The night was cold, the streets mostly deserted and not a sound to be heard as Soubi climbed the stairs to Kio’s front door. He didn’t knock, he never knocked, turning the handle and walking in. He stopped for a moment then, seeing Kio’s naked form on the sofa, some guy he didn’t know having his way with him. Soubi shut the door and walked into the kitchen for a beer. “Oi Kio, you using the bed? Otherwise I’m gonna crash,” he said walking towards the bedroom door. It was then Kio seemed to notice him and he started and stared in shock. Then he winced as the man who was atop him nipped with his teeth. Kio pushed him back, grabbing his jeans and following Soubi into the bedroom.
“What happened?” he demanded “What did you do to Ritsuka?” he added. There was after all no other reason Soubi would abandon his home to come here. Not anymore. Kio and Ritsuka were so similar but Kio didn’t have the control of Soubi that Ritsuka and Seimei had.
“Seven moons are back. Ritsuka was attacked. He needs rest so I need to protect you in person, and him by not being there.”
Kio sighed. “Mark, go home,” he said and there was some grumbling from the other side of the living room. The man came to Kio, placed a kiss on his bare neck and whispered something before leaving. Kio sat next to Soubi on the bed. “Explain.”
Soubi described the recent events in a monotone as Kio listened, then he downed the rest of the beer and flopped back to the pillow. Kio thought for a moment and then said “He still doesn’t trust you does he?” quietly, as if he were almost afraid to voice the words. Ritsuka didn’t trust anyone but it had gotten better lately. Now it was in tatters again.
“I think he believes that I will hurt him this time. I cannot disobey. Seimei is my god, whether I would wish it or not,” Soubi answered bitterly. Kio almost smiled. That was some progress at least. That Soubi no longer wished to belong to the elder Aoyagi.
“Well…its true isn’t it? If you meet Seimei again then you will not disobey,” and Kio couldn’t quite keep the edge from his voice. He had been at the mercy of those in Seven Moons and he didn’t ever want to be involved with them again. But right now he was worried about Ritsuka. “He will never be what you want Soubi. He’s a good kid who doesn’t want to hurt you.”
“Before…” he started as he turned onto his side on the bed. “Before he was with me, there where I am. Just for a moment and it was the most complete I ever felt Kio.” His eyes started to close and Kio found that he was irritated, really, really irritated.
“I’ll go see how he is. You stay here. Whatever is happening isn’t to do with me anymore anyway.”
Soubi didn’t answer but Kio knew he wasn’t asleep yet. As he got up Soubi sat up straight. “Find out how he really is before you come back. Zero will lie.”
--
Kio shook his head as he walked to Soubi’s apartment . It was too far from home to make this trip lightly. He got to Soubi’s door and heard the shouting, the screaming and a cord inside him knew it was Ritsuka. He ran to the door and was almost knocked off his feet as it didn’t open. He banged on it. “Ritsuka!” he yelled, not sure if he was alone or if those boys were there too. The door opened quickly and Natsuo stood there. His hair was plastered down at the edges with sweat and he looked tired. The screaming didn’t stop and Kio was pulled inside and the door bolted again. “What on earth?” he asked and Natsuo shot him a look.
“Natsu!” the voice came from the bedroom, urgent, worried and strained. Kio followed as Natsuo ran back and straight to the bed. He held Ritsuka’s arms as his body writhed and jerked. “Which one is it now?” Youji grit through his teeth. “These stupid things aren’t helping him Natsu, can’t we just not give them to him?” he dodged a flying foot and repositioned himself to better hold Ritsuka down. Natsuo grabbed a piece of paper, looked at the clock and picked up a bottle from the floor. He tipped out a blue pill, then got another bottle and tipped out two pink ones.
“All together?” he questioned and Youji grimaced but nodded.
“No choice, you won’t get three in separately.” He swore, tightening his grip. Blood dripped slowly from a cut on his cheek and on the floor was the letter opener that Soubi had been victim to days before. It was bloodstained. Kio took in the scene as Natsuo knelt on Ritsuka’s arms and waited a moment. As Ritsuka opened his mouth to scream Natsuo dropped the pills inside, followed by a squirt of water from a sports bottle. Ritsuka choked and coughed and Kio ran forward but Youji stopped him before he could touch Ritsuka. Then he slumped to the floor, Natsuo joining him as Ritsuka settled to the bed. His eyes were wide open and tears flowed freely from them and across his cheek to the pillow, but he wasn’t writhing and screaming anymore. Youji punched the floor, then looked at Kio who was gaping at Ritsuka.
“Stop staring. That doesn’t even stop the pain, just the spasms so he doesn’t get hurt worse. He’s still hurting and Soubi went off wherever, to you he said. He went to you when his sacrifice is laying here so fucked up because of him!” he almost wept. The strain on his mind and body getting to him. “It started when he left, just after the first pills. We couldn’t do anything but hold him Kio.”
