D dismounted and slapped his horse’s side, sending it back out of the forest. He then turned toward the beast. They began to slowly circle each other as D studied the creature. It looked a bit like a werewolf only its neck was much longer and its feet had eight claws instead of five. The color of its fur mimicked its surroundings, allowing a certain amount of camouflage for sneaking up on prey. The nose was merely two slits below its eyes and the huge mouth with rows of sharp fangs opened to emit a low growl of challenge. The creature stank of decay and rot, a human would have probably passed out from the overwhelming smell alone. But D slowly stepped sideways with the same rhythm as the thing, hand on sword, waiting. A voice came from it, the words not from its gaping mouth, but put into D’s mind.
I am called Hyaku because I am 100 beasts in one. I can sense your strength. You fear me no more than you fear the one I protect. You are a creature like Him, and yet not. Had I met you first, I would have gladly taken your orders but I am now bound to Him. Let us not fight. Merely turn and go or one of us will not see the next sunset.
“It’s too late now, it will be night soon and your master will wake to wreak his havoc. And I can’t have that.”
This is regretful, but so be it.
D drew his sword slowly and made ready to pounce on his prey when suddenly he stopped. He stood stock still, no muscle moving in the slightest. His vision began to blur and when it cleared the scene had changed. There was a child in Hyaku’s mouth. A small girl with brown hair was crying as she dangled from its jaws. She was too frightened to struggle; she hung limply, her hair in her eyes, large tears falling to the ground. He could see every detail: the blue ribbon in her hair; the dark blue dress slowly staining red; one of her small shoes falling off. The creature grinned at him and closed his jaws a bit more. The girl shrieked and began to flail.
And still D didn’t move. He couldn’t move. He was forced to watch as the monster began to gnaw on her back; her screams becoming more intense and hopeless. With a flick of his neck, the monster threw her to the ground and began to rip her insides out. And she still screamed, always screaming, that never-ending high-pitched sound was the worst of it all.
“Wake up,” his left hand commanded; the voice seemed so distant to him. “This is a psychological attack, he’s distracting you, wake up!” His hand began to move and he felt a sudden pain in his leg as his own parasite nipped him. D blinked and turned quickly as he came out of the spell. But it was too late.
The monster, now behind him, bit into his other thigh. D swung his sword, but the creature just as quickly let go and seemed to vanish.
“Aren’t you a clever one,” D whispered as he crouched on the ground in pain, eyes and ears alert for the creature’s presence. The psychological attack from Hyaku had only been a second long, but that was all he needed to launch a sneak attack on D. Anyone else would have been killed before he even knew what was happening. The sun was gone and the night was falling around them. The creature’s speed was impressive for its size for it was suddenly in front of D with its evil grin teasing him.
Ha, ha! I am far superior to any beast you have killed before. These men try to come and kill me, not realizing what I am. There was another, my younger companion, she was too inexperienced with dealing with these lowly humans and was killed by one a few nights ago. I am not so easy to kill.
D’s eyes grew wide and he began to cough up blood, the red liquid splatting the ground before him.
I have not merely bitten you, my friend, I have poisoned you. You will suffer greatly, for once it is in your blood it becomes alive and sucks the energy out of you. It is like an acidic parasite that eats your insides and you will cough up blood until you die. It is a pity, that blade has slain many. Perhaps I shall give it to my master as a gift.
Hyaku moved forward to grab D’s sword. The dhampir spit up more blood but he rose to his feet. The eyes fixed on Hyaku were crimson and fangs jutted from his mouth as a hissing sound escaped his lips. A dark miasma began to swirl around D’s feet. Blood was still pouring out of his mouth as he stared at the creature. Hyaku paused in wonder.
I knew you were strong. You are like my master, and yet not. You are much stronger. Perhaps I have bitten off more than I can chew.
But he didn’t seem at all alarmed, just curious and perhaps amused. As powerful as D became when his vampire side took control, he had lost too much blood this time. His blood was not healing itself as quickly as it was being torn apart. He lunged at the beast with his sword, but Hyaku was indeed very fast. He dodged all of D’s attacks with ease. D matched his speed at first, but was beginning to slow. The poison was taking its toll: his wound would not heal and he could not stop throwing up blood. He tried to go for Hyaku’s throat, but the beast was laughing.
You’ll not have my blood dhampir, the poison lives within me and I am immune, but more of it would surely kill you all the quicker. I shall leave you now to die in these woods while I accompany my master to feast on the townspeople. Sayonara.
And he was gone, disappearing like a drop of rain in the desert sand. D fell to the ground and could not rise. His eyes were back to normal and his fangs had disappeared.
“I need your help,” D said.
“Of course,” his left hand replied.
“That will not be necessary,” a voice from the shadows said. A figure was walking towards him but the dhampir's vision was blurring. That was when D passed out.
Someone was dressing the wound in his thigh. He opened his eyes to find Katherine peering down at him. “You are awake, then.” He sat up quickly and looked around. They were obviously in the Clemmons’ house; the draperies over the windows and paintings on the walls gave it away immediately. Katherine’s touch was gentle as she bound his leg with shreds of cloth, wrapping them right over his clothing. D put his hand to his head.
“I thought I would wake up in hell tonight. How did I get here?”
She sat back on the bed he laid in. “After I left you, I came and told my brother where you were. He feared you would not be back tonight. You almost were not; honestly I expected a little more from you.” She raised an eyebrow in question.
D scowled at her. “That monster wasn’t exactly a pushover.”
Katherine smiled broadly and looked away. D had just caught a twinkling in her eye before she stood and smoothed out her dress. “Is there anything you need?”
“I didn’t expect you to be waiting on me, where is your servant?”
