Strings
of a Puppet
A Child's Fear
As soon as his nephew's footsteps disappeared down the hall, Rido
closed his eyes and took several deep breaths. He had to center his
thoughts. If the boy was to remain unharmed, there were going to be
some new rules effective immediately. He would make it clear that the
boy was off limits; that any harm inflicted, intentionally or no,
would result in serious consequences.
The soft breaths of the sleeping boy were soothing; calming. Rido
couldn't resist the twitch of a grin. It may not have crossed his
mind before, but the ever growing curiosity towards the silverette
was getting hard to ignore. Without hesitation Rido's thoughts
stilled, his concentration narrowing, letting his mind brush subtly
against the sleeping child's consciousness. To infringe upon the
boy's barely guarded mind was an invasion of privacy and abuse of
power as a pureblood. Rido had to be sure no to accidentally lapse
fully into the boy's consciousness. The last thing he wanted was to
cause the boy more distress, or worse, his death.
Faint whispers of past memories and uncoordinated thoughts were
traveling across the telepathic connection, though they were too soft
to fully make out. It was faint, but Rido could distinguish several
different whispers. Their tones, albeit soft, were that of both male
and female, child and adult. It didn't matter that the hush of words
were like white noise, Rido grew even more curious. Ignoring his
better judgment, he ventured closer to that unapproachable boundary.
As he started to reach deeper into the boy's unguarded mind, Rido was
jolted from his mental invasion by several sharp knocks upon his
bedroom door. Losing his concentration, Rido opened his eyes and
glared at the person beyond the door. But behind his furious mask,
the pureblood was just short of throwing up. If he had pushed forward
instead of pulled back, he could have tripped that subconscious
barrier. If that had been the case, a psi wave would have sent the
boy's unguarded mind to go into shock. Like a bolt of lightning
striking a tree, his mind would have shattered and he would have
died; instantly. That thought left behind a bitter taste in the back
of Rido's throat, a twist of unease in his chest... Another tentative
knock sounded, followed by someone speaking.
“Oji-san,
everyone is waiting in the common room,” Kaname's voice was
soft as it traveled trough the thick obstacle, unaware of what almost
happened just beyond the bedroom door.
“I'll
be right down.” Rido's reply went unheard, for Kaname had
already headed back down the hall.
Had the dangers of his curiosity not have been so real, Rido would
have brushed it off. However, the sickly feeling he was left with
after the fact frustrated him. For some unimaginable reason, the
child he had rescued had already weaseled his way into his heart.
Dammit, and I don't even know his name, was all Rido could
think at the moment.
Rido sighed for the umpteenth time in the span of only a few hours,
which was extremely rare. Scratching the back of his neck he took a
deep breath and exited his room. He was a pureblood, being in control
was in his DNA, he shouldn't be getting distracted by a mere human.
Ascending the grand staircase, Rido hardened his expression,
appearing controlled and stern. When he entered the common room, all
eyes were on him. Standing in the center of the room, he spoke.
“I
have called this meeting in order to lay down some new rules. First
off, I have taken a child into my care and he is human. To avoid any
future mishaps, if one drop a blood from my charge happens to touch
anyone's tongue, there will be dire
consequences...” Rido's eyes were intensely scanning the room,
making eye contact with every single staff member as he continued to
speak, the hidden threat nakedly standing out for his hired staff to
let sink in...

