Arc 1: Childhood
Chapter 3:
A Dream of Love
The hilltop was bright, warm, and unfamiliar. Sona awoke with a start, surprised by this unfamiliar locale. Didn’t she go to sleep in her bed? What was she doing on top of a hill…? She put her hand to her hea-her chest? No, her head was up there….
And then it hit her. Scrambling to her feet, she looked down to see the trail of a white dress of sorts at her feet. Gone was the ballerina outfit. She…she was fully evolved? Into a Gardevoir? When did this happen…? And then she saw him.
James, walking up the hill, to where she stood, dressed in his normal, borderline hipster outfit. She let a soft smile fill her face. Well, at least she wasn’t lost. Master! She started to walk downhill, glad to see a friendly face Where are w-
She was interrupted by him taking her in a embrace. M..master…James?! His arm wrapped around her back, he brought her closer, closer to his face, his eyes closing as their lips…
*BRRRIIIIIIIIIING*
Blinking her eyes, Sona awoke, staring at her alarm clock with a combination of anger and disappointment. Damn… It had been that dream again. It had been four years since that forced embrace, and she still couldn’t get it out of her head. Getting up, stretching, and yawning, she…felt something. It was like a faint heartbeat in her soul…a familiar one. She looked down…and screamed.
Moments later, James barged into her room, groggy and rubbing his eyes. Sona stared at him, like a dear caught in headlights…then laughed. “Mrggh..what’re you screaming about…and what’s so funny…scared me half to dea..*yawn*” S…sorry, master. I couldn’t help it, your pajamas… “mmyyes…they’re hil-“ He stopped midsentence, his face fully scanning Sona for the second time. She could feel the heartbeat flutter as he looked her over, shock setting in from it.
It…seems I evolved in the middle of the night. I was just a bit…scared, waking up in this new form… She raised an arm experimentally. It felt the same, only…everything was so much, clearer. As if she was seeing for the first time. “Yeah, professsors said it would be any day now.Congra-*yawn*-tulations.” Looking at the rays of sun creeping through the closed blinds of the room, James stretched, yawning once more “Geh, guess we’ll have to talk about it on the fly. School’s gonna start soon. I’ll be downstairs…”
As he turned to leave, Sona extended a hand. Wait! Master…can…can you feel something? Like…another heartbeat…inside of you? It sounds odd, but… James paused for a second, then shrugged “Yeah, professors already told me about it. Weren’t you listening?” Well excuse me if I’m easily distracted! Yawning, james took a second to fully wake up before responding “Mgh. Well, way it was explained to me, most psychic types and their owners tend to form bonds. And as the bond grows…” He thought about what he was going to say next, hard. Th_ m_re th_y sh__e. W..what? Sona said, caught off guard by the fact that she was responded to not with words, but with telepathy. Fuzzy, and hard to make out, but telepathy none the less.
“The more they share. Well, seeing as how you caught part of that…” He chuckled “…we might be able to cheat both ways on tests soon.” Master, are you honestly insinuating that I, the great and all-knowing Sona, would cheat on a test? “Yes.” With that, he held up a hand and walked out of the room, leaving the half-fuming, half-giggling Gardevoir to her devices. Things like that are what make me li…No. She mentally decided. Not like. Today would be the day. She wasn’t going to pussyfoot around the subject anymore. He’d figure it out soon enough with the bond, and…well, she thought he felt the same. Stumbling out of bed, she made her way downstairs, walking through the plush halls of the mansion, looking forward to the day with nervous excitement.
…
The two walked down the familiar road to Dawn High, trodding along on their way to school. So, got any plans for today?~ Sona said, floating a bit closer then she normally did. She wasn’t worried about getting too close anymore. “Eh?” His face tinging to Sona’s proximity, he shook his head “Nah. Just the regular listen to teaches blah on, hanging out with you, being spiteful to everyone else…Same Shit,” Different Day she finished, answering a high-five that needed no requesting. It had become habit. Just like so many other things, wistfully thought. Like how he always knew what box of colored pencils to grab her. Like how he always knew what she was going to want to eat, even if she didn’t ask. Like how…
“Holy shit!” “Oh my!” “How did he?” “Amazning!”
