Chapter Three
By Arcadia Eclipse
The pain in Ivan’s skull was becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. His uncomfortable shifting and grimaces of pain must have woken his lover earlier than usual since Alfred stirred slowly and rubbed his blurry eyes before focusing them on the larger blonde lying beside him. Ivan really hated himself for worrying the young human so early in the morning over his self-imposed illness.
“Shit, Ivan, you’re sweating real bad. Do you have a fever?”
Alfred’s hand on his forehead was cool and soft to the touch, probably something that would have made Ivan eager for another bout of sex had it not been for the insane number of unanswered alerts and messages crippling the half-droid’s database at the moment and causing him to wince in pain. His disobedience in ignoring the central depot’s messages had not gone unnoticed, but now the throbbing in the base of his skull was radiating an agonizing pain throughout his entire body as if every human nerve was on fire all at the same time and ready to consume him at any moment. It was an effect that only the Master Program itself could generate, and if Ivan’s absence was now a priority with the Master Program the humanoid was, well…’fucked’, as Alfred would say. Still, these last few days spent with the beautiful teenager had made Ivan unconsciously selfish and unwilling to share Alfred with anyone else, no matter what might happen to him in punishment.
“It’s okay, Ivan. I’ll keep us safe, okay?”
Ivan shook his head but instantly regretted it considering the sudden searing pain running rampant through his half-human brain.
“No. Protection is my job.”
“Shut the fuck up. You can’t protect anyone, sick as you are. I’ll keep you safe for now, ‘kay?”
This wasn’t how it was supposed to be at all, although the irony of the situation was completely lost on Ivan’s half-mechanical brain. He was supposed to keep his lover safe, not the other way around! Being nothing more than flesh and blood in composition Alfred was naturally limited by his humanity, and even worse was the handicap that his impending blindness created.
Squeezing his eyes shut tightly Ivan finally opened his mental message box, purging all of the scathing, threatening communication before drafting a single message that he sent back to the central depot as well as the Master Program itself: //‘I have found a human and am learning. I will be back when the time is right.’//
There were times when Ivan pondered the history of human religion, but never had he felt sufficiently convinced that an all-powerful being or deity of any kind existed in the outer-reaches of life as he knew it. Pity. He would have liked something to pray to at that moment for reassurance that he had done the right thing in revealing not only Alfred’s existence but also their exact location due to an unfortunate side-effect of transmitting messages to the central depot. For better or worse, the Master Program would know his exact coordinates now.
“I am sorry, Alfred.”
“Huh? For being sick?”
Ivan didn’t have the heart to tell him the truth, just smiling sadly and wrapping his arms around the teenager’s body to draw his lover down against his broad chest once again. At least the pain was rapidly leaving his body now.
The sun was high in the sky by the time that Ivan’s brain had recovered fully from the barrage of messages. Alfred was ecstatic that his lover’s headache had finally subsided, but as they walked hand-in-hand near the shelter looking for more rainwater to drink and bathe in Ivan was on the lookout for a new shelter. The one Alfred had made his home was no longer safe now that the central depot had record of his whereabouts when sending the desperate message updating the Master Program on his current activities. There were a few promising locations but Ivan would need to explore them later on his own or else inform Alfred of his half-droid makeup and the potential danger that he had just brought upon them both.
“I think we’re outta luck unless you wanna roll around in a puddle or something. Do you wanna keep looking or-“
“-Alfred, what do you think about moving?”
“Huh? Why?”
It probably didn’t help that Ivan just stared at him for a moment while silently trying to come up with a reason that sounded legitimate. The longer that he remained silent with a worried expression the more Alfred’s own concern grew, not to mention the way that Ivan now nervously bit his lip, having consciously committed the motion to memory after learning it from Alfred days before. One thing was clear: Ivan wasn’t telling him something, and if it was important enough to have the strong blonde beside him nervous it was probably one whopper of a problem.
“Ivan…what’s wrong?”
There was no response to his question, but the human could see Ivan’s eyes growing wider and staring in shocked silence although the violet orbs were not on Alfred but instead focused inextricably on something behind Alfred’s turned back. He was almost afraid to look, but the human slowly turned his head and froze upon locking eyes with a slender Asian that appeared to be smirking at them. Humans rarely had reason to smirk and even less common was a man that possessed enough confidence to stand boldly out in the open without fear of being spotted or worse, hunted down.
