Author's Note: This should be the last chapter of this sick story that I wrote. Since I actually play this game with pro-rule regulation, some of these battles will be different than from what was shown in the anime. (As in, NFE's should really stand no chance against an OU like Lucario.) That said, enjoy the last chapter.
After a day of sobbing to herself within her room, Maylene finally took a chance to go outside and get some fresh air.
She did not see Lucario as she left her house to make way to the small stream down yonder. In a way, she was relieved to not see him considering what he did to her but at the same time she could not help but want to see him again.
The young martial artist finally made it to the stream and sat by the bank, feeling the cool breeze brush against her body. Looking at herself on the bank, she could not help but flinch from the sight of herself.
Her eyes were puffy from hours of crying and the vague signs of rings were forming under them as well. Her pink hair was a mess of pink strands as they were loose and fell down to her shoulders.
The bruises were starting to go away a bit but they were still there, on her arms and many more under her blue sleeveless shirt.
Maylene stared down at the water and nearly started to feel sorry for herself. How had it come to such a dire situation? However, the young girl shook her head furiously. Naturally headstrong and confident, she felt like she had already wasted enough time in pity.
Feeling like she needed to get started, she sat down and crossed her legs and began to meditate.
The soft sound of the wind along with the rushing water calmed her and Maylene soon found herself relaxing to a great extent.
As she put herself in a meditated mood, she soon began to think about the events that had transpired.
She found herself getting angry at the thought of Lucario and what he had done to her but the more she delved into her thoughts, the more she began to see the signs and soon found that Lucario alone was not to blame.
The young woman replayed that night over again and remembered begging for him to stop and then she remembered a very important thing that Lucario said.
How about you stop begging and try to stop me with your own two fists?
Maylene soon started to figure out just exactly what Lucario was trying to do.
He was trying to straighten her out, get her confidence back by pushing her, getting her to fight back and regain the fire that she had once lost.
Fat lot of good that did but then again, was it totally his fault?
The more Maylene thought about it, the more she found that she was in fault here as well.
Despite being her partner and friend, the fact did not change that Lucario was a Pokemon and was subject to instincts that were beyond his control. As a Pokemon trainer, it was her job to maintain the status quo and never waiver from it.
Of course she had heard stories of how Pokemon turned on their trainers, some of these trainers dying in the most gruesome of deaths due to their not keeping the status quo. The more Maylene thought about it, the more she found herself being quite the lucky one.
Her Lucario had the mind to actually snap her out of her funk, though he was rough in doing so. Her constant denials and pathetic behavior, Maylene realized, was what spurred her Lucario into doing what he did to her. Had she just tried to fight back and show strength and confidence as opposed to fear, this whole ordeal would have never happened.
It was then that Maylene heard footsteps come from behind her.
She snapped her eyes open at once, her martial arts instincts taking hold and reacting to a possible surprise attack, before looking over and seeing, to her genuine surprise, the young blue haired Dawn alongside her...Lucario?
"What do you want?" asked Maylene rather coolly.
"Mind if I take a seat?" asked Dawn with an inviting smile.
Maylene was a bit put off by Dawn's happy demeanor. What was more was her Lucario standing there. The young martial artist felt a twinge of fear but soon pushed it down. The meditation did its job in relaxing her and sorting out her thoughts. She knew that showing fear in front of her Pokemon would never do any good. She vowed that she would never let her Lucario do that to her again nor show fear before him.
"Do what you wish." said Maylene once more as she stared out into the stream.
Dawn's bright smile somewhat dampened by Maylene's cold attitude but she was not deterred as she took her seat next to the gym leader.
For a moment, there was an uncomfortable silence between the two girls and Lucario as they sat there, just watching the water move smoothly alongside its current.
"It has always been my dream to become the best Pokemon Coordinator in the Sinnoh region you know. My mother was one of the best back in the day and I made it my life's goal to follow in her footsteps." said Dawn as she broke the ice.