The road leading up to Dawn High was packed that morning, a swarming crowd buzzing about something utterly amazing. Confused, Sona grabbed James’ arm and teleported her way into the middle of the crowd, scaring the bejeezus out of a few of them and coming face to face with…..John Travish and his raichu!?
The two were laughing and flexing, looking at one member of the crowd, and then another, and then another… “That’s right! We conquered the dawn gym! On our first tr-“ Suddenly, John noted James and Sona. He spat at their direction as his Pikachu growled, taunting “What do you want, badgeless loverbirds? Here to make out again? Oh, I see your Krilla evolved! Perhaps she’s here to worship me t-“ Sona cut him off with a muted gasp of shock from the crowd by, quite literally, flipping him the bird, dragging James back off as she shoved her way through the crowd “H…Hey! Sona! Easy there!” No! We are better than that motherfucker!
As she dragged him further and further away from the school, James tried to pull back “Hey, we really need to get to cl-“ She stopped and turned to him, her eyes full of rage, her emotions pounding with rage and jealously. THAT LITTLE SHIT IS NOT GOING TO UPSTAGE ME. WE CAN MAKE UP FOR IT LATER. Gulping, he followed her without complaint as she marched onwards to the gym. He hadn’t seen her this pissed since the last time John insulted him.
Wait...What? She only…got that pissed, when…? No, it was just a coincidence. John was just a douche…right?
…
Barging in through the double doors of the gym, Sona pointed dramatically. Past the various pillars adorned with sun motifs that doted the single hallway of the gym, past the shining floors which reflected the roof, reliefs of the rising sun transparently showing on the waxed surface, and past the circle within the middle of the gym which marked the battle area, directly at a man sitting upon a gold-colored…throne, of sorts.
The man stood up, the aged lines of his face showing gentle surprise as his crossed arms, hidden within the folds of his solar-marked robes, a showing of devoutness to the sun god, Solrock. “Hello there, little miss. Don’t you two have school?” Translate. For. Me. Sona made a growling noise, James repeating every word she said “Well, sir she…I mean, that is we, are challenging you for you badge, because of a certain…someone…” He neglected to use Sona’s profane translations, not that she minded. She was blinded with rage. “…shoved it on our faces, an-“
The man raised a hand, coughing before giving a warm smile “Please. You two and John are one of the gossip items of the town. A rivalry spreading back to when you were all lads and lasses…my how you all grow up.” Shaking his head and reaching the folds of his robes, he pulled out a single pokeball “So, how does a little single elimination sound? One on one, since as everyone…” He took a moment to pause, coughing into his sleeve “…knows, Sona is your only pokemon.”
James nodded, Sona making her way into the arena. Both trainers tapped their licenses, activating the limiters within. Afterall, no sense in letting their pokemon kill one-another, no? Standing up and coughing once more, the man lifts up his pokeball “Then I, Galan Sol, gym leader of Dawn Town, humbully accept your challenge, James Bates. Even though Sona is doing the actual challenging.”
With a wry smile, he tosses his pokeball, revealing the blazing pokemon inside. Shooting a gout of flame from his mouth, a Blazeikin leaps out, adapting a fighting stance towards Sona. Her eye twitching, Sona took a single step….
A single teleport-enhanced step that took her from where she stood, to right infront of the Blazeikin. Grabbing the surprised Blazeikin’s face, she slammed it down into the ground, focusing pure, brute mental force directly down her arm. Lifting back up the dazed Blazekin’s head, she smashed it once more into the oh-so-shiny floor, using her telekinesis to augment her strength, picking him up by the head and brutally throwing him into a pillar.
Meanwhile, James was busy blushing and mouthing off a reply to Galan, when he observed Sona brutally beat down Blazeikin. It took a second for James and Galan to realize what had just happened. Sure, there was the obvious type advantage, but…That was just brutal. She was… destructive poetry in motion, James thought, with a blush, before wiping his face off. No, no, can’t think that way, calm your heart, she’ll think you’re weird…
Standing back up over her unconscious foe, Sona exhaled a breath of elation. Nothing to it, Master! See!? We’re totally better than…She snatched the badge from Galan before the old man could give his victory speech, spinning around and dash-teleporting to James, whom she proceeded to glomp. Much better then some stupid moron and his raichu! Now come! Come! Dragged out by the arm, James just barely managed to get a goodbye wave to Galan as his Gardevoir forcibally dragged him out.
