "Be nice, Gilbert."
Gilbert snorted and looked up at the other with a look that clearly stated; I will not pass this up. Standing up, Gilbert composed himself and looked at Rovina, giving a light snort.
'You both forgot to use a condom this time?'
Antonio blushed, wondering how Gilbert knew that the stork was a lie before him. "We haven't!" he said, encircling his arms around Lovina. "My Lovi's a good Catholic! We're waiting!"
'You're kidding me' muttered Gilbert, looking at them. 'Those times I caught you guys making out, you call that waiting?' asked Gilbert.
Rovina flushed and pouted angrily, puffing out her cheeks like she always did.
Antonio puffed out his cheeks. "Kissing and sex aren't the same thing~!" he insisted.
'You're fucking each other's mouth!' crooned out Gilbert laughing.
Antonio gasped. "Nuh uh! If anything, I'm making love to her mouth! It's not so crude!"
'Whatever!' screamed out Rovino blushing heavily.
He pouted, nuzzling her neck. "It's very important that he knows the difference, Lovicita~"
'I don't care about them' she mumbled blushing and sighing a little. She kissed Antonio, pouting. 'Feed me'
Gilbert rolled his eyes grinning. 'I'm a bit hungry too' he said giving Antonio his puppy eyes. Rovina stuck her tongue out and looked at Antonio.
'Feed us then! I have your baby!'
Antonio lit up and danced off down the hall to the cafeteria, fully intent on getting the healthiest and most delicious snack ever for his dearest.
And something good for Gilbert, too.
Gilbert leaned back against the hallway's wall, looking at Lovina and giving her a little grin.
'Look, I know what you're thinking and you know what, Antonio's too sweet to even try to touch me any inappropriate way.' answered Rovina softly, standing next to the boy.
'I know. I was just teasing. You guys are planning to marry?' he asked smiling at the girl.
'I-I...I really hope so' stammered out Rovina blushing even more. 'I mean....this long together. I-I can see us marrying' she answered smiling a little.
'I can see you guys too'
Antonio came running back with a tray full of delicious fruits, smiling brightly. "Lovi! I got you some tomatoes and watermelon!" He kissed her cheek and smiled at Gilbert. "And I got a bagel with cinnamon and awesome cream cheese, just for you~"
Gilbert let out a 'kesesesese' swiping the bagel and giving Antonio a peck on the cheek. Rovina kissed Antonio's lips taking her plate and nibbling on a piece of tomato. 'Thanks....what about yourself?' she asked snuggling into the Spaniard and kissing him with tomato covered lips.
He licked her lips. "I'm not hungry~" he answered. And glanced back into the classroom to see Alfred waving cheerfully, a referral slip in his hands. The boy jumped, holding the tray in one hand and Lovina's arm with the other. "Come on, we'll get in trouble, chica!"
'Ah!' Rovina stumbled after her boyfriend, waving to Gilbert who waved back. The silver haired male looked around, slowly making his way towards Francis' classroom, knocking on the door, knowing the Frenchman had an hour break at the moment. He was going to talk things out with the man. He heard Mateline's soft voice ringing down the hall, as he knocked and scrambled to hide himself.
'Feliciana, I'm just going to talk to him. I need to get our homework.' She paused knocking on the door softly. 'Yes. I will. Take care and feel better' answered the Canadian softly, hanging up her cellphone and taking out her notepad
Francis, rather busy dusting the surprisingly dirty upper shelf of his bookcase scrunched his eyebrows in concentration. "Vous pouvez entrer," he called, sneezing once.
'Hello' answered Mateline softly, walking into the classroom. She was wearing a pair of pink baggy sweat pants and a white tanktop, a matching pink sweater over it. She looked a little unwell and pale, but her smile was still the same.
'I'm sorry but...I came to ask about our homework?' she trilled softly, looking up at Francis shyly, her flaxen blonde twisted into a messy bun. Through the sliver of her sweater that revealed her tanptop, it showed that she wore no bra, though that explained the unneeded sweater.
Francis only needed one glance before leaping from the step ladder, brushing dust off of his arm. "You don't look very well," he said upon getting closer. He looked over her with a mild concern.
Francis only needed one glance before leaping from the step ladder, brushing dust off of his arm. "You don't look very well," he said upon getting closer. He looked over her with a mild concern.
'Oh...I uhm...I think I'm getting something.' she answered honestly, pushing up her thin-rimmed glasses and smiling at Francis. She felt a shiver of cold go over her and sneezed at the dust that came off her teacher.
'I'm sorry to bother' she told him uncertainly.
He tutted her apology and went to his desk to grab the box of tissues upon it. "Bother? Je ne sais pas ce mot." He smiled. "What is your question, enfant doux?"
'I just wanted to know what was for homework, Feliciana and I are not feeling our best' she answered, not having the energy to muster French into her sentence. She took a tissue gratefully, dabbing at her nose daintily, cheeks just a little red from her sneeze.
'Are there any notes I would need to take down as well?' she asked softly.
Francis turned, walking to his workbook and fetching assignments for the girls. "Non," he answered, head down as he rifled through the filed papers, "you and Feliciana will have no problems with the comprehension."
'Thank you for having such faith in us' mumbled Mateline, standing next to Francis, yawing and looking drowsy as she waited for him to find what he was looking for, her sweater slipping down a shoulder and making her shiver as she pulled it back up.
Francis handed her the papers he'd managed to find. He examined the colorless palor of her cheeks and pressed the back of his hand to her forehead. "You're warm, cher."
'I-I know' Mateline's eyes dropped at the touch and she seemed to have a hard time opening her lovely eyes and merely sighed, a shallow sound. 'I'm tired sir...' she said clutching the papers loosely.