Natsuo put a comforting hand on Youji’s back, they were close, like twins but Kio knew that was the bond between those of the same name. Soubi was different, there was no bond, and the bond with Seimei was a forced one. But Soubi needed that now, needed to be controlled, just as Nisei did, and neither of them saw anything wrong in it, or how much it hurt Ritsuka. Not that Nisei needed or wanted to care about that.
“He kept calling for Soubi,” Youji breathed as Natsuo helped him lie back against the edge of the bed and stretch his legs out on the floor. Natsuo didn’t say anything as he got up, fetching the first aid kit and starting to patch Youji up.
“How did you get in such a state?” Kio asked and looked to the perfectly still form of Ritsuka.
“Ritsuka will only let Soubi touch him. No one else,” Natsuo snapped and Kio noticed the bandages that were wrapped around his arm, the tape over various cuts and grazes. He shook his head.
“Then why didn’t Soubi stay, I’ll call him. You two rest,” he said and stood up. They didn’t stop him but they knew Soubi wouldn’t come. There was no reason for Soubi to come now. Ritsuka wasn’t in danger. Unless he popped his stitches or something.
Kio dialled as he got to the kitchen and the phone was answered immediately, “Youji, what is it? Are you-”
“They aren’t under attack,” Kio said and he almost saw Soubi go to hang up. “Ritsuka keeps calling for you,” he breathed.
“They can handle it,” was Soubi’s only reply. “You should get back here.”
“Soubi, they are beat up. Ritsuka is having fits and won’t let anyone touch him. They are having to force the pills into him to stop him hurting himself anymore and Youji says they don’t stop the pain, just the spasms. You should get over here. We can all protect him together.”
There was silence from the other end of the phone, then a slight rustling of sheets. “Fine, but they will come then. They will come and they might destroy him.”
“Soubi,” Kio pleaded, taking the phone away from the others as far as he could. “Trust or not, he’s calling for you. So come here and be there for him while he needs you. If you don’t do this Soubi I’m never going to talk to you again.”
There was silence at the other end of the phone, then it went dead. Kio hoped that meant he was on his way, but minutes passed without a sound, never mind a sight of Soubi. Youji wandered into the kitchen, swaying like a drunk and picked up a totally different bottle of pills. These were a brown yellow colour. “How many does he have to take?” Kio breathed in shocked awe.
“Lots, and they overlap so they are about every half an hour or so. He’s not slept yet.”
“Neither have you, shall I do it?”
Youji’s hand tightened around the pill bottle. He shook his head. “No. We have it pretty much down now. You can help if you want though.”
Kio nodded and went back to Ritsuka. He met the eyes of the child who had been dead set on getting him out of that place when he had been taken. He hadn’t really seen him since and now it was like this. He took Youji’s shoulder before he pinned Ritsuka down, before he even got close. He could see the muscles twitching under the covers. “Let me try something,” he said softly, taking the water and pill from Youji. Natsuo watched carefully but didn’t do anything to stop Kio as he walked forwards. He didn’t act afraid, just sat on the edge of the bed and put a hand to Ritsuka’s face. Natsuo and Youji started, jumping forwards but Kio ignored them.
“I love you, Ritsuka,” he breathed quietly and the entire room stilled. Ritsuka however sobbed.
“You came back,” he cried, taking Kio’s hand. “I hate you Soubi,” he breathed as Kio put the pill gently in his mouth and gave him a sip of water. “I really hate you.”
A moment later Ritsuka was asleep. Youji punched Kio as soon as he was far enough not to disturb their sleeping ward and Natsuo had to grab him before he pounced atop Kio as he sprawled on the ground. “Why?” he hissed. “Why did you do that!?”
Kio looked up, blood coming from his nose and he wiped his sleeve across his face. “Because he calms for Soubi. For whatever reason it is it doesn’t matter. He needs to be as peaceful as he can. So if Soubi isn’t coming back, then I’ll stay here.”
There was a shuffling then as Ritsuka appeared at the door to the living room. He padded over to Kio, dragging one of the blankets with him and just fell into his chest. Kio caught him quickly, lowering him gently as Youji and Natsuo quietly freaked out that he was out of bed. But he was asleep again, laid on Kio like he was a bed. Kio smiled and picked him up. “I’ll sit in bed with him. Wake me when it’s time for the next one okay?”
Natsuo and Youji nodded as Kio disappeared, then they curled on the sofa together to get a bit more sleep. Kio sat up in the bed. Ritsuka curled against his chest and grasped his shirt in his small hand. He pulled the covers up, shifting a little to get comfortable and laid his head back against the wall. Moments later he too was asleep, and that was where Soubi found them.
“Kio, what are you doing?” there was an edge to the voice that woke Kio from his half slumber. He frowned.
