The day continued on quietly after Kazehaya made his forced exit from the classroom. The rest of class 2-C was normal throughout the afternoon, however there was an unsettling feeling surrounding Sawako, Ayane and Chizuru. They felt uneasy and worried, feeling guilty they pushed Kazehaya away. However, it was neither of the three’s fault. Ryu had as much fault as they did, but he didn’t show even the slightest remorse for it. He was quiet, as he always was.
The final bell finally rung and the students all prepared themselves for the rest of the afternoon. Tossing her bag over her shoulder, Chi turned around and looked at the quiet Ryu prepare for his exit. He loosened his tie and collar and turned to Chi. She nodded at him and he understood what she wanted him to do; he needed to help Kazehaya out of his slump.
Sawako gathered her things as well. She thought about wishing Ryu good luck, but didn’t want to seem over enthusiastic about the situation. She opened her mouth to say something, anything, but Ayane interrupted her, asking if she’d like to join herself and Chi to a newly opened yogurt shop.
“I heard their mango yogurt was really good, Sawako,” Ayane added. “We’ll let Ryu to his business and he can meet up with us a little later.”
Sawako smiled at Ayane, but quickly turned her head down.
“Do you think,” Sawako started, pausing between her sentence and later continuing her thought. “Do you think Kazehaya will be okay?”
Ayane’s facial expression turned to worry. Noticing, Chi filled in for Ayane.
“I’m sure he’ll be okay,” Chi gently smiled, patting Sawako on her shoulder. “We all just have to get over it and he’ll be better in no time. Kazehaya just needs to think a bit more. But no matter what, we will always be there for each other.”
Sawako looked up to Chi and nodded in agreement. She then turned to Ryu, wishing him good luck. Ryu didn’t respond.
After leaving the school building, the two groups, Ryu on one and the three girls on the other, parted ways at the entrance. The girls waved to Ryu and hurried over to where the yogurt shop was. Ryu stood by the entrance as they left. He didn’t wave or say good-bye. The girls already understood he was almost always serious and expressionless.
He walked the distance towards Kazehaya’s house, passed the road of cherry blossom trees. The petals fell with the wind as Ryu steadily pressed one foot forward than the other, walking with both his and Kazehaya’s schoolbags. Crossing the bridge, he spotted Kazehaya’s mother approaching the residence. She noticed the tall boy walking towards her, and she greeted him happily.
“Hello, Sanada-kun,” she began, smiling at him. She noticed her son’s handbag slung over Ryu’s shoulder, and was happy to see he had brought it home for him. “Shouta isn’t feeling very well, I’m sorry to say.” Ryu nodded without saying a word, letting the mother know he knew of his condition.
“I just came back from some grocery shopping in hopes of preparing a nice dinner to make him feel better. It’s not like him to miss his classes. If you’d like, you should stay as well. I, and I’m sure Shouta, will be glad to have you as our guest tonight.”
Ryu nodded, but nicely declined her offer. “I’m just here to drop off his bag,” he informed.
“Oh…” Kazehaya’s mother seemed a bit disappointed, but quickly let him know that the offer is always available any day. “Well, we should be heading inside,” she concluded.
Entering the household, Ryu and Kazehaya’s mother slipped off their footwear at the entrance. She headed into the kitchen with her bags, but stopped in her tracks.
“Oh, I forgot the carrots,” she pouted. Excusing herself out the house, she let Ryu know Kazehaya was in the room before closing the door behind her and stating she’ll be back soon. Ryu headed upstairs towards Kazehaya’s room. He turned the corner and stopped at his door, only waiting a few seconds before knocking.
Ryu waited for an answer, but things remained quiet from the inside. Ryu didn’t want to beat around the bush, so he slid open Kazehaya’s door, only to be met with a pillow to the face. It softly fell to Ryu’s feet after hitting his face.
“Shouta,” he called to his friend. He was buried beneath his quilt, perhaps even more upset Ryu decided to come visit him.
“Leave me alone, Ryu,” Shouta commanded.
Ryu stepped inside his room, dropping both the schoolbags near the entrance.
“Shouta,” he began again. “You should come outside and have some yogurt with the girls and me.” He was obviously avoiding the bigger problem, not seeming to care Kazehaya was hurt over what he did and how he acts. There was a slight silence, and he cautiously approached Kazehaya’s bed.
“I think it’ll be-“ He stopped, interrupted by Kazehaya.
“No!” He shouted, declining Ryu’s attempt to make him feel better. With his face and body still buried beneath his quilt, he spoke to Ryu, angry and despaired.