"Mm. You're too pale. Sit," he instructed with a gentle firmness, rolling his chair toward her. "Un moment. I'll get you some water." Francis left the room, crossing the hall to a vending machine.
Mateline sat down, her eyes glassy and her breath even more shallow. She swallowed a little and closed her eyes once more, head lulling against the chair and her knees curling up to be cradled by her arms so she could hide her face and drift to a heavy and sick sleep.
Francis returned, taking in the sight of his precious student with a mixture of pity and adoration. "Mon malade cher," he murmured softly, kneeling before the chair and pressing the bottom of the bottle to her cheek. "Can you wake up?"
The cold shocked her a little and Mateline jumped, eyes scrunching with the effort to wake up and peeking one glassy eye open at her teacher.
'Oh..Francis....mm' she shifted a little but didn't move much. 'You look really handsome' she mumbled and sighed and moved to sit, taking the bottle, her drowsiness lowering her thought process and sense of embarrassment.
His eyes widened a bit at that and after a moment, he chuckled. "I agree," he said breezily, standing, "and you look very ill. Pardonnez-moi, Mateline." Francis slipped his arm under her knees and looped her left arm around his shoulders to easily manouvre her into his arms.
'Mm...I'm sorry I look terrible...' she mumbled tucking her head under his chin. 'You look so handsome...don't...don't let people see us' she said hiccuping and sneezing softly, covering her mouth in the process.
"I can't promise anything," he mumbled, watching the multitudes of students flooding the hallways to their next periods. He tucked her head beneath his chin and watched them mill about outside his door. "Just sleep. Let me worry about everything else."
'Mm...k...' she mumbled just turning into a sleeping doll against her crush, too warm from her sickness and too tired to actually feel the need to walk and just leave her teacher alone.
Francis waited patiently for the children to reach their destinations and the final bell to ring before stepping into the hallway toward the building's exit. He knew that Mateline was Feliciana's roomate, which made taking her home much easier, and in just a few moments he was in her dorm building, buzzing Feliciana's room from the ground floor for access.
There were sounds of shuffling and it seemed Feliciana was speaking to someone. The door opened revealing a too pale Italian girl and a worried looking Gilbert beside her. The silver haired male immediately removed Mateline from Francis' grasp and tucked the girl into her bed, letting Feliciana remove her roommates clothing.
Gilbert walked towards Francis looking serious. 'We need to talk' he said, smiling at Feliciana who thanked him and then thanked Francis, ushering both males out of their dorm and closed the door.
Gilbert watched the door for a second before turning to look at Francis.
'No Francis, you treat her differently. I'm telling you, look, like just now. The way you were holding her was different then what you do for other students. The way you talk to her too, and how you look at her' Gilbert saw Francis about to object and cut in. 'No, don't even try the 'She's my student' thing with me'
He huffed and tossed a lock of golden hair over his shoulder. "All of this insightfulness is uncommon for you, Gilbert. I'm not sure whether or not I like it."
'Francis, just straight out tell me. Are you attracted to her? I know you like her body sexually, that half hard-on tells me already. But do you...do you feel attracted to her on a mental level too?' asked Gilbert looking at Francis calmly.
He nearly denied the rude (and totally false!) comment and decided then to ignore it. "She is so adept to French," Francis admitted. "I cannot help but find that prowess attractive."
'What else? Is it her voice? Her attitude? I know its how she's totally a little angel right?' asked Gilbert, trying to get Francis to admit more.
Francis caught onto Gilbert's game. His lips curved into a smile. "Oui. She is precious, and so quick to blush. She has a certain expression when she is anxious that makes me want to hold her for its sweetness."
'Oh yeah? That's the kind of thing she cries out huh? With her character? That she needs someone to protect her. She needs a man to show her?' asked Gilbert, crossing his arms. Mateline liked Francis, and Francis seemed to be pretty into her, but Gilbert hoped it wasn't a shallow interest.
Francis tapped his chin in thought. "Certainly. But a beau is not a bodyguard, nor an overprotective father. She should be allowed to make mistakes and learn from them." The blond cocked his head ever so slightly to the side. "Why do you continue to press this relationship upon me? You know I am currently seeing someone."
'Because Francis, I thought I pointed it all out' Gilbert narrowed his red eyes at Francis' trousers, glowering and looking up through white lashes.
'You're cock is honest.' he said crudely, sighing. 'Whatever....continue using Seychelles as an excuse to flirt with women and break their hearts. Because, you know, flirting and leading a woman to believe you like her and then telling her you have a girlfriend is not a thing to feel guilty about. Since you wouldn't be having sex with them anyways.'
Francis frowned. "I don't flirt with Mateline." And in his mind, he sincerely believed that to be so.
'My little angel. My pretty little flower, My flower. Those are the things you call her. 'Mine' is what you use to describe her. The looks you give her that she never notices. I mean, Feliciana saw you looking at her when she was petting Igiko's stomach. Try watching yourself and how you act around her. You'll see what I mean.'
Gilbert ran a hand through his hair. 'Also....I thought you were French. A romantic creature? Men were made to protect women. Husbands and beau's as you said. They are here to protect dainty Mateline's and Feliciana's.'
Francis playfully shoved Gilbert in the shoulder, surrendering. "Then what would you have me do?"
Gilbert grinned and shoved Gilbert back. 'Either refrain from doing anything you normally do with Mateline' he made a big 'X' with his arms and shook his head no to this option. 'Or be a good and smart man and pursue Mateline, and be a good beau and protect her' he said giving a thumbs up to this.
'So...'
Francis turned, raising his nose haughtily in the air and smirking at the albino before making his departure.
"We will see."