"Really? I thought that you partook in your journey to compete in the Sinnoh League?" asked Maylene in slight curiosity.
"No, though I do enjoy battling, the thought of my pokemon getting hurt over some battle does bother me to some extent." replied Dawn.
"I see." said Maylene as she stared down the stream.
"Yeah, but still, I have hit a road block lately. I was so excited when I first started my Pokemon contest and won. I thought that perhaps I had what it took to do this thing. However, after winning the first few, I started to lose. I have now lost twice in a roll and have stopped entering the contests." said Dawn with a slight frown on her face.
"Why? Didn't you say that it was your dream to follow in your mother's footsteps?" asked Maylene in surprise.
"Well, to many people, I tell them that I stopped just so that I can take a break, you know, recharge my batteries. However, I feel so lost and confused right now. I don't know what to do now and sometimes I think that leaving home was a big mistake. I worry that my indesicion is holding Ash back from his dreams. *sigh* I wish I was like Ash sometimes. He always has his goal in mind and never falters. Even though he is nowhere near the best trainer and has gotten his butt kicked more than once, nothing ever seems to phase that boy. He just keeps going and going and going." said Dawn as she drew her legs up her chest.
Going and going and going huh?
"Then why don't you go back to your contests then? You should know by now that there is more to the contests than it seems. In anything you do, it takes work, time and effort to become the best. I know you can do it, you just cannot give up." said Maylene with confidence.
"Hmph!" growled Lucario in agreement.
Dawn jumped a bit but Maylene did not flinch. She looked over at her Pokemon's eyes and bore down on them. Lucario looked back harshly, almost as if he was challenging her. They stood like that for a couple of seconds before Lucario withdrew his gaze.
Maylene smiled inwardly.
This conversation was making her feel much better and already she had hope in getting her relationship with Lucario back to normal, despite what he had done.
Maylene turned back to Dawn, who seemed to be looking at her intensly.
"You're right. I can't give up because I lost a couple of contests. That said, I think you should start accepting challenges as well. We both know that we win some and we lose some." said Dawn excitedly.
"Is that a challenge?" asked Maylene, her fighting spirit coming back up again.
"Maybe." said Dawn in a sing-song like voice.
It was then that there was a loud explosion that shook Maylene, Dawn and Lucario. From the smoke emerged Jessie, James, Mewoth and their Wobbufet.
"Well, look at this. Seems like this Lucario is quite the catch, don't you think? The boss will be very happy if we can nab it." said the red haired girl, Jessie.
"Quite right. Our time here won't have been in vain!" said James.
Maylene saw Dawn clench her fists and set an angry face.
"What are you guys doing here?" asked Dawn harshly.
"Do you know these people?" asked Maylene in confusion.
"They're Team Rocket. They steal Pokemon." growled Dawn.
"Really?" asked Maylene in skepticism. She could not feel any threatning aura from this band of misfits.
"We steal Pokemon alright and your Lucario is ours. If it comes along nicely, I'll give it a bit of my chocolate bar!" said Jessie as she took a bar of chocolate out.
"And he can have my bottle cap collection!" said James as he took out a rather extensive collection of bottlecaps.
Maylene just sweat dropped.
Lucario was not having any of this has he went forward and zoomed right before Team Rocket. The members looked on in surprise and fear as Lucario formed a bone club in his hands and struck the ground so hard that the resulting explosion was enough to send Team Rocket flying.
"Looks like Team Rocket is blasting off again!" screamed Jessie, James and Mewoth as they flew away.
"Wobbufet!"
It was silent for a moment before anything was said.
"That was...weird." said Maylene as another drop of sweat dripped down the back of her head.
"That's nothing. They get weirder than that." said Dawn with a look of disgust.
"I see." said Maylene.
"So, do we have a battle then?" asked Dawn in optimism.
"I don't...know." said Maylene with her head downcast.