Obviously, this man wasn’t a ‘man’ at all.
Operating purely on instinct Ivan thrust the smaller human behind him protectively, but his eyes never left Yao’s lean figure even as his childhood friend approached the cowering blonde and his half-droid lover with one eyebrow raised inquisitively. The shorter humanoid had quite obvious interest in the purely flesh-and-blood human half hidden by Ivan’s bulk, but his friend seemed rather determined to block Yao’s efforts to scan the boy and determine whether he was a viable host for breeding. Perhaps Ivan was reluctant to share the prize that he had acquired on his own while the smaller humanoid hunted on the outskirts of town.
“Playing house are we?”
Ivan remained reticent but his glare was deadly enough to leave no guesses as to his current disposition. He could feel Alfred still pressed to his back fearfully and it was more than enough incentive for the blonde humanoid to remain firm and never waver in the face of Yao’s probing questions.
“Is she pregnant yet?”
“He’s sterile.”
The expression on Yao’s face spoke volumes, but more concerning for Ivan was his own rapid navigation of their shared network, accessing the mainframe and locating Yao’s database just in time to see the smaller humanoid select a kill command and begin a more ominous approach of the boy still huddled behind his tall lover. Although Alfred tugged at his elbow and begged him through panicked whispers to run away, Ivan gently dislodged himself from the teenager and closed the remaining distance between himself and his friend-turned-rival. No words were needed. Just as Ivan could see his fellow droid’s programming, so too could Yao access Ivan’s database and confirm that his larger counterpart had no intention of letting Yao execute his kill command without a fight.
“Ivan,” he cautioned with a hit of malice, “the Master Program is going to be really pissed off.”
“I don’t care.”
Before Alfred could fully process the fact that their assailant seemed somehow familiar enough with Ivan to know his lover’s name, both humanoids charged forward at once and grappled for a moment before tumbling to the dusty earth below while still locked in a murderous embrace. Although considerably leaner in outward appearance, Yao’s inhuman makeup gave the smaller android much greater strength than a man composed merely of flesh and bone could ever possess. One slender hand found its way instinctively to Ivan’s throat and only the crushing grip of his larger friend’s fingers locked painful and unrelenting upon Yao’s narrow wrist lessened the smaller humanoid’s death grip on Ivan’s airway.
For years the machines had touted themselves as the ultimate victors of war now evolved into flesh and blood gods with cores of steel and immeasurable intelligence destined to enslave the lesser races. On occasion conflict had grown between two of their kind over a female to mate and potentially breed, but to have one little boy of the inferior species spark such a heated battle between two humanoids was unheard of. Ivan was acting irrationally, this both he and his former-friend knew, but neither he nor Yao would back down from a conflict and the one human amongst them was left on the sidelines watching his lover fight for him.
With his heart pounding and a growing sense of dread, Alfred quelled his terror just enough to step forward fully intent on helping Ivan until a glint of metal emerging from their assailant’s boot caught his eye just in time to shout a word of warning to his lover. While not physically aiding the taller man, his forewarning did allow Ivan a precious few milliseconds to realize that there was a blade in Yao’s hand. It was time enough to avoid mortal injury, but Ivan’s arm was still sliced open in the process of deflecting the knife away from the delicate blood and tissue of his neck before prying the blade from his former friend’s hand and jamming it ruthlessly into Yao’s throat without a moment’s hesitation. As warm blood flowed freely over both his palms and the blade still lodged in his best friend’s throat, the blonde couldn’t help but feel the slightest twinge of remorse for his actions. He hadn’t wished to kill Yao after all, only seeking to protect the beautiful human still staring at them wide-eyed.
The smaller humanoid was alive still, but his body convulsed slightly beneath Ivan’s bulk as life-giving blood poured from his neck wound and into the dust around them. Yao had always been judgmental, distant and sometimes even cruel, but in the wake of his impending death, the programs and files ingrained into his very being now crashing one by one, Ivan couldn’t help but notice that the body lying prone beneath him seemed to be more human than ever before. Maybe his friend had come to the same realization on his own. There could be no other logical explanation for Yao’s lips to quirk upwards in the barest hint of a smile even as twin tears, this half-droid’s first and last, welled up in his lashes and trickled over the dying humanoid’s cheeks. He spoke but the word was inaudible, only the faint motion of his lips could be read by the blonde still hovering over him.