No one objected to the pureblood's decision. Rido Kuran was the
master of the house, a mature and successful pureblood. Any who
defied him would be lucky if they lived to see another day. However,
just as Rido was curious, so was everyone else. Hushed whispers were
quickly exchanged after Rido made his announcement. A human growing
up and being raised by vampires. It was something unheard of in
modern society. Usually a human was only taken in by a pureblood to
be a bleeder or thrall. Very rarely were they made part of a
vampire's family. As strange as the situation may be, it was still
something that lit a spark of determination in every of the staff's
heart. To be able to witness such a rare interaction was a privilege
in itself - the growth and development of a human child right before
their eyes. Buzzing chatter chirped through the common room. A group
of maids giggled in excitement as they wondered when they would meet
Rido-sama's charge.
Leaving the staff to their own devices, Rido had made his way back up
to his bedchamber. It was only a moment before the sound of light
rain reached the pureblood's extra sensitive ears. Ah, when it rains,
it pours. Knowing that a storm was approaching, Rido quickly crossed
the spacious room and drew the curtains to the glass balcony doors.
As if on cue, lightning illuminated the night sky and thunder shook
the mansion's window panes, the low rumbles echoing across the
clouded heavens. The soft patter of rain drops soon became an angry
roar against the glass, mimicking an angry drum-line.
A shuffle from behind him had Rido turning from the curtain-drawn
doors to the stirring boy on the king-sized bed. The tuft of silver
hair was strewn across the boy's pale face. Surprise was replaced
with worry as Rido noticed that the stirring boy was sweating and
breathing heavily, his hair sticking to his cheeks and neck. It
didn't take a genius to know that something wasn't right.
Rido gently brushed the damp hair from the boy's face. His brows were
drawn together tightly, a look of distress etched in his young
features. Rido's worry grew as he felt the heat radiating from the
boy's head. Rido was just about to call for a maid when a flash of
lighting, followed by a sudden crack of thunder, had the boy sitting
upright. The sudden movement startled Rido, until the boy's choked
sob reached his ears. He finally took in the scene before him, his
chest tightening at the sight. The boy had drawn his knees to his
chest, his head buried in his tightly wrapped arms. Rido could see
his trembling shoulders.
Another crack of thunder had the boy's body tensing. It was then that
Rido's anxiety lessened; the pressure in his chest easing. With
slight hesitation, Rido pulled the frightened boy into his arms,
ignoring the startled gasp against his chest. The anchor he was
providing was just that; an anchor. He really hadn't put too much
thought into reaching out and embracing the boy. Something in the pit
of his stomach urged him to act; his instincts screamed for him to do
something. To give him a lifeline to hold on to. To provide a
strong sense of security and safety; anything to put the boy's fear
to rest.
Small hands seized the back of the pureblood's shirt in a desperate
grasp as trembling arms wrapped around Rido's middle. Like it was the
most natural thing in the world, Rido found himself comforting the
child. His hand moved on its own accord, running his fingers through
the silver strands, working out the occasional knots gently. Even his
lips began moving, whispering soothing words into the boy's hair.
The hands gripping the back of Rido's shirt slowly loosened, the
faint cries fading to just silent hiccups. Even as an unexpected
crack of thunder echoed around them, the boy's form was calm in the
pureblood's arms. Rido kept his body pliant as he adjusted the boy
into a better position. With his back up against the hand carved
headboard, he coaxed the languid boy's legs to straddle his waist,
his chest becoming the pillow for the boy's head. Humming, Rido
continued to run his finger through the boy's hair. Before the boy
could completely fall into a deep sleep, Rido manipulated his voice
to gather the unsuspecting child's attention. Outside, the storm had
calmed to a light shower.
“Precious
child, the storm has passed. It would be a shame to sleep the
beautiful night away,” Rido paused, his hand moving to the
child's chin and turning it upward so he could see his face.
“Open
your eyes, child.” Under the gently tone of Rido's voice was a
stern command to which was immediately obeyed. Tear-filled amethyst
eyes were revealed, locking with murky crimson. Rido willed the burn
in the back of his throat and the tingle in his veins to calm. The
ache of his fangs irked the pureblood. It was hard evidence of his
bloodlust spiking, something he could not
afford at the moment. Influencing the boy with words was not as
strong as compelling him directly.
In the dim light of the bedroom, an observer would have had a hard
time seeing. But as Rido held eye contact with the boy, one would
have seen an extraordinary phenomenon. Rido's right eye had changed.
Instead of its usual brown-red iris, it was now a sapphire blue. As
it started to glow, his left eye began to burn crimson. The
mismatched eyes held the boy's intensely.
“There
now, you need not fear me, child. I only wish to know your name and
age,” Rido smiled as he compelled the boy to answer.
“My
name is Kiryuu Zero. I'm 11 years old.”
“Ah,
an unusual name befitting for someone so unique. I am Kuran Rido, you
may address me however you want. Do you know where you are,
Zero-kun?” Rido let a smile slip into place as the boy only
shook his head, his chin still resting in the pureblood's light
grasp.
“I
have taken you into my home and under my care. I would be pleased to
have you live here. Would you stay by my side from now on, Zero-kun?”
The seemingly simple question hid the glint of something more in the
pureblood's intense gaze.
“Mn.”
Again, Zero nodded. Satisfied with the information he managed to
receive, Rido blinked and eased the compulsion to free the exhausted
boy's will. A feeling of elation simmered in Rido's heart. Patting
Zero's head, he smiled at the boy.
“My
precious Zero-kun, rest now. When you wake, a new world will await
your arrival,” As if on cue, those beautiful amethyst eyes were
once again hidden behind silver lashes, sleep swiftly taking the boy.
Effortlessly, Rido lifted Zero from his body and placed him on the
mattress, covering him with the sheets.
“Sleep
peacefully, my Zero-chan,” Rido place a kiss upon each flawless
cheek. Rising, Rido was drawn back to his vacant desk. There, the
leather bound journal waited.
It was unusual for Rido to express his feelings openly. However, he
felt the need to document the foreign feelings he was feeling. This
boy, a child, had awakened dormant emotions in his heart. A dark
longing for the boy had surfaced, and Rido was willing to explore
these new feelings. Lighting a few candles on his desk, Rido took a
seat in his leather chair. Like he had just hours before, he took up
the pen and opened the journal to the next page.

May 2010 (continued)
I had not expected to open this ancient journal for several days,
if not months. But I can not seem to shake the immense impulse to
express everything about the diamond in the rough I have
ever-so-willingly taken into my care. With a little encouragement, I
have learned his name.
Kiryuu Zero – age 11. Frightened by thunder.
So beautiful, I thought. But for a human, however, he is still a
child. Even knowing that, my hands still longed to touch him; to feel
his heated flesh beneath my fingers. There is no explanation for this
foreign feeling other than I've become attracted to this child; a
thought that does not sit all that well with me. Only time will tell
if it is attraction or curiosity, for I am very curious.
For now, I can only listen to his soft breaths. Knowing my bed may
never be lonely again puts a smile proudly upon my face. I can only
wait for my sleeping beauty to awaken on his own. I'm sure Kaname and
Senri will accept him as their Otouto. Who wouldn't want the
beautiful boy as a sibling? I will not be surprised if my entries
become more frequent. For now, I'll occupy my time preparing for the
permanent initiation of my Zero-chan.

through it! Sorry our young Kaname didn't get to see Zero! But fear
not! They will
interact in upcoming chapters!! I
would love to hear what you think! So please, because this took me
hours and hours to produce, I would appreciate it if you expressed
your thoughts (no matter what your thoughts may be) in a review.