Lucario grunted in dissatisfaction.
"You see, I don't have the confidence that I used to. It has affected my relationship with my Lucario and he has been angry at me. I guess you can tell by how he reacts to me now." said Maylene with a frown.
"But the fact that your Lucario is mad at you shows that it cares! It wants to have the chance to fight alongside you again!" replied Dawn happily.
"Really?" asked Maylene in suspicion.
"I'm sure of it! So how about it. You want to have a battle?" asked Dawn in excitement.
Maylene seemed to be thinking very hard about this. The past couple of days have been traumatizing to her and she did not think she had either the strength or the state of mind to battle.
However, she looked over at her Lucario and he seemed to want to battle. She could see the fire in his eyes and she knew that she could not refuse. She did not want to regress back to the way she was. She was going to get through this slump.
Maylene smiled as she then spoke.
"You got yourself a battle then! Just don't cry when you lose." said Maylene in a haughty voice.
"What! I don't cry!" pouted Dawn.
Maylene laughed at Dawn's reaction. As she did, she looked over to find that her Lucario seemed to be in a good mood. This was her chance to set things straight.
The battle soon started between Maylene and Dawn.
Dawn at once sent out her Buneary and Maylene sent out her Meditite.
At once Maylene knew that she had the type advantage but she had to practice caution. Buneary was considerably faster than her Meditite and usually had sly tricks to make up for the type weakness.
"Buneary, Ice Beam now!" commanded Dawn.
Maylene was somewhat surprised that this small bunny like Pokemon could pack a move like Ice Beam. It was no matter however.
"Meditite, Detect!"
The Meditite nodded slightly as it glowed a soft green then deftly avoided the Ice Beam like nothing.
"Nice try but that won't work forever. Buneary, use Encore!" said Dawn.
The Buneary started to clap excitedly, jumping up and cheering at the move the Meditite used.
The Meditite blushed at the sight of the cute bunny giving it a standing ovation for its perfectly executed Detect technique. It began to use its Detect technique again.
Maylene had to hand it to Dawn. That was a good move, locking Meditite to Detect.
The Meditite attempted to Detect again, but it did not have the power to use it twice in a roll and failed miserably as it flopped on its face.
"Buneary, use Ice Beam once more!" said Dawn.
The Buneary hit the Meditite dead on with the Ice Beam, encompassing the fighting Pokemon in ice.
"Yay! That should do it!" said Dawn in excitement.
"That was a pretty good trick to Encore my Meditite to a move that would fail if used consecutively and then strike it when it was helpless. You are pretty decent at battling. However, this battle is not over yet. Meditite, Confusion!" ordered Maylene.
The block of ice struggled against the psychic power of Meditite before breaking apart. The Buneary cried in panic as it was lifted off the ground and sent flying toward the Meditite.
"Meditite! Use Mach Punch now!" cried Maylene.
The Buneary was helpless as it got struck dead on by the Mach Punch. The Buneary gave a cry of pain before falling to the arena, knocked out.
"But how? I've seen my Buneary take fighting type moves better than this!" cried Dawn in disbelief.
"It is my Meditite's special ability, Pure Power. It doubles any physical attack that it throws out. The moment my Meditite made contact with your Buneary it was over." said Maylene with confidence.
"Wow, she's good." said Ash as he stood in the sidelines.
"To be expected from a gym leader." said Brock.
Meanwhile, Dawn was a bit dismayed. She did not think that the Meditite could be so strong. With an ability like Pure Power, her Pokemon could get seriously hurt and she did not want that. However, she did not want to back down.
"Return, Buneary! You did a great job, I'm proud of you." said Dawn as she returned Buneary. She got the next Pokeball from her belt and threw it out. "Go, Ambipom!" cried Dawn once more.
The Pokeball bounced on the ground to reveal a purple, monkey like Pokemon.