//Pain?//
A sad little smile accompanied Ivan’s nod. It was the first time that his friend had felt this particular sensation, but on the verge of death it hardly seemed to matter any longer how much Yao learned about the feelings and emotions that governed the part of him composed wholly of flesh and blood. When Ivan dislodged the knife it was his merciful human side that guided the blade behind Yao’s blood-soaked neck to plunge it yet again into his flesh but this time with the intention to sever his central nervous system and cause the half-machine’s database to crash once and for all.
“He was… He was one of them.”
Alfred’s voice broke through the heavy silence, but Ivan didn’t speak just yet, still crouched over his fallen friend and wiping the knife clean on Yao’s pants before slipping it carefully into the back of his waistband The small human, skittish and fearful moments before, now moved into Ivan’s arms willingly once he had risen though the tender moment was abruptly cut short when Alfred noticed blood dripping down Ivan’s arm.
“F-Fuck, he cut you! Shit Ivan, that’s bleeding real bad. We gotta…”
His voice trailed off. In his initial distress Alfred had failed to notice the oddity of Ivan’s wound, but up close and personal now there was no denying the truth. There, blood soaked and buried beneath layers of flesh cleaved open, were small wires protruding from the taller blonde’s forearm.
For what felt like ages Ivan simply watched Alfred stare at his injury in silence as the disbelief in his young lover’s eyes slowly transformed into nervous realization that this was real. Ivan was a machine just like the one that lay slain at their feet, and this time Alfred didn’t have a big, strong protector to save him from the humanoid that embraced him tenderly. There was softness and warmth in Ivan’s arms, but the inhuman power hidden beneath his flesh and blood remained an unspoken threat as far as the smaller blonde was concerned.
“Alfred,” Ivan’s voice remained soft and soothing as he nuzzled the human’s ear tenderly, “I swear I will live my life just to keep you safe.”
He didn’t need to muster his internal mechanisms and scan the boy to know that the human was frightened beyond belief. The emotion was there in Alfred’s nervous silence, the way his muscles remained tense even though Ivan’s grip on his body was gentle, the way the boy’s breath came quicker now sending oxygen to his heart as the organ’s steady thumping grew faster and more panicked. Although Ivan knew he could have easily used his superior strength to hold the teenager against him by force, when Alfred pulled away to disengage their embrace the humanoid did nothing to protest the separation.
“Y-You lied.” Alfred’s voice shook though whether it was from anger or fear Ivan could not be certain. He suspected the later however since the smaller boy’s hands were clenched into tight fists as if he wanted to lash out and punch the very same man who had made love to him sweetly just a few hours before this mess started. “You fucking lied to me!”
“I would never lie to you.”
“You did!” Alfred raged. “It was all just a fucking lie!”
Ivan shook his head softly but the motion did little to quell the impending storm of Alfred’s temper.
“I never learned how to lie, Alfred. It’s not in my programming to speak untruths.”
Although deceiving the smaller blonde had always been his intent from the start, Ivan had never actually claimed outright to be a regular human. He simply customized his actions in mimic of Alfred’s own and let the human make his own assumptions. None of this seemed to calm the torrent of emotions taking hold over the young human, however. Hate, fear, denial and a heartbreaking sadness washed over the young man in a veritable flood all at once before spilling over to dampen Alfred’s cheeks with unbidden tears.
Ivan wanted to comfort him, to stroke the boy’s hair and kiss his forehead reassuringly, but before he could draw Alfred into his arms the teenager stepped away and regarded him this time with budding fear instead of loathing. After all, he now knew very well just what these human-machine hybrids were capable of, and although he was experienced with living in this harsh world Alfred wasn’t certain that he could best Ivan in a fight, especially considering that the boy greatly preferred fleeing instead of making feeble use of his untrained fists. He stepped back cautiously while watching to see if the humanoid would follow, and when Ivan did Alfred took off running as fast as his legs could carry him.
For a second Ivan just watched him go while trying to reconcile his conflicting emotions; not wanting to scare this beautiful boy but at the same time unwilling to let Alfred just vanish out of his life forever. His systems whirled, data streaming through his mind as his synapses worked in overdrive trying to determine the best possible outcome of this situation before the humanoid squeezed his eyes shut and firmly shook his head to dislodge the confusing flood of information. It was not technology but instead Ivan’s human side that governed his every move when the blonde finally took off running after his human lover.