“Honestly Orah.” Galan said after the young trainer and his pokemon left, sighing and shaking his head “When I said ‘go easy’, I didn’t mean ‘give up after one hit.” Moving back to his feet, the Blazeikin rubbed his head I didn’t particularly feel like another mental assault. Plus, well, she’s a beginner, so she was just flooding her immediate thoughts at me. “Mmm? What about them?” Stretching, Orah replied back with a ponderous tilt of the head Roughly, she really, really wanted to impress him. I figured I could do something nice for the youngster and let her have her moment of glory. “Hah. You’ve always been a softie.” And you? Asking me to go easy on them was your idea.”Pah.”
…
There were clouds doting the sky, the overcast forewarning of a storm. This is was not the best place. It was not the best time. The two stood under that tree, idly, watching the clouds float by. James looked over at Sona, her eyes closed, her heart fluttering. Something’s up… He thought. She didn’t just get flustered like that. Not by watching the clouds. “What’s up, So-“
At that point, the flood gates burst. She couldn’t hold back any longer. To hell with the fact that it wasn’t perfect. She held up the badge, the six-pointed star shining lightly as a glint of light reflected off of you. I earned this. For you. I beat the crap out of that Blazeikin. For you. I…I….
She lunged.
Forward.
Into his outstretching, surprised arms.
Her lips.
Meeting his.
I LOVE YOU
That was all she could say. Hugging the shocked youth as hard as she could. She didn’t give a damn what anyone else thought. She didn’t give a damn that…anything! Iloveyouiloveyouiloveyou iwilldoanythingforyouandiloveyouand…. She finally let him go, looking into his beet, shocked face. I..if you don’t feel that way, that’s fine, but…Just let me stay with you either way! I’ll make myself useful! I’ll do anything! I’ll fight anyone! I just want to be with y-
And then what she dared hoped for to happen, did. He returned the kiss, grabbing her and holding her, as she had held him. She had hoped, she had hoped, she had hoped. And it happened. He did! He did!
And I love you.
The first message to come fully through their link from his end. The only words she ever wanted to hear. If she could just live now, as they were…that would be fine, for her. So many things more they could do, but love was here and now.
Nothing else mattered.
…
What seemed like hours later, they finally parted. Neither of them wanted to give up the embrace, but time forces all things to end. They looked in eachother’s eyes, faces ignited with the blushes that accompanied adolescent love. I...I’m so glad. I thought you would say no, or push me away, or get disgusted and…. Tears started to well in her eyes, before James took her hand and squeezed tightly “Hey. I wouldn’t do that. So don’t cry, ok?” Sniffling, she nodded. Cute, just what he lik-loved about her. There was no more need to lie.
Sure, he was caught off guard by the sudden confession. Sure, he had no idea what to think for a few seconds. But those seconds of thought were all he needed. He didn’t just like her. He loved her. Everything about her. From the way she always blathered on while doodling, to her cute little jealous fits, he wouldn’t give any part of it up for anything. Alright…
Her eyes perking back up, she grabbed his arm Right! I’ve got the day all planned out!First, we’re going to go to the park, then we’re going to go to the best dinner in town, and then I- The two are interrupted by seeing Vicktor shamble up the road, the man looking highly distracted Is that Vicktor? Blushing, the two immediately part hands. They couldn’t let other people find out…about, well, them. They didn’t have need to worry though.
A bottle of wine in hand, a unusual sight for the professor, was tossed aside as he got close, the man laughing and holding his hand to his head “Haha..Ish been lookins all overha for yous two! Heh. Heheheh.” James sighed and put his hands on Vicktor’s shoulders “Focus, Vicktor. Now I’m sorry we skipped school, but…” Vicktor just laughed drunkenly “Sorreh…Ish drunk cuz I cant takes it….Your fathersh…”
Vicktor then suddenly looked sober, far more so then he had been for the past three hours. “Your father…is dead.”