Maylene narrowed her eyes a bit and knew she had to play this carefully. Though she still had the type advantage, Ambipom was extremely fast and fully evolved. This could get dicey.
"Meditite, use Confusion now!" cried Maylene.
"Fake it out! cried Dawn.
Before the Meditite could even gather its power to charge a Confusion, Ambipom was already in front of it and promptly slapped the Meditite silly, dazing it.
"Use this chance now! Double-hit!" commanded Dawn.
The purple monkey nodded in agreement as it knocked the Meditite into the air and slapped it twice with its fist like tails. Meditite was knocked out.
Maylene winced a bit as she saw her Meditite fall. This Ambipom was going to be quite tough.
"Return, Meditite! Great job, just rest now." said Maylene. She gathered her other Pokeball and thought about sending Machoke.
"Send me out into the arena. Let me fight!" growled Lucario through his telepathic link to Maylene.
"Lucario...you know I still have not forgiven you for what you have done. However, we will talk about that later when I put you in your place. For now, go out and fight and be sure to follow my commands. Disobey me and suffer the consequences." threatened Maylene telepathically, who was still really upset at Lucario.
Lucario flinched a bit at the threatening aura that his trainer was giving out when she issued her command. However, on the inside he was smiling. His trainer was beginning to reassert herself. He would take any punishment she would dish out to him, gladly, if only she would return to the way she was before.
He went out and stared down the still healthy Ambipom.
"Lucario, use Bone Rush and take it out quickly!" commanded Maylene.
The Lucario grunted as he formed a large bone club in his hands and came at the Ambipom. The Ambipom tried to defend itself but Lucario was too good and landed a good swing on the Ambipom. The move, being ground type, would not have knocked Ambipom out normally, but the Ambipom had the misfortune of sliding across the arena and hitting its head at the very ledge of the arena, knocking it out.
"Oh bummer. Return Ambipom. I'm proud of you, You did good today." said Dawn as she sifted through her belt and took out another Pokeball.
"Go Piplup!" cried Dawn as she sent out the small, penguin like Pokemon.
Maylene knew she really had nothing to fear. Though it carried some flying type moves, Lucario's steel typing helped disregard that weakness.
Even so, she wanted to end this quick.
"Piplup! Use Whirlpool!" cried Dawn.
The Piplup gave a shrill battle cry as it jumped into the air and started to form a vortex beneath it.
"Lucario, finish this at once! Force Palm!" commanded Maylene.
The poor Piplup did not even see the blow coming as Lucario sped forward and went straight through the vortex of water to strike Piplup in the chest.
The small Pokemon struggled a bit before blacking out. It was over.
"Oh no, Piplup!" cried Dawn as she ran to her knocked out Pokemon.
"Don't worry. My Lucario knows to not go overboard when fighting weaker opponents. Your Piplup should be fine." said Maylene.
"I guess you win then." said Dawn somewhat distraught.
"It was a good battle." said Maylene.
"I'll say. I can't wait to challenge you tomorrow!" cried Ash as he and Brock ran into the arena.
"Whoa there! Seems like I'm getting challenges left and right. You okay with that Lucario?" asked Maylene as she turned to her Pokemon.
"Hmph!" nodded Lucario in excitement.
The next day soon started with the battle between Ash and Maylene.
"Man I'm so psyched to get this started already!" said Ash as he was waiting in anticipation.
"Though I'm glad that you are ready to battle, don't be surprised when you find all your Pokemon sprawling on the ground." said Maylene haughtily.
"We'll see about that! Go Staravia!" said Ash as he threw the Pokeball into the arena.
"I see. Well then, go Meditite!" said Maylene as she responded in kind.
Meanwhile, in the sidelines, Dawn and her Pokemon were there cheering in poms poms.
"You look pretty excited. Cheering for both sides?" asked Brock.
"Got it! While I want Ash to win, I also want Maylene to win as well!" said Dawn with a smile.