Her face darkened in anger. “Mary was taken tonight. I told her to stay in the house where it was safe, but she insisted on seeing her sister who was afraid to be alone. She never arrived. We found this out right after we found out the barrier had been broken and the night watchmen murdered. With this vampire’s appetite, this will be a ghost town before winter.”
Katherine looked towards the window and clenched her fist until the knuckles were white. It was inky black outside and the wind whistling through the trees sounded like a mocking laugh, as if aimed directly at her. She muttered under her breath and D stood up slowly, leaning on the bed a little for support.
“I’m sorry about Mary and I appreciate the care you’ve given me.”
She seemed to remember herself and gave a tiny grin at his kind words. “I was keeping a lookout for you when I saw something in the yard by the fence. You were just lying there so Mark and I brought you in. The night is almost over; you should rest before you set out for his lair tomorrow.” She turned to leave when he touched her arm.
“Katherine.” He turned her around and looked in her eyes. “You saw no one else when you found me? Was the fence broken there?”
She just stared at him, her face expressionless. “Nothing unusual, except you lying there. Just take it easy and rest your leg.” And she left.
He sat back down on the bed. “Alright, now tell me what really happened.”
“Someone came; someone dressed in dark brown clothing. Looked like a Hunter. Cut their arm and gave you blood. In your condition, you didn’t think twice. Latched on hard. You drank it up like mother’s milk, he, he. Half drained the guy before he stopped you. He picked you right up like it was nothing, threw you over his shoulder and took off. It was kind of confusing next. One minute you were put on the ground in their orchard and then the girl and little boy were running up to take you back to their house. Actually, I’m not sure how long you lay there before you were found. Your wounds had already started to heal from the blood the Hunter gave you. Something mysterious about that guy: didn’t say much, smelled like dirt and horses. And just leaving you there, maybe he went back to fight Hyaku. I don’t know, but you better snuff the vampire out tomorrow or there won’t be anyone left to pay you. The beast protecting him definitely isn’t a pushover. He, he, I’m starting to like that girl.”
“This mystery hunter… he seems friendly enough but suspiciously so… and the girl, there’s something about her I can’t put my finger on.” D rose and tested his weight on the injured leg again. It had been hours and it still wasn’t fully healed but he could walk so he opened the door and looked down the hallway. The silence in the house was unnerving. The staircase to the first floor was to his left but he walked to a door further down the hall. There was light streaming from under the door. He knocked and heard Katherine say “Enter”.
When he opened the door two things caught his attention immediately: Katherine sitting on a windowsill with the window wide open and the night air blowing her red hair out in streams around her; and a strange smell that came from something burning in a plate on her dresser. D grabbed his throat and began to choke.
“Oh!” Katherine jumped up and immediately tossed the burning something out the window. “I thought it was my brother. You cannot come in here, D!” Once the smell was gone, D could breathe again.
“Katherine…”
“My friend Ray calls me Katie. I like it and I would like you to call me that,” she spoke to him with such a look of happiness, as if she hadn’t a care in the world.
“Katie,” he stared at her, shocked. “How did you know about that? And that!” he pointed to a large cross over her window.
She grinned mischievously and closed the door behind him. “You mean how come I can remember things the Nobles programmed our minds to forget? I read about these things in a book and I just did not forget it. Now you see why I am not worried.”
D was impressed but he said, “You know these things alone will not stop a vampire if he really wants you.”
She sat back at the window. “True, but it will certainly discourage one who is not targeting me in particular. And if one tried to get in, the cross will keep him at bay long enough for me to ge… to get help.” She looked back at D as if she had forgotten he was there.
“Does your brother…”
“No,” she cut him off, “he does not know what these are, and he does not know there is also a cross outside of his window. It is not much, but it makes me feel a little better. I rest easier knowing it's there.” She folded her hands in her lap and was a young lady again. “Would you like tea or anything, just to have something warm to drink?”
D thought he had had enough warm drink for one night. The stranger’s blood was still flowing through his veins, intoxicating him. “Katie, honestly, I thought you were a fool at first but I see the truth now: you are fearless. The idea that a vampire with a huge beast could be hunting you does not scare you in the least. And though that in itself would make you a fool, you are not as careless as you appear to be. I’m sorry I thought less of you and talked down to you before.”
For D to apologize to someone was a rarity and the girl seemed to realize it, for she blushed for the first time in his presence. “No worries, I would rather come across that way, makes it more of a challenge for my brother to marry me off. Who would want to marry a twit who could not take care of herself, much less anyone else?”
D just stared at her. “There is much more to you than meets the eye.”
She looked at him solemnly. “And you. Now that we understand each other, what is your plan for the vampire’s monster? Will you continue to face him in the forest or will you try to catch him at his murder games? That vampire is truly a coward. Never shows his face unless his monster is protecting him,” she said with vehement disgust.
“Hyaku, the beast calls himself. He claims I am stronger than his master and yet he beat me so easily. What does that say of his master?” D said.
“Then why does he serve him?” she mused to herself.
“Perhaps…” D trailed off as he looked out the window. “The sun will be up shortly. I will speak to your brother and then I will hunt this beast.”
He moved to go but she stood up quickly and took his arm. “I want to go with you. I will not tell Dathan, but I want to see this monster for myself.”
He brushed her hand away. “Don’t play the part of a fool so well that you forget your own safety. You may not be afraid, but you should be. I don’t want you anywhere near him. I am supposed to protect you, don’t make it any more difficult than it already is.”
“But what if it kills you this time?” She cried, her voice growing louder.
But his left hand was already on her forehead and she passed out. He laid her on her bed.
“Whoa!”
“What is it?”
“Nothing, just… felt something from her… it’s nothing.”