“I don’t want to see you, Ryu,” Kazehaya stated. “There’s no excusing what you did to me.”
Ryu stood confused and dismantled. He didn’t understand Kazehaya; to him, he did nothing wrong.
“Shouta, you should still come. Wear a blindfold if you don’t want to look at me.” To Kazehaya, Ryu wasn’t being too serious, although it was hard to tell because of his emotionless and stern facial expression. Shouta remained quiet and a small pant can be heard approaching Ryu from behind. Turning around, Ryu was happy to see Kazehaya’s adopted dog.
“Pedro,” Ryu called out to it. He scurried his way to Ryu’s legs, begging to be picked up and held. Ryu having an odd soft spot for animals reached out and held Pedro against his face. Kazehaya became more irritated, feeling ignored.
“Ryu!” he shouted at him, releasing himself from beneath his covers. Ryu set Pedro down to the floor and it hurried away out into the hallway. He turned to face his best friend, a little stunned to see him in such a state. His eyes were puffy and red; he had been crying for a while not being able to cope with his new found emotions. Ryu raised an eyebrow at him.
“Do you think this is a joke, Ryu?!” he demanded to know what Ryu thought about him. “Do you think I’m just a stupid little kid with no feelings?” Ryu didn’t know how to respond. He stood quiet as a few droplets of tears rolled down the boy’s cheeks.
“Shouta,” Ryu began. Kazehaya used the sleeve of his shirt to wipe away at his eyes. “I don’t think any of those things. Why are you mad at me?”
Kazehaya couldn’t believe Ryu was pretending not to have done or said anything hurtful or controversial. He couldn’t see how Ryu can act so calm and poised over the whole situation. He gritted his teeth and became angrier at his friend. Finally he got up from the bed and charged at Ryu with arms stretched out. He pushed him into the wall, angrier than ever with tears continuing to escape his eyes.
“Damn you, Ryu!” He shouted at him. Ryu remained calm, understanding that Kazehaya was very upset at him, although he didn’t see why. “How can you be so stupid?!”
A slight pause placed a silence between the two as Kazehaya dug his face into Ryu’s chest. Ryu looked down at his hurt friend and placed both his hands on Kazehaya’s shoulder. With his head still pushed into Ryu’s shirt, Kazehaya sobbed a little and spoke.
“Why did you kiss me, Ryu?” Kazehaya asked, ashamed to have questioned. Ryu looked at his smaller friend, thinking that he thought he had done Kazehaya a favor.
“I wanted to help you feel better.”
“What?” Kazehaya looked up to Ryu. His expressionless face looked back at him. “Ryu, I don’t understand you. You can’t just kiss me when I’m so vulnerable!”
Ryu didn’t say anything back to Kazehaya. He didn’t know how to respond.
“I didn’t know how you felt about me, Ryu. After that night, you hardly said a word to me. I didn’t know how to feel; I already felt rejected by Sawako, but do I really deserve to be rejected by you, too?” He let go of his grip and looked back down to the floor. Ryu took a deep breath in before speaking, hoping to calm him down.
“Shouta, I just wanted to help you feel better,” he said again. He paused and gently pushed Kazehaya away. “I brought you your bag. I’m going to leave now.” He turned away from Kazehaya and headed towards the door.
“That’s a lie, Ryu,” Kazehaya said. Ryu turned back to him. Another short pause fell. “And you’re just going to leave like that? Ryu, I need to know why!”
Ryu shook his head. “It’s not a lie.” He turned back to exit, and said what he thought would’ve been his last sentence. “Oh, and we’re not mad at you, Kazehaya. They said they’re sorry for yelling.”
Ryu stood at the entrance of the room waiting for Kazehaya to respond. He finally spoke out once Ryu began to move again. He rushed towards him in an instant, reaching and grabbing his hand.
“Wait,” Kazehaya commanded. Ryu lacked what Kazehaya wanted. He wanted to understand Ryu better, but he wasn’t saying much of anything. He hated the quiet and cool Ryu, he wanted to understand his best friend but he refused to show anything other than a nonchalant mannerism. It made Kazehaya upset; he just wished he’d leave already, but a part of him held Ryu back; the part that loved his best friend.
“Ryu,” he paused, still holding onto the taller boy’s hand. Ryu turned around to face him. “How do you feel about me?”
Ryu looked at him in the eyes. They stared at each other for what seemed like forever. Ryu wanted to make Kazehaya understand him somehow, in his own way. He released Kazehaya’s grip and placed his hands on the boy’s face. In the moment, Kazehaya closed his eyes, and Ryu leaned in for another kiss.