"Sheesh, the only reason why you even want Maylene to win is because she beat you." said Brock with grin.
"Shut it!" snapped Dawn.
Back to the battle, Meditite was having quite a hard time with Staravia.
Ash would have Staravia use Ariel Ace, which never misses under normal circumstances. This forced Maylene to have Meditite use Detect but Maylene knew that using Detect constantly would tire Meditite out and have the technique fail.
To put some space between the bird and Meditite, Maylene then thought of a plan. As the Staravia was backing off in order to prepare another Ariel Ace, Maylene then shouted.
"Meditite, use Fake Out now! Stun it before it comes around."
The Meditite cried out in response as it ran forward and managed to slap Staravia silly right before it hit its Ariel Ace.
"Now that it is stunned, use Confusion now!" said Maylene.
The Meditite's eyes glowed as it then used Confusion to raise the stunned bird up onto the air and slam it down on the ground. The Staravia was strong enough to break from the psychic hold but behold! it was confused as it flew around in circles and started to peck the wall.
"Staravia, return!" said Ash as he knew that his Staravia was confused. Maylene took this as her opportunity.
"Meditite, Meditate now while Ash is switching Pokemon!" commanded Maylene.
The Meditite soon started to glow as it began to draw from its inner power.
Ash soon selected the Pokemon he wanted to use and threw out Chimchar.
"Chimchar, use Fury Swipes! Don't give it a chance to Meditate all the way!" commanded Ash strongly.
The fire monkey came in with a flurry of swipes that disturbed the Meditite, but it had already drawn considerable power at this point (it's at +2 for you D.S gamers) and along with its Pure Power, Meditite was now a force to be reckoned with.
"Meditite, use Detect now!" cried Maylene.
The Meditite used Detect to dodge the blows of the fury swipes. The Chimchar soon jumped back.
"Flame Wheel now!" said Ash.
Perfect!
"Meditite, use Confusion and bring Chimchar to you!" said Maylene.
The Meditite glowed before it caught the Chimchar in mid-flame wheel and drew the small Pokemon in.
"Use Mach Punch now!" commanded Maylene.
Poor Chimchar never stood a chance as it took a +2 stab Mach Punch from Meditite with Pure Power.
Chimchar found itself getting socked into oblivion as it was sent flying back and was knocked out.
Ash and the others were shocked by the power this Meditite possessed.
"That was amazing. Only one shot!" cried out Dawn in amazement.
"Remember that the Meditite had already meditated and drew out some of its hidden power. That Chimchar never stood a chance." said Brock.
Ash returned Chimchar as he spoke.
"Great job out there. Now take a good, long rest! Now go, Staravia!" cried Ash.
Staravia had come out once again, looking a little bit worse for wear but alright and no longer confused.
"Staravia, use Arial Ace before that Meditite can retaliate!" said Ash strongly.
"Meditite, use Detect to avoid the blow!" commanded Maylene.
Meditite tried to use Detect, but had already used it far too many times and was not able to avoid the blow from Staravia.
Staravia hit Meditite head on, knocking it out.
"Meditite return! Thank you for your contribution. Your training has really shown fruit." said Maylene with pride before choosing another Pokemon to use. "Go Machoke!" said Maylene as she threw out a Pokeball.
Machoke came out to face the Staravia before it.
"Machoke, Bulk up now!" cried Maylene.
The Machoke flexed its muscles as it glowed with a white light.
"Staravia, Arial Ace now!" commanded Ash.
The Staravia came in with a flying strike but was dismayed to find that the Machoke took the blow much better than it had anticipated.
"What?" asked Ash in astonishment.
"Bulk up raises a Pokemon's constitution and attack power. Let me demonstrate. Machoke, Cross Chop!" said Maylene confidently.
Staravia was seeing stars as it was smacked hard and sent flying to the sky. Even though it resisted fighting moves, taking a +1 Cross chop from a Machoke still hurt.