“Pretending to be you. You should have seen the state he was in and all he wanted was you, you idiot. He is right not to trust you, telling him you love him like that and never being there. He’s hurt because of you right?” Kio was angry but he shifted Ritsuka to the bed and got up. Immediately Ritsuka started to moan in pain. “There, and stay there. Take it as atonement for being such an idiot.”
Kio walked out of the room, waking the Zero pair and gesturing to their room. All three of them went to sleep then, and Soubi was stood there listening to Ritsuka moan in pain. Then he climbed into the bed, and moved Ritsuka so he was laid on his chest. The moaning stopped and Soubi sighed. He began to comb his fingers through the little hair Ritsuka had. Seimei had always had longer hair than his brother, but Soubi had never touched it. Seimei was violent, possessive and slightly mad, but Soubi still thought of him, still knew he would be branded Beloved forever. He put a hand to his neck and found that he wished the brand gone, that he wished it had been carved Loveless. Ritsuka would never be the sacrifice unit that Seimei had been, he would never want to fight and each time Soubi would have to drag him into it, and keep more secrets.
“Ritsuka, you hate secrets,” he said softly. “I wish I could tell you.”
Ritsuka stirred a little, resettling himself on Soubi’s chest. “I knew it was Kio before. But he too can touch because he too is special.”
Soubi stilled. “Special how?” he asked and Ritsuka laughed.
“Special to me,” he breathed out as he slept again. Soubi frowned, finding he didn’t like that especially since Kio was into guys now but he shook his head, held Ritsuka a little tighter and drifted to sleep himself.
“I don’t want to wake them,” Youji whispered. All three of them were stood next to the bed where Ritsuka slept soundly with Soubi.
“Well, its past time for another, so maybe he’s alright now?” Natsuo said as Kio started to shake his head.
“Look, he’s gonna wake any second,” he said and pointed at Ritsuka’s fist tightening in Soubi’s shirt, the way it trembled said something about the amount of pain wracking that tiny body. Natsuo shook Soubi without hesitation then, shoving the glass of water onto the bedside table and shoving the pills into Soubi’s hand.
“Quickly, before he-”
It was too late, Ritsuka woke with a gasp, his hand tightening on Soubi’s shirt so tightly that Soubi sat up. He held him close. “Here Ritsuka,” he said opening his hand for the pills. Ritsuka shouted out and shook his head, squeezing his eyes closed. Soubi held them out to Kio. “You said you could-” he stopped as Ritsuka turned into him, burying his head deeper into Soubi’s chest, his breathing coming in ragged gasps. “Ritsuka,” Soubi breathed so softly that Youji and Natsuo gave him questioning looks. “You have to take these,” he continued. Ritsuka ignored him so Soubi shot the intruders into his bedroom one killer, narrow eyed glance, shoved the pills in his mouth, took a gulp of water from the glass but didn’t swallow and then tipped Ritsuka’s head back.
A small trickle of water ran down Rtisuka’s cheek as Soubi used his tongue to pry apart Ritsuka’s lips and pass the waterlogged pills to him. Ritsuka’s eyes went wide before he swallowed, his entire body still shaking. Soubi held him tighter as he shook and Kio walked forwards and checked his temperature and frowned.
“Soubi he-” he started but stopped at the look in Soubi’s eyes.
“It’s alright,” Ritsuka said. “I'm not going back there, no matter what I'm staying here. That’s an order Soubi,” he breathed and closed his eyes.
“Ritsuka you’re too sick!” Youji protested jumping onto the bed. “You have to go back there and let them heal you.”
Ritsuka tightened his fist in Soubi’s light shirt, his hand trembling with the pain. The pills would work soon enough, then he would leave. If Seimei wanted him then this time Soubi would not be involved. He would order it. “Don’t worry Youji. I’m fine.”
“Ritsuka, you-” Soubi started but stopped as Ritsuka shook his head.
“Soubi, pain is…pain is evidence…” he breathed and Soubi tightened his arms around that frail body.
“Pain is evidence of the bond between us,” Soubi said quietly. Then shook his own head. “I know Ritsuka but it was my pain! Only my pain to-” he choked off, his anger that the others were still there smothering the pain he felt in his chest. Soubi didn’t show emotion, didn’t break. Pain was a tool to make you stronger, something you would feel and not give in to. That was what he had been taught, but that was before this boy, before Seimei had sent him here, before he had experienced the real meaning of the words Seimei had bound him to say.
I love you
Words that brought pain to them both, and wouldn’t be uttered here, not now. “Get out,” Soubi said, his voice low but not angry. Kio knew better and put a hand on Natsuo’s shoulder to lead him away. Youji wasn’t getting off the bed. “Get out,” Soubi repeated and Youji flinched but didn’t back down. Ritsuka reached out a hand to Youji’s own and smiled.
“It’s alright. Go have fun, get pancakes,” he added with a short chuckle. Youji frowned but relented and stood up.
“Five minutes, two blue, one green. Then some rest. We will bring food back.”
With that Ritsuka and Soubi were alone once again.