Ash knew that Arial Ace was not going to cut it. He had to go for it.
"Staravia, use Brave Bird now!" cried Ash.
Maylene's eyes widened when she heard this. She was sure that her Machoke would not be able to take a Brave Bird and was too slow to dodge it.
"Machoke, Bulk up now and finish before that Staravia hits you!" cried Maylene in panic.
It was too late, however, as Staravia flew up and came in like a meteor before Machoke could Bulk up any further. Machoke fell to the ground, knocked out.
However, Staravia did not come out any better as it also limped down to the arena ground and was also knocked out from recoil.
Both trainers returned their respective Pokemon.
"Awesome job Staravia, I'm so proud of you! Now go, Buziel!" cried Ash as he threw the Buziel out onto the arena.
"You still need some improving Machoke. We'll have to train harder than that. Now go, Lucario!" commanded Maylene as she sent Lucario out onto the arena.
"Hmph."
Lucario entered the arena and soon faced off against Buziel.
Buziel came in with an Aqua Jet which struck Lucario smartly. Wanting to win this battle, Maylene soon only relayed her commands telepathically to Lucario.
Lucario, Bone Rush won't work well against this Buziel. Stick to Bullet Punch and Vacuum Wave to counter act the speed of that Aqua Jet. Stay that course until I say otherwise.
Very well.
At once, Lucario came in like a speeding bullet as he started his Bullet Punch technique. Ash was stunned at how fast it came and that Lucario was able to dodge the Aqua Jet while hitting Buziel. What was worse was that Maylene was not giving any commands but seemed to let Lucario fight on its own.
This worried the young boy. The last time he went against an opponent who seemed to let their Pokemon fight on their own, he had lost miserably. What was worse was that everytime he said a command, he tipped his opponent off. Ash was smart enough to know that at the very least.
"Buziel! Use Whirlpool to prevent Lucario from coming in and then I want you to fight how you want. I trust you to make the right decision." said Ash with a smile.
Buziel was somewhat nervous at the thought of fighting without receiving a command but it nodded at the challenge and soon formed a whirlpool.
Lucario, that Whirlpool will pose a problem. That Buziel is forcing us to fight in its domain. Are you familiar with the Swords Dance Technique?
Yes but I have yet to perfect it.
Use it. As long as that Buziel sees you powering up, it will have no choice but to come out. That is when we strike. Even an imperfect Swords Dance should give you enough power to take that Buziel out in one shot with a Bullet Punch.
Very well.
With that, Lucario jumped back and soon summoned his Bone Club. However, instead of charging in, the Lucario soon started to perform a variety of complex maneuvers and stances. Ash was confused by this but Brock knew exactly what was going on.
"Ash! That Lucario is using Swords Dance, which can greatly raise its attack power! Don't let it finish. Have Buziel stop it before its too late!" said Brock.
"Will do Brock, thanks!" said Ash before he commanded once more.
"Buziel, abandon the Whirlpool plan. Aqua Jet the Lucario before it finishes!" cried Ash.
Maylene smiled as her plan came to complete fruition.
That Buziel is coming in. Now is your chance. Use Bullet Punch now!
Lucario stopped the Swords Dance prematurely, but was still at +1 and threw out its strongest Bullet Punch.
Buziel did not even know what hit it as it was struck multiple times before being sent back.
Finish it off. Use Force Palm now!
Lucario did not be told as he was already running toward Buziel and struck the otter like Pokemon with a harsh blow to the diaphragm. The Buziel coughed a bit and wheezed before closing its eyes and fainting.
Maylene had won.
"We did it Lucario! We won!" cried Maylene in happiness.
"Return Buziel. Awesome job, you did great." said Ash though he was visibly down.
Later on that day, Maylene was seeing Ash and the others off.
"I think its best for me to pass on you right now and get some more training before I challenge you again." said Ash.
"You battled very well. However, it looks like I'm the victor today." smiled Maylene.
"Yeah, it was an awesome battle. That said, you better keep training cause I'll be back and ready to take that Vielstone badge away from you!" boasted Ash.
"I look forward to that day." said Maylene.
Then Dawn stepped forward.
"Thanks alot for talking to me. I was feeling really down but now I feel confidant in what I have to do. I'll become the best Pokemon Coordinator ever!" boasted Dawn.
"I wish you the best of luck then. Thank you for giving me the confidence to battle again." said Maylene with a smile.
"You're only happy cause you won! Don't get cocky however, I'll be back and beat you!" said Dawn in a face of determination.
"I'll be waiting then." said Maylene.
Soon they all parted their separate ways.
Later that night, Maylene once again was by the stream. She was not alone as Lucario was there with her. She had much on her mind and she was going to let him have it.
"Lucario. First off, let me tell you that I'm still furious for what you did to me. While I now understand that you were trying to have me get over my slump, the fact of the matter is that you went too far, instinct or no instinct." said Maylene harshly to Lucario.
"I am not wholly to blame for this. I have told you many times to act on your own defense. Never would I have been possessed to do what I did had you not appeared so weak and helpless at that moment." replied Lucario.
"Be that what it may, my trust in you has been affected because of this. How can I be sure that one day when we are sparring, you don't just jump on me again and try to...force yourself on me once more?" asked Maylene in angry suspicion.
"Then you will have to be prepared and defend yourself when the time comes and-"
Lucario was not given time to finish as he was struck down harshly and was eating dirt. He looked up at Maylene as her aura was radiating a threatening, no, a killing intent toward him.
The Pokemon kipped himself up but Maylene was already at him and struck his diaphragm harshly with her palm.
Lucario felt his breath go away as that was one of the few areas in his body that was not reinforced with steel. He was sent flying back as he hit a boulder, breaking it upon impact.
He rolled to the side as Maylene attempted to axe kick his prone form and he got up and proceeded to use a Vacuum Wave technique to throw off his trainer. He normally would never use such a technique on Maylene but he could tell that she was coming at him seriously now. She was not holding back. He would not either.
Maylene managed to step aside from the technique but Lucario was already ready and came in with a Bone Rush. Maylene managed to block the first blow with her arms, but she winced in pain from the impact, her arm used for blocking the blow already forming a huge, red bruise. Lucario twirled the bone club a bit to disorient his trainer and made for a high swipe to the head.
The young martial artist guessed his intent and ducked the blow and swept Lucario from underneath. Lucario fell and let go of his Bone club on the way down. Maylene proceeded to pick the Bone Clue up and started to come at Lucario with it.
Lucario knew that he was in trouble. The Bone Club was a ground type weapon, which he was weak to. Two, maybe three strikes, was all he could take from it before getting knocked out.
Maylene used the Bone Club as if it were a staff and came upon Lucario. She made for aiming at his legs, throwing quick strikes that sent the Pokemon stepping back. She used a feint for a blow to the midsection, which got Lucario to block there, when she came elbowed Lucario on the jaw, snapping it shut and sending him flying off.
The young girl winced in pain once more as her elbow was in great pain. Striking Lucario from there was like hitting a metal bolt and Maylene felt that she perhaps caused more damage to herself than to Lucario.
Still, with Lucario at a positional disadvantage, she ignored the pain and ran forward with the Bone Club in hand and made to hit the grounded Lucario.
Lucario used his arms to block the Bone Club but howled in pain at the contact. Maylene attempted to hit him once more, but Lucario rolled to the side and managed to recover. Knowing that Maylene was open, he went in with a Bullet Punch.
Maylene's eye's widened at the sight of Lucario suddenly coming in like a silver cannon and she tried to block with the Bone Club.
The club broke under the first two blows of the Bullet Punch and Lucario sent another eight more to pelt Maylene rapidly under the span of a second.
Maylene's body exploded into a symphony of pain and agony as she was sent flying back. She skidded on the ground and felt her body getting weaker.
The silver blur was coming again and Maylene knew that Lucario was attempting another Bullet Punch.
She knew that she could not take another one of those. A Bullet Punch from a Lucario could break stone if all the blows connected. She was fortunate that she had the Bone Club to curb some of the damage.
But she knew that she could possibly die if she took another Bullet Punch.
With that she closed her eyes and awaited Lucario's approach. At the last second, she stepped Lucario as he came in a flash of blinding silver and was at his back. She charged her ki for the only Pokemon technique she had ever learned.
"Aura Sphere." said Maylene in a quiet, mournful voice.
Lucario's eyes widened in surprise. He was weak to this fighting technique and he knew that he could not take an Aura Sphere from this distance without getting seriously injured.
But it was too late.
Lucario could only feel a searing pain as he felt as if his body was getting pounded into dust. The Aura Sphere sent him flying right into a pine tree and the impact was so great that some parts of the tree exploded away in splinters. He tried to get up, but his body was shot into a pain so piercing and sharp that he had no choice but to slump back down.
He had lost.
As he stared out before him, he saw Maylene hobbling and soon, she stood before him, the full moon casting a long shadow over him.
"Lucario. Why? Is this what you really wanted?" asked Maylene as her voice began to tremble.
Lucario looked up at her and he was happy to know that she defeated him, even when he went all out. However, his joy was short lived as he saw something unusual.
Tears?
"Maylene...why do you weep?" asked Lucario quietly.
"Why? Because you forced me to do this to you, that's why! Can't you understand that it hurts me to do this to you?" asked Maylene in a mix of anger and sorrow.
"But at the very least you have your confidence back. That is all that matters." said Lucario quietly.
"No it does not! I CARE for you! It should have never gone as far as this to regain the trust that we once had. You have hurt me far more than you can ever conceive with what you did to me a couple of nights ago and now you insist on hurting me even more by making me do this to you!" cried Maylene loudly as she knelt down besides Lucario and pounded feebly on his chest.
Lucario was confused by this outburst and could not think up anything to say.
"Lucario...do you care for me? Or am I something of convenience to you?" asked Maylene softly.
"I...do care." replied Lucario.
"Then why are you making me do this?" asked Maylene once more.
"Because I care, that's why. My methods may have been cruel but you must understand that I will not obey any that I perceive as weaker than I. Had I not cared for you, your carcass would have been scattered across this land already, not here before me. I overrode my instinct to kill you on the spot and instead did my best to goad you into regaining your role once more.I am not human, I'm a Pokemon and I am loth to be a slave to my baser instincts. I hope you understand this." said Lucario sadly.
Maylene was silent for a while as she sat there. Soon, however, she went toward Lucario and stretched her arm out and caressed it with her hand.
"Lucario, I understand. But that still does not make what you did to me right. I care for you Lucario, I really do and I am willing to forgive and forget what has happened so that we can live life the way we normally have. That said, let me put it in words that you and your...baser instincts can understand." said Maylene with a hint of sarcasm as she shifted closer to Lucario before continuing.
"You try and force yourself on me again, instinct or no instinct, and I will kill you. I will beat your proud body of iron down until it is tin foil if you do that again. Do I make myself clear?" asked Maylene as her eyes narrowed dangerously and she exuded a terrible killing intent.
Lucario nodded quietly and said nothing. There was nothing to be said. She threatened him if he tried to breech their trust like that and after this fight, he was going to take her threat seriously.
"I'm glad you understand." said Maylene once more as she stood up. "Come, lets get you back home. I think I may have a potion or two that can fix you up." said Maylene with a smile as she offered her hand.
Lucario smiled himself as he knew that Maylene was back to her old self, more or less.
Author's Note: Hope I did not make this too unrealistic by having Maylene get over her trauma so soon but meh. Anyway, hoped you all enjoyed.
